Halo Infinite Single-Player Campaign Review

2 years 5 months ago

Halo Infinite’s single-player campaign, like a new generation of Master Chief’s MJOLNIR armor, powers up a 20-year-old series, by both returning to its roots and blazing new trails to build off of. By shifting to an open-world map while retaining the classic gameplay both on foot and in its iconic vehicles, it offers a level of freedom in combat not seen in any prior Halo game. There’s a lot to do in this expansive playground, and completing its never-dull-or-overwhelming list of activities earns more combat options and, ultimately, more fun. It doesn’t quite recapture the environmental variety or memorable story of the original trilogy, but it’s still a thrilling return to form for one of gaming’s most beloved series, and for Master Chief himself.

It’s Got a Nice Ring to it

The change from the traditional linear series of combat arenas to letting you freely explore the Zeta Halo ring where Infinite takes place marks the first time developer 343 Industries has broken from the blueprint that Bungie drew 20 years ago. All of that space proves to be a natural fit for what’s always been a sort of sandbox-style shooter at heart, where unexpected things happen. In Infinite, that same thing is true on a grander scale.

But you aren’t dropped straight onto the ring and set loose. Instead, the first couple of the 25 hours I spent completing it on Heroic difficulty take place indoors, and that intro works well as a way to get acquainted with Halo’s literal new gameplay hook, the Grappleshot, as well as the first of many delightfully challenging bosses.

Halo Infinite campaign review - Master Chief makes a leap of faith, and sticks the landing

2 years 5 months ago

It's a leap of faith, Halo Infinite. 343 took that old, reliable Halo formula, that magic golden triangle of combat its predecessor perfected, and dared to spread it across a sort of open world. It could have gone horribly wrong. Based on how the campaign looked just a year ago, I thought it had done. But I'm delighted to report 343 stuck the landing - like Master Chief slamming into the new and mysterious Halo ring upon which Infinite is set.

I thought Halo 5: Guardians did a lot right, but I get the feeling 343 has tried to leave it behind as it plots out Halo's future. Infinite is a spiritual reboot of the franchise, set chronologically after the controversial events of Halo 5, but taking inspiration from Bungie's seminal Halo: Combat Evolved not just in gameplay feel, but in tone, aesthetic and setting.

Halo Infinite campaign: the Digital Foundry analysis

2 years 5 months ago

Halo Infinite is a brilliant game. Honestly, against the odds, I feel that 343 has delivered one of the best first-person shooters of the last decade. It's a release that far exceeds the studio's previous work on Halo 4 and 5 in terms of design and in nailing the 'combat sandbox' experience. Worries I had about the transition to an open world have been assuaged and despite the seemingly difficult development period, I simply love the game. Is it perfect? Certainly not. There are numerous tech issues to address and fundamentally, I'm not sure this is the game that was originally envisaged based on reviewing early marketing assets. Regardless though, you've got to play it.

Let's tackle the thorny issue of the open world first. The gradual shift in the games business away from linear design to wide-open play areas crammed with busy work and filler content is becoming a real issue - franchise titles like Far Cry and Assassin's Creed exhibit these issues at their worst. Thankfully, Halo Infinite's approach to level design works brilliantly, just as the preview build suggested, taking the foundational building blocks of Halo 1's second mission and expanding it into something far larger in scope. It works and it retains much of what makes Halo special while introducing a level of freedom that feels like a natural extension. Think OG Crisis rather than latter-day Far Cry and hopefully you'll get some idea of what I mean.

Halo Infinite Review – Spider-Chief? Master-Man?

2 years 5 months ago

Halo Infinite on Xbox Series X

For the past four or five years, Microsoft has been attempting to close the gap with Sony when it comes to cinematic, AAA experiences. PlayStation has become synonymous with third-person, story-driven games that take players on epic journeys across frost-bitten mythological lands and immersive historical settings, while Microsoft’s studios have struggled to reach the same dizzying highs. Halo Infinite, however, marks a turning point in this narrative — not quite an all-conquering great, but certainly a sign that Microsoft has started to find its footing when it comes to evolving its iconic franchises with new, exciting design. Infinite’s incredible production value, which marries cutting-edge visuals to simply sublime gameplay, pushes forward a movement kickstarted by Gears 5 back in 2019.

Importantly for Halo fans, it’s a clear indication that 343 Industries has been listening to fan feedback following the divisive Halo 5 and, more recently that iffy gameplay trailer from last year. Combining another epic adventure with everyone’s favorite gruff-voiced Spartan, Master Chief, with a refined but still hectic multiplayer mode, Halo Infinite is a return to form and one you absolutely cannot miss out on.

