Man's best friend to get own console and games thanks to UK startup

1 year 5 months ago

There are plans afoot (or should that be, apaw) to introduce a console, complete with its own video games, that is tailored exclusively to dogs. After all, who says man should have all the fun.

The brainchild of the UK-based startup Joipaw, the Joipaw Console will come with a "dog-tailored touchscreen, a height-adjustable stand and an automated treat dispenser." It will run interactive puzzle games, such as a whack-a-mole challenge, that are "constantly new and challenging" for man's best friend (thanks, Axios).

"Add speakers, a microphone and a Full HD camera, and you have the smartest dog tech product to ever hit the market," Joipaw proclaims on the console's reservation page.

Starship Troopers: Extermination Announced

1 year 5 months ago

Developer Offworld Industries has announced Starship Troopers: Extermination, an upcoming 12-player PvE first-person shooter for PC that's inspired by the cult-classic 1997 sci-fi film. It's due to launch into Early Access sometime in 2023. Take a look at the announcement trailer above and the first screenshots in the gallery below.

Starship Troopers: Extermination promises squad-based, large-scale battles against the bugs you remember from the movie. You'll play as a trooper in the elite Deep Space Vanguard as one of three playable classes: Assault, Support, and Defense. New perks and gear will unlock as you progress in the persistent class progression system.

More details: Extermination will have a Titanfall-like ping system for easier player-to-player communication in the middle of a firefight, while tougher bugs will start swarming as the threat level increases. You'll also need to build and maintain your own defenses – erecting walls, ammo stations, lookouts, and more.

A huge five-zone map promises a scale of grandeur as you battle five different bug types. Check out the first gameplay teaser and some exclusive concept art below:

Call Of Duty Money Glitch Is Making DMZ Players Unfairly Rich

1 year 5 months ago

To say the in-game economy of Call of Duty’s DMZ mode is funny is an understatement. $40 bucks for a roll of tape? A picture of a dog for $10? $100 for soothing hand cream? (watch out, Sephora). A recently discovered glitch, however, is flooding players’ backpacks with substantial amounts of cash—if they can pull off…

Next New Shonen Jump Manga Series is Ichigoki’s Under Control

1 year 5 months ago

Next New Shonen Jump Manga Series is Ichigoki's Under Control

Shonen Jump’s run of new manga series continues with Ichigoki’s Under Control. This is the third of four new titles debuting in the magazine. It’s written by Seiji Hayashi, who also created I’m from Japan. People can read it in English via Viz Media and Manga Plus.

Ichigoki’s Under Control begins with Kai Ichigoki at school. However, when his friends talk to him, his head turns 180 degrees around. It’s then revealed that his childhood friend Misao Chiisaki is inside his head, essentially piloting him like a mech. She’s essentially a teen mad scientist. After a previous experiment left her incredibly small, Kai took her to the zoo to extract certain ingredients. While doing so, a gorilla attack killed Kai. However, Misao resurrected him by turning him into a robot and acting as his pilot. If she isn’t in the cockpit, his body goes haywire. Until she can make him into a full cyborg, the two need to learn to get by together.

The two other new Shonen Jump manga series are The Ichinose Family’s Deadly Sins and Cipher Academy. The fourth one will appear in December 2022.

Atelier Ryza 3 Figure Features Her New Outfit

As part of the Good Smile Company WonHobby G 2022 Autumn announcements, the Atelier Ryza 3 Reisalin Stout figure appeared. It appears to be rather far along in development. The example shown during the event was a painted prototype.

Here's a closer look at Good Smile Company's first Atelier Ryza 3 figure. She's wielding a staff, as usual. This new one looks like a variation of Celestial Seeker, a weapon she wielded in the original game. There's the same pinwheel design at the top. There's also a flag attached to the top of it. As for her outfit, it calls back to ones worn in the past game both in terms of its color scheme and style.

New Cyberpunk Game Likely Won’t Start Pre-Production in 2023 but Will Enter Concept Phase

1 year 5 months ago

Today, during the CD Projekt Group earnings presentation, the developer shared more details about its plans for the previously-announced sequel of Cyberpunk 2077.

President and joint CEO Adam Kiciński was asked whether CD Projekt expects to enter the pre-production phase of the sequel in 2023.

