EVE Online’s annual Fanfest event is the latest in a string of video game-related events to be negatively impacted by the spread of COVID-19, or coronavirus. Today, during a panel from PAX East, Bethesda showcased new gameplay of the upcoming FPS Doom Eternal, focusing on Battlemode.
Battlemode is an asymmetrical multiplayer mode pitching a Slayer against two player-controlled demons and an army of AI demons.
We get to see both the point of view of the Slayer and that of the demons, including the Marauder in the third match, which is pretty awesome.
While the demons only need to kill the Slayer once (which isn’t easy), the Slayer has to kill both demons to win a round. A match victory is decided with a best of five rounds rule.
When one of the demons dies, the other has to stay alive for 20 seconds before the first can come back (at half health).
Frictional Games, the developer behind critically acclaimed horror titles Penumbra, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and SOMA, has offered a tease of its next title, by way of an enigmatic new video discovered as part of an ongoing ARG.
The initial breadcrumb trail began over on NextFrictionalGame.com, a website the developer has used to tease all of its upcoming titles in the past, from The Dark Descent to now.
Astute fans initially noticed the site had been updated with the graphic of what appeared to be a pulsating foetus, and a bit of poking soon revealed a short, rather unremarkable video clip of rocks, purporting to be footage from Shetpe, a real village in Kazakhstan.
Is it a party if no one shows and you're left to pick at the charcuterie and drink the champagne by yourself? At some point, you just turn off the front lights and toss on Netflix, right?
The Game Developers Conference is still taking place in mid-March -- at least at the time of writing this article, anyway -- despite nearly every major exhibitor and presenter pulling out over health concerns related to the coronavirus. The list of absentee guests grew again today as Amazon, Activision-Blizzard, and Iron Galaxy all canceled their GDC appearances. [Update: Gearbox just canceled too.]
This trio joins other big-name companies such as Epic, Unity, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Facebook, Oculus, Sony, PUBG Corp, and Kojima Productions who have all opted to forgo attending GDC this year.
Now, all eyes are on GDC's organizers, as most people assume the convention will eventually be canceled altogether. That's obviously a worst-case scenario, and one they seem to be avoiding at absolutely all costs. As of now, GDC's official stance is that they're "closely monitoring" the coronavirus situation and will make a statement "if [their] assessment changes."
Anyone who wants an extra dash of nostalgia alongside the new Animal Crossing will be happy to hear that they can view the game through the camera settings of original.
One of the many details to come out of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons demo at PAX East is that there's a toggle to switch the camera angle to the viewpoint of the Animal Crossing on GameCube. The original had more of an overhead top-down look, whereas subsequent games have a lower and closer camera.
As the Nintendo rep in the video above points out, making the change is easy enough. Just click the right analog stick to get that classic view. Click again to revert. Click a third time, back to GameCube mode. Click again and you're back to that New Horizons hotness. Click another time and everyone will get sick of this bit. Yet another click and they'll forcibly take your Switch away.
There's a lot more being unraveled out of PAX East. USgamer rounded a good chunk of them up including: Kicks the Skunk sells a lot more than shoes, like handbags and purses; Tom Nook's rewards program includes cell phone cases; snapping turtles are among the many new species of water creatures; and welcome mats are a new furniture item.
Three weeks until the first proper Animal Crossing in eight years. It'll be wholesome and incredible no matter which angle you're viewing from.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Might Have Genders After All Among Other New Details From PAX East [USgamer]
That unsettling little teaser website for Frictional Games' next project is still hypnotically doing its thing, and fans are still connecting dots and looking for answers in an alternate reality game (ARG). We don't know what the new game is yet – not exactly – but we do have new footage to go off of.
An unlisted teaser video with gameplay was uploaded to Frictional's YouTube channel yesterday.
In the footage, a panicked woman reminds herself that "I am Tasi. I am still Tasi." She's going in and out of consciousness, and is looking for a man – someone who "must understand." For a few tantalizing seconds, she gets a full view of her surroundings. She's in a desert during a violent sandstorm.
