Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Is a Worthy Remake of the PSP’s Best RPG

1 year 5 months ago

Square Enix’s Crisis Core remake is just as good as you remember it because if you, like me, have very fond but inaccurate memories of blasting through Midgar with Zack on the PSP back in 2007, going back to that original game now will likely be a bit of a shock. Jagged hair ends, slightly pixelated edges on our main characters’ clothes, and those dead lifeless eyes (definitely not mako-infused, those)… The original Crisis Core was lauded for its beautiful graphics when it first released, but I’d be lying if I said they still held up well today.

Booting up Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion this past week, it was like being transported back to 2007. The iconic train opening sequence, Zack’s flippant “Oh yeah!” as he somersaults out of the chopper, it’s all there. Beat for beat. My rose-colored memories of Crisis Core on the PSP came flooding back when I gained control of Zack for the first time; it felt like finally going home after being away for years. Your fondest memories of, well, anything will always seem perfect in your head, and Square Enix has captured that feeling wonderfully with Reunion.

Crisis Core serves as a prequel to the legendary Final Fantasy VII. It takes place years before Cloud becomes the cold mercenary we know him as, and the story focuses on SOLDIER 2nd Class, Zack Fair. Unlike Cloud, Zack is warm with a sunny disposition. He’s the kinda guy you always want around because he’s just that fun and goofy, though he isn’t afraid to show some serious emotional growth over the course of the story as well.

Here’s Why Tifa Had Leather Gloves in FFVII Remake Chapter 3

1 year 5 months ago

ffvii remake tifa leather gloves header

According to a development diary tweet for FFVII Remake, the team had to implement a change to Tifa’s gloves in a Chapter 3 cutscene. This is the scene in which Tifa makes a cocktail for Cloud when they visit Seventh Heaven together. In the scene, Tifa is wearing Leather Gloves no matter what she might equip beforehand.

If the player had equipped the Mythril Claws onto Tifa, she will still wear them in this cutscene. However, the development team realized something. They have such an impressive aura that they can alter the mood of the whole scene. For reference, Tifa makes two cocktails for Cloud, with Cloud complimenting her second one. Afterwards, Tifa chuckles out of embarrassment.

[gallery columns="2" ids="941425,941426" link="file"]

However, the development team worried that the Mythril Claws would give off such intensity that the meaning of Tifa’s laugh would change. So no matter what, Tifa will always wear Leather Gloves in this FFVII Remake Chapter 3 scene, so as to preserve the atmosphere of her conversation with Cloud.

Sony has revealed a set of six motion-tracking gadgets that will allow a user's body to influence an avatar's moves.

Known as Mocopi, this set will enable mobile motion capture, thanks to sensors worn around a user's head, waist, wrists and ankles. When paired with the compatible smartphone app, these trackers can then be used to animate an avatar within said app.

In addition to adding your avatar to real-world locations, users will also be able to combine avatars and background images within the app. Meanwhile, it will also use VRChat as a motion input device. You can see just how Mocopi looks in action via the trailer below.

Preview: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion Sticks to Its Roots

1 year 5 months ago

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion

Final Fantasy VII Remake set a precedent for Square Enix remakes going forward. The entire combat system was overhauled to make the game appeal to more modern sensibilities and a broader audience. With gameplay pivoting from ATB turn-based battles to something more action oriented, it positioned the future of the franchise away from its more classic elements. But before it came another game that shook up the formula, and it wasn’t Final Fantasy XV. It was Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, a prequel entry to the much beloved Final Fantasy VII, now it is coming back with its Reunion remaster.

After the resounding success of Final Fantasy VII Remake, remastering Crisis Core seemed like the most logical solution. But what Square Enix has provided is a little more than just a standard remaster. All characters in the game are fully voiced, and the in-game graphics have been given a significant overhaul. While Zack no longer looks close to his original model or even cinematic model, given how the art direction for the series shifted, the upgrade feels decent enough in its overall presentation. It helps make the experience look more up-to-date and appealing to those unfamiliar with the original release on the PlayStation Portable.

The Witcher 1 Remake Will Be Open-World, CDPR Says

1 year 5 months ago

The Witcher 1 Remake open-world game CDPR new gen

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has revealed that its upcoming remake of The Witcher will be open-world.

