11 Real Chinese Foods In Genshin Impact

My favorite part of Genshin Impact isn’t the exploration, or the combat, or the characters. It’s the food. I love entering new areas in the fictionalized world of Teyvat and discovering ingredients and recipes.

Blizzard celebrate “incredible decrease” in toxic chat

3 years 6 months ago

Ashe from Overwatch poses with her robot pal.

In a new virtual ‘fireside chat’, Blizzard head honcho J. Allen Brack has given an update on the success of their anti-toxicity systems. They’ve been using machine learning to help combat abusive chat and bad behaviour in Overwatch and Heroes Of The Storm for a while, and recently brought the system to World Of Warcraft’s public channels. It sounds like a success there too. Brack also announced that the next BlizzCon, which is online-only, will be free for everyone to watch.

Dawn Of The Final Day

3 years 6 months ago

While doomscrolling through Twitter the past few days, I noticed a lot of people making the same Majora’s Mask joke. Today does feel like the Final Day, doesn’t it? Either the moon will crash into the Earth, or the clock will reset and Americans will have another chance to maybe get it right this time. Problem is, we…

Original Mass Effect Trilogy Cast Reunites For N7 Day

3 years 6 months ago

BioWare sticks true to their patterns by making us overwhelmingly want for every crumb they drop our way, especially in regards to those illustrious Mass Effect trilogy remaster reports. The Mass Effect trilogy, which ended in March 2012 (but never in our hearts), continues to be a reigning staple in the RPG world. With Commander Shepard – the undeniably strong hero facing tremendous odds, companions that burrow their way into your heart, and a storyline that is as epic as the characters brought into it – BioWare gave a true gift with this epic franchise. If you're a hardcore fan like I am, you'll be excited to find out that the original trilogy cast is reuniting for a special N7 Day panel!

Jennifer Hale brought the iconic Commander Shepard to life as the female version of our beloved protagonist, and she couldn't wait to share the good news about the crew reuniting once more:

Fortnite v14.50 Update Removes Double Movement, Adds New Jetpacks & Cosmetics

3 years 6 months ago

Fortnite’s latest update has enraged some pro players and others in the competitive scene following the removal of ‘Double Movement,’ alongside adding in new jetpacks, cosmetics and XP challenges.

Double Movement was a method used by mouse and keyboard players where they assign each movement direction to two keys. It’s supposed to give mouse and keyboard players the movement advantages that come with using a controller with two analog sticks. Here’s a handy video to help explain it in more detail.

However, since the release of Fortnite’s v14.50 update, Double Movement keybinds no longer appear to be effective. Players can still assign two keys with the same directional movement, but it no longer has the same, desired effect.

In the same hand that Epic taketh away, they also giveth. New jetpacks were added into Fortnite that have been improved since they last featured in the Battle Royale title, and as per usual, a number of new cosmetics such as the Ghost Rider skin were added into the game as part of the v14.50 update.

Finally, there’s a few new bonus challenges that will release later in the week that were added into the game in the update. These will certainly come in handy for players trying to wrap up those last shiny foil styles for your Battle Pass characters.

Fall Guys Now Has a Godzilla Costume

3 years 6 months ago

Starting today you can now purchase a Godzilla costume in Mediatonic’s hit party battle royale game, Fall Guys. The costume should be available in the store today and will cost a total of 10 Crowns. Apparently, this announcement coincides with Godzilla day, which is a celebration filled with announcements related to the Godzilla brand.

Now, this Godzilla costume won’t give you atomic breath or healing abilities, but you’ll look really menacing, maybe.

Devolver Digital released a gameplay trailer of the new costume in action. You can check it out down below:

I for one can’t wait to hop online in Fall Guys to see everyone wearing the costume. It’ll probably look a little something like this tweeted image from the Fall Guys Twitter account:

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition - Vergil Hands On Preview

3 years 6 months ago

Devil May Cry 5 is already a special game in the hearts of many, but the next-gen version is about to get even more special thanks to the addition of everyone’s favorite blue-clad brooding son of Sparda, Vergil. I got to play the PlayStation 5 version of DMC5 Special Edition to give him a test drive, and while he feels very similar to previous iterations, Vergil’s got more than a few tricks up his sleeves.

If you’ve played as Vergil in previous Devil May Cry special editions, especially his iteration from Devil May Cry 4, you’ll feel right at home with DMC 5’s version. For those unfamiliar, he uses three weapons: his trusty Yamato sword, the Beowulf gauntlets introduced in Devil May Cry 3, and the Mirage Edge, which is virtually the same as the Force Edge that he used in Devil May Cry 4. He also has a unique mechanic called Concentration, which rewards the player for playing Vergil in a way that suits his confident, stoic, and elitist personality.

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=devil-may-cry-5-special-edition-playstation-5-showcase-screenshots&captions=true"]

You see, Vergil is not the kind of character that would just rush head into action like Dante or Nero would. He’s calm, collected, and above all else, precise in his movements and strikes. As such, if you’re standing still or walking slowly towards your enemies, the concentration meter will start to fill. If you start running around, missing wildly, or get hit, the gauge will plummet. The higher your concentration, the more effective each of your weapons become: the range and damage of Yamato will increase, Beowulf will be able to charge up an additional level to deal massive damage, and the Mirage Edge will take on multi-hit properties.

Friday the 13th support killed off, and I guess that's pretty fitting

3 years 6 months ago

There's been another gruesome murder, this time of Camp Crystal Lake's most popular camper: Dedicated servers.

These stories always end the same. Survival is a matter of how long rather than will they make it. Inevitably, there's always a body count and some grief. That's just the score when you wade into these waters.

Like the victims in a slasher flick, online multiplayer games aren't long for this world. Friday the 13th: The Game is the latest example. Developer IllFonic will stop supporting it this month. The game is getting a final patch in the coming weeks and then the dedicated servers are being turned off.

It's a grim fate for Friday the 13th but it's not the end of the road. The game will still be playable via peer-to-peer connections. IllFonic is also keeping the database servers in commission so that progress can be tracked. Friday the 13th isn't dead, but it's also not alive and well. It's been critically wounded.

That's the circle of life, I guess. Kill, kill, kill, kill, be killed. IllFonic has other killers to worry about nowadays.

Todd Howard Reveals New Starfield Details, Elder Scrolls 6 Day One Game Pass Addition Confirmed

3 years 6 months ago

Bethesda revealed its new IP Starfield back in 2018 as a small tease to prove to fans that the company wasn't abandoning single-player adventures following Fallout 76 concerns. While the teaser had many intrigued, it was the barest of teasers that left so many wanting more. While we still don't have a concrete account of what Starfield will have to offer, director Todd Howard did recently share a few more details about the new game.

In a recent interview with GameIndustry.biz (via Reddit) during the Brighton Digital Conference, Howard teased a few more details about the new IP. For those concerned, the Bethesda exec confirmed that there will be no multiplayer aspects to this singleplayer adventure. He also revealed that this, like The Elder Scrolls VI, will focus on procedural generation as well to help create life within the game's settings, and that the universe of Starfield will be so much larger than Fallout 76. That's no small feat, given that Fallout 76 is four times the size of Skyrim.

Microsoft phasing out Xbox party chat P2P voice connections to beef up security

Bethesda Engine Is Getting Its Largest Ever Upgrade Before Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6

3 years 6 months ago
Bethesda's Todd Howard has said that the company's current engine – which will be used for Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 – is getting what could be its largest upgrade yet, and is being worked on by the largest number of employees the company has ever assigned to engine work. Speaking during the Develop:Brighton keynote session, Howard was asked how much work was being done on Bethesda's proprietery Creation engine, which has attracted criticism in the past. "We too will acknowledge it needs more work than it has in previous times," Howard replied, "and we do that between generations - and we've been doing it. I can say that the engine work started a while ago." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/29/bethesdas-todd-howard-hard-to-imagine-elder-scrolls-6-as-an-xbox-exclusive"] It sounds as though this is a major rework, too – perhaps the largest leap for the engine in its long history (Creation was born out of the older Gamebryo Engine, which was initially released in 1997). "We have more people doing engine work now, by a factor of five, probably than we've ever had," Howard explained. "So the overhaul in our engine is the largest we've probably ever had, maybe larger than Morrowind to Oblivion." Howard went on to explain that there are elements of Creation that Bethesda continues to like, but pointed out the sheer number of changes being made: "There are things we do that we still like. The way we build our worlds, the way people can mod it – these are things that I think are fundamentally good about our tech stack.

Which Dark Pictures Game is Better: Little Hope or Man of Medan?

3 years 6 months ago

The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of bite-sized gaming experiences from developer Supermassive Games, with each installment tackling a different subgenre of horror. The latest, Little Hope, came out just in time for Halloween

Players are given the ability to influence events that affect the way these stories ultimately end, with all of the cast or none of them surviving, or any conceivable combination in between.

The Dark Pictures began with Man of Medan, which is set aboard a ghostly ship and sees a group of trust-fund kids attempting to make it through the night, as they are beset by madness and otherworldly apparitions.

Little Hope, meanwhile, sees a group of survivors stranded in a Silent Hill-esqe town in which a series of brutal witch trials took place during its colonial past, and from where they cannot escape.

There are a total of eight entries planned, and the next installment, House of Ashes, was briefly teased at the end of Little Hope (as Little Hope was at the end of Man of Medan) and looks to have a military/monster theme ala Alien or Predator, although we don’t have much to go on yet.

The Tarn Commandments: playing Dwarf Fortress with new rules set by its sadistic community

3 years 6 months ago

A single candle illuminates fearful dwarves surrounded by beak dogs.

Once upon a time, seven dwarves set out into the jungle with the simple dream of constructing an underground chimp jail. You can’t write sentences like that about most games. But in the context of Dwarf Fortress, the legendary world simulator under permanent construction by programmer Tarn Adams and his brother Zach, it is a perfectly reasonable statement.

Dwarf Fortress is my favourite game. And since it’s essentially a machine for generating weird fantasy stories, it’s even more fun to narrate than it is to actually play. Hence my previous diary series – The Basement Of Curiosity – which concerned the aforementioned chimp zoo. After a lengthy 25-episode run, the Basement finally came to an end on camera, at this year’s EGX Digital event. And while I won’t spoil its conclusion, I strongly recommend you watch it for yourself, right here. The ending will… surprise you.

The Demon's Souls remaster will provide nearly 200 in-game hint videos

3 years 6 months ago

Before Sony first showed off its "card-based" UI for the PS5, there were a lot of questions as to what the PS5's menus would even look like. But buried underneath the new look and feel was a very curious feature: official guides.

Similar to a concept Stadia showed off a while back, Sony wants players to stay in the game rather than look elsewhere for information, which they'll facilitate through "activities." In short, if you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you can access short little videos or hints that will show you where collectibles are; or how to solve a certain portion of the game.

What's new with Gears 5 on Xbox Series X?

3 years 6 months ago

One of the trends we're seeing with this new generation of consoles is the arrival of visual updates for last generation games - basically, new features designed to take advantage of more powerful hardware. Gears 5 is one of the first titles revealed to be receiving this sort of update and along with upcoming story DLC, it feels almost like a soft relaunch. In the process, one of the best-looking games for Xbox One looks better than ever - it's basically a graphics and performance upgrade with some cool new features added in.

To get the basics out of the way first, Gears 5 retains the use of dynamic resolution scaling, but based on pixel counting a selection of shots, it seems to average out at around 1728p during gameplay, with full 2160p manifesting in less busy situations. Interestingly, the lower bounds is still 1080p - just as it was on Xbox One X - but it's extremely uncommon for resolution to hit this level. By comparison, Xbox One X could drop to near 1080p much more often.

The multiplayer mode is a little more aggressive with its dynamic resolution solution owing to its higher performance targets - yes, 120 frames per second is the target - but it still looks solid. Image quality was already good thanks to Unreal's temporal anti-aliasing implementation and it's improved here thanks to a higher average resolution. We don't yet have a Series S console but we were told that Gears 5 maxes out at 1440p on the high-end suggesting an average resolution somewhere between Xbox One and Xbox One X while still hitting the same frame-rate targets as Series X.

Review: The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope

3 years 6 months ago

Supermassive Games is serving up another communal horror adventure just in time for Halloween.

Whether you dug Until Dawn and only Until Dawn, or you also played Man of Medan and thought it was decent cheesy fun, or you're removed from this whole Dark Pictures Anthology saga but are kinda in the mood for a suspenseful, not-too-spooky Halloween game, I have to give Little Hope the thumbs-up.

It's striking at the right place and the right time with the right setup: a town haunted by witch trials.

The last Marvel's Avengers datamining efforts uncovered quite a bit

3 years 6 months ago

Some time ago, a rather large datamining effort uncovered a ton of potential characters that could enter the world of Marvel's Avengers. Now, someone else seems to have figured out which ones are coming next.

While we know that Kate Bishop and Clint Barton are coming in early 2021 as a Hawkeye duo (as well as Spider-Man as a PlayStation exclusive at some point); we have little knowledge of what's actually arriving after that. Thanks to Avengers fan Miller, who has been tweeting out the latest discoveries, it seems like Black Panther and War Machine could be next: as their character models are fully visible.

This could also be our first confirmation of additional levels and missions, too. The phrases "Crystal of Kadavus, Draupnir Tactigon, Norn Stone of Protection, Norn Stone of Alliance, Norn Stone of Attunement, and Norn Stone of the Fanatic," were datamined, which could lead to potential future storylines.

Of course, none of this is official yet, and could be content left on the cutting room floor that may never see the light of day. Given the situation this game is in, some of the stuff that's been datamined could be cut at some point. Square Enix still has to ship the "next-gen upgrades" and they are already behind schedule with DLC rollouts.
