Game of the Week: Ghost Trick and how we haunt our games

10 months 1 week ago

Hello everybody! Christian Donlan is away for this week's Game of the Week, so I'm afraid you all get a sorry consolation prize in the shape of me waffling about poltergeists. Why poltergeists? Because of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, of course. The current gen remaster has just launched and our Henry Stockdale was tickled pink, hailing it as a "brilliant mystery" and a work of "comedic absurdity" in his review, while noting some slight awkwardness with the PlayStation and Xbox versions based on translating a touchscreen game to analog stick control.

In Ghost Trick, you're a dead guy possessing objects and rewinding time to thwart a series of assassinations. Each level begins with you chatting to a recently disembodied ghost, then time-warping back to four minutes before their death, so as to hop between objects and nudge them about to interfere with the order of events. Your feats of poltergeisting are unremarkable in themselves - pop open an umbrella, knock a cupboard door - but when you chain these tiny interruptions together, you can rewrite history. There's probably a mental health maxim in there somewhere.

Here's What I Want (And Don't Want) From Nintendo's Next Console

10 months 1 week ago

Nintendo Switch is the little Nintendo console that could, and it's going to be really hard to capture the lightning in a bottle that is Nintendo's hybrid console. I have some hopes of my own, some realistic, and some completely ridiculous. I'm going to focus on the "realistic" expectations I have, and keep the ridiculous ones to my personal Nintendo fanfic. I know what I want and what I don't want from Switch 2, or Super Switch, or Switch U, or whatever Nintendo decides to call it. The Switch is easily my most-played console, and the follow-up will almost certainly do the same, but here's what I both want and expect from Nintendo's next console. But first, a little history.

Over six years ago, everyone, even diehard apologists like me, agreed the Wii U failed to live up to expectations. Sales were abysmal. The games were great (as can clearly be seen by the fact that 95% of them were ported to Switch), but the hardware was just a bummer. The name allegedly confused people, and I know for a fact at least one person in my circle of friends bought the Wii U thinking the gamepad was portable. Nintendo took the logical leap and made the Switch what the Wii U should have been in the first place.

NBA 2K24 Has Crossplay Across PS5 and Xbox Series X and S

10 months 1 week ago

2K has unveiled NBA 2K24, due out September 8 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

In a first for the series, NBA 2K24 has crossplay across all modes for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant is the NBA 2K24 cover star, and appears on the front of the NBA 2K24 Kobe Bryant Edition and Black Mamba Edition boxes. There’s also a 25th Anniversary Edition, which includes a 12-month subscription to NBA League Pass.

NBA 2K24, developed by Visual Concepts, includes the new Mamba Moments mode. This lets you recreate some of Bryant’s most memorable performances while progressing through his career. Meanwhile, ProPLAY is described as a new tech that “directly translates" NBA footage into NBA 2K24 gameplay. This tech is only available in the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of the game. Expect to hear more about that later this summer.

“Dual-gen" access is included for the Black Mamba Edition and 25th Anniversary Edition for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and S and Xbox One platforms, and provides a version of the game on each console generation within the same console family.

Can The Witcher Survive Henry Cavill’s Departure?

10 months 1 week ago

The first episode of The Witcher season 3 begins with a lengthy recap of the previous two seasons: flashes of Henry Cavill in that initial, questionable Geralt wig, Freya Allen as a much-younger, more eyebrow-less Ciri, everyone’s shittier eye contacts, sword fights, magic, and a bit of sex. While watching, I was…

Mars First Logistics is even more delightful than it looks

10 months 1 week ago

At last, a game to unite Graham, Ollie, and me in a triumvirate of absolute dorks. Mars First Logistics is a game about designing little moon rover buggies to pick things up and drive them to somewhere else.

If you looked at it and went "ooh", your coo lobe was right. "Design a vehicle" games are often too fiddly and/or competition-oriented for me, and trucking games too businesslike and grounded. This threads the needle beautifully. It's challenging, but gently, prioritising an approachable design and smooth controls without sacrificing the satisfaction of solving a decent engineering puzzle. It's even pretty, so that even plain driving back and forth is pleasant and rewarding.

