The best game you missed in August 2020: Milky Way Prince – The Vampire Star

3 years 4 months ago

A screenshot from Milky Way Prince showing a young man sat cross legged in front of a large window. Everything is red tinged - behind him are the tops of some pinky red palm trees, and a red apartment block. The young man looks like he has been gagged by a butterfly.

Playing Milky Way Prince made me think about people I would rather forget, and memories that will never quite stop hurting. You know, the ones about the intense, dysfunctional relationships you sometimes end up in when you’re stupid and young.

It’s a game that feels young at its core – the first commercial work of a solo developer, Lorenzo “eyeguys” Redaelli, and the first work published by developer Santa Ragione, of Wheels Of Aurelia fame. Like many young adults, it’s rough around the edges and entirely too sincere.

Gran Saga Gets Impressive Gameplay Trailer Ahead of Release Date Announcement

3 years 4 months ago

Npixel revealed a brand new gameplay trailer of its upcoming MMORPG Gran Saga.

The trailer comes ahead of the announcement of the release date for the South Korean market, which is coming on January 7.

The trailer showcases plenty aspects of gameplay and it’s definitely impressive, thanks to the game’s charming visual style and massive battle.

We even get to see some interesting minigames that appear to stray from the usual MMORPG tropes.

If you’re unfamiliar with Gran Saga, it’s a cross-platform MMORPG that will launch on both PC and mobile. Pre-registrations are already open in Korea and have already passed the 300,000 mark.

The development team includes staff that previously worked on Seven Knights

You can enjoy the trailer below.

Incidentally, Npixel isn’t working just on Gran Saga, as they also recently announced the equally-impressive Chrono Odyssey, even if the visual style is entirely different.

A Lost Game Boy Add-On Called the WorkBoy Has Been Found After 28 Years

3 years 4 months ago
A lost, unreleased Game Boy add-on known as the WorkBoy has been discovered after 28 years and reveals an accessory that could have brought PDA-like functions like an address book, calculator, appointment book, and so much more to Nintendo's beloved handheld device. Video game historian Liam Robertson shared his quest to find out what happened to this add-on in a new Game History Secrets video on DidYouKnowGaming? and, not only did he track down the original creators behind the WorkBoy to learn the story behind why it was never released, he was able to get one of the only prototypes in the world working. As you can see in the image below, the WorkBoy was a keyboard that connected to the Game Boy via Link Cable and would allow you to take advantage of 12 apps, including an address/phone book and appointment book. [caption id="attachment_2457167" align="aligncenter" width="720"]Image Credit: Liam Robertson - DidYouKnowGaming? - Game History Secrets Image Credit: Liam Robertson - DidYouKnowGaming? - Game History Secrets[/caption] The WorkBoy was set to be an officially licensed accessory for the Game Boy that was designed by Source Research and Development and produced by Fabtek Inc. in close collaboration with Nintendo. In January 1992, WorkBoy was officially trademarked by Nintendo of America and even made an appearance at CES 1992.

My games of this year were my games of every year

3 years 4 months ago

Editor's note: Take a breath. We're almost there. 2020's been quite the year, and it's very nearly over. Across the festive break, members of the Eurogamer team and our contributors will be running down their personal top five games of 2020, before we announce our game of the year - and before, of course, we hand over to you for the annual Reader's Top 50. Thanks for being with us this year, and see you on the other side.

I barely played any new games this year. It feels wrong to admit that, as a professional games journalist, even one who's not exactly on the frontline any more. It feels like an unforgivable lapse of curiosity. It feels like a retreat. And if I am honest with myself, it was a retreat that began before March - before everything in life became a retreat. I just couldn't bring myself to start new games, to enter new worlds. I wanted familiarity. As I wrote in May, "there was nothing new I fancied playing, or rather I fancied playing nothing new - I wanted the soothing feeling of old routines, patterns of thought and movement worn smooth with use."

CDPR states it will defend itself 'vigorously' against Cyberpunk 2077 class action lawsuit

3 years 4 months ago

CD Projekt RED has stated that it will "vigorously" defend itself against a class action lawsuit, recently filed against the Polish developer/publisher in the wake of Cyberpunk 2077's less-than-stellar launch.

As reported by Bloomberg, New York's Rosen Law Firm filed suit December 24, alleging that CDPR misled its investors in regards to the quality of the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the highly anticipated RPG. The suit states that CDPR did not accurately disclose details that the last-gen edition of Cyberpunk 2077 was "virtually unplayable" and that the developer's statements were "materially false and misleading," which Rosen alleges led to damages for CDPR's investors.

The suit asks the court to ascertain whether CDPR intentionally hid the PS4/Xbox One edition's performance and quality from the company's investors and shareholders. Whether there is any actual evidence of this remains to be seen, though many have raised eyebrows at CDPR's decision to only supply PC review codes to the press. The lawsuit itself reportedly contains errors, which may also hamper chances at a successful trial.

The best game you missed in September 2020: Craftopia

3 years 4 months ago

The player stands with a bucket in hand and looks at all the crops they've grown.

