Yakuza Combat Will Be Turn-Based Going Forward

2 years 11 months ago

Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Following the reveal of Lost Judgment, an interview with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio director Toshihiro Nagoshi and producer Kazuki Hosokawa has surfaced on IGN. Lost Judgment brings Ryu Ga Gotoku back to its action-combat roots, leaving many fans to wonder if that meant the Yakuza series would also return to that style following last year's Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Speaking to IGN, Nagoshi and Hosokawa confirmed that the Judgment series will carry on the studio's action style of gameplay, while Yakuza will continue to evolve as a turn-based RPG. "The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG," they told IGN. "On the other hand, over the years, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy. We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgment."

Skullgirls 2nd Encore's next DLC fighter Umbrella has a ravenous sentient brolly

2 years 11 months ago

Developer Hidden Variable has unveiled the latest DLC character to join the roster of acclaimed fighters Skullgirls 2nd Encore and the free-to-play Skullgirls Mobile: the sou'westered, be-wellied Umbrella and her sentient brolly chum, Hungern.

Umbrella, the second DLC character to arrive as part of Skullgirls 2nd Encore's season pass (following on from March's Annie), is described as a small, slow character with limited movement that's able to take some "big swings" thanks Hungern.

Indeed, while the perpetually rain-ready Umbrella certainly looks the part, Hungern is the real star in the many ways. Most of Umbrella's abilities will involve the living brolly, but the exact moves available at any time are determined by Hungern's hunger level - meaning players must either influence his available moveset by feeding him, or adapt their playstyle are required.

Capcom Celebrates Resident Evil Village’s Launch By Drawing A Giant Hillside Lycan

2 years 11 months ago

Resident Evil Village begins terrifying fans today, and if you’re a UK resident living around the Somerset area, you may have noticed or heard of a giant lycan drawn into a nearby hillside that has puzzled residents for the past week. Nope, it’s not the work of any supernatural phenomena or mischievous prankers. Capcom took it upon themselves to promote Village’s arrival by creating a unique rendition of one of its deadliest enemies.

The lycan chalk installation measures 58m high and over 100m long. Capcom doesn’t provide an exact location, but it’s nestled somewhere among grassy hills between the villages of Somerset and Blackdown Hills. For those unaware, the English countryside has historically been littered with similar hillside art and this latest addition appeared a week ago before Capcom raised its hand to claim responsibility (I can only assume the game’s title was added last). According to the publisher, the massive beast took less than 24 hours to create. Best of all, it can even light up, creating quite the nighttime spectacle.

The Witcher 3's next-gen update may include the work of modders

2 years 11 months ago

CD Projekt Red announced last year that they'll be releasing a big next-gen (now-gen) update to The Witcher 3, which PC players will get as a free game update too. We still don't know when that'll be arriving just yet, but when it does it may include the work of modders. CDPR have confirmed that they're in talkes with mod creators whose work may wind up being used in the facy new release. I don't expect it'll include the ones that turn Geralt into Henry Cavill though.

Outriders

  • Delayed from February 2 to April 1, 2021

Developer People Can Fly announced the delay in early January, saying, “We have decided to move the release date of Outriders to April 1st 2021 (no joke!). We will spend this extra time fine tuning the game and focusing on delivering a fantastic play experience at launch.”

This is Outriders’ second delay; it was previously pushed from Holiday 2020 to February 2021.

Lost Judgment Coming This Fall From Yakuza Studio

2 years 11 months ago

Lost Judgment

Sega and Yakuza developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have announced a sequel to the 2018 Yakuza spin-off game Judgment. Lost Judgment continues the story of private detective Takayuki Yagami, the protagonist of the first game, as he takes on new cases in the action-packed legal thriller. The announcement comes shortly after the original Judgment arrived on new-gen consoles and Stadia after initially debuting exclusively on PlayStation 4. Unlike the original's trajectory, Lost Judgment will debut across both PlayStation and Xbox consoles in a simultaneous worldwide release this September.

Warpips adds some meta-tension to the usual tug-of-war game

2 years 11 months ago

There came a point in Warpips where I was going into battles that I knew I was underprepared for. This game is, at its most core level, about managing limited funds and capacity to field an army that can defeat your opponent's. And in its campaign mode, Warpips really lets you ride the line between success and failure.

If you haven't played a tug-of-war game before, it's not too dissimilar from the "autobattler" craze that took hold for a little while in 2019. Unlike games like Teamfight Tactics, you're working on a single "lane," and using your incremental influxes of cash to purchase units that will automatically run down the lane and fight the enemy.

Magic: The Gathering Goes Dungeons & Dragons In July

2 years 11 months ago

This July, Dungeons & Dragons is coming to Magic: The Gathering in force with the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set. While certainly these two massive properties have come together before, this is the first time an entire full-scale Magic: The Gathering set experience will take place within Forgotten Realms.

In other words, this is a super big deal that will have players tapping into tons of iconic Dungeons & Dragons fare when it hits everywhere on July 23. However, if you're like me, most of your time spent playing Magic: The Gathering these days takes place on MTG Arena, where you can start playing with Adventures in the Forgotten Realms on July 8! I don't know about you, but I'm going to celebrate with beholders and barbeque this summer...

As part of a ton of other Magic: The Gathering related items explored in a DailyMTG article, players got their first taste of exactly what D&D looks like with this set. There are basic lands with flavor text! Whoa! As cool as that is, they're still just lands. So let's look at a few cards, including an awesome new card frame treatment influenced by the D&D Monster Manuals of legend.

Titanfall 2 Speedrunning Champ Reclaims Their Record One Week After Losing It

2 years 11 months ago

A Titanfall 2 speedrunner has reclaimed their throne after having their previous record beaten last week. Cash Mayo managed to speedrun Titanfall 2’s tutorial level, an infamously intricate bit of wallrunning and speed-boosting, in 11.1 seconds, beating Whatevershoe’s record of 11.2 seconds.

Reported first by PC Gamer, Cash Mayo managed the new record this past weekend, narrowly beating Whatevershoe’s recent record. Whatevershoe was originally aiming to beat Cash Mayo’s previous record of 11.7 seconds from 2019, so the room for error has gotten exponentially smaller and smaller as the record was revised.

Acclaimed post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk is heading to mobile

2 years 11 months ago

Developer 11 Bit Studios' superb post-apocalyptic city builder Frostpunk is coming to iOS and Android devices "later this year".

Frostpunk initially launched on PC in 2018 before making its way to Xbox and PlayStation the following year. It's a fascinating, frequently gruelling, and wonderfully atmospheric experience, delivering a captivating blend of brutal survival sim, city builder, and rich narrative as players attempt to survive - through the slow expansion their settlement, and with plenty of tough moral choices to make - in a harsh, post-apocalyptic world.

It's a thoroughly engrossing combination that proved to be both a critical and commercial hit, with the game managing to shift a quarter of a million copies in less than 66 hours of release.

BenQ's Zowie XL2546K is a 240Hz monitor with an ultra premium price

2 years 11 months ago

240Hz gaming monitors remain some of the most expensive screens you can buy today, and the BenQ Zowie XL2546K is no exception. Costing a hefty £459 / $499, this 240Hz, 1080p esports-focused display is probably one of the costliest monitors I've tested in some time. It's a far cry from the £270 / $280 price of my current 240Hz pick in my best budget gaming monitor round-up, the AOC C27G2ZU, and in terms of overall image quality, the AOC still has the BenQ beat (more on that in a sec).

Yakuza series turn-based battles are here to stay, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio say

2 years 11 months ago

Yakuza series developers Ryu Ga Gotoku revealed a sequel to their spinoff series Judgement today. The announcement came and went without any mention of a PC release though, alas. It did produce an interesting detail about the future of the Yakuza series. After turning the traditionally beat 'em up brawler games on their head by switching to turn-based combat in Yakuza: Like A Dragon, RGG say that the series will continue in that style while the Judgement series carries the action game banner. Intriguing!

Epic vs Apple trial raises the question: what is a game?

2 years 11 months ago

The Epic Games vs Apple antitrust trial has been in full swing this week, bringing up all sorts of confidential info, and showing poor legal people just how confusing the games industry can be. Yesterday, during the fourth day of the trial, Apple found themselves getting caught up in a few contradictions when defining what a game actually is - and it's all because of Roblox.
