Ninjala, the upcoming online multiplayer title from GungHo, had an open beta test this weekend for the Nintendo Switch for just one day, so naturally, I decided to give it a spin.
Peering in from the outside, Ninjala’s aesthetic is similar to that of Splatoon’s but after jumping into a couple of matches, it’s clear that Ninjala is very distinct from Nintendo’s online ink shooter.
The beta allowed players to jump into an online eight-player “battle royale” mode (not to be confused with the traditional battle royale genre) that pits each player against one another. The full release will have team modes as well with 4v4 battles. The beta had only two stages to play in, but more will be available at launch.
The first stage was a small square-shaped arena while the second stage took place in a bustling metropolis that reminded me of New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey. There were taxis everywhere, streetlights, and skyscrapers to climb up and the overall vibe of the stage was upbeat.
Last week we got a closer look at Outriders, the upcoming 2020 shooter-RPG from Square Enix and People Can Fly. The broadcast was the first in series of monthly deep dives covering a variety of areas. We got to see some more gameplay including the Trickster class in action, got a small taste of the story, and also saw how players will be able to tweak their experience through World Tiers and customizable UI.
While Twinfinite’s Jesse Vitelli got a little taste of Outriders at PAX East this year, this was my first in-depth look at the game up close. And as one of the site’s most enthusiastic shooter-RPG players, it’s naturally one that I’ll be following right the way up until its launch.
Like battle royale, the shooter-RPG genre has flourished this generation into among the most popular in gaming. Further, it’s similarly one whose founding fathers –IPs like Destiny and The Division– practically innovated the entire scene from scratch, with only previous-generation hits like Borderlands and Mass Effect to guide their design.
Contrastly, Outriders arrives with the advantage of having an entire generation’s worth of successes and mistakes to learn from. And what has been shown so far of Outriders appears to demonstrate that People Can Fly are pulling a little bit from everything to create something unique and polished.
Outriders gameplay appears to mix The Division’s third-person combat with the fantastical elements of Destiny. It is set on an exotic planet filled with gritty sci-fi enemies, far removed from any semblance of realism seen in games like The Division.
If you love the Final Fantasy VII Remake and you’re in the market for a new dynamic theme for your PS4, today’s your lucky day.
Square Enix just released Tifa’s dynamic theme on the North American and on the European PlayStation Store.
It appears to be the same theme that was granted a few months ago to those who took part in Ferrero’s Butterfinger promotion, but this time around, it’s free for everyone, including those who don’t care for chocolate.
The teme is nicely animated, featuring Tifa as she looks at the starry sky. It features custom music and icons, and it’s definitely one of the better dynamic themes available on the PlayStation Store for free.
At the moment, there is no indication of limited times for the availability of the offer, so it should be there for the time being.
Incidentally, another dynamic theme featuring cloud is available at no additional cost for PlayStation Plus subscribers. You can find it on both the North American and on the European PlayStation Store.
With the world very slowly recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, game releases are picking up once more. The Last of Us Part II will kick off the second half of the year in a couple of weeks and VR games are also returning to the schedule. Here are all the June 2020 VR game release dates, in case you’re after something to play on your shiny headsets during the lull this month.
The release of Valve’s Half Life: Alyx in March was huge for VR fans and Iron Man VR is finally coming to PSVR in early July, following a delay of its own, but June is looking pretty quiet. There’s plenty to play, but not much that’s stands out or that is high profile. You might uncover some hidden gems though.
There was a time around here when the idea of missing a Tuesday Bombcast was unheard of, but it's become clear lately that, like a lot of other things that used to seem important, that time is over.
The events of the last week--starting with the extrajudicial killing of George Floyd, and extending through seemingly endless displays of police brutality against peaceful protesters and the callous, dangerous response from our national leadership--have shocked, saddened and outraged us along with all of you. Out of respect for and solidarity with the black community, everyone fighting against systemic racism, bigotry and oppression, and frankly anyone who still values basic human decency in this country, we're postponing today's Bombcast and all other content to allow time for badly needed compassion and reflection, and to make room for vastly more important discussion and information.
We'll be back soon, but for now, we wanted to pass along some resources that will help you chip in and make a difference, no matter who or where you are.
Ever since a fan-made PC version of Mario 64 was released last month, modders have been having fun updating the nearly 25-year old Nintendo 64 game to give it a fresh, modern look.
The U.S. has erupted in protests over the brutal killing of George Floyd by police. The protests have largely been peaceful. The police response has not.
Hot on the caudal fin of Tripwire Interactive’s bloody aquatic epic Maneater, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ summer season fills its seas with man-eating beasts. Animal Crossing’s sharks don’t actually eat people and can be caught by a single human holding a flimsy fishing pole, but that just makes them more lovable.
CD Projekt Red has delayed its Cyberpunk 2077 event as it said, "more important discussions are happening right now."