That might not seem like a scene from a horror game, but the sound design definitely drives the point home. Fans are wondering if this could be another Amnesia game, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's new.
SOMA's existential crisis strikes fear in my heart to this day. I'd be down for that angle again.
It’s a longtime dream of mine to be extremely large and basically unkillable. I’ve yet to accomplish my goal in real life, but I will—mark my words. It’s not an exaggeration to say the possibilities in Dreams are endless. At last we’ve gotten our first look at Baldur’s Gate 3 and I—liker of both Baldur’s Gate and Divinity: Original Sin 2—am feeling quite swell about what we’ve seen, but RPS have even more interview goodies yet. In the gameplay reveal this week, Larian CEO Swen Vincke takes off his character’s boots and throws them at an enemy as a last-ditch escape manoeuvre. During an interview with RPS folk Matthew and Alice Bee, Vincke let on that, in Larian’s signature permissive dungeon master style, that’s far from the only thing you can chuck across the battlefield.

Update: The Game Developers Conference has been postponed to "later in the summer," the organization has announced. The news comes amid growing concerns over the widely-spreading coronavirus (COVID-19).
Original story follows...
As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread, many events are getting canceled due to health concerns. A number of upcoming Street Fighter 5 tournaments are getting axed for the same reasons.
Continue Reading at GameSpotFollowing the success of the Witcher TV series' first season (and, of course, the enduring popularity of a certain inescapable song), streaming service Netflix has continued to fan the flames of hype with an ever-increasing roll-call of cast members for season two. And now it's finally named the man who'll fill the shoes of Geralt of Rivia's friend and mentor, Vesemir.
Admittedly, it's probably not the name some fans were expecting/hoping to hear; recent rumours suggested that Mark Hamill had been offered the part of Vesemir (and Hamill himself expressed an interest in the role last year), but we know now that Danish actor Kim Bodnia will play "the Continent's oldest and most experienced Witcher", Vesemir, in season 2.
As someone who's into survival horror games and virtual reality, I've been burned many times before by titles that either don't make the most of the genre, or the medium, or sometimes both. There are a lot of middling-at-best VR horror experiences out there. I've learned to go in with modest expectations.
I have a pretty good feeling about Lies Beneath, though. The upcoming Oculus game from Gunheart developer Drifter Entertainment has such a neat comic-book-influenced style to stand on.
Lies Beneath is a horror adventure about a college student, Mae, who returns to her hometown of Slumber, Alaska only to find freaky monsters. Thankfully, she's got a hatchet (and a shotgun). The team drew inspiration from a range of artists including Mike Mignola, Bernie Wrightson, and Shintaro Kago.
As noted on the Oculus Blog, the game has been in production at Drifter for just under two years.
"Lies Beneath is a much more intimate, close-quarters game than our previous stuff precisely so that we bring everything into arm's reach," said creative director Brian Murphy. "As much as possible in this game, we tried to make it feel like if you could touch it with your hands, it would react naturally."
This week, Destructoid is made possible by KATANA KAMI: A Way of the Samurai Story, an isometric hack-and-slash dungeon crawler with over 100 different weapons, nine unique fighting styles, co-op, and the series' patented ability to betray or ally with the game's three factions. This is a sponsored post.
We already took a look back at the history of The Way of the Samurai series, but as KATANA KAMI takes place in a fantastical alternate history, now's a good time to also look back at various games that changed up the history books.

I've lost track of how many videos I've seen for Atomic Heart, and I'm not convinced the game can live up to fans' high expectations, but I am – and will continue to be – along for this wild ride. Here's a new one!
I'm at the point where I won't even mind if Atomic Heart isn't very fun to play – the killer-robot-filled alternate-universe Soviet Union backdrop is just so visually interesting. I want to explore this world and see all of the crazy sights the creator, Mundfish, dreamed up. That said, it looks fun too. I'll gladly smash bots with a sledgehammer and fight a circulatory system tree monster. They don't have to ask twice.
The release date for Atomic Heart is still firmly "TBA" on Steam and, as usual, the trailer has a disclaimer that "all game elements from the video can change." Gosh, I hope it all comes together cohesively.
Following the exit of several major exhibitors, the organizers of the Game Developers Conference said Friday that the show, originally scheduled to take place from March 16 to 20 in San Francisco, will be postponed until the summer due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
Earlier this week, a small but vocal group of what can only be described as “teabagging enthusiasts” made a discovery straight out of their darkest, knee joint-less nightmares: Overwatch’s Ana, a champion teabagger despite her advanced age, could no longer crouch over unconscious enemies.
Vertically-aligned boxes are beautiful. That’s the first thing I learned from NZXT’s H1 Mini PC, a new pre-configured gaming PC sporting the elegantly monolithic H1 mini-ITX case on the outside and impressive space economy on the inside.
How can anyone not like Kirby? For this week’s episode of Kotaku Splitscreen, I got my two cohosts to try out Kirby: Planet Robobot because I won a bet. Kirk has never played a Kirby game before, whereas Jason is just a skeptic. By the time they’ve beaten this game, they’ll both be dedicated Kirby fans, just like me.

The Games Developer Conference (GDC) is in a bit of an unprecedented situation this year, as a growing list of companies announce that they won't be attending amidst coronavirus concerns. A majority of the list is composed of large tech companies or triple-A game developers and publishers, which has left indie devs and journalists wondering if GDC is even still happening this year.
For now, GDC has been delayed to Summer 2020 and organizers are working to implement precautionary measures in order to hopefully diminish the chances of attendees getting sick. In a blog post, organizers have said that GDC details will be finalized "in the coming weeks" so we may not have to wait very long to get new event dates.
Important GDC 2020 Update https://t.co/EoReMGtZJJ
Recent weeks have seen numerous companies from the games industry--both big and small--drop out of this year's Game Developers Conference. This all stems from concerns related to COVID-19, more commonly known as the coronavirus, sparking speculation that the event itself could be canceled. Although the event hasn't been canceled, less than three weeks before it was scheduled to begin, GDC 2020 has officially been postponed and will now take place "later in the summer." A more specific date has not been revealed.
"After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March," a statement on the GDC website reads.
"Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we're genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.
Continue Reading at GameSpotWhile the first two months of 2020 have seen a few big-name games hit the market, this year has gotten off to a fairly quiet start, largely due to the spate of delays that were recently announced. That's all about to change in March, however--in fact, it's shaping up to be one of the most ridiculous March release schedules of all time. This month features a variety of highly anticipated releases for every platform, from the arrival of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to the long-awaited return of the Half-Life series.
Those aren't the only major titles coming out this month. Nioh 2, the sequel to Team Ninja's popular Dark Souls-inspired samurai game, will launch on March 13, while Ninja Theory's PvP brawler, Bleeding Edge, lands on March 24. Capping off the month is Persona 5 Royal, an expanded version of one of 2017's best games.
That's only a small taste of this month's releases. To give you a look at what lays ahead for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch, we've rounded up all the biggest games of March 2020 below. For a wider look at the titles still to come this year, be sure to check out our list of game release dates in 2020.
Continue Reading at GameSpotIt's always exciting to see how companies showcase their games at conventions, especially Nintendo, which tends to go all-out. At PAX East 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the game of the show for Nintendo and the booth is basically a bite-sized recreation of the island getaway. There's a little tent for your starting house, a flowing river, a campfire, a workbench, some forestry in the backdrop, and the rocks that look out to the ocean.
Fans are able to walk around and take pictures, and we had a chance to hang out at the booth ourselves. If you're lucky, you could catch Tom Nook, K.K. Slider, or Isabelle roaming around the booth space and get a picture with them, too. You can get a view of the booth from the show floor in a short video from my tweet on location:
