Hohokum's spiritual successor takes flight in Flock

I grew up in the countryside. My home was surrounded by fields of sheep, cows and mud (so much mud). I would often spend my days running over to the various farms nearby to greet the animals behind the fences, feeding them with grass and leaves from my hands. I would get myself in a bit of a mess doing this, coming home with my once-bright outfits and shoes a very different colour than they had been at the start of the day. My mother was probably incredibly frustrated at my constant desire to launch myself into the farmers' fields, just so I could acquaint myself with their livestock, but I kept on doing it. I was fascinated by the gathering of cows and sheep that met me at the fence.

And the animals seemed equally curious about me. Or, perhaps they were just eager for the greenery I would tantalisingly wave around in a bid to get their attention. But, whatever it was, I would soon amass quite an assortment of faces as I leaned in to tend to my own little flock, before I was called home again for dinner. I may not have realised it then, but it was a truly special time.

I thought of this recently, when watching a trailer for Flock, the upcoming game from Richard Hogg and Hollow Ponds, the pairing behind I Am Dead. In Flock, players are tasked with acquiring a flock of their own. But this is not your typical shepherding experience. Rather, it is a gloriously colourful sky-bound delight, featuring flying sheep and a collection of eclectic wildlife.

Lynx Landau Will Be Playable in Honkai: Star Rail 1.3

honkai star rail lynx

HoYoVerse released the splash art for Lynx Landau, who will be the four-star character in Version 1.3 of Honkai: Star Rail. It usually teases characters a version in advance. So with the addition of Lynx, we now know that the new banner characters in Version 1.3 will be Imbibitor Lunae, Fu Xuan, and Lynx.

Lynx is the youngest daughter of the Landau family and is an environment explorer. The reason why she wasn’t in Belobog is likely because she was roughing it out in the wilderness. Unlike Gepard and Serval, she lacks motivation, is introverted, and avoids unnecessary socialization. In her opinion though, all socialization is unnecessary. As a playable character, Lynx will be a Quantum Abundance unit.

In English, Risa Mei voices her and in Japanese, Haruka Terui voices her. Risa previously voiced Kokomi in Genshin Impact and Benihime in Loop8: Summer of Gods. Terui’s previous roles include Yuna Yuki in Yuki Yuna is a Hero and Shania in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

This cute new roguelike mixes Pokémon's creature-collecting with Slay The Spire's moreish structure

Good Pokémon-a-likes continue to pop up on PC, and I just found another really cute one hiding in the tall grass of Steam demos. Kādomon: Hyper Auto Battlers naturally has you collecting colourful creatures before you force them into an animal fight pit against other probably-not-enthusiastic participants. But this one mixes in some of Slay The Spire’s roguelike structure and the result has you compulsively resisting the "just one more game" urge.

The RPS Game Club pick for July is Unpacking!

Now that we've all escaped the clutches of The Tartarus Key, it's time for another RPS Game Club pick! This month's game has been chosen by yours truly and I'm very much in the mood to revisit a comfy, cosy puzzle game so I've chosen Unpacking. Cue the confetti!

Unpacking is a puzzle game that's all about pulling your homewares and personal items out of cardboard moving boxes and placing them in a new home. It's best described as a relaxing house moving sim but it's also a sort of block-fitting puzzle game. Finding the perfect spot for each item is largely down to your own personal taste, but there are some loose 'room rules' (no, you cannot put your toaster in the bedroom for some midnight cheese toastie action). If you like organising games - A Little To The Left, Sticky Business, Wilmot's Warehouse and the like - then Unpacking is the game for you.

Best Amazon Prime Day 2023 PC gaming deals - Day 2

Amazon Prime Day 2023 has arrived, as it was always going to, and I’ve been tasked with assembling all the best Prime Day PC gaming deals, as I was always go to be. Whereas our Anti-Prime Day deals guide rounds up select cash-saving opportunities from non-Amazon retailers, this one is occupied by PC hardware sales as the Prime Day architects intended – perhaps even better, as nowadays there are deep discounts on actually good SSDs, keyboards, gaming monitors and so on. Not just a load of half-price cable ties and surplus mouse mats, like those first few Prime Days were all about.

Rashid Joins Street Fighter 6 in July as DLC

Capcom revealed the release date for the Street Fighter 6 Rashid DLC. It will debut later this month on July 24, 2023. He will be available in the Year 1 Character Pass or on his own. A Rental Fighter ticket can also be earned in-game and used to try him out for an hour.

Getting Rashid means that he is available both as a playable character and in the story mode as a Master. So if your avatar gets to know him, you get his attacks and can form a bond with him. Some of his confirmed attacks this time around are Arabian Cyclone, Arabian Skyhigh, Rolling Assault, Super Rashid Kick, and Wing Stroke. Capcom also noted his Level 2 Super Art is Ysaar and Level 3 Super Art is Altair.