Total War developer Creative Assembly has employed a Trojan horse of sorts, a diversionary tactic to distract from its original plan. Don't worry, this horse comes bearing gift -- and you know what they say about gift horses.
Total War Saga: Troy will no longer be launching on Steam. Epic has swooped in and secured Troy exclusivity for one year. It releases on the Epic Games Store on August 13, 2020; it releases on Steam on August 13, 2021.
However, Total War Saga: Troy will be free on launch day. For 24 hours on August 13, anyone who claims the newest Total War on the Epic Games Store will get to keep it permanently. Free stuff is your one Achilles heel. We'll be sure to remind you when it's time to pick it up.
In the announcement post, Creative Assembly goes to great lengths to justify the decision. Pre-orders hadn't yet opened on Steam (so no one had put actual money down), this will expose Total War to a much larger audience, the Saga offshoot series is about experimenting and moving to Epic is a grand experiment, etc. But, the biggest reason isn't mentioned: Epic will guarantee enough sales to cover development costs, automatically making Total War Saga: Troy profitable. That alone is justification enough.

inXile Entertainment has released the third chapter of its ongoing dev diary series, pre-empting the launch of its post-apocalyptic RPG Wasteland 3. Following on from previous videos - which looked at the sequel's world, characters, and in-game battle mechanics - this third diary entry focuses on the difficult decisions your party will be forced to make as they pick their way through war-torn Colorado.
Headed up by lead writer Nathan Long and studio head Brian Fargo, (rocking an awesome Godzilla shirt), the video looks at the moral quandaries that will face your rag-tag band of Rangers as the undertake dangerous missions ranging from reconnaissance and rescue, to salvage, exploration, espionage, and shocking acts of violence.

There's actually two Pokemon related bits of news today: a date for the first Sword and Shield expansion and a new Pokemon Home promotion.
While the former is more obvious and upfront (it's June 17), the latter was actually announced quietly on the Japanese Pokemon Twitter account, with a link to a page for more info. Basically, as of today, if you deposit any creature in Home (which is available now for Switch and mobile devices), you can unlock the three Galar region starters for free.
That's Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble, all of which will have special hidden abilities. Just deposit something, head to the gifts section and receive all three: done! It's a nice little promo that will provide folks with plenty of time to level them up before the June 17 launch date of Isle of Armor.

City Connection continues in its efforts to pump out classic Psikyo shmups for the PC platform. Having only just released Strikers 1945 II on May 29, the publisher has announced that its 1999 sequel Strikers 1945 III, will be taking off on Steam June 30.
Known by the alternate title Strikers 1999, Strikers 1945 III is the third and final mainline entry in the time-bending franchise, and features yet more fast-and-furious action as one or two players choose one of six powerful aircraft and blast their way through swarms of enemies. Strikers 1945 III debuted new mechanics such as the "Technical Bonus," which rewards players who dare to get up-close-and-personal with the enemy, and the "Chain Bonus," offering multipliers for near-constant strings of kills.

Today Sega released the third trailer of the saga of Sega Shiro designed to commemorate the company’s 60th anniversary.
This is a rather special one as we see the predictable return of Segata Sanshiro, who was the hilarious protagonist of a legendary advertisement campaign for the Sega Saturn aired between 1997 and 1998 when he sacrificed himself to protect the launch of the Dreamcast.
The series of trailers focuses on Sega Shiro, Sanshiro’s son, played by Maito Fujioka, who happens to be the actual son of Hiroshi Fujioka, who played Segata Sanshiro himself.
In this episode, Shiro confronts a villain named Sega Attanshiroo in a Judo match. Upon defeat, Attanshiroo reveals that he is indeed our hero’s father, returned to verify his son’s growth as a defender of Sega.
Yet, there is no time for a reunion, as Sanshiro pushes Shiro to throw him once again, and is again propelled in space. In the end, it all turns out to be a dream, but is it, really?
In the end, Sega leaves behind his belt with the message “I entrust Sega to you.”
You can check it out below alongside the first trailer from March and the second from April.
Developer and publisher of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red, has announced that ‘Night City Wire’ has been pushed back from June 11 to June 25. The upcoming event for the massively-anticipated RPG is planned to show off “stuff” for Cyberpunk 2077 but no specific details have been shared.
The decision to delay the event is due to the events currently happening in the United States, with CD Projekt Red stating that “more important discussions are happening right now and we want them to be heard. We wholeheartedly stand against racism, intolerance, and violence. Black Lives Matter.”
CD Projekt Red announced the short delay on Twitter via the official account for Cyberpunk 2077, with the tweet reading:
We decided to move Night City Wire to Jun 25th. We still look forward to sharing new information about CP’77, but more important discussions are happening right now and we want them to be heard. We wholeheartedly stand against racism, intolerance and violence. Black Lives Matter.
Konami is back once more with Skelattack from developer Ukuza Inc., it’s available today and an informative launch trailer has been uploaded alongside the release.
The launch trailer, with its gravelly narrator and haunting soundtrack perfectly set the stage for the trailer before it allows itself to get a little goofy.
The trailer’s description explains Skelattack by saying:
Skelattack turns the platforming hero stereotype on its head by putting players in the shoes of Skully, a skeleton fighting to protect his home. As a member of the newly deceased and just getting the hang of being dead, Skully’s newfound home and friends are attacked by humans. Instead of seeking gold or other treasure, the humans kidnap Aftervale’s elder skeleton, Elzedon, and attempt to steal the magic that kindles the spirits of the dead – the Blue Flame. Together with Imber, Skully’s trusty bat friend, players will jump, slash, and flap their way through the Underworld in an attempt to stop the human threat, save the Elder, and protect the Blue Flame.
Skelattack is available for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC for $19.99.

George Floyd was murdered by the police, and I can’t tell you how hard it’s been to work, to write, or to live since then.
Writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach wants to get one thing straight: Of course Ein is a corgi. A rumor went around last year that the Netflix show cast a husky as the data dog, which was later debunked. After all, when it comes to adapting Cowboy Bebop, there’s only one rule to follow.
Last night, the Street Fighter subreddit organized an online Street Fighter V tournament to raise money for Black Lives Matter charities in response to the recent police murder of George Floyd, a black Minnesotan, and ongoing attempts by activists across the country to hold law enforcement accountable. There was confusion in the world of System Shock last month, after an ambiguous tweet brought about conflict as to who owned the sci-fi horror IP and who was working on what project. Attempting to bring a little clarity, OtherSide Entertainment has quietly noted that it is still working on System Shock 3, supported by Chinese company Tencent Holdings.
As reported by VGC, OtherSide Entertainment community manager Alyssa Marshall made a still-vague statement this weekend, announcing that OtherSide "are still involved" in the creation of the beleaguered sequel, but that the company "can’t speak on it much further than that at this point in time."
The long and winding road to System Shock 3 began with the game's initial announcement back in 2015, with studio Starbreeze attached to develop. In 2019, Starbreeze was forced to re-sell the game's rights back to Otherside Entertainment after the former hit severe financial trouble.
Amid active racial strife, ongoing protests, and militaristic and hostile police response to it all, Activision has made the prudent decision to indefinitely delay the next season of its Call of Duty games.
Activision announced on Twitter that the new seasons of Modern Warfare, Warzone, and COD: Mobile won't launch on June 3 as previously planned. Instead, Activision says "It's time for those speaking up for equality, justice, and change to be seen and heard."

Sometimes, a video game sequel or prequel doesn’t measure up, either because of circumstance or technical limitations. With full remakes becoming more common place though, these games now have the chance to become the experiences they were always meant to be. To that end, here are 10 video game sequels and prequels that deserve a full remake.
Starting off with a bit of a “Hail Mary” here, but if there’s one sequel that definitely deserves a do-over, it’s Dead Space 3.
Upon release, fans and critics alike found the end of the horror trilogy disappointing in several areas. The iconic Necromorphs were joined by run-of-the-mill human enemies, turning tense encounters with strategic dismemberment into basic shooter fare.
The tone and horror elements were likewise hamstrung by generic shooter elements and the inclusion of co-op, and pervasive microtransactions was a major distraction from everything that went on in the game.
Every Tuesday, when the PlayStation Store updates, there is a selection of newly added free items for the PS4 that often go overlooked. To get the best bang for your buck (AKA free stuff on PSN), let’s sift the free games, DLC, and themes out from the paid, shall we?
Welcome to June, everyone! The new month on the PlayStation Store of course comes new PlayStation Plus games. While one of them, Call of Duty: WWII, you have been able to enjoy for a week, the second game is only just now available. Star Wars Battlefront II (lots of II’s, it seems) is the second game, so you have a month of FPS ahead of you.
On top of these two PS+ games, there is an unrelated free game on the store called Racing Bros. It’s been available on the UK PlayStation Store since February 2020, and the states are only just now getting it. Gather three friends and race.
