Konami Celebrates Castlevania’s 35th Anniversary With NFT Auction

2 years 3 months ago

Ubisoft and Square Enix are already hopping aboard the NFT train, and it looks like Konami’s doing the same as well. With the Castlevania series celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, the company has announced that they’ll be hosting an NFT auction in the coming days on OpenSea, which features various things like highlights clips from the series, stills, and music.

The auction will start on Jan. 12, 5 p.m. Eastern Time, and run till Jan. 14, 9 p.m. Eastern Time. Those who purchase the NFTs directly from Konami will have their names listed on their website, though users can, of course, resell it to other potential buyers.

If you want to take part in the auction, you’ll first need to make sure you have a crypto wallet ready (and make sure you can also receive NFTs with it), and have some ETH good to go. Initial prices on the NFTs range from 0.009 ETH to 0.012 ETH, which comes up to around 45 USD at the time of writing.

Amazon’s Fallout TV Adaptation Brings In Westworld’s Jonathan Nolan as Director & 2 New Showrunners

2 years 3 months ago

The Fallout TV series adaptation was initially announced quite a while ago, but it looks like things are finally starting to come together. Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had been tapped to work on the show as executive producers, and according to a new report from Variety, Nolan will also be taking on a directorial role at least for the first episode.

In addition to that, the project has also brought on two other showrunners: Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who worked on the Tomb Raider film reboot starring Alicia Vikander, and Graham Wagner, who has previously worked on projects like The Office and Silicon Valley.

While there’s still no concrete release window for the show just yet, it’s at least heartening to know that the project is still very much alive, especially with Todd Howard and Bethesda themselves getting involved as well. We’ll keep you updated as more info on the Fallout adaptation comes our way.

Wordle Creator Promises to Keep Game Free & Without Ads

2 years 3 months ago

Wordle is the latest browser-based word guessing game that’s gone viral over the past few weeks. The premise is simple: you have six tries to guess a five letter word. The game will let you know if you’ve got a letter correct, and whether it’s in the right spot. If you fumble all six attempts, you’ll need to wait till the next day before you can attempt another puzzle.

It’s a simple but fun concept, and it’s been going viral on social media. With all the success that Wordle is seeing, however, creator Josh Wardle stated in an interview with BBC that he plans on keeping the game free, and ad-free. There are no plans on turning it into a mobile app, and believes that keeping it browser-based would be the best course of action as he doesn’t want the game demanding too much of a player’s time.

“I am a bit suspicious of mobile apps that demand your attention and send you push notifications to get more of your attention,” he said.
“I like the idea of doing the opposite of that – what about a game that deliberately doesn’t want much of your attention? Wordle is very simple and you can play it in three minutes, and that is all you get.
“There are also no ads and I am not doing anything with your data, and that is also quite deliberate.”

BBC

Wordle is now available for free, and you can head over to the official website to start playing.

No Physical E3 in 2022 as ESA Considers Digital Plans

2 years 3 months ago

With the current concerns over the Omicron wave, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has made an early call in regards to E3 2022. As reported by GamesBeat, the annual gaming convention is once again forgoing the physical component, and going online instead. This will be the second year in a row that the show is digital following its cancellation back in 2020.

“Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding Covid-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022,” the organizers of E3, the ESA, told GamesBeat. “We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

While it seems like a good move by the ESA amid the rising concerns of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, it remains to be seen if a physical show will still be possible, or if there will be a show at all. Following the less than ideal state of affairs at last year’s show, E3 2022 may not be as important an industry event as before.

Publishers and developers can easily reach fans online by doing their own livestreams and events, and the shadows of Geoff Keighley, alongside The Game Awards and other more fan-friendly events like PAX, loom large over E3.

Fallout TV Series Begins Production in 2022, Westworld Co-Creator to Direct Pilot

2 years 3 months ago

After a year of silence, Amazon is opening the vault on some details for the upcoming Fallout TV series. In a new report, we've learned that the series based on the post-apocalyptic RPG is set to begin production later this year.

Deadline reported the production time and revealed Jonathan Nolan is set to direct the series premiere. Nolan is the co-creator of HBO's Westworld, which shares some similar dystopian themes with the world of Fallout.

Additionally, Captain Marvel Writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Portlandia and Silicon Valley's Graham Wagner will serve as the series showrunners. There is still no word on the cast or the plot for the Fallout show.

The Fallout TV series was first announced in 2020, with Nolan and Joy attached to the project. We also know that Fallout developers Bethesda Game Studios will be involved with the show, and series director Todd Howard is on board as an executive producer.

