The Waylanders Release Date to be Revealed New Week; Companion Mechanics Detailed

3 years 10 months ago

Developer Gato Studio isn’t quite ready to announce the release date for its upcoming fantasy RPG The Waylanders, but there isn’t long to wait. IGN’s Summer of Gaming online showcase, which kicks off next week, June 8, is expected to feature a new trailer and news on the exact launch date next week, we’re told in a press release.

Further to the release date tease, we’re also given more information on the game’s companion mechanics. And most importantly for animal lovers, it turns out petting is a thing in The Waylanders!

At least, for some heroes, that is. Not everyone will have the option to adopt a furry companion.

Rangers are the hero class with a mastery of the wild; in The Waylanders, they have twelve different animal companions to choose from. These pet companions level as you do and have unique abilities that damage, distract, heal, and inflict status effects.

Destiny 2 Teaser Hints at New Europa Location; Reveal Next Week

3 years 10 months ago

After plenty of accidental leaks and rumors, it appears we’re finally getting an official look at what is probably the next new location in Destiny 2. A new teaser released today on Twitter from the official Destiny account shows what appears to be Europa. A formal reveal will take place on June 9, at 12 P.M. Eastern.

While the location is never named, we have enough clues to believe that it is indeed Europa. One, it’s orbiting Jupiter so that eliminates anything that doesn’t. Two, Europa is far more engrained in the Destiny lore than another potential Jupiter moon such as Ganymede. And three, Europa has concept art that dates back to before Destiny 1 launched, showing that Bungie at some point wanted to go potentially create a Europa location it seems that time is finally now.

Sega Gets its Own Delicious Sake to Celebrate 60th Anniversary; Yakuza Version Also Announced

3 years 10 months ago

Few things say that you’re serious about celebrating something in Japan more than getting a special edition sake bottle. That’s exactly what Sega is doing.

Today the long-running game company is celebrating its 60th anniversary (it was founded on June 3, 1960) so the release of a dedicated alcoholic treat is rather appropriate.

The drink comes in a special metallic blue bottle with the “Go Sega” 60th-anniversary logo. It’s manufactured by Hiroshima-based Sempuku Brewery Miyakehonten as part of its “Game Legends” series.

The release date is appropriately today and the collaboration will be celebrated at the Tokyo Sake Festival 2020 on August 11. Each bottle will cost 3,000 yen, which translates approximately into $28.

On top of the Sega-branded Sake, we also get a version dedicated to the Yakuza series with three different bottles featuring Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Majoma, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon hero Ichiban Kasuga.

These will also cost 3,000 yen each and will be released on July 7.

If you want to see what the snazzy bottles look like, you can check out the gallery below.

Destiny 2 Reveal Coming June 9 - Watch The New Teaser

3 years 10 months ago

The first official look at Destiny 2's next content season is here, with Bungie announcing more details with a reveal next week. The developer shared a teaser trailer on Twitter that gives some new hints about where Destiny 2's story is headed, while also confirming that a reveal live stream will take place next week.

The reveal is set for 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET on June 9, although we don't know yet what it'll cover. The timing is significant, though--Destiny 2's next content season kicks off on the same day at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, and we've gotten almost no details about what is set to happen in it, outside of some changes to gear systems Bungie has talked about in past blog posts.

Bungie has also suggested that the reveal could go beyond talking about Season 11 to discuss bigger things on the horizon: namely, the start of Destiny 2's fourth year. Destiny typically gets big expansions in the fall, as it did with the Shadowkeep expansion in 2019. We're quickly approaching the start of Year 4 this fall, so the reveal might cover the next major addition to Destiny 2 as well as the smaller content offerings that come with a typical season.

Footage Of Canceled Avengers Game Emerges, Looks A Lot Like Left 4 Dead

3 years 10 months ago

If you've been waiting for any news on the much-delayed Avengers game set to release later this year, we've got the next-best thing. Footage of a cancelled Avengers game has emerged in the wild, hosted on the YouTube channel of gaming historian Andrew Borman. The game was originally scheduled to release alongside the first Avengers film back in 2012, but Marvel cancelled the contract with embattled publisher THQ, leading to its cancellation.

Based on the footage, it's safe to say that the Avengers game followed much in the mold of four-player co-op games first inaugurated by Left 4 Dead, with each player controlling a different member of the squad: Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man. A short trailer featuring gameplay was released on YouTube back in 2012, but this is a much more complete look at what the game might've looked like.

Square-Enix's long-in-development Avengers game is set to release this September, following a delay. According to a recent announcement, there will be a special stream for the game on June 24 as part of the publisher's replacement E3 event.