This news comes by way of a quarterly financial call held yesterday by the company in which CDPR briefly touched on this remake being handled by developer Fool's Theory, as reported by VG247.  While not much was revealed, CDPR did reveal in the slide pictured below that Codename: Canis Majoris, which we now know to be The Witcher Remake, will be a "story-driven, single player open-world RPG" and a "modern reimagining of 2007's The Witcher."

This might come as a surprise because that 2007 game wasn't open-world and instead took players through small hub-like levels in the city of Vizima.

Co-op shooter Starship Troopers: Extermination starts its bug hunt in 2023

1 year 5 months ago

Starship Troopers, Paul Verhoeven’s deliberately scene-chewing take on Robert Heinlein’s dubious classic of military sci-fi, has been adapted for PC a fair bit. Games based on the interstellar action of the movie tend to end up veering towards the strategy genre though, such as the recent Terran Command. Well, Offworld Industries have loaded up a dropship with Starship Troopers: Extermination and plonked the licence right where it belongs on Planet Co-op FPS. It’s targeting a 2023 release, and probably the head carapace of a very confused giant alien insectoid, too. You can watch a short teaser for the game below.

Microsoft could offer concessions to encourage EU regulators to approve their Activision Blizzard buyout

1 year 5 months ago

Microsoft might consider offering Sony a 10-year licensing deal for Call Of Duty to persuade European Union regulators to approve their Activision Blizzard acquisition. Reuters report that sources familiar with the deal claim an offer could come ahead of the European Commission’s January deadline for their statement of objection, a formal list of the body’s concerns about how the $68.7 billion (£57 billion) buyout deal might affect competition within the games industry. If Microsoft show willingness to offer concessions and ease the EU regulator’s competition concerns, that could potentially speed up the regulator’s decision-making process.

FFVII Remake Tifa Voice Actress Returns for Crisis Core Reunion

1 year 5 months ago

FFVII Remake Tifa Voice Actress Returns for Crisis Core Reunion Actor

Square Enix’s latest Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion update confirmed another voice actor for the game, namely that the FFVII Remake actress for Tifa will reprise her role. Britt Baron is back. She’ll provide lines for the heroine, who makes a cameo appearance during the game’s story.

Those familiar with how FFVII’s story goes probably recalls the part Tifa plays in-game. The original touched on an interactions between her and certain Shinra members in Nibelheim. When Tifa acts as Zack and Sephiroth’s guide in her home town in Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion, Baron will play the part.

As a reminder, Baron isn’t just the FFVII Remake and now Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion voice actress for Tifa. She’s played parts in other video games as well. For example, she served as Ada-1 in Destiny 2 and Tessa Crews in Fallout 76. She also plays Livewire in Young Justice. Some of her other recent roles include Justine Biagi in GLOW and Brit Brit Hamsteak in Rob Riggle’s Ski Master Academy.

Square Enix already made some other Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion voice actor announcements before revealing Tifa’s voice actress. Here are the other English voice actors.

See Crisis Core FFVII Reunion’s Buster Sword Battle Stance for Zack

1 year 5 months ago

Square Enix detailed how the Crisis Core FFVII Reunion Buster Sword battle stance system will work and shared a new trailer

As Square Enix mentioned before, the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy remaster does more than make the game look better. There is new content there, like new gameplay elements. Among them is the inclusion of a Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion take on the FFVII Remake Buster Sword Battle Stance system, which lets Zack switch strategies. Square Enix went through it and showed some screenshots in a new update. It also comes up in the just-released Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion launch trailer.

The idea of battle stances came up in FFVII Remake with Cloud. Players could change how his attacks worked by swapping between the Operator and Punisher Modes to prioritize certain sorts of abilities. In Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion, Zack’s Battle Stance lets a person use attack points to change his priorities when attacking with the Buster Sword. Names weren’t mentioned for the stances in the update. However, one prioritizes his abilities, while the other ups his defense and allows him to use Strong Attacks.

Here are the two new screenshots showcasing Strong Attacks.

Athena Bishoujo figure

Previews from the MegaHobby Expo 2022 revealed a new entry into Kotobukiya's "Bishoujo" figure lineup. The latest casts back through fighting game history. Its target? Athena Asamiya, veteran of The King of Fighters. Like others in the line, the Athena Bishoujo figure is based on the updated design from artist Shunya Yamashita. This is the first look at the painted prototype. [Thanks, Dengeki!]

The Athena Bishoujo figure is manufactured from PVC and is sized at 1/7th scale. Athena's costume is based on her appearance from The King of Fighters '98, one of the most iconic entries in the long-running fighting game series. Athena's '98 costume takes inspiration from a Chinese blouse, with gold knotted fasteners down the right breastline. She also wears her fighting gloves, short pants, boots, and hairband with a star accent.

Bohemia asks fans to stop sharing faked real-world war footage made in Arma 3

1 year 5 months ago

Bohemia Interactive, developer of military simulation game Arma 3, has asked fans to watch out for edited in-game videos being shared around social media that are falsely labelled as real-world war footage.

Specifically, Bohemia has called for players and content creators to "use their game footage responsibly", "refrain from using clickbait video titles" and "always state clearly that the video originated from a video game" rather than footage from a real-life conflict.

Arma 3 gameplay videos have a history of being mistaken for real-world footage - even by professional news organisations - and this problem has only increased since the current conflict in Ukraine has begun, Bohemia said.

Macdonald replied to Dailly's update by saying "Ah bugger, I was sure of that - ah well, it's a nice story, but at least I know now!"

Witcher 1 remake will be open-world "modern reimagining"

1 year 5 months ago

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red has described the upcoming remake of the series' first game as a "story-driven, single-player open-world RPG - a modern reimagining of 2007's The Witcher".

It's the first detailed description we've had of the remake, and suggests a more from-the-ground-up reworking of the original role-player than previously thought.

Thanks to the success of The Witcher 3, the series is now thought of as a fully open-world franchise. But that was not the case back in the original Witcher game, which featured a number of separate large maps and various smaller areas.

A Surprisingly Watchable Video Game Movie Adaptation That Audiences Loved Finds New Life on Streaming

1 year 5 months ago

Capcom is one of the largest video game publishers in the world and it owns a multitude of incredibly valuable IP that you’re likely familiar with. However, one common misconception that is often made about the Japanese publisher is the identity of its best-selling property. The answer? Well, most folks opt for the Resident Evil franchise thanks to its many video games, movies, and comics, and that’s a pretty good guess to be honest. However, Resident Evil isn’t the biggest-selling Capcom IP. Actually, the biggest-selling IP owned by Capcom is in fact… the Monster Hunter series. Pretty nuts, right?

That’s right, with 18.5 million units sold, Monster Hunter World is Capcom’s biggest-selling game with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard trailing behind in second place with 11.3 million units sold. Of course, with such a huge following, it was only a matter of time before the Japanese company explored other avenues to extract some extra scratch from their hugely successful franchise. The end result: 2020’s Monster Hunter film.

Skybound's Clementine comic undoes the hopeful ending of Telltale's The Walking Dead, but in a thoughtful way

1 year 5 months ago

A conversation in the RPS Treehouse the other day reminded me that there is only one game I have ever completed for the first time and then finished again, all within the span of a week. That game was The Walking Dead: The Final Season.

Having played all three previous seasons of Telltale's choose-your-own-zombie-apocalypse tearjerker (plus the 400 Days DLC and the Michonne spin-off), it's no surprise that I was incredibly invested in Clementine's story by The Final Season. I'm not a big kid person, typically, but you'd have to be beyond heartless not to love little Clem, wouldn't you? Even though, by the time TFS rolls around, she's grown into medium-sized Clem, and is a bit bloody scary to boot.

Deckbuilding and Japanese myth combine in this gorgeous tabletop strategy game

1 year 5 months ago

Card-based strategy games seem to have really found their feet over the last 12 months. Now that we're a few years clear of Slay The Spire's chokehold over the genre, deckbuilders are starting to come thick and fast in a variety of exciting mash-ups. This year alone, I've sunk a hefty number of hours into the deckbuilding tower defence 'em up ORX, got lost in the tabletop plots of Foretales, and later this week we'll see the launch of Marvel's Midnight Suns, the new card-based strategy RPG from XCOM makers Firaxis. It's a good time to be a fan of deckbuilders, is what I'm saying, and early next year the mythological exploits of Mahokenshi will be looking to carry the baton forward into 2023.

Has World Of Warcraft become too big for its own good?

Having returned to World Of Warcraft after many, many years away from Azeroth in our new Inventory Space video series, I'm taken aback by how disjointed the new player experience has become. Blizzard have streamlined the early game, sure, but in doing so they've made it almost impossible to pin down my sense of place in the world. As Blizzard carves out new space for new regions and races with each and every expansion, I wonder: has the game become too big? Or put another way: am I unable to grasp just how vast its become?