Fallout is an RPG video game franchise that takes place in the aftermath of a nuclear war. The franchise started as an isometric RPG series, but Bethesda transformed it into a first-person RPG juggernaut after acquiring the IP in 2007.

Fallout's unique take on Americana and Bethesda's bold first-person interpretation of the series has made it one of the most popular and beloved western RPG franchises.

Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates H Announced for Nintendo Switch

2 years 3 months ago

Today Compile Heart and Felistella announced Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates H for Nintendo Switch.

If the name is unfamiliar, Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates was originally launched in Japan for PlayStation Vita in 2016 and never localized.

This new release will launch in Japan on February 3, 2022. It’ll cost 4,800 yen including taxes, and it’ll be released only digitally on the Nintendo eShop.

The game tells the story of seven female pirates that go on an adventure in search of treasure.

This is basically an enhanced port of the PS Vita version including all the DLC out of the box. It’ll also come with additional elements to fit the Nintendo Switch like support for two analog sticks and HD rumble.

You can check out the trailer below.

At the moment, Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates H does not have a western release. Since the original was never localized, the chances of getting this port are likely not that high, but stranger things have happened.

New MMORPG Legend of Ymir Announced With Unreal Engine 5 & NFT Support

2 years 3 months ago

Korean developer WeMade Entertainment announced the development of its next-generation MMORPG titled Legend of Ymir.

If you’re unfamiliar with WeMade, it’s known for The Legend of Mir 2, The Legend of Mir 3, and Mir 4. In fact, Legend of Ymir is supposed to pick up the world view of the previous games and translate it into a Nordic setting.

The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, supporting its technological advances like Lumen and Nanite. It even uses Epic’s MetaHuman Creator for the characters.

We also hear that the game will support NFTs, which isn’t very surprising considering that Mir 4 already does, allowing players to tokenize their characters and sell and trade them as NFTs.

In the video below, we get to see an introduction by the developer and a tech demo showing a location of the game running un Unreal Engine 5. A character named Brynhildr is also showcased, and she certainly looks very detailed, especially for a MMORPG.

At the moment, no platforms have been announced, nor a release window, but the developers mention that they will “return soon with a well-made next-generation MMORPG” for the players.

In the meanwhile, you can enjoy the video and see what you think.

Just Add Water Founder Stewart Gilray Has Passed Away

2 years 3 months ago

2022 may only have just begun, but there is already enough unfortunate news going around. The latest comes via GamesIndustry.biz, which reported that established UK developer Stewart Gilray, who founded the Just Add Water studio in 2006, has passed away due to COVID-19. He was 51.

Just Add Water is perhaps most well known for transitioning the Oddworld series to the modern generation. The studio developed Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD for both PC and newer consoles, was responsible for the HD port of Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee, and also help co-develop the remake that was Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty. As for Gilray, he started in the early ’90s as a programmer on Amiga games like Darkmere and Powermonger.

He was admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 back on December 20, before passing on January 6. Fellow developers have since come out to share their thoughts about his passing.

“Stewart was one of the most loved people in the games industry,” indie developer Shahid Ahmad shared. “He made friends wherever he went and was an immensely talented, award-winning games developer.

“My friend Stewart Gilray was taken from us a few hours ago. Covid cut short his life and destroyed so much. He was the nicest bloke I knew, stubborn as hell, and always there for me. RIP Stew, you daft bugger,” said Q-Games CEO Dylan Cuthbert.

Stewart Gilray is survived by his wife Bec, along with their son and daughter.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus Overview Trailer Gives Us a Look at Open-World, Catching Mechanics & More

2 years 3 months ago

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the first major video game release of 2022, and it’s shaping up to be a pretty exciting one, considering that it’ll be quite the departure from the usual Pokemon formula that fans have become so accustomed to. Nintendo has just released a new overview trailer for the game, going over some of its core mechanics.

You can check out the video for yourself down below:

Aside from getting to choose between two factions at the start of the game, there’s a rather large world for players to explore as well. You’ll be able to encounter various Pokemon wandering around the world, and players can lock on to them and attempt to capture them with a Poke Ball.

Battles are also no longer turn-based in this one, and players will instead have to deal with real time combat and learn to dodge attacks from enemy Pokemon. We also get a glimpse of the various towns and NPCs players can interact with, and overall, this looks a lot more like a conventional modern open-world game in the Pokemon universe.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is set to be released for the Nintendo Switch on Jan. 28.

Hello! We're going to start the year off with a handful of pieces looking forward to 2022. Sometimes we'll just be thinking about things we've enjoyed and where they could lead. Have a lovely new year all!