He mentioned that the developer will start working on the next full Cyberpunk game after releasing the expansion “Phantom Liberty”. Initially, there will be a research and concept phase, which formally isn’t defined as “pre-production” yet. Once the concept is ready, the development will start with pre-production.

From that formal point of view, pre-production probably won’t begin in 2023. That being said, the concept phase will begin next year with smaller teams than the ones working on Phantom Liberty as some developers will join work on the next mainline The Witcher Game (cod-named Polaris).

Incidentally, while the developer did not confirm a second season for the smash-hit anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners, they confirmed plans to do more in the trans-media field with linear media like animation or live-action. We can expect announcements on that front when they are ready.

Cyberpunk 2077 & Witcher Developer CD Projekt Announces Best Financial Q3 of its History

1 year 5 months ago

Today CD Projekt announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2022.

We hear from chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz that the release of Cyberpunk Edgerunners on Netflix and the positive reception of the related update for the game “visibly” affected sales of Cyberpunk 2077, and the developers are “filled with pride” by the fact that it passed 20 million units sold.

President and joint CEO Adam Kiciński also added that the share of recent positive reviews for the game exceeded 90%.

We also hear that the developer enjoyed the best financial third quarter of its entire history both for revenue and profit. Revenue was at 246 million PLN (almost $55 million) mostly due to strong sales of Cyberpunk 2077, which enjoyed its best sales quarter ever. That’s a 70% growth year-on-year.

On top of that, net profit was 99 million PLN (just south of $22 million) up 504% year-on-year. That’s a 40.2% profitability ratio across the CD Projekt group. The Profitability ratio for the CD Projekt RED segment alone (which focuses on game development) was a whopping 47%.

Nielubowicz added that while Q3 is usually the weakest quarter of the year, this year it is the strongest so far.

Best Cyber Monday gaming laptop deals 2022

Unlike with most flavours of PC hardware, the list of good Cyber Monday gaming laptop deals is noticeably smaller than the catalogue of quality, discounted notebooks that Black Friday brought. Still, we’re not out of luck yet, nor out of laptops – as you’ll see below, there’s still a variety of deals to choose from, especially in the UK.

Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Board Game is 6,000% over its Kickstarter target

1 year 5 months ago

Classic RPG Heroes of Might and Magic III has been transmuted into a board game, with its Kickstarter campaign currently on over 2.6 million pounds. That's 6000% over its £43,000 funding goal. You people want this. Are you sure you want this?

The board game is a hybrid of competitive deckbuilding and exploration, where 1-4 players travel around an overworld collecting cards to play in separate combat encounters. I do dig deckbuilding, but I suspect this might lack a little magic to anyone who isn't after a nostalgia kick.

Mirrorshades are an infosec hazard on video calls, so what should cyberpunks wear now?

1 year 5 months ago

Mirrorshades cannot be the iconic eyewear of modern-day cyberpunk, I learned during a Microsoft Teams meeting. For decades, cyberpunks, hackers, and internauts have donned a cool pair of shiny shades to strike a cool pose. But mirrorshades are a serious security hazard in this age of video calls: other people can see your screen and desk reflected in the lenses. If you're mirrored up, people can gain access to private data or see if you are, for example, playing Windows Solitaire instead of paying attention to the meeting. So what's a 21st-century cyberpunk to wear? It's not like you can go without cool glasses (or stop playing Solitaire during meetings). I have ideas.

Roguelite shooter Synced resurfaces with new gameplay trailer ahead of its open beta

1 year 5 months ago

Synced (formerly Synced: Off Planet) is heading into open beta on December 10th, and has quite a few hyphenated terms applied to it. This sci-fi game is both squad-based and match-based, a roguelite hero-shooter, and Tencent's publishing division Level Infinite even go as far as describing it as a rogue-looter, of all things. Whatever you want to call it, though, the main thrust of the game is about finding and taming machine creatures known as Nanos in a techno-apocalypse, mostly so you can battle more Nanos inside a special sealed zone called The Meridian. Come and see what to expect when the beta begins in an exclusive gameplay trailer below.