Here's the first trailer showing Rashid gameplay.

NieR Automata Black Box Light Will Light Up Any Room

nier automata black box light header

An interior light that looks like the black box from NieR Automata Ver1.1a is available to pre-order from Amazon Japan. It’s about 75 x 75 x 75 millimeters in size, and it costs 4,180 JPY ($28.95). The light will ship out on October 31, 2023. [Thanks, Hobby Dengeki!]

Hitting the NieR Automata light against another black box light will not cause an explosion of any kind. It likely will not cause any damage either. It’s made using acrylic and ABS resin, as well as glass fibers. The light inside is LED and it will come with a battery so you will be able to use it immediately. Since it’s an LED light, you should be able to use it for quite some time without having to change it out.

Here are some more pictures of the black box light from NieR Automata Ver1.1a:

[gallery ids="971578,971579,971580" link="file"]

Ensky is the company that made the black box light, and it has a history of making anime or video game merchandise that double as household goods. For example, in 2022, it released a teapot that looks like a Psyduck, as well as a plush wrist rest that looks like a Yamper.

Can Final Fantasy 16's real-time graphics compare to FF13's CGI cinematics?

Final Fantasy games are well-known for their elaborate CGI movies - pre-rendered sequences which have traditionally highlighted key in-game moments where real-time rendering might prove insufficient. Final Fantasy 16 uses the technique rarely though, with a mix of real-time and pre-rendered in-engine footage largely used instead. With that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to investigate how FF16's in-game or in-engine sequences compare to the last mainline Final Fantasy title to use CGI, 2010's FF13. Just how close is FF16 and can its visual qualities and techniques exceed the CGI movies of its predecessor?

Despite being famous for it, the Final Fantasy series has used less and less CGI over the past decade or so. Final Fantasy 13 featured almost an hour of beautiful CGI footage, but Final Fantasy 14, 15, and FF7 Remake have only used CGI for a few key sequences per game, like opening movies. Final Fantasy 16 appears to feature no fully offline CGI sequences, with just a limited use of pre-rendered video on occasion that's entirely or almost entirely in-engine. So if significant use of CGI is a thing of the past for Final Fantasy, can FF16 replicate the same glory within the strict budgets of real-time rendering?

The characters in Final Fantasy 13 were lavishly rendered in CGI form. Excellent materials were paired with very detailed models, highlighted of course by the signature expressiveness of their Final Fantasy hair. If you do look very closely you can make out occasional flaws - like a broken shadow or the slight hint of a polygonal edge in tight close-ups, but the work holds up well.

It is a shorter trial than previous PlayStation Plus offerings, with the likes of God of War Ragnarök giving players three hours of gameplay, but still a nice addition to the service.

Final Fantasy 16 Patch Addresses Motion Blur Complaints

Square Enix has listened to player complaints and included an option to turn off motion blur in Final Fantasy 16's first post-launch patch.

Outlined on the Square Enix website, update 1.03 adds a Motion Blur Strength slider in the main menu, allowing players to increase or decrease the intensity of motion blur or turn it off altogether.

This comes after several players found the visual effect — used for myriad reasons like giving a sense of speed, covering up a low framerate, or making in-game action seem smoother — to be nauseating.

"Motion Blur Strength allows the player to adjust the strength of the motion blur effect when the character or camera is in motion," the patch notes read. "The default setting is the maximum of five. This can be lowered to reduce the strength of the motion blur effect, or set to zero to turn it off completely."

A handful of other changes are coming in the patch, which is already available on PlayStation 5, including an increased range of camera sensitivity options, new controller layouts, and some bug fixes.

AEW: Fight Forever Is Getting Stadium Stampede

AEW: Fight Forever Stadium Stampede

Despite having pretty enjoyable gameplay, AEW: Fight Forever is woefully light on features and modes. That gets remedied a bit with the announcement that Stadium Stampede is hitting the game in an upcoming free update.

Stadium Stampede sees up to 30 wrestlers compete in a free-for-all inside a giant empty stadium. Like the real-life version, insanity is the name of the game, as players can assault each other using whatever is around them, whether it's chairs, tee shirt guns, Molotovs, golf carts, or even ride atop a horse. The last competitor standing wins, and the reveal trailer sells how much of a goofy mess it’s going to be (in a good way, hopefully).

Unfortunately, there's no release date for this update other than that it's coming soon. AEW: Fight Forever has other DLC heading its way in the form of downloadable wrestler packs. FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) were added last month, and a pack containing Keith Lee and The Bunny becomes available on July 25. The final announced pack arrives on August 22 and adds Hook and Danhausen. Each of these packs also includes two new minigames. Each pack costs $11.99 and is included with the season pass.

