Xbox May update adds more improvements to Quick Resume

A new update is going out to Xbox Series X and S users today that's adding some quality-of-life upgrades to various aspects of the consoles, including the Quick Resume feature.

Jonathan Hildebrant, Director of Program Management at Xbox Experiences, broke down the new update in an Xbox blog post. A big part of it is improvements to Quick Resume, which will have faster load times and improved reliability, as well as tags for Quick Resume-capable games and a group that can aggregate all your Quick Resume-saved games into one area.

The Xbox team is also adding passthrough audio for certain media apps, for those who use external sound systems, and a new dynamic background.

Quick Resume has been a big feature for Xbox, allowing users to flip between games quickly rather than close one app and open another. It sounds like it's been a real hit for those who went with Xbox this generation, and it's nice to see them continue to build it up.

EA Play Live Dates Revealed For After E3 2021 In July

Electronic Arts separated from E3 years ago, and it continues to do so for the foreseeable future. Hosting its own event with EA Play, the dates for this year have been revealed, setting it one month after E3 2021. For those interested, EA Play Live 2021 will be a virtual event on July 22.

While we don't have any specifics about what EA Play Live has to offer this year, with so many leaks and rumors swirling around Battlefield 6 in recent weeks, we expect our first look at that title. More on FIFA could also be anticipated and possibly a glimpse at the rumored new Star Wars games.

We may get a cinematic reveal for Battlefield 6 sometime this month or around E3 in June, with a full gameplay reveal in July for EA Play Live. It was teased that Battlefield 6 would be shown off "soon," so we're hoping for that staggered announcement schedule because we don't want to wait until the end of July for our first look.

Xbox Is Making Quick Resume Even Quicker

Microsoft's May Xbox update is set to make Quick Resume even quicker, as well as introduce several new features including audio passthrough and extra family controls. The full update notes can be found over on the Xbox Newswire, where it's explained that Quick Resume will benefit from "improved reliability and faster load times" with this latest patch. Quick Resume on Xbox Series X and S lets users suspend a set of their favorite games so that they can hop into them whenever they please. This update will make that process faster, as well as making it easier to identify which games are Quick Resume compatible with new groups and tags. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/16/xbox-series-x-quick-resume-tech-demo"] Beyond the Quick Resume buffs, audio nerds will be pleased to hear that an Allow Passthrough option is set to be added to the Xbox audio setting screen. This will let you bypass the console audio decoding in apps like Disney+, Plex, and Apple TV to improve sound quality on your external sound system. Many smaller features are also on the way including the ability to watch game trailers for Xbox Game Pass games within the library, and a new dynamic background. Parents will also be able to approve multiplayer games directly from their phone with the Xbox Family Settings app when a child boots a game on their console. Elsewhere in the Xbox ecosystem, performance improvements and push notifications are coming to the Xbox app for iOS and Android, while the Smart Glass app for PC will be removed from the Windows Store in June.

In the world of game mods, bimbos reign supreme

For the past few years, aided by the glamorous memory of Paris Hilton’s miniskirts and a reassessment of sex work by internet people who realized that money is cool, the word “bimbo” has flipped from meaning “brainless Barbie” to “savvy, powerful hot girl.” But for some makers and users of game mods, this positive spin on the bimbo isn’t exactly news.

Popular mod destinations like LoversLab and Tumblr have offered a decent selection for at least a decade, tucked away but not entirely hidden, like good cherries swinging from the top of a tree. Want to be a dirty homewrecker in the Sims? Check out SkillfulSimmer340’s “Homewrecker Aspiration Pack” that requires you to have several partners, find out one of them is married, and buy an expensive object in order to receive the Master Homewrecker trait. Wish you could rule Final Fantasy XIV as a bikini-wearing himbo? Who doesn’t! Just download Sko514’s “Thicclander” mod and let your tiny shirt, big abs dreams come true.

That's a month later than 2021's digital-only E3 event, which is dated for 12th to 15th June.

EA has not been a major part of E3 for years, instead opting to hold its own EA Play events elsewhere. E3 is traditionally held at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, while in recent years EA has housed its own show at the same time a few miles away up in Hollywood.

