Spelunky 2 review: a worthy successor to a classic

3 years 7 months ago

A Spelunky 2 screenshot in which the player is about to be hit by a mole.

Spelunky 1 felt so precision engineered, so complete, so perfect, that the announcement of Spelunky 2 seemed like the reveal of a new wrist watch. If it had a fancier strap and more cogs, at best, I’d still just be hoping that it told me the correct time.

Elite Dangerous will make Horizons expansion free for all players

3 years 7 months ago

Spaceships and a spacecar get rowdy in an Elite Dangerous: Horizons screenshot.

Frontier Developments today announced that they’ll soon give the Elite Dangerous expansion Horizons free to all players, letting everyone roll around planets in spacecars before the next upcoming expansion invites us to walk on them with our own two spacefeet. The Horizons season pass has covered almost five years of new features, including character customisation, the ability to pilot ships cooperatively with a crew, and those spacecars. It has cost £20/€25/$30 (though sales often took it down to £5) so free is quite nice. People who have bought Horizons will get an exclusive paint job as thanks, mind.

The video is about three minutes in length and is truly a love letter to fans of the RPG series. It not only showcases tons of older characters from the anime but there are some unique character designs here that just look incredible.

The animation is done by Bones Inc., who you might know as the Japanese studio that works on anime such as My Hero Academia, Mob Psycho 100, and Soul Eater –just to name a few.

You can watch the GOTCHA music video right here:

Pokemon Home Link to Pokemon Go Will Arrive This Year

3 years 7 months ago
The Pokemon Company has announced that a link between Pokemon Go and Pokemon Home will be set up "before the end of 2020". This will allow the transfer of Pokemon between the mobile Pokemon Go app and the Pokemon Sword and Shield Nintendo Switch games. Revealed by Pokemon Company President and CEO, Tsunekazu Ishihara, the link will enable Pokemon caught in Pokemon Go to "set off on an adventure in the world of Pokemon Sword and Shield by way of Pokemon Home." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/29/pokemon-sword-and-shield-expansion-pass-updates-full-show"] There's more to the system than just that, too. If you send a Pokemon from Pokemon Go to Pokemon Home, you'll be able to open a Mystery Box in Pokemon Go. Opening the box will cause the mythical Pokemon Meltan to appear on the map within the Pokemon Go app. In addition, you'll also receive a mystery gift in Pokemon Home which contains a special Melmetal capable of Gigantamaxing, for use in Pokemon Sword and Shield. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=pokemon-home-price-and-features&captions=true"] The announcement came as part of an update video about Pokemon Sword and Shield, which also revealed the Crown Tundra DLC release date. Pokemon Sword & Shield: Crown Tundra DLC October Release Date Revealed

3 years 7 months ago
The Crown Tundra expansion for Pokemon Sword & Shield will be released on October 22. The Crown Tundra is a snowy new open area being added to the world of Sword & Shield, adding new characters, Pokemon and quests. You'll be able to explore Pokemon Dens, and meet every legendary Pokemon in the series so far – as well as a brand new mythical Pokemon, and new forms of the original legendary birds, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/29/pokemon-sword-and-shield-crown-tundra-expansion-pass-trailer"] Dynamax Adventures will let you join 3 other trainers to explore caves and take on battles against Dynamax Pokemon. The brief clips we've seen point to choices of route that take you past different Pokemon types. The Galarian Star Tournament will also be added to the game, an endgame event allowing you to battle alongside and against trainers from throughout Sword and Shield. The tournament should offer new story and character elements that weren't available in the main game. On November 6, you'll also be able to buy bundled versions of Pokemon Sword and Shield, alongside their respective expansion passes. No price was given for the bundled version. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/pokemon-sword-and-shield-expansion-pass-updates-full-show"] To celebrate the Crown Tundra announcement, you'll also be able to catch eight versions of Ash's Pikachu, wearing a variety of different caps – each unlocked by Mystery Gift passwords that are entered in-game. Passwords will be available in "various places", but the first – for Pikachu wearing Ash Ketchum's original cap – is P1KACHUGET.

