Old World review (early access)

3 years 10 months ago

Old World has been developed by a clutch of Civilization vets. So it’s hardly a surprise that, at a glance, it appears to be a very familiar strategy epic. You’ve got your usual slate of hexagons, littered with 100 foot tall soldiers and crabs the size of mountains. You’ve got your turn-by-turn freestyle jazz remix of ancient history, a revisionist mess in which the Romans can build the pyramids and the Babylonians can take their chances with Jesus. But there is one critical difference between this game and others like it – you can have a pet monkey.

Give a falcon a beard, VR goggles, and make it fight colonial robots

3 years 10 months ago

We previously posted about Falcon Age on its release onto the Epic Store last year, but we didn’t follow up on it, and that’s a shame because although I suppose it’s technically an action-adventure, I would prefer to call it a first-person tactical bird game.

You are one of the native population of a planet colonised by an interplanetary corporation, using advanced robots and drones to suppress resistance and industrialise your home planet, strip-mining it for resources. But there are few problems that can’t be solved by throwing a bird at it. Especially if that bird is wearing, e.g., a cowboy hat.

Valorant review

3 years 10 months ago

A screenshot of Valorant.

Valorant

is Riot’s newfangled hybrid of CS:GO and Overwatch, where teams of five run around shooting very deadly weapons while deploying character-based abilities. It’s very, very similar to CS:GO, right down to the round structure and individual weapons. If you’ve ever defused a bomb in Counter-Strike, there’s a good chance you’ll already be a crack shot here. It’s basically the same, but with more mind games and novel situations thanks to those abilities.

It’s a great game, but playing by myself makes me miserable far more often than it makes me happy.

3 years 10 months ago

Best Sniper in Warzone

So the question is: which sniper rifle do you use for that perfect headshot?

Our Best Sniper in Warzone guide will walk you through the three snipers on offer in Modern Warfare’s Battle Royale mode. We’ll go over the stats of each one, before talking about how each sniper stacks against the others.

Best LMG in Warzone [Season 3]: a guide to LMGs in Modern Warfare

3 years 10 months ago

Best LMG in Warzone

The best LMGs offer a very special collection of traits that few other weapons in Warzone can match. High DPS and large magazines allow you to drop entire teams quickly, while the excellent damage dropoff values and low recoil of certain LMGs give you an extremely potent answer to long-range encounters.

Our Best LMG in Warzone guide will not only walk you through the stats of each LMG, but also discuss the place of each LMG in the current Warzone meta.

The Last of Us Part II Trailer Is Brutal and Sweet at The Same Time

3 years 10 months ago

Today Sony Interactive Entertainment and Naughty Dog released a new trailer of The Last of Us Part II.

The trailer is actually an extended version of the commercial that has been airing for a couple of days.

Cinematic in nature, it certainly shows Ellie’s turmoil and conveys the brutality of the world of the game in a way that you rarely see in a video like this.

You can enjoy it below. Personally, there’s an element to it that I would possibly consider slightly spoilerish, so watch at your own risk.

If you want to see more, you can check out the new gameplay from a few days ago. We also learned that a new official podcast is also coming, and will launch on June 9.

Sony Interactive Entertainment recently reopened digital pre-orders for the game on the PlayStation Network. The game is ready and has “gone gold” ahead of its launch.

Sega Game Gear Micro Announced, Tiny-Handed Gamers Rejoice

3 years 10 months ago

Miniaturized consoles are all the rage, and now Sega has announced a mini handheld modeled after its Game Gear system. The Game Gear Micro is very tiny, even by portable system standards, and will launch this fall in Japan.

Unlike many other retro consoles, though, the Game Gear Micro will actually launch in four color variations, each with a different selection of four games. Each one will cost 4,980 yen (about $45 USD). You can find the game line-ups and color variations below. It will launch on October 6, to mark the 30th anniversary.

The console itself is tiny--80mm by 43mm by 20mm--and a trailer showing hands holding the device make it appear comically small. But Sega is also also selling a combo pack with all four consoles and a snap-on magnifier for the itty-bitty screen. No release has been announced for the West.

Sega is turning 60 so let's name our favorite Sega games

3 years 10 months ago

I remember the console wars of the early '90s quite well. Those commercials and the ads in magazines, all trying to convince the youths of the world that either Sega or Nintendo was better than its competitor. We were a Nintendo household right up until the release of the PlayStation. None of my friends owned a Sega Genesis. In fact, for many years, my only interaction with the brand was through Madden Tournaments at the local Boys & Girls Club and a friend of mine who had the old Sega Master System. We played a lot of Thunder Blade on that thing.

For me, the distant relationship I had with Sega ended when I got a Dreamcast and fell head over heels for it. It was a short-lived romance but it did convince me to go back and see all the Sega games I'd missed over the years. And wouldn't you know, Sega seemed happy to fulfill that desire by releasing compilations of its Genesis titles on every console released after the Dreamcast died.

Looking back at the history of Sega games is appropriate today as June 3 is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the company. Its first successful game was the arcade hit Periscope. Its first console was the SG-1000, a name you could only get away with in the '80s. Today, it reigns as one of the most popular game developers out of Japan, and with its acquisition of Atlus in 2013, it owns one of the biggest JRPG franchises in the world.

I love the year or so I spent with my Dreamcast, but honestly, my favorite games Sega put out came long after that console was put out to pasture. So to mark this 60th anniversary for one of gaming's most prolific publishers, I asked Destructoid contributors to share their favorite Sega games.

