Final Fantasy VII Figure + NFT Bundles Announced by Square Enix

1 year 9 months ago

Square Enix has always been rather keen on exploring the applications of NFT to its businesses, and today they announced a rather peculiar offer linked to Final Fantasy VII figures and merchandise.

The developer will release an action figure of Final Fantasy VII’s beloved protagonist Cloud Strife belonging to the Bring Arts line with an NFT twist.

The figure will come in a standard version priced at $129.99 and a Square Enix Store-exclusive Digital Plus Edition priced at $159.99.

Both versions will include a “exchange ticket to redeem for a digital certificate of authenticity on the Efinity network, which will require the ENJIN wallet app.”

For those unfamiliar with the terminology, that’s an NFT.

The DIgital Plus Edition will also include a “code to access a digital version of the collectible figure” accessible from a special website on smartphones and PC. At $30 premium, that’s one expensive 3D model.

Both versions will launch in November 2023.

On top of the figure, the publisher also announced the Final Fantasy VII Anniversary Art Museum Digital Card Plus, a series of 200 cards that can be collected both physically and digitally.

Each pack contains six physical trading cards randomly selected from all the available designs and one “exchange ticket that can be redeemed for any one digital card of choice on the Efinity network.”

If you’re interested in seeing what the Cloud figure looks like (alongside its 3D digital model), you can check out the gallery below.

Spider-Man Remastered PC Port Will Include DLSS and Ultrawide Monitor Support

1 year 9 months ago

Spider-Man Remastered is swinging onto PCs soon, and today, the official PlayStation blog revealed some of the new graphical features that will be available, assuming your PC can keep up with all the web slinging.

Spider-Man will look extra smooth swinging through the Big Apple thanks to DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). DLSS “increases graphics performance using dedicated Tensor Core AI processors found only on GeForce RTX GPUs, boosting frame rates with uncompromised image quality.”

If you’re a person with many monitors, you’re in luck! Spider-Man Remastered will support a number of display rations including NVIDIA Surround multi-monitor setups, ultrawide 21:9, and panoramic 32:9. You’ll also be able to customize a number of graphical options including SSAO, texture filtering, LoD quality, shadows, and more.

For gamers who haven’t gotten a chance to experience the scope of the PS5’s DualSense Controller, the game will support adaptive trigger feedback and haptic response as you take down baddies. This, however, will require the controller to be connected via a wire to experience the full set of the controller’s features.

Minecraft rejects NFTs and blockchain to ensure "a safe and inclusive experience"

1 year 9 months ago

Minecraft creator Mojang Studios has announced that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain won't be supported or allowed on the platform going forward.

The decision for rejecting the technology was attributed to the concern that they would created disparities between Minecraft players.

"We have these rules to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content," the statement said. "NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft."

Is Saints Row Like Grand Theft Auto? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

With Deep Silver’s reboot of the Saint’s Row franchise right around the corner, you may be wondering if it could fill a Grand Theft Auto-sized hole in your heart. The series is a lot like GTA in many aspects, but over the years, it’s also stepped out of Rockstar’s shadow to forge its own success and identity. Here’s everything you need to know about Whether Saints Row is like Grand Theft Auto.

Is Saints Row Like Grand Theft Auto?

The original Saints Row was released back in 2006 and featured the player’s character driving around an open world based on real American cities, engaging in shoot-outs, and taking on a host of missions from NPCs to advance the story. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The original Saints Row was coined as a ‘GTA Clone’ and to be honest for the first two entries, that description is pretty accurate.

However, even in those early days, a foundation was established that set Saint’s Row apart from GTA. Saints Row gave players the ability to create their own character and determine their ethnicity, fitness, face, and hairstyle. Saints Row 2 would later offer players the option of a female character. GTA didn’t include a character creator until 2013 with the release of GTA: Online.

Total War: Warhammer 3 Video Is All About Azazel’s Gameplay

1 year 9 months ago

Today Sega and Creative Assembly revealed an extensive video focusing on the newly-announced Champions of Chaos lords pack DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3.

The video focuses on the only legendary lord announced so far among the four that will be included in the package, and it’s Azazel, champion of Slaanesh.

We get to take an in-depth look at Azazel’s starting situation and how a typical game could evolve. While the video focuses on the gameplay, we get (for some reason) quite a bit of cinematics mixed in.

There’s also a lot of jumping around with montages, so don’t expect to see a canonic “let’s play” from start to finish. I guess being a bit whimsical is the nature of Slaanesh and its servants.

After all, the video starts with dissertations of Azazel’s beauty. Here in Italy, we say “every cockroach is beautiful to its mother,” I guess.

You can watch the video below and judge for yourself.

Total War: Warhammer 3 is currently available exclusively for PC.

The Champions of Chaos DLC will launch at the same time as Immortal Empires’ beta on August 23.

Minecraft Will Not Allow NFTs or Blockchain Technologies

1 year 9 months ago

As some developers embrace the controversial use of digital tokens, the folks at Minecraft have put their foot down on NFTs and blockchain technologies.

Their post comes in response to feedback from their community members asking for “clarification and transparency” on where Mojang Studios and Minecraft stand on the topic.

“While we are in the process of updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more precise guidance on new technologies, we wanted to take the opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow,” the post says. Just last year, Steam banned blockchain games and those that issued cryptocurrency.

Some creators use blockchain technology to sell things like skins and worlds, but the folks at Minecraft want their community to be a place “where everyone has access to the same content.” They believe NFTs “can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.”

They go on to say “to ensure players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset.”

Farthest Frontier: The Final Preview

1 year 9 months ago

Farthest Frontier is far from the first foray I've fared into the fir-flecked forests of an unforgiving land. But as survival city-builders go, it provides some targeted depth and realism in areas that often get ignored. While I ran out of things to hold my interest in games like Banished fairly quickly, the agriculture and food spoilage system here make running and developing a settlement much more engaging.

The premise is fairly simple. You get dumped in the woods with a few medieval settlers and have to survive harsh weather, disease, starvation, wolves, bears, and eventually – though I didn't run into any, thankfully – bandit attacks. Providing housing, firewood, fish, and berries is the first priority. But as your population grows, your town center levels up, and the tech tree is slowly unlocked, things get more complicated.

The most significant wrinkle here is the very detailed food spoilage system. If you were planning to rely on the rations you brought with you to survive the first winter… I have bad news for you. They're mostly going to rot faster than your villagers can eat them. Getting food is only half the battle, because you can make a giant pile of fish and berries in the warm summer months and it will all be inedible mush by the middle of winter. Thus the tech tree is just as much about developing ways to store and preserve food as it is about getting more of it.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Gets New Video All About the History of Iron Man

1 year 9 months ago

2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed another video about the turn-based tactical game Marvel’s Midnight Suns, dedicated to one of its playable superheroes.

Today’s video moves away from the gameplay and is all about explaining the long and complex history behind Iron Man, A.K.A. super-rich and adorably self-centered genius Tony Stark.

Unlike the previous videos, which were a brief introduction followed by a deep dive into Iron Man’s gameplay, this one explains how Iron Man was born, and the many changes he went through across the many changes and retcons of the comics.

Since Marvel’s Midnight Sun is decidedly focusing on magic and the supernatural, the video also delves into the sporadic encounters between the quintessential tech-based superhero and the forces of the arcane.

You can enjoy the video below.

Mortal Kombat movie director reportedly signs up to helm sequel

1 year 9 months ago

Following January's news that New Line Cinema is working on a sequel to last year's commercially successful Mortal Kombat movie reboot, Deadline reports that project's director, Simon McQuoid, will return to the helm for part two.

Last year's movie followed the adventures of Cole Young, a former professional MMA fighter - and a new character to the series - who becomes ensnared in a plot by sorcerer Shang Tsung to eliminate the new generation of Earthrealm's Mortal Kombat champions. Despite the return of plenty of familiar faces, and a strong opening fight (which you can see below), Eurogamer's resident Mortal Kombat fan Wesley Yin-Poole wasn't overly impressed by the end result.

Yet despite a generally lacklustre critical reception, the Mortal Kombat movie apparently did big numbers for New Line, opening at No. 1 at the US box office and ranking among the all-time top feature titles on HBO Max, where it simultaneously released. A sequel was almost inevitable then, and New Line confirmed its plans for a follow-up in January this year.

So I grabbed some friends and we started prototyping.”

According to Wildflower Interactive’s website, the studio is aiming to create “small-ish”, creatively charged, and uniquely-stylized games. What Does SMP Mean in Minecraft? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

If you’ve just got into Mojang Studios’ popular game and have begun exploring its many different game modes, you might well be wondering what SMP means in Minecraft. Here’s everything you need to know about the subject.

What Does SMP Mean in Minecraft? Answered

If you’ve heard the term SMP being thrown around in Minecraft, it’s actually a somewhat generic term within the genre that means “Survival Multiplayer.” Survival is a core mechanic of Minecraft and has been since its launch; SMP servers are an extension of that facet of the game, tasking players with surviving different block worlds that each have their own established lore and rules. Many SMP servers started off as a bunch of friends on a server before growing and becoming something of a community.

As you probably already know, Minecraft has three modes: Survival, Creative, and Hardcore. SMP is a variation on Survival mode. There are a few different categories of SMPs, but they are all more or less the same thing. The differences between them boil down to the extent to which they are modded and the PvP dynamics.

Common types of SMPs include Anarchy, Vanilla, Semi-Vanilla, Modded, Peaceful, and Factions.

Sonic Frontiers Cover Story – Brave New World

1 year 9 months ago

In the 1990s, few characters reached the heights of Sonic the Hedgehog. Shortly after the 1991 launch of the Blue Blur’s debut game on Sega Genesis, his popularity rivaled Nintendo’s behemoth Super Mario franchise. However, much like the roller coasters that inspired Sonic’s original gameplay and level design, the subsequent decades included plenty of highs and lows. Even after a quick jump off the starting line, many feared the series was doomed to fall short of its potential forever.

However, the brand has experienced something of a renaissance in recent years. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is perhaps nearly as popular now as when it burst onto the scene just over three decades ago, bolstered by blockbuster movies, beloved comics, and promising streaming shows. Sonic Mania proved a successful retro reinvention, but the core development staff at Sonic Team has yet to deliver the final piece of the puzzle: a mainline game restoring the series’ legacy as one of the premier platformers.

Sega and Sonic Team think they have that final component with Sonic Frontiers. I traveled to Burbank, California, the American headquarters of Sonic Team, to sink hours into the upcoming open-world game to see if it truly is the fresh direction the franchise needs.
