EWS podcast episode 158: the best spaceships special

2 years 7 months ago

In honour of the new DLC for Outer Wilds, this week on The Electronic Wireless Show Podcast we're discussing our favourite spaceships in games. In the process, while we do discuss some games, there is quite a lot of chat about the origin of the spaceship as 'space-house' - the hub area where all your pals hang out - both in games and in wider space media. Also, Nate has a great Cavern Of Lies that is Star Wars themed, and does indeed give us a terrible fright.

Digressions this week are a big discussion on Matthew's tooth situation, and a semi-argument about what planetary circumstances would be enough for me to agree to go into space (e.g. planet covered in really nice soup). Also: is Elon Musk's divorce the origin story for Warhammer 40k?

Moonglow Bay Interview: Developers Talk Town Development, Side Content & Working with Xbox

2 years 7 months ago

Moonglow Bay is a relaxing, slice-of-life fishing RPG due to release on Xbox consoles and PC in just a couple of week’s time. Ahead of the game’s official release on Oct. 26, I was lucky enough to sit down and talk with creative director Zach Soares and art director Lu Nascimento to get a better idea of what players can expect from life in Moonglow Bay, and the depths of the deep blue sea off this coastal town.

In the interview, we cover their inspirations within the slice-of-life sim genre, an initially ‘darker take’ for Moonglow Bay, how relationships work with the characters, working with Microsoft, and making the decision to launch on Xbox Game Pass, as well as achievements and much more.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank both Zach and Lu once more for taking the time out of their busy schedules to share so much about the creative process behind Moonglow Bay, in what was a truly fascinating conversation. You can read it in full below.

Note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Twinfinite: So first off, I just wanted to say, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedules to sit down and talk with us today about Moonglow Bay. I, and the rest of the team have been waiting with, pardon the pun, bated breath to check it out for ourselves next month. So to start us off, could you just give us a quick introduction of who you are and what your roles are within the development of Moonglow Bay.

Zach: Yes, I’m Zach. I’m the Creative Director, that’s my primary role but I also do all the voxel art for the game.

Lu: I’m Lu, I’m the Art Director and do everything to do with the effects, the UI, everything. And thank you for having us.

How Well Do You Remember Super Mario 64? Take This Trivia Quiz To Find Out

2 years 7 months ago

Super Mario 64 turns 25 years old this year, which is pretty hard to believe that so much time has gone by since its release. This iconic game was released alongside the Nintendo 64 in 1996, marking the beginning of Mario’s adventures on a three-dimensional plane.

The game has an incredible legacy; nearly every 3D platformer to this day has taken some sort of inspiration from this Mario adventure. It was truly a trailblazer for the genre, and it is still an absolute blast to play nowadays.

More than two decades later, we’re still celebrating our love for the game. In fact, just last year, it was included in the legacy collection Super Mario 3D All-Stars on the Switch for the franchise’s 35th anniversary. Additionally, later this year, it’ll be added to the Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo 64 service. Both old fans and new fans alike can continue to enjoy this game.

Whether you played it back in the day when it was released or more recently, you surely know how impactful it was on gaming history. We want to see how much you remember about the game. Can you answer each of these questions about Super Mario 64 correctly? Let’s find out.

Diablo 2: Resurrected Review – For the Faithful

2 years 7 months ago

Diablo 2 Resurrected on PC

Diablo 2: Resurrected is a remaster simultaneously complex, and also incredibly simple. Visually, it’s a night and day difference between its predecessor, even on the Switch. But from a gameplay perspective, it is incredibly faithful, almost to a fault. Very little has been changed from the original release which will likely be music to the ears of the most hardcore Diablo 2 fans, resistant to change. In that sense, it’s a very “simple” upgrade. However, that decision not to use this opportunity to spruce things up may end up being a thorn at the side of newcomers and fans without rose-tinted glasses.

Let’s talk about what Diablo 2: Resurrected gets right first. Visually Diablo 2: Resurrected is a triumph. It takes a very old game that looks, let’s face it, like ass by today’s standards, and turns it into something charming and wonderful to behold. By charming and wonderful, I of course mean gory, gothic, and dark with a new level of detail that was not possible in the original game. Fans wouldn’t have it any other way in that regard.

Gameplay-wise, very little has changed because very little needed to change. Diablo 2 is still an all-time great game and that is still the case in Resurrected.

All of the game’s classes are incredibly distinct from each other and each has a multitude of different play styles you can elect to spec into. There are Trap Assassins, Elementalist Assassins, Bow Amazons, Javasons, Werewolf Druids, Werebear Druids, Hammerdins, Whirlwind Barbs, Summoner Necros, and Bone Necros, Ice, Fire, and Thunder Sorceresses, I could go on and on.