Halo Infinite offers up two distinct experiences — one a lengthy adventure with Master Chief in its campaign, and the other a chaotic arena shooter multiplayer experience. For the sake of clarity, this review will be covering both under clear headings, and both parts of the game will play a part in determining the game’s final score at the bottom of this review.

Over the last couple of years, the Game Awards has become an annual highlight that honors the biggest games and hardest workers in the gaming industry. Sounds Like No Dragon Age 4 News At The Game Awards, BioWare Says As It Confirms Single-Player Focus

2 years 5 months ago

To mark Dragon Age Day on December 4, BioWare confirmed that the new Dragon Age game remains in development. However, the company said not to expect any news until 2022. This suggests there won't be any news about the long-awaited RPG during The Game Awards this Thursday, December 9.

"We want to let you all know that we're still hard at work on building the next single-player focused experience for Dragon Age," BioWare said in a blog post. "We're excited for next year when we can talk more about what we're working on."

Dragon Age 4 and The Game Awards have gone hand-in-hand in recent years, with BioWare debuting new teaser for the game back in 2018 and following it up with a new cinematic in 2020.

BioWare's specific wording is that the studio won't "talk" about the new Dragon Age game until 2022, which technically leaves open some wiggle room for the studio to show it before the year is out. But this is just speculation. In any event, we'll know soon, as The Game Awards is just a few days away now.

While fans might not get any new Dragon Age 4 news soon, BioWare has published two new Dragon Age-themed short stories--read them here. In addition to the next Dragon Age game, BioWare is developing a new Mass Effect title.

UK MP Renews Bid to Ban Console Scalping Bots

2 years 5 months ago

After a failed bid earlier this year, a UK MP is once again bringing a bill to tackle scalping bots, which have caused issues with supplies of next-gen consoles, graphics cards, and other high-demand goods.

UK Member of Parliament Douglas Chapman has written to the government's Secretary of State for Digital, Media, Culture, and Sport in the hope to renew interest in legislation that would look to tackle automated scalping bots that have plagued consumers and inflated prices.

Chapman, who is currently the acting MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, is hoping to increase pressure on the government to act on the issue by raising a new motion on the matter after previously bringing forward a bill earlier this year.

“This time last year it was brought to my attention by constituents that scalpers were using automated bots to bulk buy goods for resale leaving consumers with either no option but to purchase these items at hugely inflated prices or go without, a sorry state of affairs at any time, never mind in the run-up to Christmas," explained Chapman in a press release.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Has Some Hidden Modes on PC

2 years 5 months ago

Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode has some hidden modes on PC, which seem only to be accessible if you boot up the game in offline mode.

As spotted by Reddit user u/WickedSoldier991, Halo Infinite appears to include 14 additional multiplayer game modes as yet unavailable in the main online game, including unreleased Arena, Fiesta, Ranked and Tactical mode.

Players aren't typically able to access the hidden modes unless they launch the game in offline mode. However, as WickedSoldier991 points out that, once discovered, each of the modes can then be saved so that you can access them yourself when online at a later point.

As standard, Infinite's multiplayer mode currently has 17 different playable modes including the likes of Slayer, Oddball, and Capture the Flag. As well as bringing that total up to 31 different multiplayer picks, the secret additional modes include some brand new ways to play as well.

As per PC Gamer, one of the most interesting modes to come from the hidden list is Attrition. In the new mode, players will find that each team is given a limited number of respawns, while additional features such as revives and a Battle Royale Style closing circle are also said to be present. A full list of the hidden modes can be found below:

Final Fantasy 14 Director Apologises for Endwalker Login Problems, Offers Free Play Time

2 years 5 months ago

Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida has apologized to players regarding login problems that have featured in the game since the early access launch of Endwalker. As compensation, paying players will receive 7 days of free play time.

In a post published on the FF14 website, Yoshida delved further into the issues that have contributed to players' frustrations over the weekend.

"Currently, all Worlds across all regions have been hitting the login cap for extremely long periods of time, and the progression of login queues is being slowed dramatically," explained Yoshida in the post.

"Across the FFXIV service as a whole, the number of simultaneous logins has reached the hardware limit, and as a result, logging in has required an extremely long time, especially during 'peak hours' when we tend to see increased player activity. For this, I am truly sorry."

Issues began cropping up in the game following the early access release of Endwalker last week. A number of players attempting to access Endwalker have been thwarted by various errors codes including the infamous error 2002, as well as errors 4004, 5003, and 5006. In the post, Yoshida spoke further about the causes of these errors before explaining that the team is working hard to address the congestion situation.
