The Best PlayStation Character: Our Face-Off Winner Revealed

1 year 5 months ago

Since its first console was originally released in Japan in 1994, PlayStation has captured the hearts and minds of millions of gamers around the world. Alongside world-class gameplay and cutting-edge graphics, the stories and the characters that inhabit them have been paramount to its success. However, there have been a lot of characters over the years, and it can be tough to know who is the best of the best. So this is exactly why we asked for your help to decide this matter once and for all.

After thousands and thousands of battles with matchups like Cloud Strife vs. Solid Snake and Nathan Drake vs. Aloy, the greatest PlayStation character, according to you, has been decided. Who took the top spot? Drumroll please...

BOY... what a choice. With an 89.4% win percentage that's worthy of the gods, Kratos has defeated all who stood in his way yet again to claim this coveted Platinum Trophy. The star of God of War Ragnarok and the character who first appeared on PlayStation 2 in 2005 secured victory in 42,088 of his 47,099 battles.

While the chances of Kratos' victory may have been boosted by the recent release of God of War Ragnarok, he is undeniably an iconic character who has gone through some of the greatest character growth we've seen in and out of video games. I mean, we gave both 2018's God of War and this year's God of War Ragnarok a 10/10, and a big reason why was Kratos and Atreus' moving journey outside of the combat and angry screams.

Streets of Rage Composer is Making a Brand-New Game... for the Sega Genesis

1 year 5 months ago

For the first time in nearly three decades, video game composer and designer Yuzo Koshiro is working on a new game for the Sega Genesis.

Koshiro is best known for contributing music to classic game series like Streets of Rage, The Revenge of Shinobi, Actraiser, Ys, and more. Now, the developer is working on a brand new shoot 'em up game designed for the original Genesis/Mega Drive hardware.

As revealed on Twitter, Koshiro posted a couple of images of the game that depict a spaceship flying through what appears to be an alien planet.

Koshiro wrote, "It looks like an old shoot 'em up but is a new game we're developing, harkening back to famous franchises in the 80s. We will release it for MD/Genesis. I'm making the soundtrack and have been back also as a game designer since Beyond Oasis."

The composer added that the soundtrack and sound effects will run off the authentic hardware, as well.

The game is under development at Ancient, which has been Koshiro's studio since the 1990s. This new title will be the first Genesis game from Koshiro since 1994's Beyond Oasis.

Sonic Frontiers 2023 Roadmap Revealed, Adds New Playable Characters and Story

1 year 5 months ago

Sega has revealed the 2023 content roadmap for Sonic Frontiers. The game will receive 3 updates throughout the year, including a new playable character and story.

In a roadmap, Sega revealed the first update will include a Juke Box feature which could potentially allow players to choose the music they hear in the game. There will also be a Photo Mode and new Challenge Modes for players to tackle.

The second update will celebrate Sonic’s birthday in some sort of fashion. The franchise's birthday is in June, so that could be a hint as to when the update could potentially arrive. It’ll add more Open Zone Challenges to play and Koko to collect.

The third and final update is the biggest one, which will include more playable characters and a new story expansion. The details of the additional story are currently unknown, but the roadmap depicts Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Sage, so it may revolve around them.

PlayStation Plus Games for December 2022 Announced

1 year 5 months ago

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Plus games for December 2022 are Mass Effect: Legendary Edition (PS4), Biomutant (PS4 and PS5), and Divine Knockout: Founder's Edition (PS4 and PS5).

As revealed on the PlayStation Blog, all three games will be made available at no extra cost to all PlayStation Plus subscribers on December 6.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition turns the three-game line-up into a heftier five as it contains remastered versions of all three original Mass Effect games. Widely considered some of the best RPGs of all time, these modern sci-fi classics follow the story of Commander Shepard as they embark on several galaxy ending missions.

In our 9/10 review of what we called the best of the bunch, IGN said: "Mass Effect 2's Legendary Edition upgrades the graphics to near-modern standards and lets us immerse ourselves in the best game in BioWare's epic RPG trilogy all over again."

Biomutant is another RPG, this time set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world full of kung-fu. Players can blend together melee combat with shooting and mutant abilities as they seek to save (or destroy) their complex planet.