The Room 4: Old Sins' dollhouse looks lovely as a Lego set

Every game in The Room series is about the slow unlocking of a layered puzzle. They’re detailed, marvellous things, and you can often forget just how cool they are while you’re looking for a lever or begging your partner to Google for a solution (that way you didn’t look for one, you see?). To remind you, or to spoil it for you, The Room 4: Old Sins’ graphics and motion designer Roger Schembri has designed that game’s dollhouse in Lego Ideas, rendering what it would look like if Lego ever made it into a kit.

The Biggest Game on Roblox Just Opened Its Own Development Studio

The developers behind record-breaking Roblox game Adopt Me have launched an entire new studio to support it, called Uplift Games. A press release from Uplift Games reveals that whilst the studio was “originally founded by two talented Roblox developers, the team has now expanded to a 40-strong game studio, including a mix of experienced Roblox creators and veteran developers". Roblox is a hugely popular online platform, which allows players to create their own games for others in the community. Its success has been enormous, particularly with young players and, after going public in March, it was revealed that Roblox is now worth more than development giants Take-Two and Ubisoft combined. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/14/a-roblox-player-poses-as-a-journalist-fools-white-house-officials"] Adopt Me originally launched on Roblox in 2017, and has gone on to become “the fastest growing and most successful Roblox title of all time”. Adopt Me is a game created within Roblox, where players can “build houses, collect and trade over 150 cute pets, and use in-game tools to create their own fun with friends”. The game has seen over 22 billion visits to date, and set a new world record for concurrent players on Roblox, hitting 1.92 million concurrent users in April 2021.

Blizzard is showcasing new Overwatch 2 gameplay later this month

We've seen some of Overwatch 2's PvE in previous streams, but later this month, Blizzard will be turning the focus onto the competitive side. There will be a PvP livestream held on May 20 to detail some of the changes coming to Overwatch's multiplayer with the sequel.

In the first developer update hosted by new game director Aaron Keller, he says he'll be joined by other members of the Overwatch 2 development team to play through the new maps and talk through some of the philosophy behind changes coming to Overwatch 2's PvP.

Keller stepped in as game director following the departure of longtime director Jeff Kaplan. Revealed back in 2019, Overwatch 2 has been in development since, surfacing for the occasional BlizzCon stream. It was confirmed to not be a 2021 game, but after getting looks at the PvE prior, next week's stream will likely be big for those who are still playing competitive Overwatch today.

New World: Hands-On With 1 of the Expeditions

One of the best parts of any great MMORPG is its dungeons, and it sounds like Amazon Game Studios’ New World is bringing those in droves when it releases this August, launching with six whole dungeons - called expeditions - that range from mid-level to endgame content. The very first one you’ll get to visit is Amrine Excavation, which is immediately easy to pick up and fight through with a team, minus a highly challenging boss sequence towards the end that can sneak up on you if you’re not prepared for it. But it’s pretty unremarkable if you aren’t already engaged with New World’s overarching storyline, which, if you’re not all caught up, takes place in the high fantasy world of Aeternum. This world is host to an ongoing war between players and The Corruption, a malevolent force that seeks to, well, corrupt everything in its path. The Corruption is especially dangerous when in contact with the mystical substance called Azoth, a substance that is simultaneously vital to the world’s inhabitants, highly vulnerable to The Corruption’s influence, and so prevalent throughout Aeturnum that it is central to the conflict that drives the story as well as the PvP battles. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-world-may-2021-screenshots&captions=true"] Absolutely none of that is necessary to know if you only want to delve into a dungeon and kill some monsters for loot, which is exactly what I did. This first expedition unlocks when you’re level 25. And because of that low level gate, things are kept pretty simple as you work your way through a linear corridor with your party, fighting monsters and collecting loot as you go, then eventually spreading out and fighting tougher monsters for even better loot. The dungeon itself looks pretty run-of-the-mill, featuring mostly standard grays and browns without much else to flavor it.

EA Play Live will return in July

This year's EA Play Live event will not only be dodging E3, but doing it by a whole month. Electronic Arts announced today that EA Play Live is coming back on July 22, 2021.

Last year, EA hosted a brief Play event, with new Dragon Age looks and the reveal that a new Skate in the works. It also took place in June, right around the time that E3 would've normally been happening.

This year looks to be a bit different though. Along with E3 2021 moving ahead with a digital event, there was also a recent tease that the next Battlefield will have something to share in June. Couple that with Respawn's constant growth, BioWare working on both a new Dragon Age and the next Mass Effect, plus Skate, and this could be a larger show—and maybe why the event is putting some distance between itself and June.

We'll see what EA has in store on July 22.
