Rainbow Six Siege has a cyberpunk-y limited time event starting today

3 years 8 months ago

Rainbow Six Siege

is getting in on some 80s sci-fi action with its new limited time event, M.U.T.E. Protocol, kicking off today. Ubisoft’s tactical FPS has cyberpunked-up one of its Secure Area game mode maps, dropping players in as all manner of funky neon robots to attack or defend a Comm Tower. It’s not just cosmetic, though, as players will be able to use special futuristic powers to warp themselves through their tech, too.

Outriders: Monster Hunt Gameplay Revealed

3 years 8 months ago
Our IGN First for August is Outriders, the upcoming shooter RPG from People Can Fly. To kick things off, we thought we’d show some gameplay from a brand new aspect of the game: monster hunts. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/04/outriders-11-minutes-of-monster-hunt-co-op-gameplay-ign-first"] These side quests see you (and a group of co-op buddies, if you’d like to team up) track down and eliminate monsters in the world of Enoch. Hunts can be easily found while exploring combat zones; just keep an eye out for the half-eaten carcasses. From there you’ll be able to start the side quest and begin tracking your prey. Different areas provide different monsters. In the 11 minutes of gameplay above, you can see three hunts in action: Bigjaw, Moldfang, and the Oreyard Queen. These challenging optional battles don’t just pit you against the monster itself, but dozens and dozens of its underlings, too. Expect a tough battle, especially on the higher World Tier difficulty levels. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=outriders-ign-first&captions=true"] Hunts are just the first thing we’re showing off from Outriders. Across the month of August, we’ll be bringing you a variety of exclusive new looks at the game, focusing on previously unseen features and areas, so be sure to check back to IGN regularly. For more Outriders right now, check out our most recent hands-on preview. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Purslow is IGN's UK News and Entertainment Writer.

Injustice: Year Zero Reveals the Secret History of This Dark DC Universe

3 years 8 months ago
DC Comics has just announced Injustice: Year Zero, a digital-first prequel to the popular Injustice: Gods Among Us video game and its tie-in comic books. While DC's previous Injustice comics have explored the five years of history leading up to the events of the original game and then bridged the gap between that game and its sequel, Year Zero dives even further back in the timeline. This prequel series explores a new conflict set before the fateful day when Superman killed Joker. Subtitled "Fall of the Old Gods," Year Zero sheds light on this universe's version of the World War II-era Justice Society, even as it reveals what happens when the Joker manages to take control of the world's most powerful heroes in the present day. IGN can exclusively debut several pages from Injustice: Year Zero - Chapter 3, which feature Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Check them out in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=injustice-year-zero-exclusive-preview&captions=true"] Injustice: Year Zero is again written by Tom Taylor, with a rotating art team that includes Rogê Antônio, Cian Tormey, Rain Beredo and Wes Abbott and covers by Julian Totino Tedesco. The first three chapters are available to purchase now on Read DC, ComiXology and other digital comics retailers. Each chapter is priced at $.99, and a bundle of the first three chapters is also available for $2.49. The series will run for 14 chapters in total, with new installments releasing every Tuesday. “Year Zero isn't as morally grey as what comes after,” said Tom Taylor told The Hollywood Reporter. “This is Superman and Batman at the peak of their friendship.

FIFA 21: Multiple Changes Made to Reduce Trolling in Online Matches

3 years 8 months ago
FIFA 21 is making a number of tweaks to make online play a smoother experience, with less opportunity for trolling - including removing celebrations, making cinematics shorter, and more. EA Sports has explained that several decisions have been made based directly on community feedback, many of which focus specifically reducing the means for annoying opposing players. The Shush celebration (which became increasingly infamous among online FIFA players) and the A-OK gesture celebration (which has recently been added to lists of hate symbols) have both been removed from the game, and the length of goal celebrations has been reduced. Online, there will no longer be a walk back cinematic played after goals either. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=fifa-21-13-new-images&captions=true"] Similarly, waiting times for multiple set piece events have been drastically reduced from FIFA 20's 30 seconds. The new waiting times are:
  • Kick-off: 10 seconds
  • Throw-in: 12 seconds
  • Goal kick: 15 seconds
  • Corner kick: 15 seconds
  • Penalty kick: 15 seconds
  • Free kick: 20 seconds
  • Kick-in (Volta only): 15 seconds
Online, many animation sequences will be auto-skipped, such as when a player heads to fetch the ball for a throw-in, or the keeper walks to put the ball down before a goal kick. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/18/ea-sports-montage-trailer-ea-play-2020"] To stop a different kind of annoyance, EA Sports has also removed all ball collision from outfield players' hands, up to their elbow.