Here's another look at Godfall, that PC and PS5 game you probably forgot about

3 years 10 months ago

Godfall looks like something that a 15-year-old boy in the '90s would dream up after staying up all night watching Skeleton Warriors; and I'm kind of here for it?

In case you forgot, developer Counterplay Games and publisher Gearbox teased the existence of Godfall late last year at The Game Awards. Confirmed for PC (Epic Games Store) and PS5, it's described as a "looter slasher" and has an aesthetic I can only describe as "teen gold fantasy." Well we got a new brief look at the game this week, in the form of "Silvermane," a character that has a lion look and silver hair. Yep, "Silvermane" checks out.

As the below trailer indicates, Godfall is still slated for a "holiday 2020" release. So far, all of this looks very "launch PS5 game," but sometimes, I'm into checking out rough launch titles (Orphen: Scion of Sorcery, anyone?).

Behold the cataclysmic confrontation of Sega Shiro and Sega Hatan Shiro

3 years 10 months ago

Sega has released a third entry in its new series of "Sega Shiro" commercials, introducing fans worldwide to the new face of the Sega brand. When last we saw our retro-lovin' hero, he had been confronted in the schoolyard by the mysterious "Sega Hatan Shiro", who had arrived on Earth with the intention of destroying Sega itself.

In the two-minute epic, Sega Shiro attempts to fight off Sega Hatan Shiro, but the masked man is simply too powerful. It seems all the Master System 3D Glasses in the world wouldn't be enough to stop this guy. Undaunted, and with the power of a million unsold 32X units coursing through his veins, Sega Shiro tightens his Karate gi and successfully defeats Sega Hatan Shiro, knocking off his mysterious opponent's mask in the process.

The Academy: The First Riddle is described as 'Harry Potter meets Professor Layton'

3 years 10 months ago

You don't hear the words "Harry Potter and Professor Layton" thrown around very often, but usually it's because of WB's crack legal team protecting the former at any cost.

Announced by Pine Studio, The Academy: The First Riddle is a new project that seeks to marry the two aforementioned IP. According to the studio they are "big fans of Harry Potter, so the school is greatly inspired by Hogwarts," but the aesthetic also draws from the architecture of Pine's home city, Zagreb (Croatia).

Due on Android, iOS and PC on June 19, the adventure game will tasks players with navigating a mysterious school while solving puzzles. According to Pine, it'll run you 20 hours to the tune of "over 200 puzzles." I'm getting flashbacks to all of the hidden object games I've played over the years.

I uh, can also really see the Harry Potter influence, as the main trio looks like an analog of Harry/Hermione/Ron.

Report: Kerbal Space Program 2 switched developers after Take-Two poached Star Theory's team

3 years 10 months ago

Catastrophic space flight sim Kerbal Space Program 2 has been in the lab for some time. Earlier this year  Last month (wow, time’s a thing), it announced a delay until autumn of 2021 for the spaceflight sequel, a lengthy setback even by the standards of other coronavirus delays.

Based on a new report by Bloomberg, it seems the extra year and a half may have less to do with the pandemic and a lot more to do with a big studio shakeup orchestrated by KSP2’s owners Take-Two Interactive that’s ultimately resulted in Star Theory shutting down.

Paradox set to sign collective agreement with unions

3 years 10 months ago

Paradox Interactive, the makers of Crusader Kings and Stellaris, have announced the “impending completion” of a collective bargaining agreement with the labour unions for its employees in Sweden. By the end of this month, Paradox employees should have a formal way of influencing their pay, benefits and responsibilities, and be generally better protected by the unions they’re part of. If you’re a little confused on what all this “collective agreement” business means though, bear with me while I have a go at explaining it.

The difficulty with Pathologic 2's difficulty

3 years 10 months ago

“Nikolay, right now, what do you think about Pathologic 2? Was it a successful experiment?”

“Oh yes, of course! Certainly it was! Moreover, due to the conditions in which we constructed this game, it was a miracle that we released it. But I wouldn’t say it’s the game we wanted to release.”

Even now, over a year after Pathologic 2’s release, Nikolay Dybowski and Ivan Slovtsov have differing opinions about the surrealistic survival game they played leading roles in making. In fact, they’re still unpacking their thoughts about what they created, particularly in light of the changes they made after launch to its difficulty setting, a system which lies at the centre of a game which sets out to express the struggle in death and life.

Take-Two pulled the development of Kerbal Space Program 2 from developer Star Theory only to continue working on it in-house using team members it coaxed away after messaging them via LinkedIn.

That's according to a new Bloomberg report, which also details how Star Theory, with their Kerbal Space Program 2 contract cancelled, has now gone under.

Kerbal Space Program 2 was originally announced as a joint venture between Take-Two's publishing subsidiary Private Division and Star Theory, the studio behind Monday Night Combat and Planetary Annihilation.

Elite Dangerous getting on-foot traversal and atmospheric landings early next year

3 years 10 months ago

Frontier Developments has shared first details on Elite Dangerous' major new expansion, Odyssey, which will bring the likes of atmospheric landings and on-foot traversal to the space sim when it launches early next year.

The developer initially teased its Odyssey expansion last May, telling fans it was working on a mysterious "major milestone" update that was set to be a "defining moment in the history of the game". Since that early reveal, Frontier has more frequently referred to the project as its Next Era update, announcing last month that it would no longer meet its originally planned December launch window and would instead release in 2021.

As of today, however, the Next Era update is now formally known as Odyssey, and Frontier has given an early glimpse of the features it will bring, sharing details on the Elite Dangerous forums along with a flashy cinematic trailer reveal.
