Spider-Man is a PlayStation exclusive in Marvel's Avengers

3 years 7 months ago

[Update: In a statement to IGN, Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos said that Spider-Man "is the only character that we are doing that way." He added that this particular PlayStation exclusivity deal was a "unique opportunity for us because of the relationship that PlayStation and Marvel have."]

In a ridiculous console exclusivity moment, Sony confirmed this morning that Spider-Man will be a PlayStation-exclusive character in Marvel's Avengers when he joins the playable cast in "early 2021."

We don't know what he'll look like – expect a "Crystal Dynamics take on Spider-Man" with classic inspirations – but he'll "debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel's Avengers." As with other post-launch characters, Spider-Man will be a free download.

Wild news for a game that many of us are, at best, on the fence about. I'm glad there's a beta.

As for the wall-crawler himself, Insomniac's rendition of Spider-Man will be a tough act to follow, and I feel like Crystal Dynamics will be hesitant to show him in Avengers until it's feeling super confident.

"When he's arcing through the air on his web line, we want you to feel graceful and light, and be able to utilize a variety of web configurations and gadgets to enhance your traversal," according to lead combat designer Vince Napoli. They're aiming for a seamless transition "from navigation to combat."

I can't help but wonder what else Sony might be eyeing for PlayStation 5's first few months.

New Animal Crossing: New Horizons Seasonal Items Now Available

3 years 7 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' second summer update has arrived, adding dreaming, save backups, a weekly summer fireworks show, and more to the popular Switch life sim. That's not all that's new in the game right now, however; the Nook Shopping catalog has also added some new items to its seasonal collection.

Three new limited-time items are now available to order: the rodeo-style springy ride-on, the Hikoboshi outfit, and the Orihime outfit. You can find these listed under the Seasonal tab in the Nook Shopping terminal, and each one will be available through August 31. The former costs 2,000 bells, while the latter two are each 2,500.

On top of the new seasonal items, August brings a handful of new fish and bugs to catch in the game. Those in the Northern Hemisphere can now reel in moray eels, rays, and soft-shelled turtles--among other critters--from the ocean and river. This month also marks the last chance for Northern Hemisphere players to catch various beetles and other summer insects. You can learn more in our fish guide and bug guide.

Capcom Enjoys Strongest First-Quarter Ever Amid Pandemic

3 years 7 months ago

Many countries might be slipping into a recession caused by the ongoing coronavirus crisis, but some in the video game space are enjoying record revenue and profits. Recently, Capcom announced that it had its most successful first-quarter to a year--that is, the three-month period from March to June--ever in 2020.

According to the press release, these numbers were driven by impressive sales for catalog titles Monster Hunter World: Iceborne and the Resident Evil 2 remake. The release of the Resident Evil 3 remake also drew a strong response. As previously announced, this period brought lifetime sales of the Resident Evil franchise to over 100 million units for the first time.

Not all aspects of Capcom's business were quite as rosy, however. Net sales for the company's arcade operations were down more than 50% from last year due to closures caused by COVID-19, and its amusement equipment numbers were down 20% as well. Overall, net sales went up 32.2%, and the company's operating income increased 39.1% year-over-year. No word yet on how much Zenny that translates to.

After PS5 News, Xbox Cheekily Highlights Series X's Backwards Compatibility For All Controllers

3 years 7 months ago

Controllers are expensive, especially if you're trying to buy one for each of your friends for couch co-op. Well, if you're concerned about that, Xbox UK would like to reiterate some good news: the Xbox Series X is backward compatible with all Xbox One controllers, including the standard and Xbox Elite models.

This announcement would seem to be a cheeky response to the recent news that Sony's upcoming PS5 will not allow players to use their old DualShock 4s for next-generation games, instead requiring them to buy the new DualSense. According to the announcement on the PlayStation blog, this is due to the features that the DualSense will bring to the experience, particularly haptic feedback. However, the DualShock 4 can be used to play PS4 games on PS5.

New Pokemon Sword And Shield Max Raid Event Now Live

3 years 7 months ago

A new Max Raid event has begun in Pokemon Sword and Shield. All month long, Water- and Ground-type Pokemon will appear more frequently in Max Raid battles across both versions, and you'll have a chance to earn Pearls and other valuable items from the Raids.

Among the Pokemon you'll be able to encounter are Gigantamax Drednaw and Sandaconda. Since you normally can't teach Pokemon to Gigantamax unless you own the Isle of Armor expansion, this is another chance to add these G-Max monsters to your collection, especially if you missed them during previous events. You'll also be able to encounter Gastrodon, Milotic, Hippowdon, Quagsire, and their pre-evolved forms in Max Raids.

Additionally, successfully clearing the Raids will net you some valuable items. Defeat one of the featured Water Pokemon and you'll have a chance to earn Pearls and Big Pearls, while the Ground Pokemon may drop Stardust and Star Pieces. You'll also have a chance to get Rare Candies, Bottle Caps, and Sitrus Berries on top of the usual assortment of rewards.

Scalpers Are Already Selling The Analogue Pocket At Ridiculous Prices

3 years 7 months ago

The retro handheld Analogue Pocket pre-orders began today, but they didn't last. Just 16 minutes after the sales went live, Analogue issued a statement via Twitter that the stock had sold out. It promised to produce more and "do our best to meet demand during this unfortunate global state of affairs."

Many people experienced issues with confirming their pre-order at the shipping phase, including GameSpot staff. Actor Elijah Wood tweeted that he experienced the same issue. You can sign up through the Analogue store for notifications when the item gets restocked. The Analogue Pocket won't begin shipping until May 2021.

Not surprisingly, online auction site Ebay is already hosting several listings for those looking to flip the device at a profit. The listings often base the price in the $500-$600 range, a huge increase from its base $200 price. Given that Analogue has already stated plans to restock, you're probably better off waiting rather than paying a 300% markup.

Delisted Xbox 360 Games Like Silent Hill Are Now Back In The Xbox One Store

3 years 7 months ago

Some eagle-eyed Xbox fans have noticed a strange quirk on the Xbox One store. Several Xbox 360 games that were previously delisted are now available for purchase on Xbox One, including Silent Hill: Downpour, Deadly Premonition, and Tom Clancy's HAWX. Several racing games also make the list: Dirt 3, Fuel, Grid 2, and Midnight Club LA.

These Xbox 360 games are playable on the Xbox One thanks to that platform's limited backward compatibility, which the Xbox Series X will share. It's not clear why exactly these games are available now, but it could have something to do with Microsoft preparing the Xbox store for the upcoming Xbox Series X. According to Reddit users, purchasing these games only allows you to play them on Xbox One, not Xbox 360.

Delisted games are an unfortunately common phenomenon due to rights expiring and the like, particularly when it comes to licensed music. On social media, players have reported that some of these relisted games have become unavailable again, so if you want to pick up one of these games, time is of the essence.

Microsoft details Xbox's "faster, safer and easier" store redesign

3 years 7 months ago

Microsoft has offered a look at its revamped and redesigned digital store for Xbox, which will be made available to at least some of those users signed up to its Insiders testing programme starting this Wednesday, 5th August.

The redesign is being referred to as the "all-new Microsoft Store on Xbox" (that non-specificity supporting earlier reports that no radical UI overhaul is planned for the next-gen Xbox Series X), and Microsoft calls it "faster, safer and easier" in its announcement post.

On the faster front, Microsoft says the store now loads in under two seconds on consoles, and offers "greatly improved" browsing performance.

We upgraded PS4 Pro with an 8TB SSD: can we make a better console?

3 years 7 months ago

Way back in 2013, the idea of upgrading a PlayStation 4 with solid-state storage was an option - but not a realistic one when the cost per gig was so prohibitively expensive. Today though, SATA-based SSDs are more affordable and as developers push the hard drive harder, loading times and streaming issues are more prevalent. We've been asked to revisit SSD performance for PS4 for some time - and to do so, we've deployed a nuclear option: Samsung's new 870 QVO SSD. To test PS4 SSD performance to its ultimate potential, we effectively have an eight terabyte console. Even factoring in reserved space, we should be getting an order of magnitude more storage than the 825GB PlayStation 5.

To put the drive more fully through its paces, we opted to install it in PlayStation 4 Pro where its SATA-3 interface could perhaps offer more bandwidth and where the faster 2.13GHz AMD Jaguar CPU cores should crunch through compressed data far more quickly. It's the best way possible to enhance the console - but what advantages does it actually deliver? Can we address the long load times of games like The Witcher 3? Can we mitigate the ugly pop-in issues in Final Fantasy 7 Remake? And crucially, what's the difference between running this beast as a USB add-on drive as opposed to using it to replace the internal stock hard drive? These are the questions we've been asked over the months and now we've got some answers.

Spider-Man Coming To Avengers As PlayStation Exclusive

3 years 7 months ago

Marvel's Avengers will follow a core group of heroes – Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor – when it launches on September 4. However, the game is also getting free DLC heroes as time goes on (like the recently revealed Hawkeye). Today, developer Crystal Dynamics announced a major new addition to the roster.

In a post on PlayStation Blog, Crystal Dynamics associate art director Jeff Adams announced that Spider-Man will be coming to Avengers in early 2021. The hero will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Also worth noting is that Adam's says this version of the web-slinger is "our own Crystal Dynamics take on Spider-Man," so don't expect any direct ties to Insomniac's acclaimed incarnation. The PS Blog post has much more information on Crystal Dynamics' approach to this legendary figure.

For more on Avengers, you can read our in-depth preview, and learn about the recent beta for the game.

Deathmatch Is Coming To Valorant This Week

3 years 7 months ago

Act II comes to Valorant this week, and there's a lot to talk about. Obviously a new Act comes with a new battlepass full of cosmetics to unlock. There's also a new Glitchpop skin set that's full of neon and spark, so that's pretty cool too. But perhaps the most intriguing development is the addition of a new game mode - Deathmatch. Free-for-all deathmatch allows 10 players to go at it with no abilities and infinite cash, so all guns are available.

This mode is all about gunplay and encourages plenty of action as players fight to be the first to 30 kills or the most kills at the 6 minute mark. Players drop health packs, UAV pings keep campers from being safe, and yes, respawning is a thing in this game mode. Since we're a while after launch, I'm wondering if the Valorant playerbase will peel off from the tactical play they've been mastering to blow off some steam between big matches - or if an entire new segment will be interested in this mode.

The Monday Papers

Mondays are for hoping your new graphics card arrives, seen as your old one got burgled last week. I’m fine! It’s fine! Burglar: caught. Videogames: written about. Here’s the best writing from the last week.

For UpperCut, Grace Curtis spoiled Life Sim games forever. She’s managed to describe the listlessness that crept into my Stardew Valley farm so eloquently that the prospect of ever booting up something similar now fills me with dread. Thanks, Curtis.

Nintendo's Major Franchises: Tracking the Years Since New Entries

3 years 7 months ago
Nintendo has amassed what is inarguably the most storied collection of video game franchises. Staple series like Mario and Zelda have kept fans invested in the Nintendo ecosystem for decades, while the company's hardware innovations and more recent series like Splatoon continue to attract new fans. Its catalogue is vast and its characters beloved, which comes with an inevitable downside: certain franchises get left behind, leaving passionate fan bases waiting (often begging) for new releases. To gain a better understanding of Nintendo's first-party output, we've created the list below, which shows how long it's been since Nintendo has released an original, mainline entry in 34 of its biggest franchises. (This list measures the time between original, mainline releases only — if a spinoff or remake was released more recently, it's noted with an asterisk (*). Time elapsed figures are based on U.S. release dates, except where noted, and are recorded as of August 2020. The list begins with Nintendo's most recent releases and is broken up into three generation-based groups.) The Sims Spark’d Episode 3: Head-to-Head Competition & More Drama

3 years 7 months ago

Episode 3 of The Sims Spark’d was a dramatic addition to the series with members of Team Cowplant and Team Llama having to compete one-on-one. Team FreezerBunny was sent home after the first episode while Team Gnome was eliminated in the second installment. This left only the two teams, Cowplant and Llama, to try for the $100,000 prize.

Each member of one team must go against the opposite team member that was assigned the same role (e.g. Xmiramira goes against Littlesiha in this episode since they are both character designers).

The first part of the challenge featured the Sim designers and a theme of gender fluidity. Xmiramira’s Sims were diverse enough to win the judges’ majority vote, with Littlesiha’s coming in close behind.

The builders, Doctor Ashley and Simlicy, then competed against one another to create an unconventional build based off of a mode of transportation. While Simlicy’s bus idea was cute and incredibly detailed on the interior, Doctor Ashley’s unique time machine idea won the majority vote.

Verdansk Stadium Opens & the Train Arrives in New Modern Warfare Season 5 Trailer

3 years 7 months ago

A new final trailer has been released for Season 5 of Modern Warfare and Warzone, showing off the new multiplayer maps and how Verdansk will change dramatically.

The Warzone changes are the most notable, with the stadium roof coming off to add a brand new area to the map and a train careering through the map.

What exactly you find inside the stadium isn’t quite clear in the Season 5 trailer, but there seems to be multiple rooms and levels to the location.

Also, the train seems to have guns attached and you can ride on top of it. However, it’s not clear exactly how the train’s arrival will work. Will it be a new event to be mixed in with the Fire Sale, Jailbreak, and Supply Choppers, or will it be something that’s in every single game. We’ll have to wait until Season 5 begins to find out.

If you look carefully, it also seems like there’ll be a zipline added so that you can get from the bottom to the top of Prison easily, and it may come to other parts of the map, such as the tall buildings in Downtown.

Elsewhere, the Season 5 trailer revealed the new maps that will be coming to Modern Warfare’s multiplayer as part of the update. They are:

Ghost of Tsushima’s Best Moments Are the Chill Ones

3 years 7 months ago

Ghost of Tsushima has turned out to be quite an incredible open-world action game. The latest title from the Infamous dev team does a fantastic job of letting players live out their samurai fantasies on the big ol’ gorgeous island of Tsushima.

You can talk a lot about how fun the game’s combat is, thanks to a variety of stances to deal with different types of enemies, an abundance of skill trees, and just how dang satisfying it is to slice an enemy with Jin’s blade.

Sure, burning down Mongol-infested bases and slicing these dudes in half is a good time and all, but its combat doesn’t do anything wildly different when compared to other samurai ninja action games such as Sekiro. Still, there’s something else about Ghost of Tsushima that I love even more.

It’s the quiet moments in Ghost of Tsushima that I appreciate the most, and also how they’re implemented into side missions and exploration. It turns out that this game is also extremely entertaining even when you’re not engaging in combat.

How Final Fantasy XI Has Slowly Reinvented Itself & Could Be Gearing up for a Second Act

3 years 7 months ago

To an outsider, Final Fantasy XI looked like it had one foot in the coffin back in 2015 when Rhapsodies of Vana’diel was announced and support for the PS2 and Xbox 360 versions of the game came to an end.

The monthly subscription was still active, and it was fair to assume that Square Enix was perhaps trying to squeeze a little more profit out of the old MMORPG and deliver a proper send-off for the loyal fans that were still playing on PC at least.

In the five years since, though, rather than slowly back away from Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix has appeared to be investing even more time and resources to making Final Fantasy XI an appealing game not only to current players but also returning and new players too.

It’s tough to teach an old dog new tricks, and that can be said of Final Fantasy XI. It has nearly two decades worth of content, much of which is still relevant. This is incredible for the active player but can be extremely overwhelming for a new player.

Final Fantasy is too entrenched to completely overhaul the way it onboards new players but, it has evolved considerably for better or worse to try and get first-time players up to speed on this incredibly dense game.

Colourful Koopa Troopa variants coming to Mario Tennis Aces

3 years 7 months ago

It's been a minute since we heard any news regarding Mario Tennis Aces, but given the scorching weather we're experiencing right now, it seems fitting that Nintendo is hoping players will be getting back out on the digital courts this month.

Players participating in August's online tournament will automatically unlock a colourful selection of Koopa Troopas and Koopa Paratroopers. The unfortunately titled Yoshi's Ring-Shot challenge also returns for the summer, and will be offering up completion rewards in the form of blue, red, and yellow Yoshis. All of these characters have been rewards previously, but if you missed out first time around, here's a fresh opportunity.

Originally released in June 2018, Mario Tennis Aces sees a wide variety of characters from the Super Mario Bros. universe take to the court for entertaining - and somewhat silly - tennis matches. Hardly a professional simulation, Mario Tennis Aces is a fun and friendly arcade game that features a selection of physics-defying trick shots and racquet-destroying Specials.

Mario Tennis Aces is available now on Nintendo Switch.

Ghost of Tsushima celebrates third week on top of the UK Charts

3 years 7 months ago

Sucker Punch's PS4 smash hit Ghost of Tsushima has retained its place atop of the UK Charts, making it a third week at number one for the open-world samurai epic.

Ghost of Tsushima
managed to hold off continued sales from Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as the launch of THQ Nordic's Destroy All Humans! with the sci-fi remaster debuting at number three. Also appearing in the Top Ten this week is Easy Day Studios' sandbox skating title Skater XL, which finally saw release on PC and consoles after spending an extended period of time in Early Access.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, Koei Tecmo's anime RPG Fairy Tail debuted at number 15, while DotEmu's Streets of Rage 4 made its long-awaited physical release, landing one step ahead at number 14. The brawler sequel has been available to purchase digitally since its launch back in April, thus its physical numbers are understandably lower than expected.

Wonderful 101 Remastered just got a new patch that 'allows higher score totals'

3 years 7 months ago

The Wonderful 101 got a new lease on life this past May in remastered form, but it seems as if Platinum is still tweaking the game ever so slightly.

It's a blink and you'll miss it moment, but Platinum recently put up the patch notes for the remastered edition's 1.0.2 update, which brings a few welcome upgrades to the table. First up: the UI. Minigames have gotten a facelift, with better menus: likely now that Platinum has more time to sit back and tweak little quality of life things after doing the heavy lifting of moving the base game off of the Wii U.

But the best part of the update is easily the improvement to the scoring system, which now allows higher score totals for "certain stages." You mean my near-perfect rating wasn't already near-perfect?! You can find the full rundown of the brief patch notes below.

Thankfully Platinum shared this info openly: a lot of games obscure their patch notes so it's tough to figure out what was actually changed.
