Dev turns The Room 4: Old Sins' creepy old dollhouse into a gorgeous Lego build

2 years 11 months ago

Lego is (as a year in lockdown with a whole lot to time to assemble plastic bricks has taught me) cool, and developer Fireproof Games' gorgeously atmospheric The Room puzzle series is, among many other good things, cool too. So it should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that combining the two results in a very cool thing indeed.

The architect of this particular very cool thing is Fireproof Games' own graphic and motion designer Roger Schembri who, under the name Lego CustardKid, has previously submitted a number of creations to the endlessly impressive Lego Ideas website, including an elaborate ornamental safe inspired by the original The Room.

The Room 4: Old Sins' Dollhouse (as spotted by Kotaku) is Schembri's most ambitious Lego Ideas build yet, lovingly recreating the game's deliciously sinister enchanted dollhouse - itself a detailed recreation of The Room 4's Waldegrave Manor - in impressively miniaturised detail.

VVVVVV Creator's Next Game Is Entirely Made in Roblox

2 years 11 months ago
The creator of VVVVVV, Terry Cavanagh, has just released his next game -- but unlike VVVVVV, you won't find it on typical storefronts. Instead, in order to play Climb the Giant Man Obby, you'll need to venture into Roblox. In a blog post, Cavanagh announced the "obby," which is Roblox shorthand for "obstacle course" (or just a platformer) and a popular genre to make among first-time creators on Roblox. "For the past year or so, I’ve been kinda fascinated by Roblox – a massively popular multiplayer game platform, mostly aimed at kids," Cavanagh writes. "So recently, I decided to try making a game for it!" [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/24/roblox-freeze-tag-trailer"] "I didn’t expect how much I was going to love working in Roblox Studio," Cavanagh added. "I’ve been working on this on-and-off for about three months, which makes it one of my biggest freeware projects ever." Cavanagh detailed his development journey with Roblox in a lengthy Twitter thread that goes back to the end of March. The thread offers glimpses of his process of adapting to Roblox's creation tools as Cavanagh first attempted to recreate the outfit worn by the fellow in the "How do you do, fellow kids?" meme, then turned his player character wearing that outfit into a giant man to then build a climbable obstacle course around. The ensuring obby has, per Cavanagh, about 30 or so "stages" which include obstacles like giant rotating fidget spinners, extremely narrow platforms, and ziplines.

Resident Evil Village mods are extremely unsettling already

2 years 11 months ago

Resident Evil Village modders have been working frighteningly fast. Not long after the game's free demo was available on PC, they'd already put Thomas The Tank Engine's head on very tall Lady Dimitrescu and also turned enemies into Barney. Those are funny, don't get me wrong, but they're part of the expected suite of PC mods these days. Someone always adds Thomas, right? Resident Evil Village has properly launched now, and things are getting weirder very quickly, as proven by Ethan and Mia Winters' terrible baby Chris Redfield.

A New Halo Infinite Trailer Is Being Teased

2 years 11 months ago

It looks like a new Halo Infinite trailer is dropping very soon for those itching to see more Craig the Brute. Halo Infinite's Joseph Staten took to Twitter to share an update for his week, and it very much looks like he's teasing a new trailer for the ongoing Master Chief tale.

343 Industries recently stated that it would have more to share on Halo Infinite "soon," and it looks like "soon" could very well be this month. Even more so with Staten's follow-up tweet, which you can see below:

The "117" is obviously a reference to John 117, also known as Master Chief. Sneaky, sneaky Staten!

Nine Inch Nails And Animal Crossing: New Horizons Collide With 'Nine Inch Nooks'

2 years 11 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the most wholesome games out on the market. Nine Inch Nails is definitely not one of the most wholesome bands, but that doesn't stop me from simping Trent Reznor and his delectable dark tunes. So when I saw a mashup of the two worlds with a Nine Inch Nooks Closer cover, it was just too weird not to share.

The cover was made by Jenn Welch and is a shot-by-shot remake of Nine Inch Nail's Closer song. If you're a fan like I am of Reznor's music, then you know what the lyrics to this are, so uh, it makes sense then that Welch would use a version of the song without lyrics, instead using vocal sounds from the game when bringing it into the realm of Animal Crossing:

I'm not going to lie, it's pretty perfect, especially when you compare it to the original music video for Closer. Is this the crossover I was expecting to see? Not even remotely, but I can tell you that I'm not even close to being mad at it.

Gears 5 developers won't be announcing new games "for some time"

2 years 11 months ago

Gears 5 has been out for nearly a couple years now, but don't start thinking about Gears 6, or Gears anything, for a while. The Coalition still have plans to bring more maps and characters to Gears 5 in two more Operations, they say, but the studio is also focusing on transitioning to the newest Unreal Engine. That's going to take most of their attention, so we shouldn't be expecting to hear about new Gears games for a while, they've warned.

Review: R-Type Final 2 Offers Impressive Variety in Shmup Combat

2 years 11 months ago

R-Type Final 2 offers tight, tense battles against organic and mechanical Bydo monstrosities. It continually puts the player in challenging situations no matter what difficulty level they’ve chosen. Plus, when you have to respawn back at a checkpoint instead of instantaneously, it makes every narrow escape and dangerously-close victory feel utterly satisfying. I just wish it looked a little nicer. The Bydo continue to infest and evolve, filling planets with all kinds of sickening, twisted alien life as well as with combat-ready machines. Through this, R-Type Final 2 continually offers stages that feel varied and fresh, filled with all manner […]

Nier: Automata HD Texture Pack Mod Completed After Four Years Of Development

2 years 11 months ago

Nier: Automata has a loyal PC playerbase despite the action-RPG’s brief Steam review-bomb period that happened at the end of March earlier this year. Steam users were upset that visual upgrades were still absent from the game many years after its release. Square Enix and PlatinumGames acknowledged these issues and announced a newfound effort to bring the much-needed enhancements to Steam at some undisclosed point in the future. Good thing the modding community is so generous because an amazing Nier: Automata HD Texture Pack got its final major update over the weekend after four years of development.

