Epic vs Apple emails special - it's the Eurogamer News Cast!

2 years 11 months ago

Wow! Just... wow! What a week for video game news it's been. The Epic versus Apple trial kicked off this week and it turned out to be the headline generator we'd hoped for. In this week's show, which you can check out in the video below, Eurogamer news editor Tom Phillips, reporter Emma Kent and me deliver an Epic vs Apple emails special, digging into the detail behind this unprecedented peek behind the video game industry curtain.

The trial got off to a chaotic start as Fortnite fans flooded the public call-in number - which the authorities inexplicably failed to mute. The news flooded in soon after, with revelations around Sony's cross-play policy, Epic's Fortnite development and Microsoft's financials all emerging over the coming days. We even know how much Epic paid to secure Gearbox's Borderlands 3 as a six-month PC exlcusive to the Epic Games Store. Spoilers: it was a lot.

Resident Evil Village DLC Reveals a Fan Favourite Character Was Cut

2 years 11 months ago
This story contains information about a character that is not in Resident Evil Village. While not a spoiler, some may want to play the game without this knowledge. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Resident Evil Village’s Trauma Pack DLC, which comes packaged with the Collector’s, Deluxe, and Complete versions of the game, has some behind the scenes artwork that reveals a fan favourite character was originally planned to be part of Village but was ultimately cut. In ‘The Tragedy of Ethan Winters Artwork’, a artwork gallery that is provided as part of the Trauma Pack DLC, there is a set of artwork showing concept designs for Ada Wong. Rather than her classic red dress, Ada is wearing a gothic plague doctor-inspired outfit that looks closer to a Bloodborne hunter than anything in Resident Evil. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=resident-evil-village-ada-wong-concept-art&captions=true"] “Early plans had a mysterious masked person that saves Ethan,” explains the concept art’s caption. “This was going to be Ada Wong investigating the village, but this was cut due to a number of conflicting scenarios.” A further piece of art shows a storyboard that depicts the masked Ada bursting into a courtroom and rescuing player character Ethan Winters from his captors. “An early plot point was to have Ada, disguising herself with a mask, help Ethan escape from his trial,” explains the caption. With multiple villains operating underneath Village’s big bad, it’s understandable that Ada was considered a plot thread too much for an already beefy Resident Evil game. However, it’s hard not to feel a little sad considering the fantastic design for Ada’s new appearance.

Resident Evil Village: the best settings to improve your PC's performance

2 years 11 months ago

Resident Evil Village is finally here, continuing the story of Ethan Winters from Resident Evil 7 as he finds himself trapped in a bleak, wintry landscape full of tall vampire ladies, snarling wolf boys and more horrible nasties than you can shake an Umbrella-shaped stick at. It's also one of the best-looking PC games of the year by my reckoning, especially if you happen to own a ray tracing-capable graphics card. It runs supremely well, but it can start to chug a bit if you exceed your graphics card's memory limit. To help you get the best performance in Resident Evil Village, I've put together this best settings guide, telling you which settings to turn on (and which to dial back) to help keep those frame rates nice and high.

Have You Played… Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy?

2 years 11 months ago

Before revisiting the games I played as a youngster, I never really realised how much better a game can be when you’re co-operating with a teammate. Of course this goes for your team-based games like Warzones and Fortnites and Valheims, but in my experience, literally any game where I can get the homies involved improves the vibes tenfold.

What game do you wish would get the WoW: Classic treatment?

2 years 11 months ago

I like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but I loved the original Counter-Strike. While CSGO is the prettier, more polished version of the same set of ideas, so many of the maps, so much of the feel that I loved, isn't present in the latest iteration.

The original Counter-Strike is still available to play, but its final update, 1.6, isn't the version I want either. I want beta 5.2, or thereabouts, from back before Valve bought the game and its rougher edges got sanded away.

That's me. But I'm here to ask you: what live service game would you like to see relaunch and preserve an older version of itself, as World Of Warcraft: Classic has? And what version would you want?

While the Pokemon Journeys ended when the final batch of episodes were added to Netflix in March 2021, it isn’t really the end. The Pokemon Company International announced Pokemon Master Journeys will show up in Summer 2021. It will continue directly from where the 23rd season left off and continue to follow Ash and Goh. There were a few details about where Pokemon Master Journeys’ story could go. To be specific, Ash still wants to be a master. Chloe is still on her way to becoming a trainer. Euro Truck Simulator 2's photo mode is getting better

2 years 11 months ago

It's been a while since I've booted up Euro Truck Simulator 2 and gone for a relaxing drive myself, but it remains just so delightfully wholesome. These people, they love trucks.