Overwatch 2: Sojourn the Main Target of Nerfs in Season 2 Update

1 year 5 months ago

Blizzard Entertainment has revealed what we can expect from Season 2 of Overwatch 2, including balancing updates, limited-time events, skins, and more ahead of its December 6 launch date.

Alongside the introduction of the new Omnic revolutionary tank hero Ramattra and the winding Shambali Monastery Escort map, Season 2 is also bringing some important balancing changes, according to Blizzard Entertainment’s official blog post.

Most significantly, Blizzard Entertainment has moved to nerf the damage hero Sojourn, who according to a blog post on the company’s website has been dominating the high-skill competitive scene in recent weeks, while “remaining a challenge for players without the same mechanical skills”.

To address the issue, the developers announced that they would be “focussing on the lethality of her Rail Gun at distance for Season 2”. This has been done to encourage players of all skills to use Sojurn’s mobility and her power slide to “close the distance for more devastating right-clicks”.

Final Fantasy 16 Will Be Showcased at The Game Awards

1 year 5 months ago

Today the organizers of The Game Awards took to Twitter to announce that we can expect news about Final Fantasy XVI.

Producer Naoki Yoshida himself (whom you may also know as producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV) will be on stage to deliver a special live presentation.

At the moment, the content of the presentation remains a mystery but considering that the game is nearly complete (as revealed a few weeks ago by Yoshida-san himself), it’s likely that Square Enix is ready to provide an extensive look at what we can expect.

It remains to be seen whether a release date may be announced, since, for now, Final Fantasy XVI only has a generic release window in Summer 2023 for PS5. Yoshida-san expressed confidence in managing to hit it, so having a precise release date half a year before the game’s launch doesn’t seem out of the question. We’ll have to wait and see.

The game promises a much darker atmosphere compared to your usual Final Fantasy game, as you can see in the latest trailer. It’s set in the realm of Valisthea and comes with a rich cast of characters including the Dominants, men and women who can command great power. Of course, long-standing elements found in the final fantasy series like summons and chocobos will still be present despite the slight shift in tone.

Fans of Final Fantasy XIV may want to pay attention, as many top developers from Square Enix’s popular MMORPG are involved beyond Naoki Yoshida himself. Among them are composer Masayoshi Soken, director Hiroshi Takai, combat director Ryota Suzuki, and many more.

Review: Lover Pretend Doesn’t Need to Fake Anything Switch Otome game

Forbidden love is a popular topic when it comes to romantic stories. Star-crossed lovers, and what-not. Lover Pretend, the latest Otomate Switch otome game picked up by Aksys, banks its entire premise on the concept. What’s the element that makes it all so scandalous? Almost all of your love interests could be your half-brother! Odds of Incidental incest aside, it’s a surprisingly wholesome visual novel!

Lover Pretend follows a young woman named Chiyuki Ueda who dreams of becoming a script writer like her deceased mother. (You can change her first name.) Her mom was the writer for a very well-known and beloved romantic movie. That’s also how she met Chiyuki’s father. Now in college and with the son of the screenwriter of that film as her mentor, she gets an opportunity to work as his assistant on a new film. The best part? Many of the people who worked on her mother’s movie are all working together on it. She’ll get a chance to find out if people like the original writer, director, or producer could be her father. At the same time, she’ll also get a chance to get close to people like the son of that film’s lead actor and the son of that film’s director and find love with them. However, because there is that connection, they could be her siblings.

Sable update sends you fishing in the desert

In a game about someone navigating the competing pressures and existential angst inherent to choosing a career, it seems appropriate that an update would let them sack it all off and go fishing. Sable hasn't quite done that, because yesterday's update sends you hover-biking off after enough fish to earn the right to don the new, professional mask of a desert angler.

On your bike, then.

Organizers of the Smash World Tour have announced its 2022 championship tournament and its 2023 series of events have been canceled following a notice from Nintendo telling them they could no longer operate their tournament.

“Without any warning, we received notice the night before Thanksgiving from Nintendo that we could no longer operate. This was especially shocking given our discourse with Nintendo the past twelve months. Since then, we have been working around the clock to take the proper steps logistically, as well as to prepare this statement with proper legal guidance.”