Evil West tech review: a smooth, blurry 60fps or a clean but stuttering 30fps - it's your choice

1 year 5 months ago

Evil West is a remarkably direct take on third-person action, a linear and propulsive combat game with no open-world diversions, no loot, no crafting, and no side quests. The combat system at its core is fast-paced, responsive, and fair, and the B-movie style plot is well-told through a series of high-quality cinematics.

Unfortunately though, the game has garnered controversy prior to release thanks to a pretty unexciting set of resolution options as reported by the game's publisher - a 4K30 quality mode is par for the course, but 1080p60 performance modes for PS5 and Series X have concerned many. Meanwhile, Xbox Series S gets a basic 1080p30 mode. The question is, if we look past the raw pixel counts, is there an attractive game underneath - and is performance really as straightforward as a simple 30fps/60fps split?

Before we tackle those issues, it's worth mentioning that Evil West does some things well in terms of assets, lighting, environmental design and rendering quality, with beautiful environments that stretch from sandy deserts to snowed-in summits and damp catacombs. This is very much an Unreal Engine 4 game - expect a heavy reliance on baked lighting within fairly static environments - but I love the way the visuals often come together.

Soccer Story Review – Not Exactly The Beautiful Game

1 year 5 months ago

Soccer Story on Nintendo Switch

With most of the globe enjoying the World Cup fever right now, it seems like the perfect opportunity for a game like Soccer Story to be unleashed by publisher No More Robots and studio Panic Barn. Whether you prefer to call it football or soccer, this is a popular sport that usually makes for fun gameplay out there on the pitch. Yet, despite the initial promise and the timing, Soccer Story leaves much to be desired even for an experience that is relatively short.

Following the event known as The Calamity, soccer as a sport is universally banned. The soccer-loving folks of this world, both animal and human, are not even allowed to speak of the sport, let alone play it. Matches are only possible under the iron fist of Soccer Inc and its corrupted leader, Bep Jatter, a less-than-subtle reference to the real-life figure that used to run FIFA, which I most certainly appreciated. It is under such circumstances that the player, either the sister or brother of twin characters, gets chosen by a magical soccer ball to save the day.

Thus begins a narrative-driven roleplaying experience that will test both your skills with the ball as well as your puzzle-solving acumen. Instead of just focusing on the actual sport, Soccer Story fills the world with plenty of other things to do – some good, some bad – though all designed to ensure that the magical ball is never too far away from your feet.

Street Fighter 6 Reveals Theme Music for E. Honda & Dhalsim

1 year 5 months ago

Today Capcom revealed a brand new video about its upcoming fighting game Street Fighter 6.

The video showcases the theme for E. Honda, titled “Kumadori” and follows another (which I missed, so I’m just adding it here) for Dhalsim, titled “The Great Sunlight.”

As usual, both themes are completely new and composed for the upcoming game. That being said, given the nature of both characters, who are strongly linked to the traditions of their respective countries, these sound perhaps more familiar than other theme tracks created for other characters.

Speaking of which, several more theme songs have been released over the past few months, including these for Chun-Li and new-ish character Luke (he was the last DLC for Street Fighter V), the theme for Ryu, the music created for Jamie, the theme made for Guile, the music composed for Juri and Kimberly, and the one for Ken. Some of them sound familiar, some a little less.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion “Launch” Trailer Hits Two Weeks Before Launch

1 year 5 months ago

Today Square Enix released the launch” trailer of the upcoming remaster/remake Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion.

Whether it’s one or the other, it really depends on how you interpret the word, and Square Enix recently claimed that it’s “more than a remaster” but does it really qualify as a remake? I’ll let you pick your own answer on that.

That being said, before wonder if you’ve got the release date wrong and rush to buy the game, the “launch trailer” thing is a bit of a misnomer. The game is still coming out in two weeks on Dec. 13, 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

When Activision started this trend of dropping launch trailers weeks before the actual launch, I didn’t think it’ll become the norm, but other companies are following the trend and Square Enix is one of these.

The trailer is a nice mix of animated cutscenes showcasing well-known characters and story beats, and plenty of gameplay, showing off the fresh coat of paint the game has received. As mentioned before, it does look more than a remaster, but not quite a remake.

While you can’t go and buy the game, digital preorders did go up today, and they will grant you the SOLDIER Materia Set as a bonus. It will make the Dark Fire, Dark Thunder, and Dark Blizzard materials available early in the game. If you aren’t familiar with them, they add Poison and Silence status effects to elemental damage.