6 My Hero Academia Shirts Come to Uniqlo

Back in June 2023, Uniqlo announced it would sell My Hero Academia shirts. Now all six options are available outside Japan. They are adult unisex style ones, ranging from sizes XXS to XXXL. They can be found online and in stores.

The designs cover multiple characters from the series. One features Deku alone on the back. Another features villains like Tomura Shigaraki, Dabi, Himeko, Mr. Compress, Spinner, and Twice on the back of the shirt as well. There’s a design that has Himeko and Ochaco. Bakugo gets his own shirt with a design on the front. Another has Deku, Ochaco, Shoto, and Bakugo. Finally, there’s a shirt that’s sort of a spoiler with Shoto and Dabi.

Here’s a closer look at every design on Uniqlo models. In the case of some, like the villains shirt, there is only an image on the back and nothing on the front.

Sengoku Basara Onimusha Capcom

A summary of a shareholder Q & A session released by Capcom included a comment on the future of fan-favorite series such as Sengoku Basara and Onimusha. The last mainline installments these series received were in 2014 and 2006, respectively.

The full quote is below:

Q: What are your future plans for expanding the Monster Hunter, Toraware no Paruma, Sengoku Basara and Onimusha series?

A: We are carrying out discussions regarding the future expansion of these titles so they can be enjoyed by a wide audience

The last mainline installment of the Sengoku Basara series was Sengoku Basara 4 in 2014, followed by the Sumeragi expansion a year later and a spin-off focusing on Sanada Yukimura in 2016. New Honkai Impact 3rd Seele Battlesuit Is Herrscher of Rebirth

New Honkai Impact 3rd Seele Battlesuit Is Herrscher of Rebirth

When the 3.8 update arrives for Honkai Impact 3rd, a Seele battlesuit called Herrscher of Rebirth will be among the additions. HoYoVerse shared a preview of new character. It goes over both decisions regarding her design, as well as some concepts for her attacks.

It begins by mentioning how Seele is an “innocent” character who wanted to “protect her friends.” However, she didn’t have the power. Due to breaking the Sea of Quanta’s barrier, she gained new strength. That’s when Seele gained the Herrscher of Rebirth power in Honkai Impact 3rd. The idea is that the team wanted to show how she’s independent and strong, She wields a scythe here, like when the Herrscher of Death or in Honkai: Star Rail. The team also decided to go with the concept where since she can create or make things wither, her innate nature would make her choose creation. As such, the moveset also involves “the character and summoned entities fighting together.”

Here's the preview for the new Seele battlesuit. If you turn on closed captions, there's an Engish translation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_K8hXm0cJI&ab_channel=HonkaiImpact3rd

Herrsher versions of characters aren't uncommon in Honkai Impact 3rd. For example, in February 2023 the Herrscher of Finality and Herrscher of Origin battlesuits for Kiana and Mei appeared.

The viral Dark Souls Pro Skater mod lets you trick around Firelink Shrine

What comes to mind when you hear Dark Souls Pro Skater? What the flip, probably (because, you know, skateboarders flip. No?). A mod that lets you slay hollowed enemies as Tony Hawk is a good guess, but Dark Souls Pro Skater is almost the reverse. A clip went viral over the weekend showing praise-the-sun-guy Solaire shredding around the game’s opening Firelink Shrine. And yes, it looks as cool as it sounds.

You can watch the clip on Twitter, but if that cursed site’s not working, you can find it on YouTube. There’s also a version that has Shrek shredding but badly, for some reason. Firelink’s ancient, mysterious ruins are transformed into a fun skatepark. Who cares where the skaters came from? Just grind, Gwyndammnit.

Vampire Survivors has ruined every ARPG for me, including Diablo 4

NBA 2K24 Cover Athlete Revealed as Kobe Bryant

The late basketball legend Kobe Bryant will be the cover star of NBA 2K24's special editions.

Revealed in a tweet from NBA 2K (below), the Kobe Bryant Edition and Black Mamba Edition will be the two more expensive versions of this year's game but their exact contents have not yet been revealed.

2K has also yet to reveal the standard edition cover star but, as per tradition, this will most likely be a current NBA player.

Bryant's appearance on the cover of NBA 2K24 most likely came as a result of his number 24 jersey, which he wore for most of his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. NBA 2K pulled a similar move last year, putting Michael Jordan on the cover of 2K23 in accordance with his number 23 jersey.

Nothing else has been revealed about NBA 2K24 so far, though the tweet notes that preorders open tomorrow and new information will likely come alongside that.

In our 6/10 review of last year's game, IGN said: "NBA 2K23's on-court improvements should've led it to an easy layup, but the ever-present nuisance of pay-to-win microtransactions make it much harder to enjoy."

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 5 Arrives Next Week

Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s fifth wave of Booster Course Pass content will land on July 12, bringing with it eight new and returning tracks and the addition of three classic characters to the game.

The new content will be available to players who have purchased the $24.99 Booster Course Pass, granting access to a massively expanded set of courses and characters released in waves 1 through 5, which have been releasing periodically throughout 2023, starting in March. The content is also available free of extra charge to players who have a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

Returning courses Athens Dash (Mario Kart Tour), Daisy Cruiser (Mario Kart Double Dash), and Moonview Highway (Mario Kart Wii) are included in Wave 5’s Feather Cup championship, as is the entirely new bathroom inspired-track Squeaky Clean Sprint.

The final four courses making up the new Cherry Cup are Los Angeles Laps (Mario Kart Tour), Sunset Wilds (Mario Kart Super Circuit), Koopa Cape (Mario Kart Wii), and Vancouver Velocity (Mario Kart Tour).

Wave 5 will also see the return of Petey Piranha, Wiggler, and Kamek as playable characters, who will take their place racing alongside other classic characters - including Birdo - who were introduced over the preceding four waves.

The courses and characters to be included in the upcoming sixth and final wave of Booster Course Pass DLC have yet to be revealed, but are expected to drop sometime later in 2023.

The Pokémon Company Explains How the Heck Pokémon Sleep Actually Works

The Pokémon Company has finally explained how its upcoming sleep tracking game Pokémon Sleep will actually work.

Outlined in a gameplay video below, the long-awaited smartphone app will let players add Pokémon to their Sleep Style Dex by, well, sleeping. Players must place their smartphones or Pokémon GO Plus+ next to their pillow overnight and the app will track the quality and style of their sleep.

Snorlax will be players' main companion in the app, but sleeping in different styles — dozing, snoozing, or slumbering — will bring in additional Pokémon who sleep in the same way. Pokémon also have several different styles of sleep and therefore have multiple forms to add to the Sleep Style Dex.

Having a better quality sleep, like by sleeping for longer, will get players points that increase Snorlax's Drowsy Power, letting it draw in more Pokémon. Sleeping for eight and a half hours will give Snorlax 100 points, for example, while sleeping for only four hours will get Snorlax around 50.

The game will also seemingly reward players with different Pokémon depending on their type of sleep. Shifting around a lot was shown alongside a Togepi in a Rocking Sleep, for example, and speaking during sleep was shown alongside a Jigglypuff in Singing Sleep.

Players will be given a new site and Snorlax every Monday, with these changes also attracting different Pokémon.

The game was announced way back in May 2019 but still lacks a launch date, though finally awoke from its slumber in February this year with new details and a summer release window.

How Diablo 4’s Story Breaks Free From Its Past

The Diablo series has made a return through the release of Diablo 4. An entirely new entry in the series, it takes place some 50 years after the end of Diablo 3, and introduces a new cast of characters, and a new antagonist. Story and Narrative Producer Melissa Corning, Senior Quest Designer Grzegorz Sadzinski, Associate Game Producer Kelly Yeo, and Art Director John Mueller took the opportunity to sit down with IGN and share information about the narrative, art direction, and how the team conceptualized this entry’s antagonist—Lilith.

Art Director John Mueller shared what the key visual inspirations were for Diablo 4’s overall art direction, and that it traces back to a trip to the Louvre when he was young. Theodore Jericho’s The Raft of the Medusa was the painting in question, stating that it helped create Diablo 4’s more classical approach in how it portrays Lilith in Inarius, while Yeo shared that these inspirations served as a broader message of humanity’s struggle against odds they can’t control, a proverbial eternal conflict brought to life in the Diablo universe.

The Callisto Protocol Gets Hour-Long PlayStation Plus Game Trial

The Callisto Protocol is the latest game to join the PlayStation Plus trials program, granting subscribers unfettered access to Striking Point Studios' horror game for an hour before buying.

It will be available, as usual, to subscribers of the most expensive $17.99 a month PlayStation Plus Premium tier, which grants trial access to a growing list of games including God of War: Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part I, and more.

The Callisto Protocol’s 60 minute trial is relatively diminutive compared to the duration of other titles included in the program, but should still grant a prospective buyer valuable insight into the game.

Following its somewhat rocky launch the action horror title has received a number of updates, bringing new aesthetic content, death animations, a permadeath mode, and a wave-based riot mode to the game.

June 27 also saw the release of the Callisto Protocol’s Final Transmission DLC, which Striking Distance Studios billed as “the heart-pounding final chapter” to the main game, which ended on something of a cliffhanger.
