Mortal Kombat 11 gets Mileena, Rain and… Rambo

3 years 6 months ago

NetherRealm has announced what's next for Mortal Kombat 11, and it includes Rambo as a DLC character.

Rambo, voiced by Sylvester Stallone, is joined by fan-favourite Mileena and half god Rain in Kombat Pack 2.

Fans will be delighted to finally see Mileena in Mortal Kombat 11 after nagging NetherRealm boss Ed Boon about her for so long. Rain is a cool addition, too. And Rambo shouldn't come as much surprise for a game that already has the Terminator and Robocop.

Nintendo Download: Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?

3 years 6 months ago

Everyone is packing in the Switch eShop releases for the holidays! It's a huge day today with over 40 games hitting the marketplace: good luck sorting through them all.

The marquee releases this time around are I Am Dead, The Survivalists, FIFA 21 Legacy Edition and Ikenfell. The Switch is also welcoming the pair of Prinny games on the system on October 13, which were announced way earlier in the year. On that same day, Minecraft is coming to Smash Ultimate.

So while Nintendo doesn't have a whole lot planned (yet) in terms of software, the Switch platform itself is fairly healthy in terms of 2020 offerings. As usual, there's a mix of both old and new in the below list, which is rolling out from today through October 14.

Consider the Snapewife

3 years 6 months ago

In the mid to late 2000s, Snapewives were the object of Harry Potter fandom scorn. A Snapewife, for those of you who didn’t spend your formative years on HP-focused LiveJournal communities, is a woman who is overly invested in Severus Snape, the antihero of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, often to the point of…

Sega teases Dreamcast mini

3 years 6 months ago

Ah, the Dreamcast. Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Soulcalibur and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 were among my favourites in the early 2000s. Alas, Sega's ahead of its time console fell by the wayside, and the console war was never the same again.

But, what's this? A whisper the Dreamcast may come back - via the mini treatment.

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Sega's mini chief Yosuke Okunari discussed what's next for the company's mini range, having already released a Mega Drive mini in 2019 and, in Japan only so far, the Game Gear micro.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe's new Olimar missions are fun but lightweight

3 years 6 months ago

Pikmin 3 includes a handful of extra side-missions starring original series protagonists Olimar and Louie, showing what they were up to while the game's main campaign takes place elsewhere. But while these are a nice addition, they're not hugely substantial.

Each mission essentially acts as another time-limited treasure hunt of the type found in the game's existing Challenge mode. Four of these act as a prologue to the events of the game, and each begins with a brief text message from the President, Olimar and Louie's boss last seen in Pikmin 2, ordering the tiny spacefaring duo to go collect more loot.

You then get to see a piece of Pikmin 3 I'd wager a lot of people missed first time around - the funny videos starring Olimar which you could unlock via an extremely laborious collectible hunt that required multiple save files and a website only accessible via the Wii U console's Internet Browser. Or, y'know, you could just go watch them on YouTube.

Nintendo is going to sell Pokemon Sword and Shield 'complete editions' for $90 each

3 years 6 months ago

As you know by now, first-party Nintendo games rarely go down in value in the first few years of their existence. The same can be said about Pokemon Sword and Shield, which is still rolling with a $60 MSRP. It looks like the upcoming "complete editions" are going to be using that same tactic.

In case you missed it, The Pokemon Company announced recently that there was going to be a physical bundle for both Sword and Shield that also packed in their accompanying season pass. Thanks to an Amazon listing for Pokemon Sword, we now know exactly how much that's going to cost: $90. In short, that's literally just the price of the game itself and the actual digital pass ($30), which comes with two DLC expansions.

So basically, if you prefer physical and haven't picked up the new Pokemon game yet, you can either opt for this package or the original run and just buy the pass manually. The box says that "no separate download" is required for the expansion pass. Also note that this new edition comes with 100 Poke Balls and a Pikachu/Eevee uniform (which were originally pre-order bonuses).

The "Game + Expansion Pass" physical bundles will be released on November 6.

Twitter users DetectiveWaffle and GlitchHunterz each managed to get into a private match.

Private matches is a feature called for by the battle royale's community ever since Warzone launched, but it's so far not been released. Players expect it to come out soon, though, given some have managed to get it working.

Minecraft movie pushed beyond its 2022 release date

3 years 6 months ago

Given that it is pretty much the greatest-selling video game of all-time, it's no surprise to anybody that Minecraft was tipped to be adapted for the silver screen. However, it seems that Steve and friends will have to hold on for their cinematic debut, as Minecraft the movie has been officially pushed back.

The delay is part of Warner Bros. current conundrum regarding is movie release slate for the coming years. As is the case for all major studios, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has played havoc with the production of several major motion pictures, sending release schedules and launch projections into chaos.

Originally slated for a 2022 theatrical release, Minecraft has now been taken off the calendar completely, as Warner Bros. attempts to reschedule production and release dates for a number of upcoming heavy-hitters, including The Suicide Squad, The Batman, Dune, Black Adam, and the fourth entry in The Matrix franchise.

Baldur's Gate 3's first patch has fixed several crash bugs

3 years 6 months ago

Wizard stuff in Baldur's Gate 3

Larian Studios slapped a wee hotfix on Baldur’s Gate 3 last night, addressing some of the more pressing technical issues. Most notably, it fixed a number of crash bugs in the fantasy RPG. This is only the first patch on another journey through early access for the makers of Divinity: Original Sin 2.

“We never imagined such a huge influx of players in what we had envisioned being a relatively modest party of Early Access players,” Larian said. “But we’re up to the challenge, and we’ve been listening!”

Star Wars: Squadrons has no plans for post-launch content

3 years 6 months ago

With most games that Electronic Arts publish these days, I tend to just assume that there will be some form of extra content or microtransaction lying in wait for me. I’m pleasantly surprised, however, to discover that’s not the case with Star Wars: Squadrons. The spacey flight sim came out last week, and what we got was the whole package, because EA says they have no plans to add post-launch DLC in the future.

“Never say never, so to speak, but as far as our philosophy goes we’re not trying to treat the game as a live service,” creative director Ian Frazier told UploadVR.

Ubisoft hit For Honor is coming to next-gen consoles with a free upgrade and a full progression import

3 years 6 months ago

For Honor was released all the way back in 2017, but Ubisoft Montreal has been steadily supporting it since then, to the point where it's outlasted many other similar online games.

It's kind of Ubisoft's thing lately, a service they've also extended to long-running titles like Rainbow Six Siege. So it was kind of inevitable for them to announce that For Honor would come to the next-generation, and the transition is going to be fairly smooth.

Ubisoft announced the news on Twitch, noting that the Xbox Series S version of the game is targeting 1080p resolution, with PS5 and Xbox Series X hitting 4K. "Current-gen game owners on PS4 and Xbox One" will be able to play For Honor for free, with the option to transfer over "all of your purchases and inventory automatically." 60FPS gameplay is being targeted "for all next-gen consoles in early December."

These updates will be playable "at each respective console launch," so November 10 for Xbox Series S/X and November 12 for PS5. The unavailability of 60FPS gameplay right away isn't great, but it's probably a casualty of the current global climate. A month isn't that long to wait, especially if you're upgrading for free.

Check out the surprisingly hard rockin' intro to Go! Go! 5 Jigen Game Neptune reVerse

3 years 6 months ago

Compile Heart has released the intro movie to the next release to Go! Go! 5 Jigen Game Neptune reVerse, the next release in the Hyperdimension Neptunia anime RPG franchise, which also happen to be Nep-Nep's first foray into next-gen gaming!

To be honest, it's a little disappointing, consisting of no more than a bunch of hi-tech screen wipes and some standard character portraits. But at least our ears can enjoy the guitar-heavy vibes of title track "For Share!!", composed and arranged by araKEN and performed by Japanese techno-rockers Zwei.

Super Nintendo World set to open in Japan in spring 2021

3 years 6 months ago

Universal Studios Japan has announced that it is finalising plans for the opening of Super Nintendo World, a brand new section hosted within the blockbuster theme park that will pay homage to the colourful and iconic style of the Super Mario franchise.

Patrons will be able to walk around life-size recreations of the fantasy worlds featured in various Super Mario titles, complete with themed rides and attractions. In addition, a new Mario Cafe & Store will open in Universal Studios Japan's Hollywood section, offering Nintendo-themed food and beverages, as well as an array of exclusive merchandise.

Super Nintendo World has been in the works for some years and was originally scheduled to debut in time for the 2020 summer season. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted these plans, with Universal Studios now stating that the new attraction will open in "spring 2021". I personally still think this sounds very optimistic, but with the already-postponed Olympic Games re-scheduled for summer 2021, corporations are expected to take some major - some would say ill-advised - risks as we enter the new year.

You should play Demon Turf's demo before it disappears

Steam’s Game Festival: Autumn Edition is now in full swing, and it’s offering us lucky lot the chance to play hundreds of free game demos until next Tuesday, October 13th. I’ve had a good rummage through the store and plucked out Demon Turf, a stylish 3D platformer with 2D characters where you play as Beebz, a raucous young demon with an attitude. Your main aim? To crush all the demon nasties and become the Demon Queen.

"No plans" for Star Wars: Squadrons DLC or extra modes, EA says

3 years 6 months ago

Ever since the Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot box fiasco, it feels like EA has been trying to win back popular support for its Star Wars licence, with Respawn's Fallen Order and Motive Studios' Squadrons choosing to avoid microtransactions entirely. Squadrons' release so far seems to have gone down well with the community, and many fans have requested Motive continues to support the game with additional multiplayer modes. Unfortunately, it sounds like that isn't happening.

In an interview with UploadVR, creative director Ian Frazier confirmed the team is not treating Squadrons as a live service. "We don't want to say 'it's almost done!' and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days," he added. "So we've tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, 'you've paid the $40, this is the game and it's entirely self-contained. We're not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition.'"

That sounds like a pretty firm no as things stand, and if you were one of the people hoping for a map on a planet surface, that seems doubly unlikely.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has a Field of View slider on all platforms

3 years 6 months ago

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has a Field of View (FOV) slider on all platforms, Treyarch has announced.

This slider - usually the preserve of PC gaming - lets you define the height and width of the player's view in settings.

2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does not have a FOV slider on console, which led many to accuse PC players of having an unfair advantage during cross-play. So it's great to see this feature come to the console version of Black Ops Cold War - and it will be in the Black Ops Cold War beta that kicks off tonight on PlayStation 4.

Capcom says Monster Hunter Rise is running on a regular Switch, is mum on the existence of a Switch Pro

3 years 6 months ago

I don't think it's unbelievable that Monster Hunter Rise is running on a standard Switch, but a lot of folks are skeptical. Well, producer Ryōzō Tsujimoto recently spoke to Eurogamer to clear the air on that.

According to Tsujimoto, everything we saw these past few weeks was running on a standard Switch. When asked about a potential Switch Pro, he stated: "Well, obviously we have no idea whatsoever what the plans would be in that direction, but even at the moment you actually have two different Switch hardwares you're targeting - you've got the the original Switch which has the docking mode, so that's something we've already borne in mind to make sure that the game isn't making any undue assumptions on the hardware owned by the player."

"That direction" that he's referring to is a Switch Pro. While it could happen at some point (or he's bound to an NDA), Monster Hunter Rise was in development for way longer than the Pro would have been in the works. Tsujimoto also clarifies that Rise has been in the works for "about four years," and the company specifically asked the director of Monster Hunter Generations to make a title "for the next portable," which would eventually be the Switch.

He cites porting the RE Engine to Switch as a "new challenge," but given that it is a first-party engine after all, the developers know those challenges inside and out and were able to adapt. Tsujimoto says that in the end, they hit a target of "a comfortable 30 frames per second."

Valorant's new character won't arrive until later in Act 3

3 years 6 months ago

Riot Games have announced Valorant‘s next agent will be arriving a little later than planned, so they can prioritise getting their cold new map ready for the beginning of Act 3. This Act kicks off on October 13th, with the new character joining the tactical FPS a couple weeks later on October 27th. The devs have even given us our first look at her – at least, I’m pretty sure that’s her above. It’d be weird for them to just whack in an image of a rando.

Sega's Next Micro Console Could Be a Dreamcast Mini

3 years 6 months ago
Sega creative producer Yosuke Okunari has suggested that the next micro console could be a Dreamcast Mini. As reported by Siliconera, Okunari spoke to Famitsu magazine about the future of the mini-console range and suggested that Sega - among other things - is considering a mini version of the cult 1999 console. "I think for the next one, we may go with a concept close to the Mega Drive Mini," Okunari explains. "If I have to say some names, it could be an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/03/sega-announces-palm-sized-game-gear-micro-console"] Okunari also mentioned that Sega is considering "projects that nobody has imagined" for the next micro-console, and added that "the project scope will be much bigger as we gaze upon the world" as the company moves forward with the micro-console range. This suggests that the next devices could launch in the west as well as Japan. The palm-sized Game Gear Micro was announced back in June of 2020 and launched in Japan on October 6. Four colourways of the mini console were available, each with a separate selection of classic games such as Gunstar Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog. We reviewed the Sega Mega Drive Mini last year, scoring it a 9 and calling it "as close to perfect as any retro all-in-one mini-console has come so far." If it does end up becoming a reality, hopefully, the Dreamcast Mini can follow in its footsteps! [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan Oloman is a freelance writer for IGN. Follow him on Twitter.

EA offers explanation for why not all your FIFA 21 progress transfers from current-gen to next-gen

3 years 6 months ago

EA has offered an explanation for why not all your FIFA 21 progress transfers from current-gen to next gen.

EA is using a system called Dual Entitlement to offer free next-gen upgrades. It means you can upgrade your copy of FIFA 21 on PS4 to PS5, or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X at no extra cost.

This is good news, of course, given some publishers are not offering a free next-gen upgrade. However, it's worth noting that not all your FIFA 21 progress will transfer from current-gen to next-gen.

Sega vaguely mentions that we could eventually see a Dreamcast Mini and now we all want one

3 years 6 months ago

A theoretical Dreamcast Mini loaded with Sonic Adventure, the hard-to-find Power Stone titles, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, SoulCalibur, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and more? It sounds like a dream come true.

Well, a lot of folks have been anticipating the march of more minis for a while, it's just a matter of when. And while Sega has mentioned the Dreamcast Mini by name, they've significantly moved the goalposts on "when."

Speaking to Famitsu (as translated by Nintendo Life), Sega creative producer Yosuke Okunari notes that in their quest of "considering" more concepts like the Genesis Mini, ideas like the SG1000 and Dreamcast have been brought up. Okunari also says that while the Game Gear Micro is "only available in Japan," the next mini project will have a "much greator" scope, and likely arrive worldwide.

This is all very "planning stages" stuff here, as Okunari explains that even if there was another micro-console, it would be at least another year out due to the "high cost and time" factors involved. So you're saying there's a chance?
