Former Xbox Boss: 'We Encouraged the Console Wars but Not to Create Division'

1 year 9 months ago

Peter Moore is known for wearing many hats around the games (and sports) industry. One stop in his career was at Microsoft where he helped oversee Xbox during the 360-era. In a new interview, Moore spoke about his time at Xbox and how they encouraged the console wars, but not for reasons you’d expect.

Moore recently made an appearance on one of Front Office Sports’ podcast to discuss his time as Liverpool FC CEO, in the process touching on his time at Xbox. While the games industry has shifted towards a more unified tone, during Moore’s tenure the console wars were arguably an even bigger part of the games industry — something Moore says was encouraged at Xbox.

“We encouraged the console wars, not to create division, but to challenge each other,” Moore says. “And when I say each other I mean Microsoft and Sony. If Microsoft hadn’t of stuck the course after the Xbox, after the Red Rings of Death, gaming would be a poorer place for it, you wouldn’t have the competition you have today.”

Moore joined Xbox in 2003 after serving as president and COO of Sega America. Moore is best remembered for helping launch the Xbox 360 and Dreamcast as well as his penchant for announcing high-profile games with fake tattoos. Xbox’s early dominance in the 360-era was driven by games like Halo as well as the launch of Xbox Live.

But Moore also talked about the lows such as the Red Ring of Death controversy. “If we didn’t resolve Red Rings of Death the way that we did I know darn well there’d be no Xbox today.”

New Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope Video Showcases Bowser, Spark Powers, and More

1 year 9 months ago

Ubisoft has released a six-minute video for the upcoming strategy game Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope that details some aspects of the adventure for the very first time. Specifically, it dives into details about Bowser, different planets in the game, as well as Spark Powers.

The video is in the format of interview with the game’s lead producer Xavier Manzanares. He shares details about each of these aspects and their roles in the game.

Manzanares begins by talking about new characters that are added to the game, such as Edge, one of the Rabbid heroes, and how each new character contributes uniquely to the gameplay. He also discusses Bowser as an ally in the game and how it is surprising for him to be on the same team as Mario.

Next, they examine some of the planets, such as Beacon Beach and how it is overcome with darkness when Mario and his friends arrive. We see some brief gameplay clips of other planets that you can expect to travel to in the game and how each one has multiple zones, focusing on discovery and exploration.

Each planet has wardens who are important allies that tell the heroes what is needed in order to restore peace. Manzanares touches on how they are full of personality.

Finally, the interview dives into Spark Powers and how two can be equip to each hero. They each come with active and passive bonuses that will help you gain the upper hand in battles. Any spark can be equip to any hero, allowing for plenty of different techniques to succeed.

Is Jon Snow Coming to MultiVersus?

1 year 9 months ago

With MultiVersus now in Open Beta and LeBron James in the fight, players are certainly wondering what is next. Warner Bros. has tons of IP under its umbrella, so there’s a lot of potential characters out there. For those wondering about other Game of Thrones characters, we are here to answer if Jon Snow is coming to MultiVersus.

Jon Snow in MultiVersus

At time of writing, there was no official word on Jon Snow joining the MultiVersus roster. Currently, the only known upcoming characters being added to MultiVersus are Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.

That is absolutely not to say that Jon Snow isn’t a possible addition. Considering the present roster features Arya Stark, Game of Thrones is a likely place the game will pull from in the future when it comes to new characters.

As a matter of fact, with LeBron James, there are only two characters in MultiVersus that come from live-action (or semi-live action, in the case of Space Jam 2) properties.

We will be sure to keep you up-to-date on this topic in the future, should there be an official announcement. For now, that is all we have to share on if Jon Snow is coming to MultiVersus.

There should also be some more Multiversus content down below that you may find helpful, as well as some other news about the title. They include plenty of other helpful guides, features, and quizzes you’ll surely love.

Dinosaur Survival Game The Lost Wild Gets Suspenseful New Trailer

1 year 9 months ago

Annapurna Interactive concluded its showcase today by debuting The Lost Wild, Great Ape Games dinosaur-laden survival game.

The Lost Wild was first announced last October with a pre-alpha trailer and is described as a first-person survival horror game. Players control an investigative reporter guided by a mysterious voice over the radio to explore abandoned Japanese facilities nestled within an island forest teeming with prehistoric wildlife. These dinos are highly intelligent and realistically behave like animals, featuring what Great Ape describes as self-preservation and reactive systemic AI behaviors.

Players can use stealth to avoid detection while exploring, create distractions, or repel dinos using items like flares and makeshift, non-lethal weaponry. You’ll spend much of the game scrounging for materials as you traverse ruins for clues about the island’s history and how you ended up in this dire situation.

According to the game’s FAQ, The Lost Wild won’t be arriving until late 2024 or early 2025. It has been confirmed for PC via Steam but will also come to unspecified consoles.

Katamari Creator Teases His Next Project

1 year 9 months ago

Keita Takahashi, the creator of the Katamari series, has a new game in the works. Unfortunately, it’s tough to know exactly what it is.

A teaser trailer premiered during today’s Annapurna Showcase showed a few seconds of close-up footage of an animated child snoring in his sleep. What does it mean? Your guess is as good as ours, but we fully expect it to be weird given Takahashi’s history.

Takahashi’s last big title was the colorful Wattam, released in 2019 and published by Annapurna. This new title looks to continue the relationship between the two partners.

Update: Keita Takahashi Is Making a New Game Under a New Company Called Uvula

1 year 9 months ago

Update 7/28/2022 2:45pm: Apparently, Keita Takahashi's next game may not be called Uvula. Uvula instead appears to be the name of his new studio.

In the trailer published to the Annapurna YouTube page, the game is just called "???" with the YouTube description including "Developed by UVULA."

Does that mean Takahashi's game will be about uvulas at all? Who knows? There IS a uvula in the teaser. But otherwise, it now seems we know even less about whatever he's up to than we did before. Still looks cute though.

Original story 7/28/2022:

During today's Annapurna Interactive Showcase we got a brief teaser for Takahashi's next game. It showed a boy in Takahashi's signature art style gently snoring away, with the camera zoomed in close on his uvula - you know, the little hangy down thing in the back of the throat. It slowly zoomed out to his face, and a dog licks the boy's cheek. That's all!

It's anyone's guess how this is going to make a game, but if anyone can do it, it's probably Takahashi. All of his past games have been extremely quirky and original, from Katamari (a game about rolling every object on earth into a giant katamari ball to send into space and turn into a star) to Wattam, a game that inexplicably involved a lot of poop.

Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch Get Next-Gen Upgrades

1 year 9 months ago

During today's Annapurna Interactive showcase, we got two surprising upgrade announcements to two beloved games: Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch.

First up, Outer Wilds is getting a 60fps upgrade on Xbox Series X, S, and PS5 that's coming September 15, and the upgrade is free if you own the game already. Developer Mobius Digital also confirmed that the game is still planned for Switch at some point in the future, but haven't given a date for that just yet.

Meanwhile, What Remains of Edith Finch is getting a 60fps upgrade and 4k on Xbox Series X and PS5, and that update is not only free, it's also available today.

Both of these are pleasant surprise upgrades for two widely acclaimed games. We called Edith Finch "one of the finest magical-realism stories in all of games" back when we reviewed it on launch in 2017. OuterWilds was similarly beloved in 2019, and we called it "a true adventure in ways most games never achieve." Its DLC released late last year, Echoes of the Eye, was a "wonderful return" to the system of the original.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Has Been Delayed

1 year 9 months ago

The highly anticipated co-op shooter Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has been delayed.

The upcoming Left 4 Dead-style co-op game, set in the Warhammer 40k universe, was due to be released on September 13. But the PC version has now been pushed back until November 30, 2022, with the console edition launching on Xbox Series X|S shortly after.

“Delaying a game is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions a developer faces and one we are not excited about making,” said Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund via Twitter. “Still, we hope this speaks to our commitment to taking the time necessary and doing whatever it takes to get you the best possible game.”

Specifically, it looks as though the Fatshark team needs more time to improve the game before it ships… and while that means a bit of a wait for Warhammer 40k fans, it’s certainly as good a reason as any.

“While we have been humbled by the great feedback on the game so far, we also need more time to improve stability, performance, and to mature key systems,” he explained. “Each is critical to making sure we have the best possible experience for you, the players.”

Despite the delay, it’s not back to the drawing board for Darktide.

Wahlund also revealed that a series of beta and technical tests will be launching in the coming months… and they need Warhammer 40,000 fans to help out. If you want to participate in the beta, just sign up at darktide.live/signup.

Thirsty Suitors Gameplay Trailer Highlights Wacky Turn-Based Battles And Skateboarding

1 year 9 months ago

Thirsty Suitors kicked off the Annapurna Showcase with a new gameplay explainer breaking down its uniquely presented battle system and a surprising exploration segment.

The game, which premiered during last year's Game Awards, centers on Jala, a young woman who must reconcile with her exes and friends while dealing with ( or, more specifically, disappointing ) her demanding parents before her sister's wedding. The game revolves around a turn-based battle system where Jala faces a former lover, which reimagines their attempts to find common ground as an RPG battle.

The trailer showed off moves such as Thirsty Taunts to manipulate an ex's emotions. Your old flames can manifest their inflated egos into alternate realities, where they reign supreme as the exaggerated versions of their self-perceptions. Thankfully, you knock them down a peg by enlisting the help of family members as if they were Final Fantasy summons, such as a giant version of Jala's mother dishing out significant damage. Battles conclude not with a knockout but with Jala and her adversary working out their issues.

The Team Behind Kentucky Route Zero Is Making a New Game

1 year 9 months ago

The team behind Kentucky Route Zero is working on a new project. We don't know what it is yet, but it looks like once again, there's a dog in it.

In today's Annapurna Interactive showcase, studio Cardboard Computer teased its upcoming project, which does not yet have an official title, date, or platforms attached. We did get some glimpses of them working on development, specifically on a model of a dog that's significantly goofier than the one in Kentucky Route Zero, but that's about it.

The team did drop some teases. They suggested during the showcase tha thtis new project would have a "different tempo" than Kentucky Route Zero, one that's "faster" and "hopefully funnier." They also said that this is the first project where Cardboard Computer is “really focusing on performance as a core part of the piece," though given the studio's past history it's a bit unclear as to whether they mean visual performance, voice acting performance, or literal performance art. Kentucky Route Zero, after all, was structured as a five-act play, so any of these are possible.

We might have to wait a bit to find out exactly what the Kentucky Route Zero folks are up to - after all, their first game took them around ten years to complete and was released in multiple episodic installments over that time.

You can get a full rundown of everything announced at today's Annapurna Interactive showcase in our roundup.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide delayed to November on PC, Xbox "shortly after"

1 year 9 months ago

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide - the promising co-op shooter/melee hybrid from Vermintide developer Fatshark - has been delayed again. It's now due for a PC release on 30th November, with the Xbox Series X/S version arriving "shortly after".

This will, of course, be the second delay for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, which was announced at the tail-end of 2020 for release the following year. Unfortunately, its development - as with many recent games - was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and Fatshark ultimately made the decision to push its launch into 2022 in order to "focus on the level of quality on release, as well as invest in more systems to support Darktide for years to come."

March finally brought the news fans had been waiting for, with Darktide receiving a 13th September release date on PC and Xbox Series X/S, but that's now shifted again.

My Hero Academia’s Season 5 OVAs Are a Welcome Respite From the Chaos That’s to Come

1 year 9 months ago

As I rolled the credits on the My Hero Academia Season 5 OVAs, I felt something the anime hasn’t left me with in a while: Relief.

To be sure, the anime has been intentionally fraught with high-stakes confrontations and escalating conflicts between the heroes and villains. Shigaraki is gaining ground in his goal to tear the hero-centric world down, and Midoriya is racing against time to get his many One for All powers in check before their eventual confrontation. It’s all set to come to a head in the sixth season, where the Heroes and Villains are prepared to collide in a decisive clash of good vs. evil.

It’s a great setup and is sure to provide some payoff to the last few seasons’ laying of groundwork for the wider story. However, it’s hard not to feel like certain elements have fallen to the wayside as a result. Chief among them is the fact that while a superhero-filled society can have some intriguing problems to address, there’s also plenty of room for fun and hijinks.

This is where the latest OVAs come in. Neither covers canon material from the series and instead gives fans a chance to see elements of the world that haven’t been fully explored yet. One sees superheroes duking it out in an HLB baseball match where powers are used to full effect. The other sees heroes unable to overcome an accidental criminal’s quirk through fighting, instead sending them off to explore other means of resolving a villain’s troublemaking.

And honestly, they’re a blast to watch. For every cheesy bit that goes on a bit too long, there’s quality animation and a decent character arc that plays out. The tropes which have been done to death in the show are used sparingly, and characters that have been pushed from the spotlight get an opportunity to return for a fun scene or two.
