3 years 6 months ago

Xbox and Sega have partnered to bring Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 to Xbox Live Gold Free Play Days. Starting today, and throughout the weekend, you get to live out your gangster fantasies for free.

The Yakuza series is known for its over-the-top combat, intense drama, and wacky minigames, so players who are new to or familiar with the series will have a lot of content to occupy themselves with over the course of three extensive games. You probably won't be able to beat all of them over the weekend, but I won't stop you from trying. Just make sure to eat and sleep, okay?

Burn everything you own in Bonfire Peaks' new demo

3 years 6 months ago

Bonfire Peaks

is a very irresponsible game. Oh, it looks lovely, but I’m certain there must be laws against setting fire to crates of garbage all the way up the side of a mountain, even if you have to wrap your head around some peculiar puzzles to do so. There’s a demo out the now – and at the very least, it’s a good excuse to keep those arson inclinations firmly locked behind your monitor.

Apex Legends launches cross-play beta next week

3 years 6 months ago

As we already knew, developer Respawn's free-to-play battle royale effort Apex Legends is getting cross-play support; as we didn't already know, Apex Legends is getting cross-play support next Tuesday, 6th October.

Cross-play will enable Apex Legends players across PS4, Xbox One, and PC to either buddy up or battle it out against one another, and to connect with acquaintances on other platforms, players can search usernames and send friend requests via Apex Legends' in-game friend list. The receiving party will see a lobby notification they can either accept, reject, or block.

Once you've amassed a suitable collection of cross-platforms pals, you can send party invites via the friend menu; cross-platform invite notifications will appear in the lobby, while same-platform invites will continue to make use of the platform's default notifications system. Respawn notes that voice chat will work between platforms too.

Unlike the Xbox versions, Dirt 5 on PS4 won't transfer save data to PS5

3 years 6 months ago

Bringing our save files from PS4 over to PS5 isn't something we should have to wonder about – it should be one of those invisible "it just works" features – but that's not how things are shaping up.

Dirt 5 is another game that will be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 but will not let players transfer their progression from one console to the next when they freely upgrade to the PS5 version.

"Currently on Xbox, all progress can be carried over between generations," Codemasters said in response to a question on Twitter. "On PlayStation, your Playgrounds creations can be carried over, but other game progress (Career, currency, saved liveries) cannot. If that changes, we'll let you know!"

We're still making sense of how widespread this issue will be for PlayStation fans hoping for a smooth console transition, but for now – with Spider-Man: Miles Morales supporting PS4-to-PS5 saves and Maneater and Yakuza 7 proactively announcing otherwise – it's very much a case-by-case basis.

I'm curious to hear specific details about the transfer process for Miles Morales "closer to launch."

Nintendo Download: Super Mario Bros. 35

3 years 6 months ago

A first-party Nintendo game is out today! As long as you're okay with battle royales. And micro-eShop games that have limited windows. And...have Switch Online. Wait, come back!

Yep, Super Mario Bros. 35 is definitely the headliner today, and time will tell if it becomes the next Tetris 99. You better believe that if it does catch on, Nintendo will walk back that "limited time release" nonsense and give it some paid DLC, just like Tetris 99 did.

As far as other big releases go, Rogue Company is out today in full, having enjoyed a paid early access period. Ys Origin is also out on Switch, which is going to be a big deal to some people.

This simple Devil May Cry 5 mod does one thing: It gives Vergil a plastic chair throne

3 years 6 months ago

The Devil May Cry 5 modding scene has been vibrant ever since it was released, and these past few weeks have been no exception.

It all started with a series of tweets that eventually became a mod: the idea of Vergil's decadent endgame throne getting replaced by those scrape-prone plastic lawn and garden chairs. It's such a small touch, but when it plays out (like in Franctastic's video below) it perfectly fits the otherwise dour mood that the scene otherwise exudes.

This is partially why so many folks are up in arms about the lack of a proper PC port for Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. I want to see 4K60FPS mods for the "armies of enemies" mechanic. Maybe a 4K lawn chair? At the very least, previous platforms are getting Vergil as DLC.

So you can just imagine the chair and get all of the Vergil benefits.

My Nintendo has a Dodo Airlines bag and a few other physical rewards for Animal Crossing fans

3 years 6 months ago

Those Mario pins went stupidly fast, but maybe there's hope for My Nintendo's newly-stocked Animal Crossing rewards. (Yeah, right. Every cool item with limited quantities is a nightmare to get this year.)

My favorite of the bunch is the Dodo Airlines shopping bag because of the color and understated logo, but there's also a Leaf bandana, a Tom Nook keychain figure, and a Nook shopping bag. These items range from 600 to 1,000 Platinum Points each and, as usual, Nintendo is charging a shipping fee.

Godspeed. The site didn't break for me and my order went through. I hope you have the same luck!

[Thanks, Neronium]

You can play three Yakuza games for free until Sunday if you have Xbox Live Gold

3 years 6 months ago

With Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon shaking things up and Xbox Game Pass bringing first-time players into the fold, it's another great year for curious players to see what the cherished Yakuza series is all about.

I won't lie, it can be intimidating – and super easy to put off as a seemingly huge and potentially years-long undertaking. But one step at a time is all you need to see if Yakuza's street-brawler action, cozy city vibes, larger-than-life personalities, and wacky side-stories and mini-games are your sorta jam.