The Smash World Tour boasted over 6,400 live events worldwide according to organizers with an attendance of over 325,000. This year’s championship was also set to have the largest prize pool in competitive Smash Bros. history at $250,000.

Assassin’s Creed Blade & Sorcery Mod Lets You Become Ezio Auditore

1 year 5 months ago

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the glory of an Assassin’s Creed game in first-person, a new mod is here to make all your dreams come true. A modder for the “medieval fantasy sandbox” VR game Blade & Sorcery took it upon themselves to bring Ezio Auditore into the game for some solid first-person action. A YouTuber even took it upon themselves to release a little cinematic trailer for the mod.

The video itself is a lengthy presentation of nearly 15 minutes. If you have been wanting some classic (but also new) Assassin’s Creed action, you’ll definitely want to watch the whole thing.

While the video comes from the YouTube channel DemoAkuroVR, all the wonderfully rendered skin and map mods from the video were created by modder JoshonNexus9. Warhammer 40K: Darktide Review – Flawed But Oozing Potential

1 year 5 months ago

Warhammer 40K: Darktide on PC

Fatshark studios, the creator of the latest Warhammer fantasy coop experience, is a unique game development team best known for their fresh take on the renowned Left for Dead style of coop gameplay. Warhammer Vermintide, both 1 & 2, are truly great games, and the second may even be considered a masterpiece. However, does its newest title, Warhammer 40k: Darktide, live up to its predecessors?

Warhammer 40k: Darktide is a game about prisoners rising to save the city of Tertium from hordes of foes enslaved against their will for a minor offense. From the beginning of your servitude, you will go mission to mission endlessly until you are no longer useful to the Emperor.

It’s a dark and straightforward story, but well done with a bitter undertone; may I remind you, Warhammer 40k has a tale of an ork that goes back in time to duplicate his favorite weapon and eliminates himself from existence. Simple, grim, and enjoyable stories are what Warhammer is best at.

Harvestella Review – So Much For So Little

Harvestella Review

Reviewed on: Switch
Platform: Switch, PC
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Release:
Rating: Teen

Harvestella wants to be a jack of two trades, but winds up a master of none. Part action-RPG, part farming/life simulation, this combination can sometimes be enjoyable, but the two styles clash more often than not. The result is a sluggish grind more likely to repel fans of each genre than bring them together.

As an amnesiac warrior, you awaken on the outskirts of a quaint village, unaware of your origin and purpose. Four powerful, monolithic crystals called Seaslight govern the environmental stability of the picturesque continent, namely its seasons. However, a deadly fifth season called Quietus occurs between each of the four normal seasons, wiping out crops and endangering humans. This strange normalcy becomes unstable when the Seaslight begin behaving irregularly, seemingly triggered by the mysterious arrival of Aria, a young scientist from the distant future. Like you, Aria is clueless about how she got here, so you partner up to discover your respective origins while also combating a global crisis. Oh, and building a nice farm too.

Todd Howard says Starfield will let you get into "more complex relationships"

Romance has never been Bethesda's strong suit, from Skyrim's barebones marriage system to Fallout 4's bonus-XP-granting fade-to-black cutscenes. Starfield will be a little more nuanced than that, suggests executive producer Todd Howard, offering more complex romance options than Fallout's.

That's just one detail from a nearly 3 hour-long interview Howard gave on the Lex Fridman podcast, where he also talks scrapping space strandings, and (gasp) why he prefers to play on consoles to PC.

Warframe's Lua's Prey update adds new survival challenges and Joe-Mad-designed Voruna

1 year 5 months ago

Warframe's highly anticipated The Duviri Paradox expansion might be delayed, but today brings a little something new to tide players over until its arrival next year, courtesy of the survival-based Lua's Prey update, available now on all platforms.

"As The Void exposes ancient scars and long-forgotten secrets," developer Digital Extremes says of its latest update, "something sinister rumbles on Lua as the Grineer descend upon these newly exposed halls seeking possible treasure, corrupted by its long-dormant Orokin Neural Sentry. Under the guidance of The Lotus, the Tenno embark on a mission to investigate this destroyed piece of Lua formerly used to monitor Void Conjunctions."