Moonglow Bay Could Have Been a ‘Darker’ Game Inspired by Monster Hunter

2 years 7 months ago

Moonglow Bay Creative Director Zach Soares described how the slice-of-life fishing sim could have been a much darker game, in a recent interview with Twinfinite.

Having been asked to elaborate on previous comments made during an interview with Pure Xbox, Soares shared a few extra details on how the game, particularly its fishing mechanic, could have given the game a darker town than its light-hearted, tranquil take that it’s adopted for its final release.

Oh man. I’m not able to go too deep into it, but for example, one of the initial ideas was kind of building around the whole fishing encounter itself, and it was darker in that it was very much more of a fight with the fish, including the monsters,” Soares noted.

I think one of the inspirations at that point was leaning towards Monster Hunter. But this is where it was interesting because it actually worked against the story of the game.”

Moonglow Bay is a game focused on helping to revitalize a tranquil fishing town through fishing and interacting with the locals. Players are also tasked with cleaning up trash out at sea to help clean the pollution in the water, which reduces their chances of snagging litter when casting out their line. It was this, Soares highlighted, as not working with the ‘darker’ initial idea for the game.

When the story was a lot more wholesome and stuff like that, we were just like it’ll feel really unhinged if you’re going through like ‘this town is so nice and friendly’ and you’re just destroying this last form of wildlife in the oceans. So we kind of decided, let’s stick with preservation.

Moonglow Bay Delayed to Late October; New Trailer Tides Players Over For Now

2 years 7 months ago

Developer Bunnyhug Games has today announced that Moonglow Bay has been delayed from its Oct. 7 release date, and will now come to PC, Xbox consoles, and Xbox Game Pass on Oct. 26.

The news comes via a press release, as well as a tweet from the developer’s Twitter account (included below). The developers cited “some pesky bugs which have made getting a clean release build difficulty” as the reason for the 19-day delay.

Bunnyhug Games did offer some positive news in that Moonglow Bay is now in “a good place and in the final stage of development,” but the extra time is needed to “pass the final hurdles, so to ensure all is right as rain.”

Ex-Tango Gameworks Developer Ikumi Nakamura is Working on Gungrave Sequel

2 years 7 months ago

During Tokyo Game Show 2021, Gungrave G.O.R.E publisher Koch Media showcased a new gameplay video, and announced that Ikumi Nakamura is involved in the game’s development.

While the first half of the trailer is dedicated to cinematic scenes from the Gungrave sequel, the second half shows the game in action, including scenes showing combat with guns and swordplay.

Gungrave G.O.R.E is the latest title in the “Grave” series of 3D action games. The title centers around Grave, a former mafia member who died once and has returned after being resurrected through a surgical procedure. He acquired a stronger body in exchange for losing his memories and as a result can perform superhuman feats.

In the trailer, Grave was seen unleashing stylish attacks against large numbers of enemies. According to the trailer, Grave can attack using a combination of guns and swords, and by kicking enemies.

Publisher Koch Media announced that Ikumi Nakamura, who previously worked on The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo at Tango Gameworks, is involved in the development. Nakamura’s role on Gungrave G.O.R.E was not specified, but it sounds like more information will follow.

“This Gungrave G.O.R.E collaboration has been a valuable experience for me,” Nakamura said. “I played the original Gungrave, so this has brought back lots of precious memories. You can expect more updates and other news from now on!”

Gungrave G.O.R.E is being developed by Iggymob for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Bluepoint's Demon's Souls Remake Has Sold More Than 1 Million Copies

2 years 7 months ago

In the wake of Sony Interactive Entertainment's purchase of Bluepoint Games — the studio behind highly-regarded remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus — the console holder has confirmed that Demon's Souls has sold more than one million copies since its 2020 debut on PlayStation 5.

The news was buried in the official press release confirming the acquisition, sandwiched between praise for Bluepoint's "console-defining visuals and gameplay" and the list of games in its portfolio. PlayStation confirmed that Demon's Souls has sold 1.4 million copies as of September 19.

These numbers make it a comparatively modest success next to Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has sold some 6.5 million copies. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart likewise topped a million sales in relatively short order.

Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake released alongside the PlayStation 5, where it was hailed as one of the handful of truly "next-gen" releases available that fall. Our review called it "breathtakingly gorgeous," noting that it plays "significantly better" than it did on PS3.

PlayStation Officially Acquires Bluepoint Games, Next Game Planned to Be an Original, Not a Remake

2 years 7 months ago

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced yet another studio acquisition - Bluepoint Games, the developers of the Shadow of the Colossus remake on PS4, and, most recently, the PS5 remake of Demon's Souls.

Bluepoint and PlayStation have worked closely together for years, but the news comes after the studio's latest successful release, as Sony confirmed Demon's Souls has sold more than 1.4 million copies since release. IGN spoke with PlayStation Studios Head Hermen Hulst and Bluepoint President Marco Thrush to learn more about the acquisition, PlayStation's overall studio strategy, and about how, thoughBluepoint is steeped in PlayStation remaster and remake expertise, it wants to explore original ideas.

Bluepoint Wants to Make Original Games

Demon's Souls was only released last November, and while Bluepoint isn't officially announcing its next game, Thrush explained that the studio is aiming to work on original content going forward. No exact details about what the "original content" Bluepoint is working on will be, so it remains unclear if it is a new game that is part of an existing IP, or something new entirely.

"Our next project, we're working on original content right now. We can't talk about what that is, but that's the next step in the evolution for us," Thrush said, noting that, even with remakes like Shadow and Souls, the studio was already partially creating original content. He explained how, really, the growth of the studio, both in the literal number of employees as well as types of projects, naturally leads to this next step, especially given the team's pedigree.

Capcom's Monster Hunter Showcase: Everything Announced - Tokyo Game Show 2021

2 years 7 months ago

Capcom knows you love to hunt monsters so the company brought almost nothing but Monster Hunter news to Tokyo Game Show 2021. In a video presentation, series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and Monster Hunter Rise director Yasunori Ichinose outlined a few upcoming additions coming to the game, and then offered a glimpse behind the scenes of the four-year development process.

Here's everything the show covered in one place:

Sunbreak's "Massive Expansion" Gets New Details

Sunbreak expansion director Yoshitake Suzuki joined the video to talk about what he's been working on. Scheduled to arrive next summer, Tsujimoto said Sunbreak is a "massive expansion" of the base game which includes "new locales, monsters, gameplay, and a new quest rank: Master Rank." Suzuki explained that Sunbreak will take place in a new base of operations far from Kamura Village, and the "flagship monster" of this game is the elder dragon Malzeno. He also added that Shogun Ceanataur from Monster Hunter 2, a crab-like beast with a hard shell and pincers, would be returning in Sunbreak.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition Rated by South Korean Games Rating Board

2 years 7 months ago

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition - which one could assume would contain remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas - has been rated by Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee.

This rating was spotted by those like @Nibellion on Twitter, and it appears to confirm Kotaku's report from August 2021 that said these remasters - all of which would be remastered in Unreal Engine - are on their way to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, Stadia, mobile devices, and even the Nintendo Switch.

Kotaku noted that these games were in their "final stages of development" and would use a mix of "new and old graphics." It was also said that the COVID-19 pandemic had shifted Rockstar's plans to release this collection, and that it originally planned on releasing them as a "thank you gift" for those who purchased the next-gen ports of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.

Now, with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version of GTA V and GTA Online delayed to March 2022, Rockstar may be getting ready to release them a bit sooner. It's important to note that things could change and this doesn't mean this collection's release is imminent, but it should give some hope to those who would love to play these classic GTA games with some modern upgrades.

Here's The Bullet-Riddled First Look At Gungrave G.O.R.E.'s Gameplay

2 years 7 months ago

As Tokyo Game Show takes off today, publisher Prime Matter pulled the curtain back on the first gameplay footage for Gungrave G.O.R.E. The sequel to the dormant Gungrave franchise has been in the works for some time, and if today’s video is any indication, its bloody brand of over-the-top action seems to be coming along quite nicely.

The trailer below provides an extended look at the previously shown cinematic trailer, revealing new scenes before transitioning into footage of anti-hero Grave doing what he does best. That is, mowing down undead targets using his twin pistols and weaponized transforming coffin. Gungrave G.O.R.E. looks absurdly frenetic, which likely couldn’t make fans happier.

The Touryst is the first 8K 60fps game for PS5

2 years 7 months ago

Shin'en Multimedia's brilliant game - The Touryst - is now available for PS4 and PS5 consoles and it is now confirmed as the very first native 8K rendered game on the new generation of consoles, running beautifully at 60 frames per second no less. That's right: according to our discussions with the developer, the game internally renders at 7680x4320 - no temporal super-sampling, no reprojection, no checkerboarding, no AI upscaling. It's full-on 4320p.

Of course, there's a slight problem here in that PlayStation 5 does not support 8K output via HDMI 2.1, despite proudly displaying an 8K logo on the box. In this case, Shin'en is using the extreme resolution for super-sampling anti-aliasing: essentially, every pixel on your 4K screen is downsampled from four pixels for pristine image quality. As for what kind of difference this makes to the overall presentation, Shin'en has you covered there too. You can actually drop back down to native 4K in the options menu - just disable anti-aliasing. Shin'en tells us that when and if the platform holder makes good on the PS5 packaging's 8K promises (VRR first please, Sony), a simple patch should allow the game to output the 4320p framebuffer directly for a 1:1 pixel match on an 8K display.
