Sludge Life Brings Graffiti, Cat Butts, And A Fart Button To Switch And Epic Store

4 years 2 months ago

Devolver Digital has announced Sludge Life for Nintendo Switch and the Epic Games Store. It's an open-world title set on a sludge-coated island that's rife with corporate branding, and it looks as grimy and goofy as you might expect. You play as Ghost, a graffiti tagger, and depending on how you play you can either rise to be a hero to the people of the island or bring the whole thing crashing down.

The trailer, below, shows off the game's unique aesthetic--note, for instance, how the cats have two butts. The game will also carry a dedicated fart button, which is good: in the wake of Untitled Goose Game, dedicated noise buttons are all the rage.

Sludge Life will have a very open structure, as you can wander through the island and complete tasks or explore at your own rate--there's an ending (in fact, there are three potential endings), but it's going for a non-linear structure. You can also get sidetracked by the game-within-a-game, Crypt Creeper, shown in the trailer.

The Dark Pictures--Man Of Medan Follow-Up Little Hope Releases In Summer 2020

4 years 2 months ago

The follow-up to The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan was first glanced after that game's credits, where we got out first teaser trailer for Little Hope. Now, we have a better idea of when this next episode will arrive, and it won't be as long a wait as it was for Man of Medan.

Little Hope will release in Summer 2020, effectively meaning that we can expect it sometime between June and August. Bandai Namco also debuted a new trailer, but don't expect new footage--it's mostly made up of streamer reactions to Man of Medan (and a celebration of actor Will Poulter's casting in Little Hope), with the release window announcement buried in the comments below the video.

Little Hope is set in the titular town, which is isolated and abandoned. Four college students, along with their professor, are trapped by an impenetrable fog, and have to escape the "nightmarish visions" that are pursuing them. It'll be up to the player, alone or with a partner in co-op, to search the town and discover what is happening, how it's connected to them, and--hopefully--how to escape.

It "Made Sense" For Baldur's Gate 3's Combat To Be Turn-Based, Says Dev

4 years 2 months ago

Although combat in previous Baldur's Gate titles has traditionally focused around the use of real-time mechanics, Baldur's Gate III uses a turn-based system. For developer Larian Studios, it's always been a no-brainer to make Baldur's Gate III a turn-based game.

"It was never really a question," Baldur's Gate III design producer David Walgrave said, according to USG. "We've been doing turn-based for a while now. We're pretty good at it. Dungeons & Dragons is turn-based in itself, so it makes a lot of sense.

"Even after we implemented the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, the result was so different from what we concocted with Divinity: Original Sin that we saw that the combat designers would have to do it completely different, so that was a challenge," Walgrave continued. "And we're doing things that we haven't done before, so, for us, it was the best choice."

Cyberpunk 2077's Action Figures Didn't Get Delayed!

4 years 2 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 might have gotten delayed, but its official action figure line from McFarlane Toys is arriving right on schedule. The folks over there were nice enough to send over some samples for us to unbox, and here they are: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=mcfarlane-toys-cyberpunk-2077-johnny-silverhand-action-figures&captions=true"] The first wave includes 7-inch figures of player character "V" (male version) and Johnny Silverhand, each with a whopping 22 points of articulation and a bunch of accessories. V comes with a pistol, submachine gun, and katana, while Johnny includes his guitar, strap, an alternate hand for rockin' out, and a bottle of what's presumably some sort of delicious futuristic party liquor. Meanwhile, the 12-inch Johnny Silverhand is much lighter on gadgets and articulation, but is definitely a nice display piece for fans of Cyberpunk 2077, Keanu Reeves, or a gritty reimagining of one half of Wyld Stallyns. The 7-inch figures have a suggested price of $24.99, while the big fella will set you back $39.99. They're up for pre-order on Amazon, Walmart, and GameStop. Expect them to start shipping soon, and popping up on retail store shelves shortly thereafter. [poilib element="accentDivider"]Max Scoville is a host, producer, and toy nerd for IGN. Dota Underlords Is Out Of Early Access And Better Than Ever

4 years 2 months ago

For a handful of weeks last year, Dota Underlords devoured my entire life. Then, abruptly, I stopped playing. At the time, Valve’s entry into the suddenly-crowded auto battler arena suffered from the same issue as its competition: Its bones, though they formed a sturdy spinal scaffolding, had no meat on them.

