IGN UK Podcast #559: The Manic Marsupial and Jesse's Voice Changer

3 years 6 months ago
The manic marsupial, AKA Crash Bandicoot is back, and because he forgot to press record the first time; so is Dale with a second go at explaining all his thoughts on the game. Jesse is also on and has been playing a ton of Star Wars: Squadrons. In other news, he also has a new voice changer toy that distracts us for a good 30 seconds too. Cardy rounds off the trio by telling us all about his early thoughts of the Mafia Remaster and we also have an extremely tight round of The Endless Search that needs an action replay to decide a winner. It's tense stuff. Remember, if you want to get in touch with the podcast, please do: ign_ukfeedback@ign.com.

Flight Simulator Studio Working on New Project for Focus Home Interactive (Updated)

3 years 6 months ago
Update: A representative for Microsoft confirmed that Asobo Studio is only working on a new game for Focus Home Interactive, not a new project for Microsoft. The correct translation from the original La Tribune story is as follows: “What’s for sure is that Flight Simulator will keep us busy for quite a long time! It’s something we’re engaged for the 10 years to come, may be more. We will maintain the current team, may be reinforce it. Apart from our partnership with Focus Home Interactive [the French publisher behind A Plague Tale: Innocence] for a new game, we have nothing to announce at the moment.” The studio does confirm it will be "busy for quite a long time" still working on Flight Simulator, but beyond that does not announce any new project with Microsoft. IGN regrets the error, the original story below has been updated to remove the inaccuracy. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Microsoft Flight Simulator was released just a little over a month ago and its developer, Asobo Studio, is already working on another project with Microsoft. Asobo Studio said in an interview with La Tribune that in addition to supporting Microsoft Flight Simulator for 10 years, it is working on a new project: one is a partnership with Focus Home Interactive, the publisher behind 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence - another Asobo game. Considering Microsoft Flight Simulator has a supposed 10-year tail to it, and it is yet unclear what the Focus Home project may be.

Silent Hill 4 is now available on GOG

3 years 6 months ago

2020 vibes in a Silent Hill 4 screenshot.

Hitting that 2020 mood bang on the nose, GOG today added Silent Hill 4: The Room to their catalogue. Konami’s 2004 horror game is about a fella stuck in his flat, so desperate to get outside that he crawls through a mysterious hole in his bathroom wall and tumbles into nightmarish worlds filled with the horrors of himself. Been there, pal. Silent Hill 4 has not been readily available (well, legitimately) on PC for years, so it’s good to see on pop up GOG.

Apex Legends will be testing out cross-play next week

3 years 6 months ago

The explosive sci-fi world of Apex Legends is getting set to open the doors to a helluva lot more wannabe Legends, as developer Respawn Entertainment has announced that it will be launching its cross-play beta on Tuesday, October 6.

The new feature will allow battle royalers (royalty?) on PS4, PC, and Xbox One platforms to all thrown down on the World's Edge. Players will be able to add or invite their friends on other platforms, before dropping in for a bout of bombastic action. It should be noted that, due to the mouse-and-keyboard advantage, PC and console players will automatically be kept separate when searching for games, but PC players can invite willing console players into the PC pool.

Review: Spellbreak

3 years 6 months ago

Have you ever had a game that just clicked with you right off the bat? You play one game, one level, one match, or one round, and its charms impress you enough that you're in, no questions asked?

Spellbreak is the first game in a long time to click with me like that. I decided to try it out on a whim and found myself ignoring the alarm on my phone that tells me to go to sleep just so I could get in another round or two. I was immediately and legitimately hooked. The battle system is spectacular, and I just wanted to keep playing until my eyes would refuse to stay open.

The more I played, the better I got, and soon enough, I realized this might be the perfect battle royale for me. And it really could be if everything else about it wasn't so goddamn dull.

Crash Bandicoot 4 plays best on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X

3 years 6 months ago

Activision impressed us with the brilliant Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 and with the new Crash Bandicoot 4 - It's About Time, it looks like a pattern is forming. The firm looks intent on mining its exhaustive IP, delivering remakes then moving onto brand new sequels. Based on the quality of this release, it's a strategy that may well play off - Crash Bandicoot 4 is a solid game and an authentic series entry, with numerous improvements and upgrades that pay off while respecting the original formula. The new release also makes use of Unreal Engine 4, offering numerous technical improvements over the recent remakes including a much higher frame-rate - at least if you're gaming on the right consoles.

Crash 4 perfectly captures the look and feel of an animated film - expressive character models stretch and squish in a cartoon style in both cinematics and gameplay, while gorgeous per-pixel motion blur accentuates every movement. The UE4 motion blur is one of my favorite things here - the shutter speed settings are just perfect. That said, you can disable this from the options menu if you're not so keen on the effect. The point is that the quality of the animation work is truly on point here, the visuals are first class and the overall package is excellent in presentational terms.

Baldur's Gate 3 reveals races and classes ahead of next week's early access launch

3 years 6 months ago

In the run-up to its early access launch next week, developer Larian has been on a Baldur's Gate 3 info-splurge, this time detailing the various races, sub-races, and classes available to those signing up to role-play their way through the first of three acts on 6th October.

Initially, players will be able to select from 16 races and sub-races when creating characters - variations of humans, githyanki, elves, drow, half-elves, dwarves, halflings, and tieflings - before assigning them one of six classes, further divided into sub-classes.

Humans, the most populace race in Faerûn, are said to be tenacious and creative "with an endless capacity for growth", making them particularly suited to adventuring, while the githyanki are described as "peerless warriors from the Astral Plane" seeking the total destruction of the mind flayers.

Baldur's Gate 3 Reveals the 16 Races You Can Play at Early Access Launch

3 years 6 months ago
Larian has revealed that Baldur's Gate 3's character creator will feature 16 races and subraces to choose from at launch, as well as 6 base classes (each with at least two subclasses). It's also explained how the character creator will feature 150 photo-scanned faces to choose from. Players will be able to choose from humans, githyanki, elves, drow, half-elf, dwarves, halflings, and tieflings (most of which come with subraces, a full list of which you can see below). Races such as drow and githyanki are incredibly rare in the game's Sword Coast setting, and NPCs will react accordingly. You can see pictures of those races in the character creator in the gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=baldurs-gate-3-character-creation-screenshots&captions=true"] That character creator will feature 150 faces to choose from across the races, which Larian explains are "based on 3D scans of actors and models (blemishes and all), selected because their features roughly resembled the direction for each race in the game, as well of course for diversity and variety in the human-like races." The choice to include scanned faces was made to allow for a much higher level of detail than a traditional custom-created character face. Aside from the faces, Larian promises hundreds of choices in the character creator to make your hero unique, many of which will have a direct effect on the world and characters around you. One of the most important choices you'll make is your character's class. Early Access classes will be Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock and Wizard, each of which will feature at least two subclasses. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/27/baldurs-gate-3-gameplay-demo"] You can see the full list of Early Access races and subraces below, as described by Larian: Human The most common face to see in Faerûn, humans are known for their tenacity, creativity, and endless capacity for growth.

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Is Darn Impressive

3 years 6 months ago

Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios is shaping up to be a D&D fan's dream come true. Last month, we learned even more about the in-game social circles and romance, this week we're learning more about the incredibly in-depth character creation tool.

In Larian's latest community update, the team is diving into how players will be able to create their ideal character in-game. Whether leaning into total fantasy or just looking to recreate yourself for total immersion, the tools used for Baldur's Gate 3 aim to allow for a lot of player freedom.

Though not unusual in games of this genre, Baldur's Gate 3 will allow players to choose their race, subrace, background, and class. Each selection will have an impact on the game, including how your companions perceive you and how you can talk to them.

In true D&D style, players will also have six starter Ability points to allocate between these attributes:

  • Strength
  • Dexterity
  • Consitution
  • Intelligence
  • Wisdom
  • Charisma

I always play the huge flirt, so Charisma is usually my first Ability Points dump. Each selection weighs heavily on what class you choose, which subclass, and the race. Play to your character's strengths and what you want to see out of them during your time in-game.

Replay – Bioshock Infinite

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

When Irrational Games released the original Bioshock in 2007, the failed utopia of Rapture enraptured captivated players in a way few first-person shooters ever had. Many thought the story of Andrew Ryan and his crumbling world would never be equaled or topped, that is until Bioshock Infinite came along. Following Booker DeWitt, players took on the assignment of finding a powerful captive named Elizabeth and freeing her from the steampunk hellscape known as Columbia. While somewhat divisive, Infinite continued the series' storied tradition of keeping players on their toes and telling one of the wildest stories on the last generation of consoles.

Join Andrew Reiner, Dan Tack, Joe Juba, and me as we ready our sky-hook and take to the dystopian streets of Bioshock Infinite.

We went live earlier but you can catch the full archive of the stream above! If you can't get enough of our live shows, remember to subscribe on YouTubeTwitchTwitter, and Facebook to get notified when we go live each week!

Nexus Mods Bans Political Content Ahead Of November US Election

3 years 6 months ago

With our ongoing Mod Corner series highlighting some of the more unusual mods out there, we're on Nexus a lot. This week, the popular modding oasis has made a big decision regarding content on their hub, effectively wiping out all politically influenced mods on the community-driven website.

The ban is retroactively in place for September 28 and will focus on all mods that stem from "sociopolitical issues in the United States." With the election looming ahead this  November, tensions are continuing to rise higher and, according to the site's owner, that has negatively impacted what Nexus Mods aims to achieve with their community.

In a recent blog post on Nexus, site owner Robin Scott, AKA Darkone, delivered a very blunt message regarding perceived troll mods. According to Scott, these mods are "being uploaded by cowards with sock puppet accounts deliberabtely to try and cause a stir."

Get Free Anime Thanks To Xbox Game Pass And Funimation Partnership

3 years 6 months ago

The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is already a good deal for its growing free games library and included Xbox Live membership, but now it's getting even better. Now you can have the power of God and anime on your side (the Vine reference was vital) because Microsoft is offering a two month free subscription to Funimation's Premium Plus membership with Ultimate.

Funimation, like CrunchyRoll, is an amazing service that offers streamable anime from an ever-growing library. It's a great way to get anime cheap on numerous devices while still supporting the creators that make those epic tales. For those that have never checked out services like Funimation, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate deal is a solid reason to test it out before committing to an annual subscription.

$70 Next-Gen Games Make Xbox Game Pass Look Even Better

3 years 6 months ago

It's no secret that gaming is an expensive hobby; the cost of a console puts you hundreds of dollars in the hole, with each subsequent game costing another chunk of change – not to mention any DLC or microtransactions you throw on top of that ... and don't even get me started on the accessories and extra hard drive space you'll inevitably want! However, the latest trend in gaming could be even more disheartening for those barely able to support their gaming habit as it is: A bevy of next-gen titles (including Demon's Souls, Destruction AllStarsNBA 2K21, Godfall) have been listed for $70, suggesting that the upcoming generation could be even more expensive than the current one.

In the face of higher individual game prices converging with expensive new hardware, Xbox's subscription service, Game Pass, could be the average gamer's weapon of choice when combating the pricey reality of the hobby. The service, which grants you access to more than 100 games on Xbox or PC, sets you back $15 a month (or $180 for the annual subscription). While it doesn't include every new game, players get access to a huge backlog of titles across every generation of Xbox, plus most of them are available to stream to Android devices through the cloud.