New Pikmin 4 Trailer Focuses on the Pikmin

New Pikmin 4 Trailer Focuses on the Pikmin

Nintendo shared a new Pikmin 4 video that acts as an introduction to the sorts of Pikmin you’ll see in the game. Both in-game footage and animations created specifically for the video appear to introduce how they work ahead of the game’s July 223 debut.

Things begin by introducing the plant-like creatures. Then, it shows how using the “whistle” in game can summon them and get them to follow you. As usual, you can toss Pikmin to direct them to perform tasks in Pikmin 4. So you can toss them at items to carry them, at mounds to dig them up, at unfinished structures like bridges to complete them, and at enemies to fight them. However, in situations with enemies, they could be eaten or injured. It shows that whistling can get them to return to you and out of harm’s way. Also, it shows how you can grow and collect more.

Primarily, the Blue, Red, and Yellow Pikmin are the focus in this Pikmin 4 video. However, at the three minute mark it shows off the other ones that appear, while also highlighting each one’s speciality. Blue can swim underwater, Red are okay with fire, Yellow are fine with electricity, and so on. There’s also an introduction to Oatchi at the four minute mark that shows how the “dog” can work alongside them for getting items and moving around.

Here’s the “Your First Expedition with Pikmin” trailer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HERRRVpEX3o&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

Pikmin 4 will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023. Pre-orders are open.

Sega Withholding Its Largest Franchises From Blockchain Integration

10 months 1 week ago

Sega Blockchain Sonic

In a statement to Bloomberg News, Sega Co-Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi said that the company will not open its largest franchises to integration with third-party blockchain projects to "avoid devaluing its content." Sega previously began selling NFT content back in 2001, but later expressed caution due to the large negative reaction to the technology. [Thanks, Bloomberg!]

“We’re looking into whether this technology is really going to take off in this industry, after all” Utsumi told Bloomberg's Takashi Mochizuki, “The action in play-to-earn games is boring, what’s the point if games are no fun?" Utsumi was described as "non-committal" on whether blockchain technology will be involved with the Sega "Super Game" project, which could possibly be out in 2026.

Bloomburg cited the failure of blockchain-based Play-to-Earn games such as Axie Infinity and the recent collapse of several cryptocurrency marketplaces as being possibly behind the "cooling" of the blockchain technology's appeal.

Pokemon Company Will Release Tatsugiri Plushes

10 months 1 week ago

Pokemon Tatsugiri plushes

The Pokemon Company will release six plushes from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet from July 15, 2023. Prices for them will start from 2,200 JPY ($15.30). The Pokemon that you’ll be able to buy plushes for are Floragato, Crocalor, Quaxwell, as well as the three different forms of Tatsugiri. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

[gallery columns="6" ids="971844,971845,971846,971847,971848,971849" link="file"]

The plushes of the three starter Pokemon cost 2,970 JPY ($20.60). Floragato, Crocalor, and Quaxwell are the second evolutions of Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, respectively. Since they’re the first Pokemon that players choose at the start of their Paldean adventure, they’re likely Pokemon that they’re more than familiar with.

The three Tatsugiri forms are Curly, Droopy, and Stretchy Forms. Tatsugiri doesn’t evolve into anything, and we don’t have to do any special to find the three versions of them. We simply have to go to Casseroya Lake and look around. James Turner revealed earlier this year that he was the one who designed Tatsugiri for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. He’s an artist at Game Freak who designed Pokemon in the past, as well as Tembo the Badass Elephant.

1/3 Masterline NieR Automata 2B Figure Costs Almost $2,000

10 months 1 week ago

nier automata masterline 2b figure header

A 1/3 Masterline figure of 2B from NieR Automata is available to pre-order from the Square Enix store. There is a standard version and a DX one, and they’re both only on the Japanese version of the store. The normal version costs 253,000 JPY ($1755.65) and the DX version costs 275,000 JPY ($1908.30).

The 2B figure is around 95 centimeters tall (including the base) and weighs around 21 kilograms. Even if you can manage to find a proxy service to send it over from Japan, the shipping fee would be quite high. The base is a machine lifeform and the Heavy Armor is behind her as well. Pod 042 is floating alongside her. If you get the DX version, you can remove her skirt and visor.

Here is a trailer for the Masterline 2B figure:

Though the North America Square Enix store doesn’t have this particular 1/3 Masterline 2B figure, it does sell the 1/4 scale figure of 2B in her 2P color. She has a flipped color palette than usual, so she has black hair and a white dress. She is also standing on a machine lifeform while Pod 042 floats beside her.

Lady Dimitrescu actor Maggie Robertson is in Baldur's Gate 3

10 months 1 week ago

Maggie Robertson, the actor who played the iconic Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village, is set to play another memorable villain, this time in Baldur's Gate 3.

Larian confirmed this to me at an event I went to this week, where I played the launch version of the game.

Orin the Red, as the character is known, is a magical, shape-shifting menace. A sexy but sadistic presence who will appear time and time again through the game - towards the latter parts of it - to test your resolve.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Lets You Have Sex With a Druid in Bear Form

10 months 1 week ago

Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian has teased some… unusual romance options in the upcoming fantasy role-playing game.

Spoilers for Baldur’s Gate 3 ahead.

One character Baldur’s Gate 3 fans have had their eye on throughout the game’s early access period is the Druid Halsin. Halsin is an NPC and potential companion who can be rescued from a prison. But play your cards right, and Halsin can be so much more.

Literally. As a Druid, Halsin can temporarily 'wildshape' into a bear, and he does this during a romance cutscene. Larian showed off the furry encounter during a Panel From Hell livestream. You can see it in the tweet video below:

It proved too saucy for TikTok, which pulled the livestream offline an hour before it ended. "TikTok canceled our stream because it was too artistic and they don’t understand," tweeted Larian Director of Publishing Michael Douse.

Preview: Sword Art Online Last Recollection Overstuffs Its Action-Packed Gameplay

Sword Art Online Last Recollection Preview PS5

During my adventures at Anime Expo 2023, I had the opportunity to check out a Sword Art Online Last Recollection. Ever since Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment back in the day, I checked out (or even reviewed) all of these games. Last Recollection finds itself in an interesting place, blending together elements of past games and newer ones alike.

For around 15 minutes, I had the opportunity to run through an area of Sword Art Online Last Recollection in a preview build and explore what it had going on. There wasn’t much in this mostly linear part of the map based around the War of Underworld Arc--I'm still uncertain if this game is open-world, even after asking an attendant--besides a few enemies and a place to buy goods.

Exoprimal's Crossplay Has One Giant Caveat at Launch

10 months 1 week ago

Since Capcom announced Exoprimal in 2022, players have looked forward to the dinosaur action game's focus on online multiplayer, which was later announced to support crossplay. However, Exoprimal only supports cross-platform matchmaking and not cross-platform party creation, meaning players won't be able to invite their friends to parties if they're playing on different platforms.

Today, Capcom clarified the restrictions around crossplay that will come with the game at launch in a Twitter thread.

According to the team's thread, crossplay for party creation will be limited within three platform ecosystems, which the tweet lists as:

  • Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows
  • PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
  • Steam

Exoprimal's beta had the same limitations, and it looks like they'll be sticking around for the full release's foreseeable future. The thread does hint at the live service game eventually allowing cross-platform parties, although Capcom stated it "may take some time." Capcom also noted that it will soon share a roadmap for its first large post-launch update soon.

Starfield's Lack of Accessibility Information Has Disabled Gamers Worried

10 months 1 week ago

Kolo Jones is eagerly awaiting the release of Starfield, Bethesda’s newest open world title. As a fan of the sci-fi genre, Jones wants to explore as many planets as possible, engage in ship combat, and unravel the mysteries between each faction. But currently, her anticipation is met with equal feelings of trepidation. For Jones and other disabled players, Starfield’s lack of accessibility information is causing concerns.

