Best New World builds: the best character builds for PvP and PvE

2 years 7 months ago

What are the best character builds in New World? Unlike many MMOs of a similar type, New World doesn't have character classes. Instead, you build your character over time by allocating points into their Attributes and Weapon Masteries. This gives you the opportunity to experiment with gameplay a little before committing to a play style, allowing you to find the build that works best for you.

New World will offer free server transfers to help with queues

2 years 7 months ago

New World has had quite the start to life, becoming the most popular game on Steam last night. Unfortunately, the MMORPG's popularity has caused an awful lot of queuing, with players having to wait hours to get their preferred servers. Amazon Games have announced a sort of workaround for that, though. Over the next two weeks, if you get your character started on a lower player count server, the devs will let you transfer them for free to the server you want to settle down in.

New World: Amazon's Prohibitively Popular MMO Is Trying to Reduce Queue Time Across the Globe

2 years 7 months ago

New World was absolutely huge at launch yesterday, to the point where it became very hard to actually play the game. Thankfully Amazon Games has been working on lowering queue time across the globe to help get new players into the MMO.

The developer has been updating the New World forums throughout its first day of release. So far, the EU Central, North America West, North America East and Australia servers have had additional worlds added, with the aim of offering more of an even spread of players. With the team promising to monitor world congestion, you can likely expect more expansions as time goes on.

If you're looking to jump in while the hype is hot, a new fan-run website, New World Status aims to offer live data for player counts across the world, including numbers of people waiting in the queue for any given in-game world, and an estimated average wait time.

It's quite possible that even Amazon was taken by surprise with New World's launch day popularity. It very quickly became Steam's most-played game of the year, reaching over 700,000 concurrent players, smashing Valheim's huge record from earlier in 2021.

Tunic isn't a Soulslike, says dev, but it won't go easy on you

2 years 7 months ago

At first glance, the upcoming action-adventure game Tunic looks remarkably similar to The Legend Of Zelda. Its protagonist is a cute little dude (well, a fox, in this case) with a sword and shield and similar taste in green adventure-wear, and they get to run around all sorts of lush forests, bright temples and more. But upon playing the game, people have already discovered that it's a fair bit tougher than it looks. More Dark Souls, than Zelda, perhaps.

Just because Tunic isn't dark and gloomy doesn't mean it can't offer its fair share of challenges, so I spoke to Tunic creator Andrew Shouldice to find out how he's managing expectations, as well as tackling difficulty and accessibility. We also talked about the joy of exploring and uncovering secrets, but we'll check behind that waterfall in a bit.

Horizon Forbidden West Developer Is Hiring For MMO

2 years 7 months ago

Horizon II: Forbidden West

Information about Horizon Forbidden West is relatively scarce – and for good reason. The game is still a ways off, but we’ve been fortunate enough to see extensive gameplay footage and learn about Aloy’s visual/narrative evolution throughout the two games. However, according to a recent job posting, developer Guerrilla Games might be looking to branch out into more multiplayer-focused experiences. Whether this has anything to do with the Horizon franchise or a new IP scheduled for release in the very distant future remains to be seen. In any case, the team is looking to hire MMO experts.

New World: the best settings to improve performance

2 years 7 months ago

Even though you can’t play as Jeff Bezos, Amazon Game Studios’ MMO New World is proving popular. So popular, in fact, that some players are apparently willing to queue for hours if it means joining their preferred server. If you find yourself waiting to get to the front of the line, why not kill time efficiently by reading this guide to New World’s best settings? Despite some light-looking system requirements, New World can hammer your hardware in certain areas, and even if you own one of the best graphics cards it’s worth knowing which settings to tone down in exchange for those morish frames per second.

Colt's squishy vulnerability is stopping me from enjoying Deathloop's action

2 years 7 months ago

Let's try action. Let's try action. Let's try action. This is the Deathloop I'm in at the moment, but I'm slowly beginning to think it's worth breaking the cycle and taking the stealthy approach as often as I can. I'm confused, you see. In many of the game's pre-release teasers, we saw Colt bursting into action. Stealth? No no, this is more of an FPS. The music flares, enemies die, it is carnage.

But when I actually give action a go in the game, I'm mostly left dead in seconds. Either that, or I meekly duck behind some cover and regret not trying the stealthy approach. And the problem is that sometimes I have no option but to go all guns blazing, and I think, "Colt isn't built for this. He's only a squishy lad." I just think he's a stealth character being forced to break cover when he's clearly uncomfortable doing so.

Spider-Man 2 Will Be Darker Than Insomniac's Last Two Spidey Games

2 years 7 months ago

Marvel has said that Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 will present fans with a "darker" follow-up to its previous two installments, comparing the game's tone to The Empire Strikes Back.

Speaking on a recent episode of the This Week in Marvel podcast, Creative Vice President of Marvel Entertainment Bill Rosemann gave fans a brief insight into what they can expect from Spider-Man 2.

"If the first Spider-Man game was Star Wars, Spider-Man 2 is kind of our Empire," Rosemann said. "It gets a little darker." Insomniac's first Spidey adventure did well to set fans up with the studio's take on Peter Parker by exploring elements of the character's superhero secret identity and relationships without leaning too far too early into some of Spidey's grittier storylines.

Similarly, the studio's release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales gave fans a story exploring a teenage Miles establishing himself and finding his rhythm as a superhero while Peter Parker was out of the picture taking annual leave.

That's not to say that neither character faces darker elements within their respective storylines, but there's definitely room for Insomniac to explore further now that both characters have established themselves. From the teaser trailer shown off during Insomniac's reveal of Spider-Man 2 at this year's PlayStation Showcase, we know that the sequel will see Peter and Miles teaming up to take on notorious symbiote villain, Venom.
