Releasing Halo Infinite on Steam Looks Like a Very Good Decision

2 years 6 months ago

Halo Infinite's multiplayer was released early yesterday and Xbox Game Studios' decision to launch it on Steam alongside the Xbox PC App seems to have worked out very well already.

As per SteamDB, the game has seen a huge influx of players within the first day since its release. Across the period, Halo Infinite's peak number of concurrent players eclipsed the quarter of a million mark at 272,856 - instantly ranking it at 22nd in the platform's all-time peak player count rankings.

This places the game above the likes of Payday 2 and Rust, and just below Skyrim and Destiny 2. Given the game reached this peak on a Monday, it's entirely possible it will climb those charts this week.

Although statistics surrounding the Steam version of Halo Infinite are impressive enough on their own, the game's release on the platform was made all the more significant as a number of other platforms running the game experienced launch issues in the hour after announcement.

Many of the players attempting to access the game on the Xbox PC App yesterday experienced problems where the game wouldn't appear to launch properly. This seemed to be down to an issue with an update not appearing for download. While the Xbox PC App had a preinstall size of 200MB, the Steam version instead had a file size of around 26GB and was allowing players to run the game as intended.

Naruto And Friends Ninja Run Into Fortnite Today

2 years 6 months ago

Naruto Shippuden cosmetics are arriving in Fortnite right now, and they look awesome. Believe it!

The new collaboration between Epic's Fortnite and the latter half of the Naruto saga, Shippuden is bringing plenty of goodies from the Hidden Leaf Village. Not only is Naruto now playable in the battle royale, but he's brought along the rest of Team 7: Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, and their badass teacher Kakashi Hatake. Sakura and Naruto each come with alternate costumes based on their adult Boruto selves, while Kakashi fans can use his Anbu Black Ops outfit.

This great ninja takeover doesn't stop at just skins. First, the battlebus will see a Naruto-themed makeover. New items are being added like a pickaxe modeled after Sasuke's Sword of Kusanagi, and a new Paper Shuriken Bomb weapon. Maybe the coolest addition is a new glider based on Naruto's nine-tailed beast Karuma.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer: 343 Clarifies Why This Is a Beta, Extends Season 1 Battle Pass

2 years 6 months ago

Halo Infinite's head of creative, Joseph Staten has clarified why the early release of the game's multiplayer mode is being treated as a beta until the full game's official release date on December 8. 343 has also extended the multiplayer mode's first season Battle Pass until May 2, 2022.

On the Halo Waypoint blog Staten explained that the surprise launch of the game was being treated as a beta – meaning you could potentially run into bugs, see changes, and more – because the team expects an even larger influx of players next month and wants to be able to prepare.

"Our previous Multiplayer Technical Previews went a long way to battle-testing our services and infrastructure," wrote Staten. "But as we prepare for a significant increase in the number of players jumping into Halo Infinite on launch day, December 8th, we want to ensure all our systems are good-to-go. While you may experience some bumps and bugs during this beta period, it does mark the official start of Halo Infinite Season 1, with all day-one maps and modes enabled as well as the full Season 1 Battle Pass."

While those past Technical Previews didn't allow participants to keep their progression, Staten made clear that that was not the case for the beta: "All the Battle Pass and customization items you earn or purchase during the beta will stay with you after December 8th."

Dead By Daylight Streamers are Getting DDoS Attacked; Behaviour Interactive Currently Investigating

2 years 6 months ago

Over the past week or so, several Dead By Daylight streamers have taken to Twitter to report that they’ve been getting DDoS attacked. Some cases have gotten so serious to the point where streamers have been SWAT-ed, causing the authorities to show up at their place to conduct a search and march them out of their own houses.

However, while this has been going on for the past few days, developer Behaviour Interactive has only now responded to these cases on Twitter to state that they’re currently conducting an internal investigation and checking trends for them. You can check out the tweet for yourself down below:

Considering that it’s taken so long for the devs to respond, some streamers are understandable unhappy about the situation. For now, those who are actively playing and streaming the game online are advised to use a VPN to protect themselves from potential DDoS attacks while Behaviour looks into the issue.

World’s End Club Is Making its Way to Steam this Month

2 years 6 months ago

World’s End Club is an exciting collaboration project between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka. By all accounts, it should’ve been a smash hit as it was primed to be yet another exciting visual novel with the death game premise from the two biggest death game experts in the games industry. It had its highs, but was ultimately held back by questionable design decisions.

Still, the game’s been released on mobile platforms and the Switch, and it’ll be releasing on PC via Steam at the end of the month as well.

The Steam page is now live, and the game is set to be released on Nov. 30. World’s End Club tells the story of a bunch of “oddball” kids from Japan who one day find themselves in a theme park under the sea. They’re then forced to play a game to try to escape with their lives.

World’s End Club is now available on the Nintendo Switch, and will be out on Steam on Nov. 30.