PUBG Developer Addresses Ongoing Issues And What They're Doing About Them

4 years 2 months ago

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is going strong, recently beginning its sixth season of content and adding a new team deathmatch mode, but there are also ongoing issues with the game that have sparked concerns for some players. The developers have taken to the game's website to discuss some of these issues, and explain what they're doing to improve matters for players.

The post opens with a brief statement on cheaters, and how dealing with them is a high priority. "We’re utilizing multiple internal teams and external resources to find new solutions for this problem. We’ll be sharing more information regarding these efforts in our upcoming Community Letter and 2020 Roadmap post in early March."

One major issue for players has been the game's performance, with FPS stuttering, freezing, and crashing issues making the game harder to compete in. These problems have increased since January, and the team is "conducting ongoing multi-faceted tests and analysis in an attempt to identify and resolve the issues causing this performance loss and causing game crashes."

Because some of these crashes have been hard to reproduce, or may be specific to hardware, it's been difficult. Thankfully, many players have sent in replay data to help the team identify issues. The developers encourage players to share issues they face through the game's support page.

Sea of Thieves adding devastating Chain Shot cannonballs and new Tall Tale in March

4 years 2 months ago

It's all go in the lead-up to Sea of Thieves' second anniversary next month. The two-week Hunter's Haul fishing challenge is currently underway, running in tandem with the Chests of Rage update, and Rare has now revealed a variety of activities scheduled for this weekend, as well as the devastating new Chain Shot cannonballs, coming to the game in March.

This Saturday, 29th February, Rare is celebrating 2020's "bonus" day with a special bonus event, rewarding double XP and gold in Adventure and Arena modes. It's also running two separate Twitch drops this weekend, and anyone that's linked their accounts will receive the Obsidian Fishing Rod and Ebon Flintlock on Saturday and Sunday respectively if they watch a partner stream (or, at the very least, leave one running in a background tab) for 30 minutes.

Rare's news trumpet has also blasted out a tease of some of the features arriving as part of Sea of Thieves' March update. One of these will take the form of a new Tall Tales story episode (presumably revolving around Captain Flameheart and the Masked Stranger, seeing as events in that particular storyline appear to have come to a head), and the other is the Chain Shot.

Nioh 2 for PS4 Reveals New Characters, Stages, Youkai, & Features With Screenshots & Details Aplenty

4 years 2 months ago

Today Koei Tecmo updated the official site and sent an accompanying press release about its upcoming souls-like action RPG Nioh 2, providing more screenshots and details.

To be more precise, the assets focus on the content coming in the “Last Chance Trial” demo releasing today and lasting until March 1.

First of all, we see the Ryomen Sukuna, which has pretty much been the “poster boy” of the demo. It’s a Youkai that looks like a blue and red demons attacked together back to back. It was said to have appeared in the region of Hida (currently Gifu prefecture) during the time of Emperor Nintoku, wielding multiple weapons with its four arms, engaging in brutal attacks toward the people.

Sen no Rikyu is a tea master who was in service if Hideyoshi. He used to be a merchant in Sakai. He studied the tea ceremony under the tutelage of Takeno Joo, and he was later called “Tea Saint.”

At first, he served Oda Nobunaga, but after his death, he moved on to serve Hideyoshi Toyotomi as his confidant. He has influenced many warlords being the focus of both Nobunaga and Hideyoshi’s use of tea ceremony in politics.

Saito Yoshitatsu was the daimyo of the Mino region, son of Saito Dosan. Following the retirement of his father, he inherited the position of head of the family and took over Inabayama Castle. He was actually hostile to his father, who forged an alliance with Nobunaga by having him marry his daughter Nohime. Yet, Mino and Owari would once more go to war due to the actions of Yoshitatsu.