Gaming is, and should be, for everyone. But that's not always been reflected in the characters we get to play as, be they created by developers or for ourselves.

Retro Shoot-‘Em-Up, Eschatos, Blazes its Way to Switch in the West on Jan. 13

2 years 3 months ago

Sometimes old-school arcade shoot-’em-ups like the classic, coin-guzzling experiences of yore can be a perfect fit for handheld systems like the Nintendo Switch. And earlier today, developer Qute Corporation confirmed that its horizontal-scrolling bullet-hell shooter, Eschatos, will be launching on Nintendo’s portable hybrid console on Jan. 13, 2022 in the west, with a planned PlayStation 4 release coming at some point in the future as well.

Originally released back in 2011 for Xbox 360, and later 2015 on PC, Eschatos is a bit of a rare gem, so this recent release date confirmation will likely be good news for all you shmup enthusiasts out there.

Taking place in an alternate future where the moon has been infected with a mysterious alien parasite known as the Purple Erosion, Eschatos throws you into the cockpit of an advanced spaceship and tasks you with eliminating the otherworldly threat.

Interestingly, when your boys are damaged in battle, their outfits will also be damaged, which is certainly a bit of interesting fanservice.

2 years 3 months ago

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for its upcoming sci-fi disaster pic, Moonfall, and it gives us much insight into what to expect when it launches into theaters on Feb. 4, 2022.

Helmed by veteran Hollywood movie director, Roland Emmerich – who also brought us beloved classics like 1992’s Universal Soldier, 1996’s Independence Day, and 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow – Moonfall will be the 20th feature in the auteur’s filmography and his first pic since 2019’s box office bomb, Midway.

Go ahead and check out the new trailer in full down below:

Starring Halle Berry (X-Men, Cloud Atlas), Patrick Wilson (Insidious, Aquaman), and John Bradley (Game of Thrones), Moonfall boasts some decent on-screen star power. Looking forward: Looking at established genres in new ways

2 years 3 months ago

Hello! We're going to start the year off with a handful of pieces looking forward to 2022. Sometimes we'll just be thinking about things we've enjoyed and where they could lead. Have a lovely new year all!

Video games always want to innovate. Developers both need to make something that stands out from a crowd, and want to engage us in new ways. 2021's games had outstanding examples of this - Unpacking made us rethink the puzzle genre and the stories contained in our possessions, Wildermyth showed us the power of procedural storytelling. 2022 is set to build on that, daring us to see the genres we like in different ways, and gaming will only be better for it.

Unsighted's timer-free Explorer mode is a totally valid way to play, say devs

2 years 3 months ago

Last September, Studio Pixel Punk released Unsighted, a top-down action RPG with a unique time limit on the life of its NPCs. It quickly garnered high praise from critics, including RPS' own Katharine Castle who named it one of the Best Games You Missed in 2021. To find out more about this indie gem, I got in touch with Studio Pixel Punk's pair of developers Fernanda Dias and Tiani Pixel to talk to them about its inspirations, turning off its timer, and the true meaning behind the game's name.

Despite layoffs, Tiny MMO Book Of Travels developers say plenty is on the way

2 years 3 months ago

Developers Might And Delight call Book Of Travels a TMORPG, a "tiny" MMO that's focused on fleeting interactions with other players, as opposed to lots of them. It’s a lovely looking adventure with a neat concept, so it was sad to hear that they'd been hit with layoffs after a difficult launch. However, some heartening news! More levels are on the way, as well as new character customisation tools. They also reaffirmed that despite being a much smaller team than before, they're committed to working on the game for the foreseeable.

E3 2022 won't happen in-person, organisers "excited about the possibilities of an online event"

2 years 3 months ago

Unsurprisingly, E3 will once again not happen as an in-person event this year, what with the whole global pandemic and all. The Entertainment Software Association, who organise E3, had hoped that the main event on the video games industry's marketing calendar would return properly this year, after skipping 2019 and going online in 2020, but nope. While they haven't yet confirmed whether or not they'll arrange an online E3 in its stead, they seem to be considering it. But even if not, the industry will doubltess manage to host its own advert-o-ramas without the E3 banner.

The 9 best jailbreaks in PC games

The justice system is stupid. You can go to jail for setting a plant on fire and putting it in your mouth. Shut up, the police. Be smart for once. Stop watching everyone through video cameras, you absolute creeps. What? Oh right, video games. Here's 9 of the best jailbreaks in PC games.

In truth, there are tons of games on the horizon that could easily sit on this list, and some of them are so close to release we can practically already see the pixels on our screens morphing into their lush, polygonal landscapes.