Last year, Bethesda unveiled an official gameplay look at Starfield, and during this year’s Summer Game Fest, Xbox hosted an hour-long Starfield Direct with new footage and developer commentary. While we learned about mechanics like combat, space traversal, and even sandwich storage, noticeably missing from each presentation was any word on accessibility features or design practices. And in both instances, the accessibility community took notice. Speaking with IGN, disabled players question the overall silence regarding Starfield’s accessibility information, the accessibility of previous Bethesda Game Studios titles, and their hopes for Starfield pre-and post-release.

Starfield’s Silence

As a disabled content creator and consultant, Jones understands the importance of giving disabled players as much information as possible before a title launches. For a game as expansive as Starfield, disabled individuals like Jones need to know of available options and designs that will either help or hinder their gameplay. While it’s exciting to see new footage, Jones notes there is a layer of uncertainty behind each demonstration.

11 Longest Running Video Game Franchises of All Time

10 months 1 week ago

Few companies have been able to sustain franchises through gaming's unpredictable market shifts over the last five decades. As the medium moved from arcades to living rooms and tastes transitioned with technologies, only a fraction of a percentage of franchises from gaming’s nascent days has survived.

Below we’ve compiled the franchises that have stood the test of time longer than any others. These are the 11 longest-running* video game franchises of all time.

*To be considered for this list, a franchise must have content currently in development or content released within the last five years. This list captures only franchises that originated as games; long-running licensed franchises such as Spider-Man, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars are therefore excluded.

11. Microsoft Flight Simulator – 41 years

First release: Microsoft Flight Simulator (1982)

Latest release: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 (2024)

20 years before Microsoft began its Xbox business, the company entered the gaming market as a software developer for early home computers. Among its first batch of games was Microsoft Flight Simulator, the first in its still-running series of aviation simulations.

After a dozen-plus releases, Flight Sim regained mainstream popularity in 2020 with Microsoft Flight Simulator, the series’ first game to be released on console. IGN’s reviewer Seth Macy awarded it a review score of 10 and called it “the most awe-inspiring simulation [he’s] ever experienced.”

Tears of the Kingdom Builder Behind the Infinite Helicopter Reveals Her Secrets

10 months 1 week ago

Tears of the Kingdom has been out for over a month now, and the community’s zest for building bizarre vehicles hasn’t slowed down. A quick peek into the r/HyruleEngineering subreddit just today reveals a whole host of planes, trains, and automobiles with various quirks ranging from using very few pieces of Zonai tech to having masses of lasers to decimate any enemies that wander by. And players just keep getting even more creative as more tricks are discovered.

But for some, building anything this complex can seem daunting. As a player that only built when necessary to finish the game, the level of creativity needed to make, I don’t know, a “death Beyblade” seems completely out of reach. Fortunately, one of Tears of the Kingdom’s expert engineers is here to dispel my fears.

I ‘Played’ Pokémon Sleep and Now I Just Want to Go Back to Bed

10 months 1 week ago

Having been at IGN for almost 10 years now, I’ve attended my fair share of unusual press events for upcoming games, movies, comics, and TV shows. I’ve floated in the air inside a Batman-themed skydiving wind tunnel at San Diego Comic-Con. I’ve watched a group of Diablo cosplayers perform a ritual to summon Zedd to DJ the D4 launch party. And I’ve been taught by Captain America’s stunt double how to fight Iron Man. But the invitation I received from The Pokémon Company International this week may be the most unusual of all.

Back in 2019, a curious new game called Pokémon Sleep was announced. It immediately raised numerous questions. Is this a Pokémon game you play in your sleep? How does one play a Pokémon game in their sleep? Do Porygon dream of Mareep? But years passed without another word about the game, leaving the gaming community to wonder if Pokémon Sleep was something we collectively dreamed up — and leaving those questions unanswered. Except for the last one. The answer is no, they dream of Mega Ampharos. (Who doesn’t?)

Now, four years later, Pokémon Sleep has emerged from its prolonged slumber, and I was invited to a media event where we’d get a hands-on demo of the game and spend the night at a hotel to try it out, all expenses paid. I didn’t quite understand at first. “Do I actually have to spend the night to try out the game?” I asked in an email. “Yes,” the publicist replied. Upon reflection, it was a stupid question. The game is called Pokémon Sleep, after all.