Lua's Prey serves as a "light prequel" to The Duviri Paradox, adding two new story-based Conjunction Survival missions featuring thematic teasers for next year's expansion. These can be located at two newly added Lua nodes - Yuvarium and Circulus - and challenge players to maintain Life Support in the usual way. The twist, though, is that a Thrax enemy will spawn after every successful Survival round, increasing Life Support depletion by 50% while it remains alive, and requiring players to summon their Necramechs in order to defeat it.

1 year 5 months ago

Hollywood's favorite martial arts legend Bruce Lee is getting the big screen treatment at Sony. Ang Lee, renowned for his work on movies like Life of Pi and Brokeback Mountain, is directing the biopic, and his son, Mason Lee, is attached to star in the film as the Chinese American star.

According to Deadline, the film is currently in development at Sony's 3000 Pictures with Dan Futterman adapting the script from Jean Castelli, Alex Law and Mabel Cheung and Wells Tower's earlier screenplays. Futterman's previous writing credits include hits like Capote and Foxcatcher.

“Accepted as neither fully American nor Fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Gung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” Ang Lee said in a statement. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”

Bruce Lee made a name for himself in Hollywood during the 1960's and early 70's before his untimely death in 1973. The star popularized martial arts across the globe with hits like Fists of Fury, Enter the Dragon and The Way of the Dragon. Now, the story behind the legend is coming to the silver screen under the tutilage of an Oscar-winning director.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Freeware Embraer E170 Gets Dev Update & Screenshots; Bremen Airport & More Released

1 year 5 months ago

Today Third-party developers had relevant news and releases to share about Microsoft Flight Simulator add-ons including aircraft and scenery.

We start with Ouroboros, which provided a development update and new renders of its freeware Embraer E170.

The update focuses mostly on interior modeling, with the flight deck being based on a 3D scan of the real aircraft to help ensure that it’s as close as possible to it. The modeling of the cabin has been started and we get to see its work-in-progress state, albeit a lot of work remains to be done in terms of detail. The team initially planned to have the cabin in an update after release, but it’ll now come at launch.

Work on the fuselage is now complete and more accurate than the previous versions of the model. The last phase of modeling will involve adjusting the flight deck to the proportions provided by the 3D scan mentioned above.

The fuselage is built in a modular way, so the E175 and E190’s models should be done very quickly. This also saves memory resources, as you can see explained in the slides below.

To follow the developer’s progress, you can check out its Discord server.

Universal Is Making a Movie About a Bear on Cocaine That Was Inspired by True Events

1 year 5 months ago

While some might argue that Hollywood is being overrun with superhero flicks, and that’s all anyone wants to make, there’s still plenty of room for some absolutely bonkers films. That brings us to the movie mentioned in the headline: Cocaine Bear.

It’s not simply enough that there will be a movie called Cocaine Bear that will most certainly feature a bear on cocaine, but it’s not truly a work of fiction. That’s right, back in 1985, there was a bear that got into a stash of cocaine. Not just a little cocaine, either. The real-life bear was high on 15 pounds of cocaine.

The true story is that a drug smuggler dropped a duffel bag of cocaine from the plane he was piloting because the plane was overloaded. One lucky 1750-pound bear just happened to find this horde of cocaine and then ripped into it. The bear was reportedly found surrounded by 40 opened bags and apparently hadn’t moved around after ingesting the cocaine. As you might have guessed, it sadly didn’t survive.

But that’s the true story. The movie version looks something a bit more like this.

You can play 10 hours of Need For Speed: Unbound right now with Game Pass

Need For Speed Unbound technically isn't out until December 2nd, but you can scoot in right now if you've got Game Pass and are willing to download EA's app. It's available as part of EA's Game Trials, so you'll only be able to play for 10 hours before you're kicked out, but that's time for cop chases and powerslides a-plenty.

I haven't played a Need For Speed game since I was 13 and this wasn't on my radar at all, but yeah, sure, let's drive. It looks just like the games I remember but with optional silly animated wings and dust trails.

