10 Games That Deserve Their Own Netflix Animated Series

3 years 7 months ago

Netflix has delivered several animated series based on video games in recent years, adapting projects like Castlevania, Dragon’s Dogma, Resident Evil, and (probably) Splinter Cell. That’s a good start, but some major contenders are conspicuously absent. That’s why we’ve put together this list of 10 games that we think deserve their own animated series.

No one wants a show that just tries to follow the events of a game exactly; something is bound to get lost along the way, leaving fans upset and newcomers confused. So what makes a game a good candidate for this sort of adaptation? The world should be full of characters and stories worth telling, and have a distinct visual vibe that would look great in an animated format. It doesn’t need to replicate the exact magic of playing the game – the show can be its own thing. Different media do different things well, and that’s okay. So here’s what we’re thinking would work well for our games of choice.

Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Reportedly Required to Crunch to Meet November Release Date

3 years 7 months ago
CD Projekt Red is reportedly enacting mandatory six-day workweeks to finish work on Cyberpunk 2077 in time for its November release. The studio previously promised employees that there will be no mandatory crunch to finish the highly-anticipated RPG. In a report published by Bloomberg, CD Projekt Red studio head Adam Badowski sent an email to staff explaining the decision to crunch before the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. Badowski even addresses how the crunch decision reverses earlier promises from the company saying they wouldn’t require it. “I take it upon myself to receive the full backlash for the decision,” Badowski reportedly wrote in an email. “I know this is in direct opposition to what we’ve said about crunch. It’s also in direct opposition to what we’ve said about crunch. It’s also in direct opposition to what I personally grew to believe a while back — that crunch should never be the answer. But we’ve extended all other possible means of navigating the situation.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/01/cyberpunk-2077-rtx-showcase-trailer"] Crunch is a term across a variety of industries where employees are asked to put in extra hours, sometimes days, to complete a project before a deadline.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty gets October release date on Switch

3 years 7 months ago

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, developer Oddworld Inhabitants' acclaimed remake of its 1997 puzzle-platformer Abe's Oddysee, will be making its way to Switch on 27th October.

New 'n' Tasty isn't exactly new, of course, having burst onto various platforms (including Wii U) back in 2014, but it's still a delight, giving the original game's gorgeously wrought tale of meat-processing and revolution - as seen through the eyes of put-upon floor-waxer Abe - a fresh lease of life with wonderfully expressive 3D character models, backgrounds, and cinematics.

"Despite such major graphical surgery, the soul of the game has survived along with the aesthetic", wrote Eurogamer's Christian Donlan in his 9/10 review back at launch. "What really stands out about Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! is the sheer coherency of the original design. It was startling back in 1997 on the PlayStation when games did not often turn up with proper themes to think about, and it's still just as startling in 2014".

Pirates looking to give themselves an aesthetic boost upon the ocean, while also doing something for a good cause at the same time, can now purchase Sea of Thieves' striking new Sails of Union, with proceeds going to Stand Up To Cancer.

By day, the Sails of Union are pleasant enough affairs, providing an appealing splash of yellow for tastefully minded crews to admire and enjoy; by night, though, they're something a little bit special, resembling a beautiful star field shimmering against a darkened sky.

You can watch the Sails of Union work their magic in the trailer below, and if your head is suitably turned as a result, or if you simply fancy supporting a good cause, they're available now on Steam and the Microsoft Store for £4.99/$5.99 USD.

Nintendo's Jump Rope Challenge to Remain on Switch eShop 'Until Further Notice'

3 years 7 months ago
Nintendo has changed course and will not be removing the free download of Jump Rope Challenge on Switch on September 30, 2020, as originally planned, and stated that it will remain on the eShop "until further notice." The news was announced by Nintendo on Twitter alongside it revealing that players have performed 2.5 billion total jumps since Jump Rope Challenge's launch in June 2020. Jump Rope Challenge has players grabbing their Joy-Con and using them to jump rope virtually and working to get a high score as hopping bunnies. It boasts simple menus and no long tutorials, ensuring players can get into the fun with little barrier to entry. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=jump-rope-challenge-screenshots&captions=true"] This free game was created by a small group of Nintendo developers who were working at home following the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to "add some quick and fun movement into their daily lives." This decision by Nintendo, while not necessarily a sign of things to come, may be a glimmer of hope for other Nintendo games with a planned limited release, including Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Bros. 35. Super Mario 3D All-Stars collects Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy in one collection. It's available now, but Nintendo has said it will have a limited physical and digital release until March 31, 2021.

Have You Played… Paunch?

3 years 7 months ago

Screenshot shows Bob, a huge, bald sumo squatting down and extending his arms outwards in a sort of confused, welcoming gesture.

Paunch

is tagged “Psychological Horror” and “Sexual Content” on Steam, and while this is wrong, it also couldn’t be more accurate. Two players take control of huge sumo wrestlers called Bob and fight to the death by flinging large rocks at each other. One can also opt to charge down the opposing player and lay them out with a solid hook to the chin. It is immediately arousing, yet disquieting.

Mistress of the lewd, Plumeria, is Fire Emblem Heroes' newest Mythic Hero

3 years 7 months ago

As if Fire Emblem Heroes didn't already get its fans hot under the collar with its expansive array of male and female stunners, the newest update to Nintendo's mobile battler teases more saucy antics with the arrival of its newest mythic hero: "Lewd Dream" Plumeria.

An original Fire Emblem Heroes character, Plumeria is a Dökkálfar who resides in Dökkálfheimr, where she reigns as the overseer of "lewd dreams." Despite her charming and gracious appearance, Plumeria seems to have developed a deep dislike of humans, going as far as to consider them vulgar and disgusting. Given her vocation, these views seem completely fair and understandable.

Cyberpunk 2077 devs backtrack on ‘no mandatory crunch' stance, report claims

3 years 7 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 screenshot.

For all their talk about not making staff work ‘crunch’ overtime on Cyberpunk 2077, it seems CD Projekt Red staff are facing a stretch of crunch ahead of the RPG’s November launch. A supposed internal CDPR e-mail passed to Bloomberg told the dev team they are now expected to work an extra day each week, which will be paid, while acknowledging that this is “in direct opposition to what we’ve said about crunch.”

Assassin's Creed Valhalla includes tattooed logo of AC Sisterhood fan movement

Ubisoft team members working on Valhalla reached out to the AC Sisterhood group to request the use of the logo.

The AC Sisterhood is a fan initiative created over the summer in the wake of the wave of sexual assault and misconduct allegations involving Assassin's Creed developer Ubisoft, and after reports of how the series had suffered from repeated high-level interference to minimise the role of multiple female main characters.

Someone should make a game about: the Isle of Rust

3 years 7 months ago

I used to live on an island. What I loved most about that temporary home was the very particular geography. The Outer Hebrides are flat and relatively barren, save for a few dark hills squatting on the horizon. There's a real mood to the place, and an uninterrupted horizon - somehow the sky appears bigger than anywhere else in the world. Probably because of the lack of trees. Everytime my grandad arrived at the airport from the mainland, he'd make the same comment on this absence - "It's quite bleak, isn't it?" It was hard to argue the point. Also unique to these Scottish isles (and the west coast of Ireland) is the "machair", which is Gaelic for a type of low lying grassy plains. Because of how exposed the land is there, sand continually blows ashore - swept up by great Atlantic gales - and so you get this habitat of flower blooms and abundantly rich insect and bird life, stretching up and behind the island's long coastlines.

And it's those great coasts and beaches that the isles are best known for. You could spend hours scouring the sands for lost treasures. One moment you would discover the venerable carcass of a dolphin or whale, hauled up onto the land by wild waves. Just along from that the ocean has spat out a different kind of carcass... some rusted ship engine, hoisted up onto a group of jagged rocks. It's a striking contrast. Decomposing machinery crashing against raw wilderness. The sublime sitting besides the mundane.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer will force six-day weeks leading up to launch

3 years 7 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has told employees it will require them to work six-day weeks until the game's November launch, breaking a previous promise not to force compulsory overtime to finish the project.

"Starting today, the entire studio is in overdrive," CD Projekt Red boss Adam Badowski told employees via email on Monday, as revealed by Bloomberg [paywall].

"I take it upon myself to receive the full backlash for the decision," Badowski continued. "I know this is in direct opposition to what we've said about crunch. It's also in direct opposition to what I personally grew to believe a while back - that crunch should never be the answer. But we've extended all other possible means of navigating the situation."

Save £300 on the LG CX OLED, our top 4K TV pick for gaming

3 years 7 months ago

When it came time to choose our top 4K TV for HDR gaming, there was only one real option: the LG CX OLED. It boasts impressive contrast, low input lag and pixel response times and support for the latest technologies - including the HDMI 2.1 standard that allows 4K 120Hz HDR gameplay. Today, the 55-inch CX has dropped by £300 to its lowest-ever price of £1399 - just in time for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Here's why we think this TV is so good, where to find it and how much cheaper it's likely to get.

First of all, let's cover where this deal is available. We've spotted the same £1399 price at three retailers so far: Amazon, Currys and John Lewis. While the first two may be the most obvious choices for most people, it's worth mentioning that John Lewis do offer a five year guarantee on their TVs, including the CX. You'll also get a free LG FN4 true wireless headphones with the CX from Currys or John Lewis, worth £99.

Anyway, here are links to the CX at each retailer:

Pokémon Go rolling back a couple of key lockdown bonuses

3 years 7 months ago

Pokémon Go will today adjust the various gameplay changes introduced back in March in the face of the global pandemic. Some are being removed, some are being maintained, and some will seemingly be made permanent.

Most noticeably, hatch distance will return to normal for eggs - meaning you'll need to walk the full 2km, 5km, 7km or 10km. This distance was halved back in the spring.

Eggs - or rather, their incubators - are a key source of income for Pokémon Go. On the upside, their current contents are currently of little interest to long-term players. On the downside, you only need another incubator-focused in-game event to roll around for this to suddenly change.

Cyberpunk 2077 Studio Head Responds to Mandatory Crunch Reports

3 years 7 months ago
CD Projekt Red Head of Studio Adam Badowski has responded to a Bloomberg report about mandatory crunch at the studio, saying the move was "one of the hardest decisions I've had to make", but noting that Cyberpunk 2077's developers will be "well compensated for every extra hour they put in." This follows a report yesterday, which contained an email from Badowski sent to CD Projekt Red staff. The reported email says that the studio will be enacting mandatory six-day workweeks in the run-up to Cyberpunk 2077's November release after "extending all other possible means of navigating the situation." CD Projekt Red had previously promised its employees that they wouldn't be forced to crunch on the game, in an interview with Kotaku in 2019. Badowski issued a statement in response to Bloomberg's reporting on Twitter. "These last 6 weeks are our final sprint on a project we've all spent much of our lives on. Something we care for deeply. The majority of the team understands that push," Badowski's statement reads.