After update 1.40 revamped the game's lighting system back in March, developers SCS Software have been working on a revamp of the game's photo mode. When 1.41 launches, you'll now be able to fiddle with the time of day and the weather, so you can capture your truck looking its best.

Humble Bundle reinstating charitable donation sliders following outcry over removal

2 years 11 months ago

Humble Bundle has reversed its controversial decision to remove charity sliders from its bundle pages - a move that would have significantly reduced the percentage of payments players were able to donate charity.

Humble Bundle has long permitted customers to choose how they want to split their bundle payments between a charity, a game's publisher, and Humble Bundle itself, even allowing them to donate 100% of their money to charity if they so choose - a split determined by shifting a number of sliders.

It's a system that's so far helped Humble Bundle raise a whopping $195m USD (around £140m) for charity over the decade it's been in operation. Last month, however, the company announced it would be doing away with bundle sliders (and admitted it had already quietly removed them for some users back in March as a "test"), replacing them with a toggle system offering a fixed payment split instead - a move the company said it was making to bring its bundle pages "more in line with how our other products support charity".

Hardspace: Shipbreaker's new update revamps its story and tutorial

2 years 11 months ago

Hardspace: Shipbreaker sits you in front of a moist gateau and hands you a cake slice, only the gateau is a stylish spaceship and the cake slice is a metal-severing laser. It's immediately compelling, as you cut into your rich dessert to extract its delicious insides without accidentally slicing a cherry. In this metaphor, the cherries are explosives.

After a while, I found its early access release got a little lonely and a little samey, but that might have changed with today's "Salvage Your Future" update. It revamps Shipbreaker's campaign and introduces four new voiced characters.

Opinion: Returnal Isn't Too Hard, It's Just Too Long

2 years 11 months ago

Last night I made it further than I've ever been able to progress in Returnal. With the help of an Astronaut Figure and some key health consumables, I was able to penetrate deep into the desert biome, fending off waves of difficult enemies in the process. I finally succumbed to the attacks of a teleporting alien, sending me all the way back to my ship while wiping away 90 minutes of progress.

As I watched the flaming wreck of the Helios dive through the atmosphere for the hundredth time to crash on the planet below, I took a deep sigh and put away my PS5 controller. At that moment I wondered if I would have the time and energy to finish Returnal. It's not that it's really hard, per se. I can deal with difficulty. Nor is it a bad game, as our positive review can attest. It’s more that, in my opinion, the expectations surrounding blockbuster games are an awkward fit for the traditionally lean, fast-paced roguelite genre. Or to put it more simply, I think runs in Returnal take too long to complete.

Returnal is being touted by some observers as one of the first ‘triple-A roguelites’ — a big budget version of the successful indie genre. It features many of the elements that have proven successful in Hades, Dead Cells and other games, particularly in the way that it makes dying over and over again into a storytelling conceit. Considering  how popular roguelites have been over the past several years, it was inevitable that some major developer would eventually tackle the genre that has so effectively popularized challenge runs and permadeath.

World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Classic arrives in June

2 years 11 months ago

World of Warcraft Classic, Blizzard's retro version of the long-running MMO, will be expanding to include the game's first expansion, The Burning Crusade, on 1st June at 11pm BST/6pm PT.

As you'd expect, The Burning Crusade's arrival will see World of Warcraft Classic receive all the features delivered in the original expansion, meaning the introduction of Blood Elves and the Draenei as playable races, flying mounts, an increased level cap of 70, arena PvP, and more.

WoW's map will also expand to include new starting zones - the Azuremyst Isles and Eversong Woods - and the Outland, a "fel-scarred planet where the forces of the demonic Burning Legion prepare to mount an assault against all life on Azeroth", accessible through the Dark Portal.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends — New Gameplay Today Live

2 years 11 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Last year, Sumo Digital took the...well digital stage during Sony's State of Play event to announce Hood: Outlaws & Legends, a new vision of the storied altruistic hero and his gang of well-meaning thieves. This time around though, things are a bit darker and have nary a cartoon fox insight.

Sumo Digital's latest title challenges players to slash, shoot, and sneak through a myriad of medieval maps to steal the riches of the castle and escape in one piece. While there's plenty of challenge to be found in evading and dicing up NPCs and a Mr. X-esque sheriff, the developers have added another wrinkle. Should you don the hood, you'll also have to face off against another team who is also after the same treasure. Think capture the flag, but with Prince John's retirement fund instead of the symbol of a nation. Stealing from the rich isn't the only way the developer tries to immerse you in its gritty world.

Hood takes the archetypes of the classic tale and spins them into four classes players can inhabit. Whether your preference is long-ranged combat, support, tank, or stealth, the four classes hit each bucket and attempt to make our heroes feel unique from their sticky-fingered companions.