Zynga's legendary FarmVille to close after a decade of success

3 years 7 months ago

Zynga has announced that its era-defining Facebook app, FarmVille will be closing its barn doors for good in December, following almost 11 successful years of operation.

Zynga revealed the news in a statement on its official website. "We’re aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning, helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have," said the developer. "For that we say thank you."

Originally launching on the hellish social media site in 2009, FarmVille immediately attracted the attention of millions of players, with the user base rising to a staggering 84m active farmers during its 2010 peak. But with Adobe's plans to stop distributing Flash Player in 2021, Facebook will no longer be supporting flash games, spelling the end for the flower-growing, crop-arranging time-filler. FarmVille will close on December 31, 2020.

While most assuredly the end-of-an-era, the closure will not affect the FarmVille franchise in the bigger picture. FarmVille 3: Animals is set to launch on iOS and Android platforms later this year, thus pocket-croppers will still have no problems cultivating private worlds whilst hidden away in the office toilets.

Live A Live 26th anniversary live stream promises a 'surprise'

3 years 7 months ago

Square Enix has announced that it will be holding a live stream this weekend to celebrate the 26th anniversary of quirky Super Famicom RPG Live A Live.

Originally released back in 1994, Live A Live shook up the RPG scene by infusing several unique gameplay ideas. These include the concept of guiding multiple characters through wildly disconnected scenarios, as well as showcasing adaptive gameplay that changes up the battle system and other mechanics as the story progresses.

The stream will feature guest appearances from original Live A Live team members, including director Takashi Tokita, artist Kazuyuki Kurashima, composer Yoko Shimomura, and battle director Nobuyuki Inoue. Most notably, Square Enix promises a "surprise," which is likely connected to the new trademark filed by the publisher back in July.

The Live A Live stream will take place Saturday, October 3 at 20:00 JST, which is a bleary-eyed 04:00 PT / 07:00 ET. You can check out the presentation on the official Square Enix YouTube channel. We'll be sure to keep you informed of any reveals right here on Destructoid - so maybe just have a lie-in instead... And remember yer boy's working for ya.

Brutal Legend and Doom Eternal headline October's Game Pass offerings

3 years 7 months ago

Xbox Game Pass continues to get better. As Brett pointed out recently, Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda is a boon for the service, as Doom Eternal was announced mere days after the news. We knew it was coming on October 1, but there's more than just Doom arriving in October.

This morning, Microsoft unveiled the full October 2020 Game Pass lineup. Doom Eternal will be joined by Drake Hollow on October 1: so far, so good. On October 8, we'll also get Brutal Legend, Forza Motorsport 7 and Ikenfell. Talk about a spread!

Man, seeing Brutal Legend in any context again brings back a rush of memories. I remember how stoked everyone was about the demo (a playable Jack Black metal game with Tim Curry as the villain? How could you go wrong?!); and how polarizing it was after people realized that it was actually part (janky) RTS. What a whirlwind of discussion that game was.

Now we can relive it all over again with a new generation! And race some cars and go on adventures together at the same time. Game Pass is going to be killer once the new generation hits. Speaking of!

Electronic Arts has announced today that EA Play is coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on November 10. Hey, that's right when the next generation starts!

(Update) Here's how to get all of the free Ash's Pikachu caps in Pokemon Sword and Shield

3 years 6 months ago

[Update: Codes for all eight caps are below!]

Today during this morning's special Pokémon stream, The Pokémon Company unveiled a new promo for Sword and Shield. Naturally, it involves Pikachu.

From here on out, special Pikachu will be distributed for Sword and Shield, tailored around the idea of it being "Ash's Pikachu" with eight different hats. The first one is available today, with more coming later "through various means." If history is anything to go by, codes doled out during tournament streams and the like are a safe bet.

To get the first rat, enter "P1KACHUGET" into your copy of the game.

To unlock the second version, use: "1CH00SEY0U."

A third version has been released: "P1KAADVANCE."

As well as a fourth version: "V0LTTACKLEP1KA."

And the fifth version: "P1KABESTW1SH."

And the sixth: "KAL0SP1KA."

Here's the seventh: "ULTRAP1KA."

And the eight: "K1NP1KA1855."

There's even going to be a full website for it! It's not live at the time of publication, but The Pokémon Company says more info will be available here. You can also take a look at the array of hats below.

Here's a new look at Pokemon Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra

3 years 7 months ago

This morning, The Pokémon Company showed us a rather lengthy trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield's upcoming Crown Tundra expansion, which includes a ton of new Pokémon and locations. It'll also open the Galarian Star Tournament, complete with familiar faces (past gym leaders, Hop, Isle of Armor trainers). You can "form a dream team" with these trainers.

The gist involves a person named Peony, who will send you on an adventure through the new region. The Pokémon Company reminds us that "every legendary" is up for grabs in this expansion. Dynamax Adventures are also in, allowing you to team up with up to three trainers and battle Pokémon in the depths of caves. Pokémon Go functionality with Pokémon Home is imminent ("before the end of the year"); linking them will grant you a special Melmetal that can Gigantamax.

Crown Tundra is out on October 22, and a physical "all in one bundle" is out on November 6: it'll include the expansions.

Genshin Impact Devs Say Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Was A Big Inspiration, But Their Game Is "Very Different"

3 years 7 months ago

Genshin Impact is a hot new open-world game right now that the internet seems to love, we've even been streaming it ourselves quite a bit here at Game Informer. That being said, there have been a lot of comparisons to the look and feel of Genshin in relation to Nintendo's Breath of the Wild. This comparison is accurate in the way that Breath of the Wild did inspired Genshin Impact, but the devs want gamers to know that their adventure is still "very different."

Studio miHoYo has been adamant since launch that the visuals of Genshin were inspired, but not limited, by Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it seems that some are taking those comparisons too far. With accusations that Genshin is a 'carbon copy' of the hit Nintendo game, the devs want fans to know that the visual stylization does not dictate the game's overall appeal.

In a recent interview with FreeMMOStation, a representative of miHoYo mentioned that the studio has always held Breath of the Wild "in high regard" and that it hasn't been shy about sharing how Nintendo's open-world game inspired Genshin.

Also revealed are the upcoming Dynamax Adventures, Galarian Start Tournament mode, and quite a few returning favorites with some of our favorite pocket monsters making a comeback.

The Crown Tundra is the second area you’ll be able to visit with your Expansion Pass,” Nintendo tells us. “See for yourself this vast landscape, with its drifts of glittering snow! In this frigid area with jagged, snowy mountains, people have settled in a small, tight-knit community. Early in your adventures here, a man named Peony will appoint you as the leader of his exploration team in the Crown Tundra. You’ll be tasked with investigating the reaches of this frozen land—including the depths of a Pokémon Den, something you’ve so far been able to glimpse only during Max Raid Battles!”

Hasbro's Avengers Gamerverse Line Adds New Skins, Just Like The Game

3 years 7 months ago

If you are playing Marvel's Avengers, there are plenty of action figures hitting store shelves, including a line within Hasbro's awesome six-inch Gamerverse series. Many are out now, but two new figures were just announced: the Stealth Suit Captain America variation and Atmosphere Iron Man (which you can see below).

True to the Avengers' saying, you'll need to assemble a couple of the figures. Both the Abomination and Joe Fixit (the suited Hulk) are sold in pieces. This means you'll need to purchase six figures to assemble Abomination. Ms. Marvel's package contains Abomination's torso, whereas Iron Man's contains one of his legs. Sadly, some of the body parts are sold outside of the Gamerverse line and instead fall into Marvel Legends boxes.

The Hulk is the only figure that doesn't come with a body part. Getting all of the Gamerverse figures is an expensive investment, but the figures look awesome when put together. Below is the entire gallery figures based on the game:
