Mortal Kombat 11 owners will receive a free upgrade on next-gen konsoles

3 years 6 months ago

In addition to this morning's reveal of Kombat Pack 2, bringing Mileena, Rain, and John Rambo to the Mortal Kombat 11 roster. NetherRealm Studios has also announced that all current and new PS4 and Xbox One MK 11 players will receive a free upgrade to the respective next-gen platforms.

The next-gen version of Mortal Kombat 11 will feature various visual improvements, "significantly-improved" load times, and krisp 4K resolution. Kross-play will be supported between new and current gen platforms, so the playerbase will fortunately remain whole - a vital element of this endeavour.

Mileena, Rain, and Rambo confirmed for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, also coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X

3 years 6 months ago

NetherRealm Studios has revealed the existence of Kombat Pack 2 for its spine-ripping fighter Mortal Kombat 11. The new DLC bundle will see the return of MK veterans Mileena and Rain, alongside a very different kind of "veteran", action movie legend John J. Rambo.

John Rambo, star of the hyper-violent Rambo movies will be joining fellow action movie legends The Terminator and Robocop in MK 11. A new trailer reveals that NRS has secured both the likeness and the voice of Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone. I can't help but smile at this ridiculous addition, even if many in the MK faithful - myself included - are bored of MK 11's lame love affair with guns.

HoloVista review - a dark and dazzling critique of social media

3 years 6 months ago

As a super nerdy writer, the thing that I seek out most in games these days is quality writing, regardless of my own abilities. Some of the most interesting work in recent years has come from iOS games, particularly as they try to imitate the casual flow of instant messaging. One notable favourite of mine is Guildlings, a cutesy-looking adventure game that animates conversations brilliantly.

HoloVista takes this approachable nature to a whole new level. You play as Carmen, with your iOS device acting as the protagonist's personal phone, communicating with friends and family through messages and social media. Carmen's an aspiring architect who's finally grabbed a rung on the career ladder at a prestigious but secretive design firm.

The vapourwave aesthetic of this world is incredible, from bright neon to deep pastel colours. However, almost nothing is in motion in the game except for you and your words. The action is propelled by what you capture around you using your phone's camera, whether it's your apartment bedroom or in the fancy foyer waiting for your job interview. These images are then shared and discussed, either passively or in depth, with your friends and dear sister Inez.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories writer currently pitching a sequel

3 years 6 months ago

Sam Barlow, the writer and designer behind 2009 Silent Hill entry Shattered Memories, has quietly revealed that he is currently in the process of pitching a follow-up to the mind-fucking horror title.

Speaking on Twitter, Barlow mentioned that he was asked about the possibility of a Shattered Memories follow-up during a recent interview, but was unable to answer the question as he is in the process of pitching that very idea. Barlow also notes that this pitch is not his upcoming "Project A" title, currently in development at Half Mermaid Studios, which is a different game entirely.

Of course, Barlow pitching a sequel  does not guarantee that a sequel is getting made, but it will sure raise the hopes of the Silent Hill faithful, who have been very frustrated by the lack of news from Konami in recent years, despite numerous rumours and whispers within the industry. Shattered Memories is certainly one of the more tightly held entries within the Silent Hill franchise, and a follow-up, from the original designer no less, would be a grim delight.

In the meantime, don't forget that Silent Hill 4: The Room is now available on PC via GOG.com

Those wonderful Pikmin short movies are now on YouTube

3 years 6 months ago

The recent Nintendo Treehouse Live deep dive into the upcoming Pikmin 3 Deluxe really sold me on picking up the title for Switch even if I still have it for Wii U with most of the DLC. The local co-op, advanced control options, and playable side stories are more than enough reason for me to jump back into it. I l adore the original on the Wii U enough to drop some cash on the three short animated films Nintendo produced to promote its release.

As we told you a few days ago, Nintendo is delisting those videos from the eShop. Thankfully, unlike items that get delisted from other Nintendo digital distribution platforms, these are more readily available now that they're finding a second life on YouTube.

Mafia: Definitive Edition Update Adds Noir Mode and HUD Options

3 years 6 months ago

The first post-launch update for Mafia: Definitive Edition released today and adds new features and options to the action-adventure remake, developer Hangar 13 announced.

The first new feature is Noir Mode, which turns the entire game’s visual to black and white. It includes both gameplay and cinematics, and can be toggled on and off in the options menu.

The in-game HUD can now be customizable with the update, allowing players to turn in-world main objective markers, mini-map enemy markers, and navigation features like turn-by-turn instructions and the mini-map GPS on or off.

There is also the Minimal HUD mode which hides HUD icons such as the mini-map, speedometer, and objective text.

Hangar 13 said it added “a couple new gameplay features” to the game’s Free Ride mode, but did not  detail what exactly. The Free Ride mode allows players to explore Lost Heaven without objectives but still be able to find collectible and other secrets.

The update also fixes certain issues such as cars not unlocking from Lucas Bertone missions, a special assassination animation not triggering in The Saint and The Sinner mission, and certain cinematics occasionally showing a black screen instead.

Mafia: Definitive Edition and the the update are now available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Autocorrect Creator Releases His First iOS Game

3 years 6 months ago

Ken Kocienda, a former Apple software engineer and creator of the autocorrect feature, has released his first iOS game, Up Spell. Appropriately (and perhaps sinisterly) enough, it requires spelling words correctly.

spell

As reported by Tech Crunch, Up Spell challenges players to use a Scrabble-like collection of letters to spell out as many words as possible in two minutes. You can check out the trailer on YouTube.

Kocienda, who has never made an iOS app before Up Spell, fixated on creating a word game that would acknowledge proper names and slang. “Many games accept words like PHARAOH and PYRAMID, but not NILE or EGYPT. This doesn’t make sense to me. These are all words!,” Kocienda told Tech Crunch. An example of how Kocienda’s work influences gameplay is that a player can spell “s’ mores,” which involves an apostrophe, something many word games may not support.

[caption id="attachment_241903" align="alignnone" width="720"]ios game A screenshot from Up Spell, from Ken Kocienda, the creator of autocorrect on iOS.[/caption]

The mental strain of 2020 was also a key influence in the design of Up Spell, according to Kocienda.

Phasmophobia has certainly possessed a lot of players

Ghost hunting simulation Phasmophobia has certainly scared up a rising player base. Despite the somewhat janky quality of its early access version, folks seem to be pretty possessed by the supernatural spooks. It’s been climbing in concurrent Steam players and Twitch viewers this month, leaving even known weenies like me curious enough to consider playing with friends.

Tell Us: How Do You Feel About Nintendo's Lack of Integrated Voice Chat?

3 years 6 months ago
Hey, listen! We love hearing your feedback on Nintendo Voice Chat, and now you once again have the chance to actually let us hear your beautiful voices on NVC. At the bottom of this article, you will find an option that lets you share a brief video with us and the IGN community, powered by audio and video commenting tool, Yappa. We just learned Monster Hunter Rise will not have integrated voice chat for the Nintendo Switch, or via the Nintendo Switch Online App. We want as many NVC fans as we can get to answer this question for next week's episode: How do you feel about the Nintendo Switch not having an integrated party chat feature, like PS4 and Xbox One have? Does it affect you much, if at all?  Bonus: Have you used the Nintendo Switch Online App for voice chat or integrated voice chat in games it's available for, like Fortnite? Let us know!

Here's how you can participate:

  • Create a Yappa account or sign in with a Facebook, Google, Disqus, or LinkedIn account.
  • Look for the video commenting box at the bottom of our articles on both desktop and mobile web. Note that the feature is currently not available on our mobile apps.
  • Hit the green bar with the speech bubble icon, allow access to your mic and camera if your permission settings require that step.
  • You can choose between audio and video recording. We’d prefer video to see your face (and only your face, please -- although Samus and Master Chief helmets or God of War face paint, etc. are cool with us), but you can use the audio-only option if you’re having a bad hair day.
  • When you can see your face, hit record to start recording your video. Hit stop when you’re done. You can leave a message that's up to 45 seconds long.
  • You can rewatch your video and then choose to cancel or post.
  • If you'd rather upload a video you recorded separately, you can use the Upload Media function to do so.