Shovel Knight Artist Is "Sure" That A Direct Sequel Will Happen Eventually

4 years 2 months ago

The original Shovel Knight saga from Yacht Club Games wrapped up in 2019 with Shovel Knight: King of Cards, the game's final expansion. Two spin-offs have been planned, with Shovel Knight Dig and Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon both in the works, but fans might be curious about whether a direct sequel will ever follow.

Shovel Knight 2 has not been announced or confirmed, but a member of the game's development team believes it will happen. Speaking to Dualshockers, Yacht Club Games artist Sandy Gordon says that we have definitely not "seen the end of Shovel Knight."

Asked whether this means there will be a sequel, he says that he is "sure that’ll happen at some point: it’s something we talk about a lot.”

Baldur's Gate III Devs Open Up About Stadia Exclusivity, Suggest Game Wouldn't Run On PS4/Xbox One

4 years 2 months ago

Baldur's Gate III has been unveiled, featuring a turn-based combat system and some powerful cinematics. Now, with the game being shown at PAX East, more information is coming to light about the game as outlets talk to the creative forces behind it. One that that has come up a few times is the fact that the game is skipping PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but will be available for Google Stadia.

Talking to Eurogamer, design producer David Walgrave says that he isn't convinced the game would run efficiently on the other consoles. "I don't think that current-gen consoles would be able to run it," Walgrave says. "There's a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don't know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things."

He concedes that it might work if they tweaked the textures, but "It wouldn't look as cool anymore." He also says that the game will come to PC and Stadia simultaneously in early access; although Stadia does not have an official term for Early Access as of yet, he says that it will largely be the same as it is on PC.

New Hyperdimension Neptunia Game VVVTune for PS4 Gets First Screenshots and Release Date

4 years 2 months ago

Today Compile Heart released the first screenshots of the upcoming Hyperdimension Neptunia spinoff game VVVTune. A release date was also announced.

The game will launch in Japan on July 2, 2020, exclusively for PS4. Of course, a western release has not been announced just yet. We’ll have to wait for an announcement from Idea Factory International.

The game will be priced at 7,600 plus taxes for the standard edition, 9,600 yen plus taxes for the limited edition, and 7,300 yen plus taxes for the digital download.

The limited edition will include an artbook, the soundtrack, and four posters.

The images included in the press release plus more published on the official website show familiar waifus from the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, plus plenty original to this game. On top of them, guest virtual YouTubers will appear.

Interestingly, the gameplay will include two different battle systems. The four goddesses from the Neptunia series will feature third-person shooter gameplay, while the virtual idols will fight in action-JRPG style.

The guest virtual YouTubers have been sent to the game’s world and have been captured by an anti-intrusion system. By defeating the evil anti-Vtuber hunters and releasing them, you can unlock them as support.

The game also features a dancing minigame called “BeatTik” in which you can have them wear the accessories earned in the game.

You can check out all the screenshots below.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke spoke openly, on stream and to various publications, about the Early Access release of Baldur's Gate 3 and about how companions will work in the game

"The reason we’re selling it through Early Access is we have this many permutations, this many systems that are all working together," Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke told VG247 during the PAX East livestream. "So it’s going to take us some time to get everything to a state where we can say ‘okay, now it’s robust and it works in every single fashion.'"

The 9 dodgiest religions in games

4 years 2 months ago

Ah, religion. I know this is a topic we all have trouble agreeing on. But fear not, humble practitioner of a good pray, I am not here to squint angrily at your favourite book of life advice. I’m only here for the videogame religions. The ones that are very, very, very, very bad. You know, the gun-loving cults and the xenophobic people-burners. The (mostly) fictional religions that involve an uncommon volume of murder. Step this way, sprinkle yourself with some of my 100% genuine oil of the almighty, and peruse the 9 most dodgy religions in games.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions Extended Story Trailer Brings Back Epic Anime Memories

4 years 2 months ago

Today Bandai Namco released a new trailer of its upcoming anime soccer game Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.

To be more precise, this is the extended version of the story trailer released a couple of weeks ago featuring the Tsubasa Episode mode.

This time around on top of the epic action on the field, we get to see many of the familiar scenes from the original anime and manga that happened outside the field, including a few of the secondary characters like our heroes’ mentors and  Hikaru Matsuyama’s girlfriend Yoshiko Fujisawa.

Add to that the game’s own version of the theme song Moete Hero, and the effect is complete.

If you grew up with the anime as I did, prepare to tear up as you watch the trailer below.

While the franchise is certainly very well knon, you may not be familiar with it, as its popularity varies a lot from region to region.

In North America the original Captain Tsubasa anime never rose to similar prominence, I don’t think I’m exaggerating by arguing that in many European and Latin American countries (and of course, Japan) almost every kid grown up in the past forty years knows about it.

The Double-A Team: LocoRoco is a bright and breezy charmer

4 years 2 months ago

The Double-A Team is a feature series honouring the unpretentious, mid-budget, gimmicky commercial action games that no-one seems to make any more.

You can catch up with all of our Double-A Team pieces in our handy, spangly archive.

I took the bus into town to buy LocoRoco when it first came out for the PSP, back in - crikey! - 2006. I remember this because I took the bus home, too. And I remember that because halfway through the trip, a grey day with low clouds and the promise of rain, I briefly pulled the LocoRoco box out of the bag to take a look at it - and it was like the sun had risen, all of a sudden, on the top deck of a 46 to deepest Hove.

Have You Played… The King Of Fighters XIII?

4 years 2 months ago

It’s no secret that I like pretty fighting games like The King Of Fighters XIII. While I’ve never been as into SNK’s style of fighting as I have Capcom’s Street Fighter, the genre’s shift away from hand-drawn sprites to 3D models has never appealed to me. It made Ken’s hair look like a bunch of bananas, and that’s a cardinal sin. It’s sad, then, that KoF XIII was the last sprite-based game before SNK followed with its own crude 3D models.

Five of the Best: Storms

4 years 2 months ago

Five of the Best is a weekly series about the bits of games we overlook. I'm talking about hands, maps, cats, startup screens - things we ignore at the time but can recall years later because, it turns out, they're integral to our memory of the game. Now is the time to celebrate them!

It works like this. Various Eurogamer writers will share their memories in the article and then you - probably outraged we didn't include the thing you're thinking of - can share the thing you're thinking of in the comments below. We've had some great discussions in our other Five of the Best pieces. So come on, what are you waiting for? On we go!

Did you know the UK has the next dozen or so storm names already figured out? Following the rather mundane "Dennis" will be Ellen, then Francis and then Gerda, which is a great name! There are a few other bangers in there too: Iris (imagine the puns!), Noah (ironically reincarnated as the storm) and Willow (great to see her working again after Buffy).

Looks like Pokémon Go is planning two global ticketed events next month

4 years 2 months ago

New files found overnight within Pokémon Go (by PokeMiners) reference two upcoming, unannounced ticketed events due to take place in-game next month.

These would be the second and third global ticketed events following last October's A Colossal Discovery Special Research, which granted early access to a forthcoming EX Raid boss. That felt just about worth the £8 entry fee - but there was some room for improvement.

The first upcoming event is currently titled "A Drive to Investigate", and is dated for 22nd March. A description for its ticket reads:

Infliction: Extended Cut review - PT-esque thrills fall flat

4 years 2 months ago

If Infliction was a colour, it would be beige. If it was a biscuit, it'd be the tasteless disc of a Rich Tea. If it was a band, it'd play nothing but Coldplay tracks. Sure, they all have their fans and they all technically deliver on what's promised on the tin, but let's face it: you could probably live without them, too.

The big but here? For every sin it commits, Infliction has a saving grace. For every recycled cliche, it offers something fresh. For every cringey line of dialogue, there's another delivered with perfect timing and pathos. When you tire of picking through the contents of the same old rooms in the same old house, the game will unexpectedly toss you someplace new. And when you get bored with that place - oh, look! - we're back in the marital home again.

Consequently, I'm not sure what to think about this indie horror just yet. On one hand, that can't be a good sign; at the time of writing I've completed it three times (once on PC, and twice on PlayStation 4) and if that isn't long enough to form an opinion, then I don't know what is. But on the flip side, I didn't mind playing it the second or even third time, either.