I've spent two weeks trying to download a 3-year-old Nancy Drew game

1 year 5 months ago

For what has felt like my entire life (but was probably only the months of October and November) every ad I was served on YouTube was for a sale on Her Interactive's Nancy Drew games. I remember it not only because the content is burned into my brain, but because they themed it around getting involved in cosplay, and got a bunch of cosplayers - and no disprespect to them, because they did a great job - to dress as characters from the games. And I kept thinking, like... what? Apart from Ms Drew, what characters are worth cosplaying from a series of licensed Nancy Drew puzzle games?

Anyway it clearly didn't matter, because I saw the ads so often that I went and bought the most recent one out of curiosity. You win, Her Interactive! Midnight In Salem is a spooky mystery wherein Nancy Drew must solve an arson case (with the Hardy Boys in tow, no less) that has possible occult tie ins. It came out in 2019, and is Nancy Drew #33. 33 Nancy Drew games! Imagine. Also, I cannot download it and I have spent over two weeks trying.

AMD's Ryzen 9 7900X is down to £456.70 in a late Cyber Monday CPU deal

It was only a few days hence that we spotted a low price on the Ryzen 9 7900X, but for Cyber Monday there's an even better deal on offer at Amazon UK.

The deal price is £456.70, versus a normal price of £600, and is for stock from Amazon US - but that includes shipping, import duty and all other potential fees. There's even the possibility that fees are less than expected, as several US items I've ordered from Amazons overseas have come with small discounts.

Our favourite lightweight gaming mouse is heavily discounted at Amazon UK

The Pulsefire Haste and Pulsefire Haste Wireless are ideal for competitive and casual gaming alike, with lightweight designs and high-end specs, and now you can pick either for little.

The wired Pulsefire Haste (£20, normally £50) is the cheaper and lighter option, weighing in at 59 grams, while the wireless Pulsefire Haste Wireless (£40, normally £90) offers more freedom but requires recharging every 100 hours. It also weighs a tiny bit more, at 61 grams.

DF Direct Weekly: will this console generation really last until 2027/2028?

1 year 5 months ago

The regulatory battles between Sony and Microsoft over the latter's Activision Blizzard acquisition are throwing up all manner of headline stories - such as Xbox effectively positioning themselves as third out of three in terms of the major console platform holders, Sony writing off its chances of ever creating an FPS as potent as Call of Duty - and perhaps most intriguing of all, acknowledgement that this console generation is likely to persist until 2027 or even 2028.

The various legal documents make for great reading but do need to be treated with more than a little caution. On the face of it, it appears like we're getting a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the platform holders, who are producing all manner of never-seen-before 'insider' information. However, we also need to remember that all of these disclosures are being driven by very specific agendas and nothing should be taken at face value, no matter how intriguing the information may be.

With that said, the idea of a prolonged console generation absolutely has merit. I'm not sure it's fully understood how hard Microsoft and Sony pushed to make PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as powerful as they were, given the technologies available to them. Various factors - outlined in depth in this interview with Xbox's chief system architect - demonstrate that the routes forward in producing any kind of next-gen console are (right now, at least) limited to say the least. The basic assumptions we have about new technology being both more performant and cheaper are clearly being challenged.

Troy Baker's Perspective on The Last of Us Ending Changed After Having a Child

1 year 5 months ago

Troy Baker has revealed how the birth of his son helped him understand Joel’s controversial decision at the climax of The Last of Us Part 1, and talked about his ongoing wish to play Daredevil during an at times emotional appearance at the Milan Games Week in Italy.

In a recording of the interview, Baker — who voiced protagonist Joel Miller in The Last of Us Part 1 - explained that he was at a “disadvantage” to the game’s writer and creative director Neil Druckmann when it came to relating to Joel’s decisions.

Warning: This section contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part 1

Upon being asked if Baker would have made the same decisions as Joel, the actor replied that, “When we were making part one I was at a disadvantage to Neil, because Neil was a father. I was acting. This was a very real possibility for him — what do I look like in the event that I lose my daughter.”

Specifically, Baker was referring to Joel’s decision to save Ellie at the climax of the game, by preventing Firefly scientists from performing a fatal operation on her that could have led to a cure for the cordyceps infection that was destroying mankind. In the time since making the game, Baker became a father.