When Kirby inhales an enemy, he’s able to steal that character’s famous moves as well as a bit of their appearance. Now imagine a group of Kirbys, all attached to one another like some pink frog spawn, inhaling every popular game that released over the last couple of years. Then the violent eruption as Multi-Kirby belches out the result: Craftopia.

2020's best games took me under the surface

3 years 4 months ago

Editor's note: Take a breath. We're almost there. 2020's been quite the year, and it's very nearly over. Across the festive break, members of the Eurogamer team and our contributors will be running down their personal top five games of 2020, before we announce our game of the year - and before, of course, we hand over to you for the annual Reader's Top 50. Thanks for being with us this year, and see you on the other side.

Sometimes when I have trouble sleeping, I imagine myself climbing out of a vast underground citadel, stairways upon stairways following each other upward in the light of a single candle. I pass doorways heaped with dust and swivelling, gold-rimmed mirrors of the kind that often feature in Zelda puzzles. Reaching the top after many days I halt inside the entrance, listening to birdsong, my toes inches from a bar of sunshine. Then I rewind the daydream and start again. I fantasise that I'm some ancient creature roused from long slumber to right some epic wrong, but in the end, I don't really need to know what lies out there in the surface world. I'm in it for the suspense and serenity of the climb.

I haven't played Hades, the current Stygian adventure of choice, but I've spent a lot of time in virtual underworlds this year. You don't have to look hard for a real-life parallel there. Nor do you have to be an ancient Greek adventurer to know that underworlds aren't just places of death and disease. They are refuges for wayward imaginations, shelters and spawning vats for ideas swiftly killed by the harsh clarity of sunlight, the abrasive fresh air. The games that define 2020 for me understand this.

Stardew Valley 1.5 Update Coming to Consoles Early Next Year

3 years 4 months ago

Developer of Stardew Valley, ConcernedApe, took to Twitter recently to confirm that the game’s recent 1.5 update would be making their way to consoles “early next year.”

While the developer doesn’t want to promise anything, they mentioned that it could be ready by the end of January.

At the very least, it seems like the update is on track to be added early next year as ConcernedApe said. All too often developers and publishers have creative definitions of timelines and early next year could mean anything from January to June. Fortunately that doesn’t appear to be the case here.

As far as the mobile version of Stardew Valley goes, though, there’s no timeline yet available. Fans there will have to be patient and check in on the progress until the timeline becomes clearer.

Update 1.5 for Stardew Valley recently released on PC and it’s a big one. It features new farm types, randomized community center upgrades, splitscreen co-op, new crops & animals and a lot more.

Sakura Wars stage show looks like an absolute delight

3 years 4 months ago

What would the festive season be without a delightful, high-energy pantomime? And for video game/anime fans, there's no production more perfect for your needs than this awesome-looking Sakura Wars stage show, which took place in Japan back in late-November.

Shin Sakura Wars the Stage is a live-action adaptation of Sega's Sakura Wars - a soft reboot of the legendary RPG franchise that launched on PS4 back in 2019. The show dramatizes an abridged version of the Sakura Wars' narrative, and sees Flower Division stars Claris, Anastasia, Azami, Hatsuho, Sumire and Sakura herself perform energetic song-and-dance routines, before taking to their Spiricle units for dramatic, demonic battles.

With authentic costuming and inventive set projection - all backed by Kohei Tanaka's joyful and inspiring score - Sakura Wars the Stage looks a lot of fun. There is also a neat meta effect to the whole affair, given that Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division are stage performers, (though this real-world show appears to go off with far less hitches than the troupe's awkward in-game productions.)

You can check out a portion of the show, complete with English subtitles, in this video courtesy of Avex Pictures. Hopefully the performance will be made available to watch in its entirety in the near future.

This 3D-printed Switch cartridge holder is the stuff of dreams

3 years 4 months ago

As someone who is embedded in tabletop and gaming culture on a regular basis; I'm amazed at the sort of things people are able to create these days at home. 3D printing has made a lot of crafting accessible to the masses, and this Switch cartridge holder is proof of that.

Themed like an innocent looking Thwomp enemy from the Mario series, the box actually opens up and holds a decent amount of Switch carts. Shared on Reddit by creator budwad, the process apparently had a "steep learning curve." They apparently used the CR6-SE printer, which is one of the more affordable (but still expensive, in my mind) 3D printers out there.  To get the finished Thwomp look, it was painted with acrylic.

By popular demand they put the base on Thingaverse, so you can try it out for yourself. A lot of similar "official" items I've seen hold around half (or less) of the carts here, which just goes to show you the beauty of 3D printing. With enough know-how, you can modify the project to suit your needs and add more slots.

After buying a 3D printer, I learnt CAD and made myself a new cartridge holder [Reddit]

The PS4's Spectacular Dreams Game Is Hurting From A Lack Of Players

3 years 4 months ago

When LittleBigPlanet creators Media Molecule launched the game-as-an-engine PlayStation 4 exclusive Dreams into early access in April 2019, I remember feeling a cautious optimism. The technology behind the game was impressive, letting people make their own music, games, and artwork with its robust toolset, then share…
