The Life And Career Of Ikumi Nakamura

2 years 7 months ago

Ikumi Nakamura’s mother didn’t want her to work for Capcom. As she tells it, early in life, Nakamura saw a feature on the making of Resident Evil. In it, the game’s creators gather at a bar to drink and talk about the development. Nakamura’s mind was made up. She wanted to be a game developer. She wanted to work with the people she saw on screen. Nakamura’s mom was less impressed.

“I saw it, and I told my Mom, ‘Oh my God, I want to work with them,’” Nakamura tells Game Informer via translator. “And my Mom’s like, ‘No, don’t work with them. They’re just drunk, old men. Don’t do that!’”

Nakamura didn’t take her mother’s warning to heart.

Nakamura’s first job in the industry was at Capcom; she was an artist for its internal team, Clover Studios. That job meant a lot to her, personally. Aside from being a fan, Capcom’s games were something Nakamura bonded over with her father, which offered a personal connection to the work.

During and since, Nakamura’s had a hand in developing several cult-favorite video games, including Ōkami, Bayonetta, and The Evil Within series, working for Platinum Games and Tango Gameworks after Capcom. But for the majority of her career, she was relatively unknown within, and certainly outside, the game industry. That is until E3 2019, when her presentation for Ghostwire: Tokyo thrust her into video game stardom – thanks in no small part to her outgoing and offbeat personality. Nakamura has since become a social media favorite, befriending prominent game developers such as Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog.

Watch 27 Minutes Of NHL 22 Gameplay To See The Improvements In Action

2 years 7 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Opening day for the NHL is just around the corner, and hot on its heels is the October 15 release date for NHL 22, which provides the best way to put yourself into the on-ice action. Today, EA Vancouver gave us an extensive look (27 minutes to be exact!) at what to expect from the gameplay in this year's edition, which adds X-Factors and new abilities such as being able to reverse a hit or brace for it.

The footage, which you can watch above, breaks down the changes to passing/receptions, how the Frostbite Engine enhances the gameplay, and the impact of the new stick physics. Outside of the beta, this is the most substantial look we've had at the game in action, so it's a good watch if you want to see how the new features look on the ice and hear explanations from the developers about their vision for this year.

The NHL 22 blog also further highlights how the gameplay is different this year, which includes strength and body positioning playing a bigger factor in puck possession alongside an all-new deflection system that offers more variety in the ways you can trick the goaltender, from subtle stick flicks to more skillful moves that pivot and pull a puck back against the grain.

RFM is a retro-future tactical roguelite with a demo this weekend

2 years 7 months ago

This stylish retro-future strategy game has you diving into real-time tactical battles as an inter-dimensional mercenary. It's quite a looker, with a very chill, retro synth soundtrack to match. Don't let that get you too relaxed though, it looks like these battles may get a bit hectic as you dive deeper. RFM is looking to launch sometime next year, but you'll also be able to take it for a spin in the upcoming Steam Next Fest that kicks off this Friday.

Correction: you can be Jeff Bezos in New World, sort of

2 years 7 months ago

As is ever the case in starting a new MMO, picking a character name can be tough. Not least because naming things is hard, but also because some words are on the no-no list. In Amazon's MMO New World, that includes most versions of attempting to name your character after Amazon's founder. As Graham found out yesterday, you can't be Jeff Bezos in New World. Well, not exactly, anyway. You can be close to Jeff Bezos, depending on how far you're willing to stretch his name. At least one player—though I suspect there are hundreds more—has successfully bent the rules and landed in Aeternum as a knockoff Jeff.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Review

2 years 5 months ago

First impressions are key, and since six years have passed since Halo 5: Guardians, for a lot of people (like myself) Halo Infinite will be the first Halo multiplayer experience they’ve played at launch – especially since Infinite’s multiplayer is free to play and accessible to everyone with an Xbox or PC. And what a launch it’s been! With its tight 4v4 matches and more chaotic 12v12 Big Team Battle on expertly designed maps, Infinite revives and reinvigorates the glorious sci-fi action that once made Halo king among multiplayer FPS games. Riding high on that thrill, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer has dash-slid into the first-person shooter scene and meleed the competition off the map.

Halo Infinite looks absolutely gorgeous. The environments within each map are so detailed and pretty that I’m now looking forward to the campaign even more. The lighting, settings, and overall look of Infinite bring the futuristic world of Halo to modern-day glory. On PC, it can run at 144Hz easily (and there’s a 120Hz mode on Xbox Series X), and the most severe technical issue I’ve seen has been some server desync and stutters every so often. It wasn’t enough to really mess things up but it was noticeable and made some fights slightly harder than they should have been. I’ve only experienced one crash in my 20 hours of playtime, so my experience has been pretty steady.

Twitch officially unveils new verification tools to tackle hate raiding

2 years 7 months ago

Following reports earlier this week, Twitch has officially unveiled a new suite of verification-based tools intended to help combat the increasingly prevalent phenomenon of hate raiding.

Twitch's controversial raid feature was originally designed to be an easy way for streamers to share audiences by enabling them to redirect all viewers currently watching their broadcast to a target channel. Unfortunately, malicious users quickly began exploiting the feature, setting up dummy accounts and bots to flood the chats of often marginalised streamers and subject them to doxing, harassment, and attack.

Bungie Removes Controversial Employee Contract Clause As It Promises to Improve Workplace Diversity

2 years 7 months ago

Bungie has published a blog from the company’s CEO Pete Parsons outlining steps the Destiny 2 developer is taking to improve Diversity & Inclusion at the workplace, including removing a controversial employee contract clause.

In a lengthy blog post, Parsons discussed how Bungie has reacted to recent months where companies like Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft grapple with the fallout of gender discrimination and sexual harassment at the workplace.

As part of Bungie’s promise to continue improving its workplace culture, Parsons announced that it is “eliminating the mandatory arbitration clause” in all the employee agreements.

Mandatory arbitration is an agreement where employees settle disputes with their employers privately instead of in the court system. Forced arbitration clauses prevent employees from suing employers through the legal system and can keep details of their grievances from becoming public.

The forced arbitration clause is in place at some of the biggest studios and has been a flashpoint in recent years as companies like Ubisoft, Riot, and Activision Blizzard face unrest over workplace culture.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Review

2 years 7 months ago

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is big. It is a massive, life-dominating endeavor likely to take weeks of playing before completion, dominating your thoughts and plans during that time. Sometimes that size means spending hours on frustrating time as an army manager, but the role-playing, exploring, and especially combat make it very much worth it. Wrath of the Righteous leaves a memorable mark on the throwback-style RPG genre, with strong companion personality and turn-based combat.

The pedigree of Wrath of the Righteous is big as well, adapting another of the Pathfinder tabletop game’s epic “Adventure Paths” and honing the concepts of 2018’s similarly large Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Kingmaker's generic fantasy kingdom is replaced here by the specific story of a crusade against a demon army on the border of the world and the Abyss. Sometimes this is a little off-putting, in that it's easy to miss fighting ogres and goblins in a fantasy game when you’re neck-deep in nabasu and dretch (whatever those are). But the decision to give Wrath of the Righteous a specific focus like this mostly pays off, especially when it allows for the party's companions to have stronger personalities. I even found myself having strong enough feelings about my party members’ behaviors that I ended up killing or removing some of them from the group at multiple different points, which I've never done in an RPG before the endgame.

Ikumi Nakamura, Who Found Fame With Ghostwire Tokyo, Remembers Her Rocky Beginnings At Capcom

2 years 7 months ago

Ikumi Nakamura is gearing up her independent studio, and a new profile charts her career and details the highs and lows leading to this exciting new chapter.

In a new profile in Game Informer, Nakamura shared her history in game development starting with her first job at Capcom’s Clover, a beloved sub-division known for its work on Okami and Viewtiful Joe.

While it was at Clover that Nakamura met future co-workers, Hideki Kamiya and Shinji Mikami, Nakamura said her time at Clover and Capcom was difficult.

She says Capcom viewed Clover as “just the group of weirdos” and a “totally separate entity.” Nakamura cited the Wii-port of Okami which left out the name of Clover and its developers in the credits, something Capcom says was due to a rights issue.

“I’m sure something happened — politics,” Nakamura said. Additionally, she describes Capcom as being “old-school” with managers who yelled at employees and kicked office furniture. Behaviour she says wouldn’t be allowed in modern workplaces.

Nakamura went on to work at Platinum on games like Bayonetta and the canceled Scalebound before joining Mikami at Tango Gameworks. She was creative director on the upcoming title Ghostwire: Tokyo.

The full profile reveals how deep Nakamura’s love of horror is, a passion she shared with her father. And while working with Mikami on a horror game is an extension of that passion, she also revealed that the Resident Evil director wanted to create new games and not keep doing the same thing, “But people in the world wanted him to create — expected him to create survival horror.”

Dread Hunger Is a PvP Adventure That Will Put Your Friendships to the Test

2 years 7 months ago

Whether I was plotting the deaths of my fellow crewmates via occult magic or killing my ally out of fear that they’d betray me, Dread Hunger never allowed me to feel at ease – but in a good way. As I worked with my teammates to navigate an explorer’s ship past icebergs and through chilling blizzards, the threat of betrayal from within was omnipresent, and the temptation to keep checking over my shoulder was at odds with accomplishing the tasks set before me. As an evil Thrall working against the group, being outnumbered and the fear of being found out forced me to be smart with when and where to act against the group. Dread Hunger was constantly challenging me to be more clever no matter which side I was on, and it had me nervously laughing, screaming, and having an absolute blast in every match.

Dread Hunger is a social deception game first, but it’s also an adventure game with survival and crafting mechanics, exploration, and combat – and those components can come into conflict with social deception. Combat in particular can be problematic, because if you give a player a gun they’re going to want to shoot it at someone. If left unchecked, things can quickly spiral into a free-for-all PvP mode with none of the substance you’d want in a social deception game, but the developers are working to make those kinds of easy answers less feasible in their upcoming update.

Falling in love with Solomon's Key

For years whenever I've been hunting around through books about old games and going over compilation discs, I've seen the words "Solomon's Key" and never been tempted. Intrigued, but not intrigued enough. It's an old game, right, maybe a bit puzzley? Ported a lot.

That ended yesterday. I was looking through the NES games on Switch for something to play, and there was Solomon's Key. After all this time, what is this game? Is it playable at all? A relic? Will it make me understand the lineage of another game a little better? I didn't know what to expect, but I'll tell you what actually happened: I fell in love.

A recent report regarding the rumored 4K Nintendo Switch model is false, according to Nintendo. Not long after a Bloomberg story that claimed 11 developers, including Zynga, had access to development tools to make 4K Switch games, Nintendo shot down the rumors in a statement.

"A news report on Sept. 30, 2021(JST) falsely claims that Nintendo is supplying tools to drive game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support," Nintendo said. "To ensure correct understanding among our investors and customers, we want to clarify that this report is not true.

"We also want to restate that, as we announced in July, we have no plans for any new model other than Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, which will launch on October 8, 2021," the company added.