Just Cause Studio Employees Call for Change Amid Year-Long Battle Over Controversial Hire

1 year 5 months ago

After months of back and forth between employees and management, Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios – not to be confused with Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software – has published a public apology to its employees for its mishandling of a controversial hire.

The full statement can be read here under the section titled "Our Journey", and includes the following:

There have been times when we’ve had more to learn than we realized, and reflecting on where we’ve been is an important part of our journey forward.
We’re sorry we haven’t gotten things right every time.
During those times, the tireless work of Avalanchers who dedicate their attention and effort to improving the company has been invaluable.
The progress we can celebrate today is thanks to the compassion and convictions of our employees. To all Avalanchers who have spoken up throughout the years, engaged in our DEI efforts, and helped us throughout this journey, we want to say this:
Thank you for your contributions. You have our deepest respect, and we are grateful to you.

While Avalanche didn't go into the specific reasons for adding this apology to its website, IGN has spoken to a number of sources familiar with the situation at the company over the last few weeks, and who have shared more details on how Avalanche got here. According to their accounts, Avalanche's apology comes more than a year after the company hired a high-level individual who had been publicly accused of inappropriate workplace behavior toward female employees at his former company. IGN has verified the public allegations against the employee in question, but is choosing not to identify him here.

The Witcher Remake Will Be Open World, CD Projekt Red Confirms

1 year 5 months ago

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its Unreal Engine 5 remake of 2007's The Witcher will be fully open world.

Revealed during its third quarter financial results, CD Projekt Red briefly mentioned its announcement of The Witcher Remake, saying that it will be a "story-driven, single player open world RPG".

The studio had previously only confirmed that it would be another "full-fledged" Witcher game, but as the original is not open world, there was still speculation whether or not the remake would resemble the 2007 version or something closer to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

CD Projekt Red didn't say anything else about the new game, reiterating its point made in October that "it's gonna be a while until we can share more details."

"The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” added studio head Adam Badowski at the time.

The original Witcher saw Geralt adventure around the Temerian capital of Vizima, a location briefly visited in The Witcher 3. While players could only access the royal castle in the third game, however, the entirety of Vizima, its outskirts, and more will be opened up in The Witcher remake.

DC Will Make Games Connected to Its Film Universe, James Gunn Confirms

1 year 5 months ago

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that the new DC film universe will be linked to future video games that exist in the same canon.

As reported by Eurogamer, Gunn was asked on Twitter if the DCEU (which now seems to be rebranded as just the DCU) will incorporate more forms of entertainment down the line, to which he replied, "yes, most definitely.

"The DCU will be connected across film and TV (and animation)," he added. When another fan asked if there are plans for games to be connected to the DCU too, Gunn replied plainly: "Yes."

Nothing else was said, but it does confirm a trend away from Marvel's strategy of building a shared universe across its films and a separate one across its games. We do know that Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran begun work on an eight to ten year plan for DC films, TV shows, animation, and more, however, meaning we'll likely see a game or two materialise in this time too.

The Rarest Card In Magic: The Gathering's Anniversary Set Is One In $100,000 Worth of Packs

1 year 5 months ago

The rarest card in Magic: The Gathering's pricey Anniversary Set has a pull-rate of one in every 410 packs, meaning players would need to spend more than $100,000 on average to find one.

Statistics provided to IGN by Magic: The Gathering drafting website DraftSim show that one retro Black Lotus card - a reprint of the most coveted trading card of all time - is present in exactly $102,897 worth of booster packs.

Wizards of the Cost is only selling the Anniversary Set as a $999 product containing four booster packs with random cards. Despite the high price, however, the Black Lotus (alongside every other card) is only a proxy version and therefore can't be used in tournament play, and it's currently unknown if they will be worth anything to collectors.

Normal versions of each retro card, which feature a modern Magic: The Gathering style compared to the classic look, are also available at a slightly increased rate, but this version of the Black Lotus is still only available in every 95 booster packs (so 96 given they're four per set), meaning $23,976 worth.

These packs are completely random though, meaning players may pull a Black Lotus after buying one set at $999 or may not even pull one after dropping the $100,000. Using binomial distribution to calculate the risk, DraftSim shows there's still a 36% chance of not getting a normal Black Lotus after 96 packs and a 1% chance of not getting the retro after opening 410 packs.