Fire Emblem Engage Introduces Cheery Princess Timerra

1 year 5 months ago

fire emblem engage timerra

Nintendo released some more information on Timerra, who will be a playable character in the upcoming TRPG Fire Emblem Engage. Timerra is the crown princess of Solm, as well as the older sister of Fogato. She loves to sing and party, and there will be a cutscene in which she sings for the protagonists.

https://twitter.com/FireEmblemJP/status/1597864256694677504

The Fire Emblem Japanese Twitter account shared several tweets introducing Timerra. She is bright, innocent, and cheerful. Perhaps this is the result of growing up in a country like Solm, which values and loves freedom. She will start off as a Sentinel, which uses Lance weapons. You can check out a video of Timerra in action on her character page from the official Fire Emblem Engage website.

In the Japanese dub of the game, Ami Koshimizu will be Timerra’s voice actress. Koshimizu previously appeared as Kallen in Code Geass, Yukiko in Persona 4, and Beidou in Genshin Impact. It is unknown at this point who will voice Timerra in the English dub of the game.

David Cage Says Star Wars: Eclipse Won't be a 'Skin of Detroit,' Talks Quantic Dreams' Future

1 year 5 months ago

Quantic Dream is hard at work on Star Wars Eclipse, a new adventure game set in the High Republic era of Star Wars – a golden age of Jedi hundreds of years before the birth of Anakin Skywalker. While a lavish teaser trailer paints a thrilling picture of the game’s setting, details are still scarce.

During a recent interview at G-Star in South Korea, director, writer and Quantic Dream founder David Cage told IGN Japan that Star Wars Eclipse is "the most ambitious project of our studio." While he did not go into detail about the game, he gave us some new insights to what we can expect.

Among other things, Cage reiterates that Star Wars Eclipse will be markedly different from Detroit: Become Human, which released on PlayStation 4 back in 2018 and PC the year after. In particular, Detroit: Become Human was more about "anticipation" than sci-fi, imagining a near future in which androids become sentient.

Quantic Dream Doesn't Have Plans to Adapt Any of Its Games for Movies or TV

1 year 5 months ago

If you’re expecting any of Quantic Dream’s cinematic games to jump to the big screen, don’t. Company president David Cage says the studio isn’t actively pursuing selling the rights to its games for movie adaptations.

But that doesn’t mean Quantic Dream is ignoring movies and TV altogether. Cage says he’s actively following the rise of interactive TV, similar to what Netflix did with Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch.

“[I]f it’s about selling the rights to one of our games to a movie company so they make a movie, it’s not necessarily something we’re actively pursuing,” says Cage in an interview with IGN Japan.

However, Cage says whether Quantic Dream is interested in the TV medium is a separate question entirely. “It’s also interesting to see what Netflix is doing and what other people are doing, experimenting with interactive TV shows. Because it’s really mainstream, it’s about talking to non-gamers, to anyone, and giving them access to the possibility to change the course of the story based on their choices.”

Cage calls this a “simplified version” of the games Quantic Dream already makes but the appeal lies in the chance of reaching a new audience on a new platform with a different interface. But while the interest is there, Cage says “there’s no concrete plan right now with all these things, it’s more like things we keep looking at.”

Still, Cage says Netflix’s attempts at interactive TV are exciting and that “there is a future for interactive storytelling in television.”

Playable Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose Headed to Sonic Frontiers

1 year 5 months ago

sonic frontiers 2023 road map

Sega planned plenty of content for Sonic Frontiers in 2023, like playable Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. So far, we know that there will be three major updates, culminating in the new story and playable characters. There will also be lots of new mechanics, such as a Juke Box, Photo mode, and Open Zone Challenges. More information for everything will come out closer to the release dates.

All of these updates will be free. Players will not need to purchase a DLC pack or Season Pass in order to access any of the new updates. While we do not yet know the exact dates, we do know the order that things will occur. Update 1 will bring with it the Juke Box, Photo Mode, and New Challenge Modes. Update 2 will have Sonic’s Birthday, Open Zone Challenges, and a new Koco. Finally, Update 3 will add Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose as playable Sonic Frontiers characters, as well as the new storyline.

While not DLC, the first major patch for Sonic Frontiers recently came out for PlayStation consoles. This patch fixed both major and minor bugs, including one where a boss will disappear if you retry the fight. Patch 1.10 will appear on other consoles as well.