GPUnity, the mind behind the HD Texture Pack, posted the simple, but important, reason for why they worked tirelessly on the mod: “NieR: Automata is one of my favourite games. Unfortunately, it suffers from some blurry textures that hurt the presentation. My goal is to provide a natural restoration to the low-res textures, maintaining the intended look.”

Battlefield 6 Is Teasing a Potential June Reveal

2 years 11 months ago
The next Battlefield game could potentially be revealed in June according to a cheeky tweet from the game's official Twitter account. A new Battlefield game is finally coming later this year after the series took a brief hiatus from annual releases. While Battlefield games are typically released in the fall, a reveal next month could be in the cards. "Words that rhyme with Soon: June Boom," the Battlefield Twitter account posted. A likely indication that whatever the folks at EA DICE are working on, we could see it next month.

Gears Of War Studio Moving To Unreal Engine 5

2 years 11 months ago

Gears of War studio The Coalition has announced it is moving its future projects to Unreal Engine 5. The announcement comes following the release of Gears 5: Hivebusters, a rare mainline campaign expansion in the Gears of War universe. The Gears of War series has always used Unreal Engine (the series was originally developed by Unreal creators Epic Games after all), but with Unreal Engine 5, The Coalition feels it can bring things to the next level.

"As we look to future games, we're excited to start shifting our resources to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5," the blog post announcing the engine migration states. "Gears of War has always been at the front of Unreal Engine development – as a breakout 720p title for Xbox 360 through last year's 120FPS multiplayer update for Xbox Series X/S – and we're excited to continue that tradition by developing on UE5 for multiple new projects in the coming years."

The move to Unreal Engine 5 means major improvements for The Coalition's future titles, but it also brings with it a lull in the new titles coming out of the studio. "Shifting to a new engine is a big undertaking, so we want to be clear that we will not be announcing any new projects or titles for some time," the blog post states.

Dontnod CEO Says Life is Strange Is 'Not Our Strategy' For Now

Though Dontnod's seen success with games like Tell Me Why and Vampyr, it's still primarily associated with Life Is Strange. In addition to pioneering the series with the original Life Is Strange (which was widely praised by critics and sold over three million copies) Dontnod is also responsible for Life Is Strange 2 and The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. But according to CEO Oskar Guilbert, Dontnod is now ready to move on. "Never say never," Guilbert said. "But for the moment it's not our strategy, yeah. We want to create our own IPs. That's what we want to do." Despite its association with Life Is Strange, Dontnod doesn't own the intellectual property. Square Enix does. And Square Enix recently announced that Life is Strange: True Colors will be developed by Deck Nine, which also worked on Life Is Strange: Before the Storm. That on its own doesn't prevent Dontnod from ever returning to Life Is Strange, but, at least for now, more Life Is Strange isn't in the studio's plans. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/03/life-is-strange-2-the-complete-season-trailer"] Head of publishing Xavier Spinat added immediately after, "But we are looking at what's happening, of course. Because our fans are looking at it, and so we are looking at it." Guilbert elaborated further on the importance of Dontnod owning its own games, tying it into other topics we addressed during the interview like the studio's long-term stability. He also talked about Dontnod’s determination to remain independent and not have its portfolio influenced by outside editorial decisions. "We think that this is something really important for the company, for the ownership of the teams, and for the future of Dontnod," he said.

Dontnod 'Refused Several Proposals' of Acquisition to Maintain Independence

At a time when it seems like every independent studio that grows to a certain size and has a hit game or two is getting acquired by a giant entity, Dontnod is growing while fiercely proclaiming its ongoing independence. Speaking to IGN, Dontnod CEO Oskar Guilbert says that Dontnod had actually turned down a number of companies who wanted to acquire it in recent years. "To be honest, we refused several proposals," he says. "There are a lot of people who are interested [in] the game industry and see the game industry as a new El Dorado for investing. "...We raised 40 million euros in January. But for us, it was really important that the historic shareholders still have the majority, and still can keep the company independent. That's something really important for us." Why is Dontnod so adamant that it stay independent? For Guilbert, it comes down to the identity that Dontnod has built up over the years. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/27/tell-me-why-review"] "The values, the kind of games we want to do — it's really important for us that we keep this identity of the company for the future. [...] I don't want to be pretentious, but we're one of the game companies which do these kinds of games — like Life is Strange, like Tell Me Why, and Vampyr also in a sense. We really want to continue doing this. And we are lucky because our current partners, our people who put a lot of money in our company still let us do what we want to do. "...Intuitively I think people know what it means, a game made by Dontnod.

EA teases something soon in June for Battlefield

It looks like we might be getting a look at the new Battlefield, uh, "soon." Today the Battlefield Twitter account put out a tease involving "soon" and "June."

"Words that rhyme with 'Soon,'" the tweet reads. "June. Boom." A clever way of saying hey, look forward to June. And also, boom?

EA confirmed recently that two Battlefield games are in development, one being the next Battlefield game for console and PC, and another standalone mobile game. In it, the company said that a reveal for the new Battlefield is coming "soon."

While EA usually skips out on E3, a June announcement still fits right into place. We're still waiting to hear what the plans are for this year, but it's probably safe to say Battlefield will be a component of whatever news EA might roll out in June. In other news, I can't stop thinking of words that rhyme with "soon."