Shin Megami Tensei 5's hardcore brand of Pokémon-esque action is a delight

2 years 6 months ago

If you're of a certain vintage and inclination - and sorry to make assumptions, but given you're currently reading Eurogamer I reckon it's likely you are - you'll be familiar with an infamous review of Doom way back in 1994 that ended up asking what if you could talk to the monsters. It's an idle thought that's since passed into legend, oft-mocked and even held up as some vague prophecy, but I've only just realised it's not really that strange a notion. Maybe the mysterious reviewer behind this particular Edge legend was just really into Shin Megami Tensei, the long-running RPG series in which, yes, you absolutely can talk to the monsters.

There's a slim chance that's the case, seeing as this is a series whose genesis can be traced back to 1987, and one that stands as a grandee of the RPG genre alongside the likes of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy - even if it's never quite had the global appeal of either. Partly that's thanks to the sporadic nature of mainline releases - Shin Megami Tensei 5, which is out on Switch this week, comes some eight years after the fourth installment, which itself has a clean ten-year gap to 2003's Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne. Partly it's because Shin Megami Tensei's various spin-offs have overtaken the mainline series in terms of popularity - the Persona games easily eclipse the series from which they span off in terms of profile, which has in turn set some awkward expectations for newcomers to a core Shin Megami Tensei title.

Off-topic: Every week, my drawing course blows my mind a little bit

2 years 6 months ago

I'm doing a drawing course at the moment, on Monday evenings - I don't know why you need to know that - and I'm really enjoying it. It's fascinating how much about art I don't know. Every week, I learn something that blows my mind a little bit.

We had this wonderful lesson on contour drawing, for example - I think that's what you call it. It's where you look at someone, or something, and you try and replicate it without taking your pencil off of the paper.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Overview Trailer Highlights Main Gameplay Features

2 years 6 months ago

A five-minute long overview trailer for Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which release later this week, was unveiled today on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel. The overview trailer highlights some of the main gameplay features that you can expect in these remakes.

The trailer starts off with showing how the beginning of the game will go: you travel to a lake near your town with your childhood friend, where you’ll pick out your very own starter Pokemon. After choosing between Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup, Professor Rowan will recruit you to complete the Pokedex of the Sinnoh region.

We see the diversity of the Sinnoh region and its mountain ranges, grassy fields, lakes, and snowy trails. We also get a glimpse of many of the Pokemon we’ll encounter on the journey, such as Bidoof and Drifloon, as well as a few shots of our Pokemon running behind us in the overworld.

The overview trailer goes on to explain that some trainers may team up with you throughout your journey, and that it’s your goal to challenge each town’s gym leader to receive badges and become the strongest trainer in Sinnoh.

The Grand Underground is explained in depth. It’s a vast world beneath the Sinnoh region where you can dig for fossils and Pokemon statues. You’ll be able to build a secret base with these items. There will also be Pokemon hideaways, which are a brand new feature not present in the original releases, where you can find rare Pokemon that can’t be caught anywhere else in the game.

New World’s Economy Gets Halted Yet Again as Yet Another Dupe Exploit Surfaces

2 years 6 months ago

New World just can’t catch a break. It wasn’t too long ago that players had discovered a gold dupe exploit that came with the server transfer features, and that resulted in Amazon Game Studios shutting down the entire economy indefinitely. Players couldn’t buy or sell items on the trading post, couldn’t pay taxes, and companies couldn’t keep up with town upgrades as they continued getting pummeled with wars and invasions.

Just when it seemed like the game was slowly recovering from that mess, yet another duplication exploit has been discovered. This time, players are able to duplicate furniture and other items, allowing them to completely bypass the process of having to farm materials to craft them.

In response, Amazon has halted the entire economy again. So yeah, no more trading post functions, no more player trades, no more sending gold to your company or other players, and no more taxes for upkeep. It’s rough. These features will go back online once the exploit has been patched out.

New World is now available on PC.

Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass Is 'Very, Very Sustainable,' Not 'Burning Cash'

2 years 6 months ago

Since its inception, Xbox Game Pass skeptics have wondered whether Microsoft's popular subscription program is too good to be true. With Xbox generally reluctant to share hard numbers, observers have speculated that the service is being treated as a loss leader in order to build up as many subscriptions as possible.

But during a press blitz intended to promote today's Xbox's 20th anniversary celebration, Xbox Executive Vice President Phil Spencer said that isn't the case, even with subscriber growth beginning to slow. Instead, he said the service is "very, very sustainable" and is "continuing to grow."

"I know there's a lot of people that like to write [that] we're burning cash right now for some future pot of gold at the end," Spencer told Axios in a new interview. "No. Game Pass is very, very sustainable right now as it sits. And it continues to grow."

Spencer's comments follow in the wake of Forza Horizon 5's successful launch, which was available as a Day 1 release to Game Pass subscribers. With more than 8 million players since launch, Forza Horizon 5 is the biggest Xbox Game Studios launch so far.
