Ring in 21 Years of the PS2 With a Sick Remix of Its Iconic Theme

3 years 1 month ago

It was 21 years ago this very day that the PS2 released in Japan, giving birth to the most successful, and arguably most innovative, console of all time. And while we celebrate its technological features and amazing games, there is no doubt that one of the first things that come to mind when you think of this Sony console is its catchy theme.

To this day, hearing the simple chime of a PS2 start-up is enough to bring back a wave of nostalgia that could cripple even the most emotionally closed-off gamers. Twitter user and composer Carter Harrell couldn’t seem to agree with that statement more.

As you can see in the video above, Harrel uses his musical and editing skills to remix the beloved theme into a track worthy of playing at anyone’s 21st birthday party. If you loved that track, be sure to check out the rest of his Twitter as well, as he’s known for remixes load of games with his own funky style.

MLB The Show 21's Stadium-Creator Lets You Make Anything, Including The Field Of Dreams

3 years 1 month ago

PlayStation Studios has provided new details on the stadium-creator mode for MLB The Show 21. Exclusive to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions of the baseball game, the stadium-creator is exactly what it sounds like.

Using a catalog of more than 1,000 unique pieces, players can create whatever kind of baseball stadium they want, and it's not limited to reality. As the video below shows, you can create a stadium with fantastical elements like floating structures in the sky.

You can also create a wonky and weird stadium where the outfield walls don't line up in any predictable way. There seems to be a great variety of options available, including a corn field background so you can create your version of the Field of Dreams.

Whatever you create, the stadiums can be used in the Diamond Dynasty and Franchise modes, and you can share your creations with the community and play stadiums created by other people.

As mentioned, the stadium-creator is only available on next-gen, so those on PS4 and Xbox One will miss out. Another next-gen exclusive feature is 60fps support.

New Guilty Gear Strive Trailer Reveals Anji And I-No Gameplay

3 years 1 month ago

Developer Arc System Works has dropped a new Guilty Gear Strive trailer that showcases some gameplay for two of the 2D fighter's latest roster additions: Anji Mito and I-No.

Both characters are iconic to the Guilty Gear franchise, with Anji first appearing in the sequel title Guilty Gear X and I-No showing up as a boss in the follow-up, 2002's Guilty Gear X2. Neither were playable in the game's recent beta, so this is the first look at them in action.

The video shows both characters' movesets. There's a brief Anji montage before the video switches over to I-No, who pummels opponents with her mint-colored Yamaha-looking guitar.

Guilty Gear Strive was pushed out of its April 9 release date so that Arc System Works could "polish some aspects of the game" like online lobbies and server stability following the beta's conclusion. The 2D fighter now drops on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on June 11.

Survival adventure The Eternal Cylinder is wonderfully, dazzlingly bizarre

3 years 1 month ago

Do you ever have that dream where a giant metal rolling pin is rumbling across the world, destroying everything in its path? You know, the dream where you're a strange two-legged Spore creature which can change shape and gain abilities by inhaling other creatures through its trunk. The one with the red and purple alien planet, and the giant chattering teeth enemy, and the huge insect creatures. Oh, hang on a moment, it's not a dream! Silly me. It's a game: The Eternal Cylinder.

It's a game by Chilean developer Ace Team, which burst onto the scene with the strikingly surreal Zeno Clash in 2009 (and then Rock of Ages after). Remember that? The Eternal Cylinder is so similar! It's a kaleidoscopically colourful and bizarre world full of huge creatures a bit like snails and insects, and some I just have no idea what they're supposed to be. But here they are, in a world of big stone towers and beams of light, and strange planets in the background. And dominating everything: a terrifyingly massive metal cylinder that moves.

This is how you wake up in the game. You are a small two-legged creature with a trunk and a grand purpose, you're told, and the very second you come to life, you have to run from the cataclysmic cylinder rumbling behind you. We're talking about a horizon-spanning thing here, which destroys absolutely anything in its path. You, a relative flea to its massiveness, do not stand a chance. Eventually, however, it stops, and when it does, you can begin nosing around.

Marvel’s Avengers Gets Next-Gen Capabilities Overview Trailer

3 years 1 month ago

A new trailer has been released for Marvel’s Avengers’ next gen versions, offering an overview of everything the updated ports will boast.

Streamed through the official Marvel’s Avengers YouTube account on Mar. 4, the trailer runs down the list of improvements offered on next-gen versions of the games as a service title. The next gen versions of the game will be available Mar. 18, with those who purchased the game on PS4 or Xbox One able to upgrade to the new versions free of charge.

In addition to faster load times and higher resolution textures, the next gen ports will also feature improved environmental destruction effects across all of Marvel’s Avengers’ areas and characters. Likewise, Cross-Gen multiplayer will also be implemented, meaning players can continue to play with friends who own the PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game even if they upgrade.

These improvements are all shown in action via short snippets of cutscenes and gameplay segments. Sparks fly and particle effects glow as characters wreak havoc against enemies, all while the game runs at 60 fps in glorious HD.

It’s a short and simple trailer, but one which gets the job done in showing off what the next gen versions of Marvel’s Avengers will offer. The full trailer can be viewed down below.

Apex Legends Chaos Theory Patch Notes Released, Lots Of Quality Of Life Updates

3 years 1 month ago

Respawn has released the full patch notes for the Apex Legends Chaos Theory Collection Event update, which will launch on March 9 alongside the battle royale's release on Switch. There are a lot of substantial changes in this update.

The really big stuff is displayed in the trailer for the Chaos Theory Collection Event: Caustic's town takeover is replacing Kings Canyon's Water Treatment, Heat Shields are being added as a solution for temporarily surviving outside the ring, Bangalore is getting an heirloom, and a new Ring Fury limited-time mode will replace standard Trios and Duos. But there are tons of quality-of-life changes beyond these ones which will have significant impacts on Apex Legends' in-match meta.

Changes To Characters

This update takes a stab at reworking the defender class, with balance changes for Wattson, Caustic, Gibraltar, and Rampart. The change to Wattson--she now passively regenerates shields, similarly to how Octane regenerates health--is an interesting one. As the smallest defender, Wattson is the only one to take extra damage on account of her Low Profile perk. Assumedly, this update is to address that weakness, stacking on top of the shield regeneration provided by her Intercept Pylon to further solidify her as someone who always bunkers down. She'll likely now be able to survive just a little bit longer, passively healing between fights as she reestablishes her defenses.

Marvel's Avengers is increasing the grind required to level up in next update

3 years 1 month ago

Developer Crystal Dynamics has announced it'll be making it harder to level up in Marvel's Avengers as part of the game's next update.

Writing on the Marvel's Avengers website, Crystal Dynamics explained the aim of its upcoming XP rework is to replace the "straight line" levelling system currently employed by the game with a levelling curve. This will result in players needing more XP to level up in-game from level 25 onward, with the amount increasing as the level 50 cap draws closer, meaning it'll take additional time to reach higher character levels.

While it's tempting to read the increased grind as a cynical attempt at keeping players embroiled in the Avengers' live service game for longer, Crystal Dynamics insists the goal is to fix pacing issues with the existing levelling system, arguing the speed the game currently awards skill points "may be confusing and overwhelming" to newer players. "We want each decision to invest in a skill or Heroic to be more meaningful", it writes.

Madden 21 Patch Notes: Franchise Updates And Bug Fixes Are Here

3 years 1 month ago

The new Madden NFL 21 patch that introduces a series of Franchise mode updates and more is now available on platforms. The big takeaways include the Franchise mode updates, along with fixes for QB freezing, missing Pro Bowl active abilities, and problems with MUT's UI.

There are separate patches for the PS5/Xbox Series X|S editions of the game, as well as the PS4/Xbox One and PC and Stadia versions.

On next-gen consoles, quarterbacks should no longer freeze during certain play-action plays, while the issue that could cause QBs to repeat an animation is now fixed. There was also a problem when the receiver would run back toward the line of scrimmage during a zig route, but this issue is now fixed with the update.

For Franchise mode, players can look forward to improvements to trade logic and player value, along with a new feature called "League History" that tracks the progress of your Franchise. Notably, this will be the final update for Franchise mode in Madden 21. EA Sports has acknowledged that the game's Franchise mode did not live up to expectations for everyone, and the studio is promising that Madden 22's Franchise mode will be better.

For the PS4/Xbox One/PC/Stadia version of Madden 21, the March 4 patch also fixes QB freezing issues, while it also fixes rusher logic in some punt situations. More specifically, it has been too easy to have punts blocked by AI rushers inside the 5-yard line, so this has been changed. Additionally, the update fixes a problem with the hit stick not working properly.