As a limited-time trial offer, Sega is letting Xbox Live Gold subscribers play as much Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 as they can possibly squeeze in from October 1 to October 4.

These games are way too long to finish during that free window, so I'd start with Yakuza 0, a prequel that's often cited as the most accessible and intriguing for all-new players. I'd also try to prioritize reaching Chapter 3: A Gilded Cage sooner than later. You've gotta experience Majima's introduction.

It's risky to hope something lasts forever, but I'm kind of at that point with Yakuza.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Minecraft DLC Required Every Stage To Be Reworked

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Nintendo revealed its Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Minecraft DLC and while it had many reacting along the lines of 'Minecraft Steve? More like Minecraft Peeve', others were excited to see the newest roster addition. What else was interesting about the reveal was how much work went into making this move happen in a way that made sense.

When bringing the wildly successful world of Minecraft into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the team had to make a lot of in-game adjustments to make it work. In order to make Steve, Alex, Enderman, and the Zombie feel true-to-the-game, Nintendo needed to implement various Minecraft-related features like crafting and mining. This meant that the stages needed to be reworked, something creator Masahiro Sakurai mentioned during the earlier reveal.

Sakurai-san mentioned during the event that the team had no idea that bringing Minecraft into Smash would ever become a reality, despite it being in ideation quite a bit in the past. Now that it's official, he revealed that every single stage in the game had to be reworked in order for the Minecraft crew to play the way they were meant to. That's over 100 stages that needed to be changed!

Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost Trailer Shows Off Revamped Rewards

3 years 6 months ago

Destiny 2's annual Halloween event, Festival of the Lost, returns October 6 and Bungie has just released a new trailer showing off all of those (previously leaked) 'spooky' rewards for Guardians to earn. We trick and treat in the name of Cayde. Do it for the puppies, and the loot.

Festival of the Lost is nothing new but it is my personal favorite out of all of the Destiny 2 events. With Halloween-themed rewards and new activities, it's a fun reason to dive in and celebrate all things 'spoopy' while continuing on that daily grind.

With Beyond Light on the horizon and the complete shakeup of content available, this year's Festival of the Lost is kicking off a little earlier than usual. The festivities begin on October 6 and will last until November 3, giving a week buffer in between the event itself and the release of the upcoming expansion.

Blizzard have delayed World Of Warcraft: Shadowlands

3 years 6 months ago

Sorry, death. With the news that World Of Warcraft: Shadowlands has been delayed out of its October launch, it looks like we’ll be avoiding the grave a little while longer. Blizzard today announced that their behemoth MMO’s next expansion has been pushed back to give the underworld a bit more polish as developers continue to deal with the weirdness of remote working.

Impossible arena shooter Spaceflux has my head in a spin

3 years 6 months ago

I’ve seen a lotta shooters in my time, but five seconds into Spaceflux‘s early access trailer and my brain’s already turned to soup. Not content to use recursive geometry for puzzles, Calin Ardelean’s fractal shooter takes these non-euclidean spaces and asks you to play a round of Quake in their infinite hallways. Out today on Steam Early Access, I just hope it’s not as stomach-churning as that sounds.

How Does Star Wars Squadrons' Campaign Compare to Other Star Wars Games?

3 years 6 months ago
Star Wars isn't just one of the most famous movie franchises of all time, it's also inspired some of the best video games ever made -- and also a bunch of pretty bad ones. Like the eternal battle between good and evil space wizards, for every Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic there's a Masters of Teras Kasi; for every Jedi Knight II there's a Kinect Star Wars; and for every Star Wars: Battlefront II there's a Star Wars Battlefront II. Now that we know how Star Wars: Squadrons' single-player mode and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order stack up against the pantheon of games from a galaxy far, far away, let's witness the power of the fully armed and operational video game-reviewing station that is IGN and look back at every time we've weighed in on a Star Wars game. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-star-wars-game-review&captions=true"] Once you've refreshed your memory, let us know which game stands out as your all-time favorite.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands Delayed

3 years 6 months ago
Blizzard has announced it is delaying the release date for the next major World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands. The next expansion will not be released on October 27 as originally planned, and there is currently no replacement date announced. In a blog post addressed to the WoW community, Blizzard announced it made the difficult decision to delay Shadowlands to “later this year.” World of Warcraft executive producer John Hight says that this was the “right decision for the game — and for our players.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/27/world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-gameplay-trailer"] “Over the past several months of testing, we’ve made significant progress iterating on and polishing the core features and gameplay of Shadowlands,” writes Hight. “We’re at a point where the zones, the campaign, the level-up questing experience, and the story we have to tell are essentially ready to share.” “However, as everything started coming together and we’ve been listening to and building upon your feedback, it’s become clear we need a little more time for additional polish, and to balance and iterate on some interlocking pieces — particularly those related to the endgame,” Hight explains. Although Shadowlands will be delayed, Hight says that on October 13 the pre-patch for Shadowlands will be released which will include groundwork for the expansion, revamped character leveling, and a new-player experience on Exile’s Reach, along with new character customization. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/27/world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-bastion-story-trailer"] Shadowlands is the eight expansion since World of Warcraft was released and is set to feature the first “level squish” for the MMO along with an overhauled leveling system.
