Baby Chris, Lady X and Dante lead the early days of Resident Evil Village modding

2 years 11 months ago

It's early days in the burgeoning demand for Resident Evil Village mods, but already the community has come up with some... interesting tweaks.

THERE MAY BE RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE SPOILERS AHEAD.

Mini Me Chris is one of the more eye-catching mods, simply because of how nightmarish it is. Modder JTeghius Kittius said: "This was a dumb joke that popped into my head so I had to do this."

"Unbannable" Apex Legends cheater faces potential legal action

2 years 11 months ago

Respawn recently reassured players that it was exploring "every avenue" to take down Apex Legends cheaters - legal action being one of them - and it seems one high-profile cheater is already facing something worse than the ban hammer. Prolific cheater Tufi, who some in the Apex Legends community have described as a "God" and "unbannable" cheater, is apparently facing some form of legal action from Respawn - although details remain light on exactly how far this has progressed.

Earlier this week Apex Legends streamer Tanner "Rogue" Trebb announced during a stream that Tufi was "in jail", later clarifying in a Reddit comment that the jail comment was a joke, but reaffirming that Tufi is facing legal action and "100 percent in the courts no basketball".

Dot Esports contacted Respawn and was told the developer was unable to discuss the matter, citing an inability to comment on legal action.

PSVR 2 Reportedly Includes 4K Lenses, Eye Tracking, and Haptic Feedback

2 years 11 months ago
PSVR 2 will reportedly include a 4K display, eye tracking, haptic feedback, and more according to a newly published report. UploadVR cites multiple "reliable sources" on the matter, who say that Sony has shared details with its partners about these PSVR 2 features. The report suggests that the new revision of the headset could feature a "4000x2040 pixels (2000x2040 per eye)" resolution, gaze tracking and a lens separation adjustment detail, a feature that can be seen on the Valve Index headset. The 4K resolution would be a big step up from the original PlayStation VR, which featured a 960x1080 pixels per eye – and a small step up on the popular Oculus Quest 2 headset's 1832x1920 per eye. Eye tracking within the headset will allow for foveated rendering, a technique that allows VR experiences to reduce the quality of rendering in players' peripheral vision – essentially allowing for developers to increase the quality of what players actually see. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/01/12/heres-our-wishlist-for-psvr-2-beyond-526-teaser"] Another feature mentioned in the report is haptic feedback, which the report suggests could be implemented via a motor in the headset (and would complement the headset's new controllers, which also feature haptic feedback). An onboard camera would track the position of the controllers, reducing the amount of peripherals needed to make the headset work.

It looks like Shadow Warrior 3 has a lot of eyeball-based weaponry

2 years 11 months ago

The pair of Shadow Warrior 3 trailers below are intense and ridiculous. Like modern Doom, but instead of Hell’s spawn spewing onto Mars they’ve accidentally invaded a ‘90s children’s quiz show set. There are eyeballs popping out of maws and gleefully killing everything, and each arena has vast killing devices that grinds enemies into a fine paste. If the gore was green slime instead of viscera it would probably be a big hit on Nickelodeon.

Twelve Minutes is easier to understand when you think of it as a theatrical play

2 years 11 months ago

Twelve Minutes begins to make a lot more sense to me when the director, Luis Antonio, talks about it being like a play. It's not that the central time-looping concept is hard to grasp, nor that it's confusing to play - it's absolutely neither of those things. But it's hard to see how such a contained set of ideas can fill eight to 10 hours of the game's duration. Particularly as, after 25 minutes, I've apparently seen 95 percent of all the objects and things I can interact with. But when he says, "We're going for kind of a character piece like a theatre play," I begin to understand.

There are few, if any, distractions. There's one small set - an apartment - three characters, a few props, and that's it. And there are no gamey exaggerations like flashy powers or combat systems, or anything like that. Instead, there's the characters, and a drama that comes through them, through the things they say and the things they do. Like in a play. Except it's a play that rewinds roughly every 12 minutes and then runs again, and when it does, someone makes a change and triggers a chain reaction in which new character discoveries can occur. And that's how the story emerges, in evolving loops of time.

Sega reminds fans that Sonic fan games are OK, but exceptions may occur

2 years 11 months ago

For years, folks have been making Sonic fan games without reprisal from Sega. It's an institution!