New Dragon Ball Demon Breaker Trailer Breaks Down The Upcoming Demo

3 years 1 month ago

Dragon Ball Demon Breaker is a fan-driven project that aims to revitalize the Dragon Ball franchise in the gaming space and a new demo is on the way soon. From the team over at SaiyaSlash, the upcoming game is a hack 'n slash adventure that places players in the role of Trunks. A Dragon Ball Demon Breaker demo trailer has arrived ahead of the early play period dropping this March to tease fans of the anime about what's ahead.

Like most demos, the Dragon Ball Demon Breaker early access period will be a limited portion of the game for gamers to try out. It will allow those interested a chance to check out what it's like to become Trunks as he faces off against hordes of demons when taking on Saiyan Palace.

The demo trailer above (via GameRant) is just a small tease starring Future Trunks and shows off that players will be able to take to battle with his base form and his Super Saiyan form. Being able to swap between the two forms seems effortless enough, though I wish we could have seen more features in the trailer since most of this centers around things we've already known.

The New iPad Air Gets A Nice Discount Ahead Of The Weekend

3 years 1 month ago

The fourth-generation iPad Air is an excellent device that leaves the older design of the base iPad and adopts that of the iPad Pro. Right now, it's also on sale at Amazon. The 64GB iPad Air 4 is $570 (was $600) and the 256GB iPad Air 4 is $680 (was $750). Those aren't the biggest discounts in the world, but Apple products rarely go on sale for less.

All five colours are available at Amazon right now, though the silver version is only available with 64GB at this moment. I currently own the 64GB model, and I've found it to be plenty of space, especially if you use it for entertainment purposes. Netflix, other streaming services, and even your iTunes Store purchases can be streamed, so you don't actually need to store your library on the device. Unless you want to save a lot of high-quality photos, use the iPad Air for work, or play a lot of games, you'll likely be good with 64GB.

If you're looking for iPad Air 4 accessories, there are two major ones that are worth getting depending on how you want to use the device. The Apple Magic Keyboard is currently $200 (down from $300), while the Apple Pencil 2 is $125. The keyboard helps turn the iPad Air 4 into more of a laptop-like device, while the Apple Pencil 2 is great for artists and can be charged by connecting magnetically to the side of the iPad.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate First Look At New Monster Hunter Mii Costumes

3 years 1 month ago

The latest fighter to join the Super Smash Bros. roster is available today with Pyra and her alternate form, Mythra. Game director Masahiro Sakurai showed off what the latest arrival brings to the fighting game, including a new stage and some more sprites for players to enjoy. Also revealed, outside of the Xenoblade focus, were the new Monster Hunter-inspired Mii costumes.

We've had some pretty cool Mii costumes in the past, even if previous revelations led to the disappointment that the actual characters themselves weren't arriving (we're still mourning the unofficial inclusion of Undertale), and the latest additions arrive ahead of Monster Hunter Rise.

In the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate showcase (at time marker 31:56), we see the different direction that Nintendo decided to take when introducing the newest Mii costumes, pivoting away from Xenoblade to celebrate Monster Hunter. The four newest costumes include:

BioShock Movie Director Talks About Why The Film Was Canceled

3 years 1 month ago

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski has spoken about the cancelation of his BioShock movie that was in the works a long time ago. Speaking to Collider, Verbinski said he was in trouble from the very beginning, as he pitched the movie as a R-rated film that needed a gigantic budget. The executives at Universal apparently balked.

"It was strange, my first meeting at Universal on BioShock was sitting in a room and saying, 'Hey guys, this is a $200 million R-rated movie.' And it was silent. I remember my agent going, 'Why did you say that?' I'm like, because it is," he said. "Why just even trying to kill a movie you haven't even started? That's before getting a scripted before anything. I'm just I just want to be clear. And I think everybody at the studio was like,'Well, yeah, okay, maybe. Wow, no. It's big, we know.'"

According to Verbinski, Universal "chickened out" and didn't agree to Verbinski's idea to make an R-rated movie with a huge budget. Verbinski said Universal might have been wary to greenlight BioShock because 2009's Watchmen had just released and it struggled at the box office as an R-rated film with a big budget.

"So, there was a little bit of, these movies need to be PG-13. If they cost that much, they need to be PG-13," he said.

Overall, Verbinski said it was a "glorious waste of time" working on the BioShock movie. It's too bad, he said, because BioShock has a great story. He also teased that he was thinking about an idea that would have given viewers the opportunity to see both endings.