Nintendo Labo's Coolest Kits Get Big Discounts (Today Only)

3 years 10 months ago

Though it didn't catch on like Nintendo probably hoped, the Nintendo Labo lineup of DIY cardboard builds are still pretty impressive. They also happen to have that wonderfully weird charm that many of Nintendo's most exciting products possess. With everyone spending more time at home, it's a great time to sit down with the family and make cardboard cars, submarines, and airplanes. Best Buy currently has two of the cooler Labo kits--the VR Kit and Vehicle Kit--discounted to $20 in its current Deal of the Day.

I had a great time building several of the Labo kits with my daughter, so I'd definitely recommend Labo to anyone with young kids who is looking for a fun activity to work on at home.

Nintendo Labo Vehicle Kit | $20 ($70)

Nintendo Labo Vehicle Kit

The Vehicle Kit comes with three builds: car, plane, and submarine. After making each build, you can use them to play unique games with the help of the Joy-Con's HD Rumble feature. Overall, the Vehicle Kit probably has the most impressive games, which means you and your kids will likely get more use out of the cardboard builds after putting them together. Like all Labo kits, you can design your own apps in Toy-Con garage using a node-based programming language.

Pokemon Sword And Shield: You Can Get Free Galar Starters Via Pokemon Home

3 years 10 months ago

A few more free Pokemon are up for grabs for Pokemon Sword and Shield. Players who transfer a monster from either title to Pokemon Home will be able to claim the three Galar starters: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. What makes these particular Pokemon special is that they each have their Hidden Abilities, which up until now have not been available in Sword and Shield.

Grookey's Hidden Ability is Grassy Surge, which sets up Grassy Terrain as soon as the Pokemon enters the field. Scorbunny's is Libero; this changes the Pokemon's type to match whatever move it is using. Finally, Sobble's Hidden Ability is Sniper, which increases the amount of damage critical hits inflict.

Fortnite Season 3 Leak Seemingly Confirms Underwater Theme Rumors

3 years 10 months ago

Over the past few weeks, a number of posts from prominent Fortnite leakers have suggested that the upcoming Chapter 2 Season 3 will have players dive underwater to battle it out. Now, the most compelling evidence yet has emerged, further suggesting what's to come following the upcoming Doomsday event. Get your swimsuit and flippers ready, because it looks like the game will be heading underwater--at least a little.

A Twitter user recently noticed that the PlayStation Store had mistakenly changed Fortnite's icon on the storefront ahead of time, and it depicts the familiar battle bus slipping beneath the sea. It wouldn't be the first underwater foray for the game, as players were plunged beneath the surface as part of the recent Travis Scott event.

The start date for Fortnite's Season 3 has just been changed again and will begin on June 17. This follows multiple previous delays, with this latest one attributed to the ongoing protests in response to the murder of George Floyd.

Pokemon Go Studio Announces Black Lives Matter Donations, Company Initiatives

3 years 10 months ago

Niantic, the company behind ARG mobile hits like Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, has announced a broad set of company plans aimed at racial justice reforms, in light of ongoing protests over policing in America. The letter from CEO John Hanke outlines millions in donations and paid time off for employees to volunteer.

Hanke says the company will be donating a minimum of $5 million in proceeds from Pokemon Go Fest 2020 ticket sales. Half of that will go towards funding new projects from black creators to make more diverse content, while the other half will go towards US nonprofits. In addition, it will donate $100,000 to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, and matching employee contributions up to $50,000.

The note also states that Niantic employees currently get four days per year to attend in-game events. Going forward, the company will add a fifth day and turn them all into Flex Days, allowing Niantic employees to use those days to volunteer in their communities.

Mario Kart Tour's 'Cooking Tour' adds Chef Mario and Choco Island

3 years 10 months ago

Having already seemingly abandoned real-world locations for fictional ones, Nintendo's Mario Kart Tour now seems to be replacing these fictional locations with simple "concepts," as the mobile racer's newest in-game event has revealed itself as simply "Cooking Tour."

Now live in-game, Cooking Tour adds several new drivers and vehicles to the gacha pipe system. These include Chef Mario and the much-cooler Pastry Chef Shy Guy. A cherub variant of Baby Peach is also being added to the mix, as are a selection of food-based vehicles, including karts styled after hamburgers and macaroons. This event sees the return of classic Super Mario Kart circuit Choco Island, naturally. You can check out the new content in the trailer below.

Unreleased Days of Thunder NES game recovered after 30 years

3 years 10 months ago

A team of dedicated video game historians has uncovered and reconstructed an unreleased NES game based on 1990 indycar movie Days of Thunder, some 30 years after it was abandoned by publisher Mindscape

Days of Thunder was discovered by The Video Game History Foundation among a huge catalogue of materials that belonged to game designer Chris Oberth, who sadly passed in 2012. As the foundation picked their way through Oberth's discs, hard-drives and notes, the team came across a 21-floppy disc backup of a single HDD, which contained the code for what would have been the NES edition of Days of Thunder - entirely different from the Beam Software-developed release edition.