FIFA 21 Gameplay Trailer Showcases Agile Dribbling, Creative Runs, & More New Features

3 years 8 months ago

Another year, another FIFA, and as we edge closer to the launch of its next iteration, EA is showcasing some of the new features and mechanics players can look forward to in FIFA 21 in today’s gameplay trailer.

That includes a slicker, more accessible skill move mechanic that allows players to pull off dazzling tricks by holding the right shoulder button and manipulating the left analog stick.

Elsewhere, Creative Runs are an all-new feature that gives players the ability to take control of off-ball runs as opposed to leaving it down to the computer. In theory, that should mean you’re able to pull off more complicated plays according to your exact vision.

As you’ll see below, now by hitting L1 and then directing the right analog stick you’re off-the-ball running player will move in the direction you choose, where before it was random.

But you won’t have to do everything manually — FIFA 21’s AI has been updated so that computer-controlled players make smart runs and positional plays according to their real-life strengths and weaknesses.

Sergio Aguero, for example, will hold his run to beat the offside trap as opposed to continually running forward if the ball isn’t released; defenders like Virgil Van Dijk, meanwhile, position themselves more effectively to block shots in front of goals than midfielders and forwards.

We also get a look at the revised collision system, which is essentially the physics system that determines how the ball bounces off players in random situations. The idea is to make those more frantic moments inside the box feel more natural, and it does seem to perform well at first glance.

Finally, the manual headers feature and game modes such as competitor and gameplay rewind are briefly shown in action.

Valorant Battle Pass’ Act II Trailer Teases New Cosmetics

3 years 8 months ago

While Riot Games hasn’t been all that vocal about Valorant’s success since launching earlier this summer, the new tactical-meets-hero-shooter seems to be ticking along nicely. Following several small patches, its first wave of esports tournaments, and a bunch of new skins, it’s now moving into the second Act of its battle pass progression system.

Today, a new trailer teases what’s to come moving forward, and it appears as though Riot Games has been working overtime on new skins, buddies, and sprays for players to grind toward adding to their collections.

As with the previous act of the battle pass, all players will have free access to several tiers within each chapter, while a select few tiers will remain locked off to premium paying users. Valorant’s battle pass costs around $10, which is substantially cheaper than purchasing weapon skins individually.

Witcher 3 Magic Spells Mod Is New & Improved, Turns Geralt Into a Badass Warlock

3 years 8 months ago

There aren’t many games I can work up the enthusiasm to play more than once, honestly. But The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is different; it’s basically my digital happy place. And now, thanks to Nexus Mod user menschfeind13’s new and improved Magic Spells mod, there’s more reason than ever to experience the epic saga all over again.

Magic Spells has actually been out for a while, but this latest version enhances its performance and compatibility. Not only is it now better suited to merging with other mods, but there’s a new hotkey menu feature and extra customization options.

Essentially, Magic Spells turns Geralt into Warlock. With the mod installed, he now has access to 25 different items and trophies that offer a whole new range of offensive spells in addition to his standard Signs.

As you’ll see in the tutorial video below, each of the animations has been crafted to a very high standard and their effects add a whole new layer to the combat experience.

Spellbreak to Support Full Cross-Platform Play at Launch

3 years 8 months ago

Developer Proletariat’s magic-focused battle royale title, Spellbreak, has been in beta for some time, but it’s slowly edging toward a full launch. Today, the studio has announced that when it’s ready, Spellbreak will be one of the first titles on the market to support cross-progression across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch at launch.

Regardless of which platform players boot up to play a game, their Spellbreak account will allow them to maintain their game progression, customizations, and stats. Players will also be able to use their account to easily find friends and create cross-platform squads.

Seth Sivak, CEO of Proletariat, Inc explained in a statement:

“Breaking new ground in multiplayer titles has been Proletariat’s mission since the beginning. Introducing cross-progression means you can play Spellbreak however you want, with whomever you want, and always ensure your progress in-game follows you to whatever platform you’re playing on. If you’ve leveled up to Master Toxicologist on your PlayStation 4, all of the time you have invested is still with you if you log-in to your game on PC, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.”

There’s a new trailer to celebrate today’s announcement, too:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 5 Content Details

3 years 8 months ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 5 arrives tomorrow, August 5. While there are a smattering of content offerings coming across the board, some of the biggest chunks of change are slamming into Warzone. The Acropolis National Arena (the big stadium!) in Warzone is poised to become a huge theater of battle, whether you're blasting it out in the stands or getting wild in the parking structure, it's a big new battlezone.

The train station is also getting some interior elements. Oh, and there's a giant freight train that rolls through the zone now so expect that to be an absolutely insane highlight for battle royale action. For a full list of the extensive changes coming to Warzone, check out the official posting here.

Four new multiplayer maps are coming to standard Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer. Livestock lets you take Gunfight down on the farm with hay bales and scattered tractors providing cover. Don't worry, all the farm animals are safe. Petrov Oil Rig, Suldal Harbor, and Verdansk International Airport flesh out the new environment offerings.

Cover Reveal – Watch Dogs: Legion

3 years 8 months ago

Ubisoft recently showed off more of its upcoming Watch Dogs: Legion, shining the spotlight on a game that had been lurking in the shadows. We got to play it for several hours, and shared some of our thoughts and impressions on the open-world action. As it turns out, that was only a small part of the story. In the next issue of Game Informer, we take a deeper dive into the systems that make the game possible – and memorable – with insights from the team at Ubisoft Toronto.

The big twist with Legion is that nearly everyone in the open world can be recruited to join your team, from spies and police officers to beekeepers, bartenders, and barbers. Not everyone has a skillset that lends itself to helping DedSec free London from the grip of private-security firm Albion, but figuring out what each person can bring to the fight is half the fun. Over the course of 14 pages, we explore how players will be able to recruit everyone by exploiting their fully modeled routines, transforming them from your run-of-the-mill NPCs to your secret weapons against tyranny in this near-future nightmare.

Another WipEout-looking futuristic racer is coming next month

3 years 8 months ago

It's been a while since we've heard about Pacer, but it seems like it's on track to release next month.

In case you missed the initial announcement, Pacer is one of a long line of futuristic racers that is carrying on the legacy of games like WipEout and F-Zero. Developed by R8 Games, Pacer will allow for solo play, as well as support online matches for up to 10 players.

It's set in 2075 where anti-gravity motorsports are king, and will feature tracks from CoLD SToRAGE as well as a number of other electronica artists. Five vehicles are in, with customization options for each, alongside of 14 tracks with classic variants like night, mirror and reverse tracks. It'll also boast eight modes, including a "battle royale inspired" gametype, as well as a campaign.

It all sounds good on paper! Hopefully the physics are on point and it's fun to play. Pacer is out on September 17 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Devolver has killed Carrion's suggestive Switch icon

3 years 8 months ago

Devolver is known for its (sometimes cloying) irreverence, but this time they took it too far according to a bunch of Switch users.

For those of you who aren't in the know, Switch icons are a big deal. At least, according to a subset of the Switch community. Fans have campaigned to get ugly icons "fixed" to newer, better ones for the past several years, but this case is by far the most entertaining in recent memory.

Carrion, the gross Mature-rated game about eating people and growing into an unstoppable organic killing machine, had an appropriately gross icon. But people weren't having it! So after roughly two weeks, Devolver acquiesced and changed it from amazing fake genitalia to the game's standard logo (which you can view below).

I'm kind of amazed Devolver was able to get away with it in the first place, but then again the eShop is getting eroge now, so times are changing!

Legendary Sega arcade in Akihabara to close later this month

3 years 8 months ago

One of the few remaining landmark arcade centres has announced that it will be closing its doors at the end of the month. Sega Building 2, located in Akihabara, Japan, will hit the lights for the last time on August 30, ending a 17-year run of public entertainment.

Based in the heart of the technology-loving Akihabara neighbourhood, Sega Building 2 opened in 2003 under the name "Akihabara Kigo" and immediately welcomed a slew of players with its wide variety of arcade games, pachinko machine and UFO grabbers. As captivating on the outside as it is on the inside, Sega Building 2 has for years caught the attention of passers-by with huge, colourful murals of popular anime and video game characters, as you can see in these photos from @kaztsu.

Hitman 2, Greedfall lead August's PlayStation Now additions

3 years 8 months ago

Sony has detailed a bumper crop of on-demand additions heading to its PlayStation Now subscription service in August, including Hitman 2, Greedfall, and Dead Cells.

Developer IO Interactive's globe-hopping stealth sequel Hitman 2 is well worth a punt (Eurogamer called it a "one of the smartest stealth experiences out there" in its 2018 review), as is Motion Twin's critically acclaimed rogue-like platformer Dead Cells. This, if you're unfamiliar, pits players against the brutally tough denizens of an ever-shifting, labyrinthine castle in an endless orgy of crunchy combat and exploratory platform action.

There's also a lot to like about developer Spider's gorgeously wrought historical action-RPG Greedfall, which packs an enjoyable heap of characters, classes, and side-quests into an experience reminiscent of BioWare's much-loved genre efforts. It's a little rough-around-the-edges, and some of its systems undoubtedly feel underdeveloped, but its brave New World of island adventure is still an intriguing, engaging place to explore.

Call of Duty: Warzone gets mini royale mode as the stadium and train station are revamped

3 years 8 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone gets a mini royale mode tomorrow with the launch of Season 5.

Mini royale is described as short and sweet battle royale matches. The mode lowers the number of players sent into the map, but quickens the experience. So, only the first and last five minutes of a normal battle royale game exist. This means rapid deployment, constant movement and lots of kills.

Other new modes set to hit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone include Bare Bones. This is a rotation of TDM, Domination, HQ, Hardpoint and Kill Confirmed with no killstreaks, no field upgrades and no perks. Elsewhere, SnD Double Down (12v12) is coming to Modern Warfare tomorrow.

The Touryst arrives on Xbox One and PC - and it's an excellent port

3 years 8 months ago

Back in December 2019, Shin'en Multimedia wowed us with a unique Switch exclusive: The Touryst. Defined by a stunning voxelised engine with a beautiful post-process pipeline, The Touryst looked like nothing we'd really seen before and now it is available to play on Xbox One, Xbox One X and PC, arriving day one on Game Pass. I highly recommend that you check it out.

The idea behind The Touryst is extremely straightforward - it's an exploration-based adventure that has you travelling between various islands, solving mysteries that lie beneath the surface. What's wonderful about the game is the sense of discovery and exploration. At no point does The Touryst tell you what to do, or bring up a large pointer ordering you where to go. With that in mind, figuring out what the game expects from you is half the fun.

And it's all delivered with that remarkable engine. Yes, the aesthetic is 'voxelised' but everything is still built from triangles, though the game worlds themselves are built using a tool known as MagicaVoxel. This makes it very easy to craft environments, which are then given a visual boost via Maya and injected into the game. A voxel-like aesthetic typically brings Minecraft to mind, and while The Touryst has a similar simplicity, the islands can be rich and dense in detail. The deferred lighting system is simply sublime with a wonderful dynamic range.

Fae Tactics is a fiddly homage to Final Fantasy Tactics

3 years 8 months ago

Fae Tactics

is turn-based wizard whacking in the same vein as the much-beloved Final Fantasy Tactics series, which is one of the few classic FF spin-offs that has somehow managed to bypass coming to PC throughout its long, if slightly spotty history. It’s effectively to Final Fantasy Tactics what Wargroove was to aggrieved Advance Wars fans – a game which scratches that nostalgic, pixellated tactics itch while bringing it up to date for modern PC players.

As a result, Fae Tactics taps into a very specific brand of tactical role-playing, and it does loads of interesting things that I’m very much on board with. Sadly, it’s also one that I don’t have a lot patience for. It’s not just that its fights are a little too long and maybe a touch too repetitive for my tastes. It’s also because I’ve tripped over so many rules during my time with it that I feel like I’m being asked to perform ballet in the toy-strewn debris of a toddler’s bedroom.

This incredible Mercy cosplay made my heart flutter

3 years 8 months ago

Cosplayer Zibartas is someone who will never run out of light. His latest creation is Mercy’s wings from Overwatch. They’re built out of steel and aluminium, glow with the perfect amount of heavenly light, and unfurl like he’s just activated an ultimate. There are very few moments of true beauty in the world at the moment, but I’d argue that seeing these snake out like a visit from an angel is one of them. I’d hug him if it weren’t physically impossible.

Cyberpunk 2077's gangsters are all graphic design afficionados

3 years 8 months ago

A screenshot from Cyberpunk 2077 of an elegant woman dressed for a night out. She is standing at a bar, the room behind her is lit in pink and blue. She is wearing a silver sequin dress with a deep vee cut down the front, and a jacket with a blue and purple fur collar

Following on from the recent release of The World Of Cyberpunk 2077 last week (it’s a big fancy book revealing some delicious Cyberpunky secrets prior to Cyberpunk 2077‘s release in November), CD Projekt has spaffed a load of Gangs Of Night City posters onto Displate. New merch isn’t the sort of thing I pay much attention to, normally. But in this case, it’s given us some more details of the gangs you’ll run into when making your first-person-action-RPG way around Night City.

More importantly, in my mind at least, it has laid out their wares in a way that lets me decide which ones I am clearly going to support, and which ones I will terminate with extreme prejudice. These decisions are based entirely on their logos, but they are correct decisions nonetheless.

You can pet and snuggle the cats in Assassin's Creed Valhalla

When Assassin’s Creed Valhalla releases this November, it will put players in the shoes of Eivor – a big, tough Viking assassin, fully prepared to slaughter the English. Now, if that’s not quite the selling point you were after, it might please you to know that this burly warrior will also be able to pet and snuggle all the cats they come across on their journey, too.

Well, it certainly isn’t going to make me any less likely to buy the game.