The Sims 4 is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a range of new in-game freebies

3 years 6 months ago

It's currently Hispanic Heritage Month in the US, and The Sims 4 is celebrating with a bunch of colourful, culturally inspired free in-game items, including recipes, clothing, and outdoor decor.

Introducing the free new update on the official Sims 4 website, EA explained that its latest additions are the result of a brainstorming session by SOMOS EA, an employee resource group focussed on "advancing EA's diversity and inclusion by ensuring a culture where Hispanic/Latinx employees can thrive."

The result of this brainstorming, says EA, was a list of items members of the group felt best represented them, their families, and their various cultures - and a selection of these are now available in-game for players to utilise in their day-to-day activities and designs.

Baldur's Gate 3's Campfire Feature Will Feel Like Coming Home For Dragon Age: Origins Fans

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Baldur's Gate 3 is now out in Early Access and RPG fans are diving right in. Whether you're a CRPG fan or a newcomer to the world of Dungeons & Dragons, the character creation and the story appeals on a mass level. One aspect of the latest D&D adventure that I'm wholly in love with, however, is a feature that made Dragon Age: Origins so deeply personal – a good 'ol fashioned campfire.

In Origins, players could interact with all of their companions, without being restricted by the party number limitation. This helped players develop friendships and romantic relationships with the various companions, and allowed fans to deeply immerse themselves in the daily lives of Thedas residents. The campfires in Baldur's Gate 3 work in a similar fashion, and it's here that I find myself anxious to get back to.

The latest look comes by way of the official The Witcher Netflix account and it shows off a Yennefer that has definitely seen better days:

Season two will see Ciri and Geralt return to his childhood home, Kaer Morhen, where he trained as a witcher growing up. Believing that Yennefer died during the Battle of Sodden, Geralt seeks safety for the young Ciri in a place that he trusts.

Netflix supplied the new season's official synopsis earlier this week, saying:

Why You Should Buy PS5 And Xbox Series X/S

3 years 6 months ago

The launch of new consoles is always exciting. Not only does new hardware feel great to connect to your TV for the first time, but it also unlocks the potential for the games we'll collectively experience over the next several years. With the new hardware just over the horizon, I reached out to both PlayStation and Xbox to hear their cases for why upgrading to next-gen hardware is worth the investment.

For many, when the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S release the second week of November, it will mark the dawn of a new era of gaming. However, plenty of others will be sticking with their existing systems for various reasons. With so few next-gen exclusive titles across the two platforms, many are content to hold off on upgrading. Xbox has said that its first-party titles will continue to release on both Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One in the near future, and on the PlayStation side, big titles like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West have been confirmed to release on PlayStation 4 as well.

Check Out These Gorgeous Screenshots of Destiny 2: Beyond Light’s New Exotics

3 years 6 months ago

Destiny 2 continues to be one of the most beautiful games out there, even now over six years since the original game’s release. With a next-gen and a new expansion on the way, nothing appears to be stopping Destiny 2 from continuing to look objectively pretty.

The new exotics revealed today not only have very cool sounding perks, they are also among the prettiest and sickest added to the game so far.

All three classes are getting a new exotic helmet and gauntlet armor, and there are at least four new exotic weapons that will be obtainable as well. I’m not sure if any of them are tied to the raid, but if I had to take it guess it’s that Stasis-themed grenade launcher.

Although it’s definitely looks sweet, hopefully I’m wrong and there’s a yet to be revealed weapon out there because more is always better.

Anyway I’m getting off topic. Click the pictures below to get an up close and personal look at the gorgeous new exotics coming in Destiny 2: Beyond Light on Nov. 10.