In a lengthy and meticulous undertaking, The VGHF then picked their way through each of the 21 discs, utilising a '90s era PC in order to accurately piece the scattered code back together. VGHF's Richard Whitehouse steadfastly combed through piles and piles of old data to find small-but-integral files, aided by the tools and software of the period. After recovering a particularly concealed tile file, Days of Thunder was ready to take to the raceway once again, three decades years after it was put in the pits for good.

The latest game featuring Sony's cat mascot Toro is getting localized this month

3 years 10 months ago

Although he isn't as well known outside of Japan, you've probably seen the cat mascot Toro before.

Whether it's a cameo in LittleBigPlanet or PlayStation All-Stars, the character had a decent push during the previous generations, but has mostly been relegated to Japanese media. Until now, that is. Announced this week by publisher PiG Corporation, Toro and Friends: Onsen Town will be released in the west on Android and iOS devices later this month on June 23.

As many mobile games that come out of Japan tend to roll, it will be a match-three puzzler, with a story mode and a village to roam around. Toro is the star, but like Garfield, this cat is bringing friends (nailed it), including more cats, a rabbit, a dog and a frog. Oh and a robot, just in case it wasn't anime enough for you.

You can find the pre-load links for this free game here (iOS/Android).

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Will Let You Leave the Ship and Walk on Planets

3 years 10 months ago
Elite Dangerous's newest expansion, Odyssey, will allow players to step off their ships, walk on planets, engage in first-person fights, complete contracts, and much more. Arriving in Early 2021, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is more than just a way for space travelers to get a good view of a new planet, as there will be a wide variety of contracts to undertake, including those that feature diplomacy, commerce, lethal stealth, and all-out combat. There will be "diverse settings, objectives, and NPCs" that offer "endless mission variety and a near infinite amount of content to enjoy." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/03/elite-dangerous-odyssey-announcement-trailer"] There will be social hubs spread throughout the galaxy where travelers can form alliances, procure services, and find expert support in "highly coveted Engineers." When in combat, fights will take place in first-person and new and upgradeable gear will be waiting for those brave enough to get it. Oh, and SRVs and Starships will still be in play, so players must not forget to look up to the stars every once and a while. Elite Dangerous is a space flight simulation game that was first released on PC in 2014 before arriving on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It features a 1:1 scale open-world representation of the Milky Way and allows for single-player and multiplayer fun. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=elite-dangerous-horizons-24-the-return-screenshots&captions=true"] In our review of Elite Dangerous, we said it "is a beautiful game and an amazing space sim let down by a universe devoid of character and low on excitement. It's great to fly the various ships and experiment with different loadouts, and there are a lot of different roles to play in Elite that helps keep the experience fresh.

Resident Evil Creator Talks Zombies in 2020 and How His Games Will Change Post-Pandemic

3 years 10 months ago

This article is part of a new initiative on IGN where we spend a whole month exploring topics we find interesting in the world of video games. June is Icons Month at IGN, where we’re profiling iconic video game industry figures, characters, series and themes.

When it comes to game development in Japan, unless you’re throwing around names like “Shigeru Miyamoto,” few people will have had more impact on the industry than veteran game director, Shinji Mikami. The man is a bonafide hitmaker, creating not just incredible games but popularizing entire sub-genres into the mainstream. You’ve read all the stories before: After joining Capcom straight out of university, and proving himself on early 16-bit Disney-based properties like Aladdin and Goof Troop, he was entrusted with the Sweet Home remake that eventually transformed into Resident Evil (or, Biohazard, as it is known in Japan). Resident Evil’s world-spanning influence cannot be understated.

Konami Sets Up Western Third-Party Game Publishing Division

3 years 10 months ago
Konami, the company behind such games as Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill, has announced it has launched a new third-party publishing unit in the West and that its first game, Skelattack, is available now. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Konami's senior brand and business development manager Richard Jones discussed how this new initiative will focus on external studios that will build games designed to succeed in western markets. "The drive is towards publishing more titles from Western studios," Jones said. "So the focus for the European team is domestic audiences. Obviously everyone knows Konami, we have studios and teams in Japan, we have many well-known, well loved IPs. They're all being managed and looked after by our studios in Japan, and what we're looking for is complementary titles, to build the portfolio with things that perhaps [are] new to Konami -- Western titles for Western audiences." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/03/skelattack-launch-trailer"] Even though Konami hasn't been focusing on some of its most beloved franchises, save for such titles as Metal Gear Survive and the Contra and Castlevania Anniversary Collections, its mobile games, PES' online mode, and esports have led to years of consecutive profit growth. These new games, however, will find their way to PC and consoles.