And in some cases, folks are even hired to make official Sonic games off the back of their work. It's a well known entity that Sega is more accepting of these types of projects than other publishers, and here in mid-2021, the company decided to remind people of the vague contract they have with creators.

Speaking on Twitter, social media rep MiniKitty explains: "So long as no profit is involved, there is usually* no issue with y'all using our blue boy to hone your art and dev skills." The "usually" bit is clarified to not serve as a catch-all, since for "legal reasons, [they] can't promise all content is OK." They follow up that fan game donations are a "grey area," clarifying: "If something Sonic-related is used as a vessel to make a profit (i.e. calling out the donations through the Sonic content), it's normally best to avoid if possible."

It's pretty standard stuff, but it's good to be aware of Sega's continued support for fan games. I mean, they kind of need it to keep the goodwill going at times when there's a good Sonic game drought.

The character is kind of in a holding period now, as there hasn't been a real successful game in a while, the films are doing their own thing, and the Sonic Boom TV series has been scrapped in favor of trying something new on Netflix. The fan community is doing a good job of bolstering Sonic's image while we wait for all this new stuff to arrive.

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector now out in July

2 years 11 months ago

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector comes out 15th July on PC, PlayStation and Xbox priced £30.99, publisher Slitherine has announced.

The PC version of the Blood Angels versus Tyranids turn-based strategy game was due out in May, with the console versions to follow in the summer. But Slitherine is now going for a joined-up launch across all platforms in July.

Battlesector is developed by Black Lab Games, maker of the well-received Battlestar Galactica Deadlock. It's described as "battle-scale", and based on gameplay it's a scale bigger than leading turn-based strategy game XCOM, but smaller than the likes of Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon.

Epic v Apple trial debates appropriateness of Fortnite's naked banana man Peely

2 years 11 months ago

It was inevitable: the appropriateness of Fortnite's bizarre banana man Peely has now been discussed in open court.

Last night, in the ongoing Apple v Epic trial, Peely came under scrutiny for being a naked piece of fruit with arms and legs.

In remarks transcribed from the courtroom by Verge reporter Adi Robertson, a lawyer for Apple brought up Peely in court and made a deal of showing the character wearing clothes (his Chapter 2 Season 2 Bond-esque Agent Peely tuxedo).

Preview: HighFleet is a massive, smoke-belching slab of air combat which somehow keeps itself in the sky

2 years 11 months ago

There are some game traits which you will know, if you have read a moderate number of my posts, are surefire Nate-bait. Settings which go big on the stark, WW1-evoking side of the “dieselpunk” identifier? Yes please. Bafflingly utilitarian, diegetic UIs covered in clunkers and switcheroos? Like and subscribe. Baroque, crypto-feudal science fiction cultures, where archaic royal houses persist in the middle of mechanised warfare on a chilling scale? Here’s my credit card number.

HighFleet - which is slated to come out in Q2, so sometime in the next few months - plots a course straight through this maelstrom of tropes, and comes out in a blaze of glory. And, admittedly, in a blaze of fire. But in a good way. Mostly.

Yippee Ki Yay: Looks like Die Hard's John McClane is headed to Call of Duty: Warzone

2 years 11 months ago

Just yesterday, we got word that '80s action star John Rambo was readying his bow for war in the battle royale world of Call of Duty: Warzone. And it seems that old Sly won't be coming alone, as Activision has also been dropping hints that kamikaze cop John McClane — protagonist of the Die Hard series — will also be skydiving into Verdansk real soon.

A tweet on the official Call of Duty Twitter features a faux-advert for a company called "Nakatomi Duct Cleaning". As film fans will realize, Nakatomi Plaza is the opulent skyscraper held to siege in John McTiernan's excellent 1988 action flick, with the building's duct system used by put-upon NYPD officer McClane — caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

While there has been no official reveal or date for McClane's arrival, yesterday's teaser implied that John Rambo will be arriving on May 20. It seems unlikely that all of these Hollywood stars will drop on the same day — hell, it takes a month to save up for each of the highly priced prestige skins — but we'll be sure to give you a heads-up when we hear that John is ready to join the party... pal.

This new Panchamp Pokemon short is considerably less wacky than the original Poketoon

2 years 11 months ago

In 2020 The Pokemon Company debuted its first "Poketoon," which managed to draw inspiration from classic cartoons of the Chuck Jones and Fleischer eras. It was a hit, and as expected, it takes time to prep more. Well, here we are!

This Poketoon however is a stark contrast to the aforementioned goofy short, and is done in a more traditional reflective, slice of life anime style. That's not to say it's not as good, per se! It might not turn as many heads (especially since it's more limited with Japanese-only audio at this time, rather than the unspoken universal antics of its predecessor), but it's still a fun little watch.

This one takes us on a journey with a small boy and a dedicated Panchamp, who trains every day in an effort to become something more. Even if you don't understand Japanese, the message is fairly universal.

Whatever the delivery system might be, more Poketoons is a good thing. I love how these branching multimedia opportunities allow for different creatives to put their spin on it, without having to bow to the anime series.

The Crucial MX500 has been our top SATA SSD recommendation for a little while now, so when I saw the 1TB model had been discounted to £67.64 on Amazon UK I had to tell you about it. You see, the MX500 is often the best value SSD available, and so far this year it's sat around the £90 mark - so today's ~25 percent discount on top of that is pretty outstanding.

The Game Boy Printer lives on in the instax mini Link Special Edition

2 years 11 months ago

I never asked my parents for a Game Boy Printer for Christmas, because I knew, like a skateboard or a Digivice, it fell into the land of items I wasn't allowed to have. Looking back, this is probably because I knew they knew I'd get bored of it far too quickly. Still, I desperately wanted a picture of the backbone of my Pokémon Yellow team, my main shrew, Fred the Sandslash. The original Fred, sadly, would never be immortalised in a black-and-white photograph, but the Game Boy Printer has been reborn as the instax mini Link Special Edition.

Through the use of the dedicated Instax for Nintendo Switch app and the console's ability to connect to smart devices, this printer allows you to turn your favourite screenshots into small photographs. Uploading your chosen screenshots is a quick process and the app remembers any past photos you've printed, which streamlines reprinting. The app also contains a number of editing features - zoom, adding text, changing the brightness or adding a filter - which, while basic, are easy to use, especially for beginners. Best of all, and most importantly, the quality of the printed screenshots is great, with each one retaining all the colour and vitality of the original version. It means I'm now the happy owner of a picture I took of an Alolan Sandslash - I call him Ice Fred - I took in New Pokémon Snap.

Resident Evil Village Has Shipped Over 3 Million Units Globally

2 years 11 months ago
Since its launch on May 7, Resident Evil Village has shipped over 3 million units globally. Capcom announced the news in a press release, revealing that this newest entry available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC is off to a strong start. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/07/13-things-you-need-to-know-before-starting-re-village"] Since 1996, cumulative shipments of Resident Evil games have exceeded 100 million and Village builds upon the success of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, which itself has shipped 8.5 million units as of December 31, 2020. This news also follows Capcom's announcement that it has hit record-high profits for the fourth consecutive year, in big part due to the releases of both Monster Hunter Rise and the remake of Resident Evil 3. In our Resident Evil Village review, we said that playing it "is like visiting a disturbing and deadly Disneyland, where every attraction is a house of horrors.

Resident Evil Village has already hit 3 million shipments and digital sales

2 years 11 months ago

Capcom has finally revealed the launch numbers for its newest survival horror sequel, Resident Evil Village. Available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms, Ethan Winters' journey into a sepia-tinged nightmare has amassed over three million global shipments and digital sales in the few days following its May 7 launch.

This highly impressive number sees Resident Evil Village surpass the launch of 2017's Resident Evil VII and is more or less equal to the incredible launch numbers attained by 2019 remake Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil Village also made its debut at the number one spot of the UK charts. In addition, the success of Village pushes sales for the entire Resident Evil franchise beyond the 100 million mark. That's a helluva lot of scares.

Frankenstein's Army Director Claims Resident Evil Village Monsters Are Based Off His Designs

2 years 11 months ago

Resident Evil Village has a ton of new monsters for Mr. Ethan Winters to face, but not all of them are totally original designs. At least according to Frankenstein's Army director Richard Raaphorst.

Raaphorst took to LinkedIn and Twitter to draw similarities between his designs and those of some of the creatures in Resident Evil Village. The similarities are so striking, that even his fans began taking to social media in order to point out the seemingly carbon-copied takes on those that go bump in the night. For direct side-by-side shots, Twitter user @CloneKorp broke it down in the simplest way, showing side-by-side shots of Village monsters next to their Frankenstein's Army counterparts:
