New Valorant Act 3 Battlepass Revealed; Features Very Cool Weapon Skins

2 years 5 months ago

Valorant Episode 3, Act 3, is just around the corner from its release next week, and so today Riot Games is offering us our first glimpse of the new battlepass content. From the looks of it, this promises to be one of the best yet with a very cool range of different weapon skins and festive accessories.

A press release sent to Twinfinite features a comment from senior producer Preeti Khanolkar, who sums up its contents nicely when asked about the inspirations behind its design:

“This Battlepass has a lot of fantastic Player Cards related to Agents. Some of my favorites are the “Unstoppable // Viper” card, which is a reimagining of her original card from the Closed Beta. There’s also the “Downtime // Omen”card, which shows Omen knitting—of all things. The “Versus // KAY/O +Brimstone” card is a great lore card that builds upon other KAY/O and Brimstoneaccessories that players have analyzed in the past. This Battlepass also has some really gorgeous and well-designed weapon skins: Aero, Genesis, and Goldwing. The Genesis Arc is the first melee of that type (lovingly called “the protractor”) to be included in the Battlepass

The three different weapon skinlines can be viewed in the gallery below.

Disciples: Liberation Review

2 years 5 months ago

A tactical RPG adventure, Disciples: Liberation is a fun outing in a fantasy world that puts you in the shoes of a classic RPG protagonist with special powers, a motley crew of companions, and a bone to pick with fate... then just keeps escalating the stakes further than you'd ever expect them to go. In fact, it punches above its weight class in the quality of its combat and content, but lets itself down with a disorganized mess of extra systems and some very prominent bugs.

Blending a turn-based tactics game with a proper RPG, Disciples: Liberation has you wander through isometric environments as you play through a hefty 80-hour RPG story – I did more than a few sidequests and optional fights, ending up at 92 hours played. It's not an open world, but it's not linear either; each chapter is divided up into a few regions that can be tackled in any order. Within those regions you fight a lot of turn-based battles, and it's good that those are fun and (aside from being a bit slow at times) pretty openly designed because there are a lot of them.

It's a suitably sprawling, cosmic story for Nevandaar, a fantasy world that's dark and terrible, but still allows for goodness and redemption. Your character, a gutter-born mercenary named Avyanna, has plenty of dialogue choices: Kind ones denoted by halos, aggressive ones denoted by horns, and snarky ones denoted by Avyanna's own twilight wings symbol. The sidequests have enough diversity, and enough compelling characters, that I couldn't always easily decide who to side with.

Fall For Indies: Darkest Dungeon 2 And October's Spookiest Titles

2 years 5 months ago

Neighborhoods are starting a transformation from ordinary dwelling spaces to fright fests as we draw closer to Halloween. Lawns are filling up with the decorative deceased and – unfortunately for people who rightfully fear spiders – oversized arachnids. And it seems like indies can’t resist the lure of the upcoming spine-chilling holiday either. A noticeable chunk of indies coming out the next few weeks have a particularly frightening slant to them. However, the news might be even more ghastly, as one of October’s most anticipated releases recently fell victim to a delay.

A Trick and A Treat

Even the indie space has its juggernaut projects, and the end of October was looking ripe for a massive harvest. But current events have mirrored the season’s candy-gathering traditions, offering players a trick and treat.

Marvel & Skydance New Media Developing New Action-Adventure Game

2 years 5 months ago

Marvel Games and Skydance New Media have just announced that they’ll be partnering together to create a new narrative action-adventure game. This is a notable reveal, not only because of Marvel’s general popularity, but also because Skydance New Media is helmed by Amy Hennig — an award-winning writer and director who worked on Legacy of Kain, Jak and Daxter, and the Uncharted series.

According to the news post on the Skydance website, the game will feature a completely original story set in the Marvel universe that’ll be brought to life by “an accomplished crew of developers with decades of AAA experience in action and adventure gaming.”

It’ll be the very first project for Skydance New Media since Amy Hennig and former EA executive Julian Beak were brought on board when forming this interactive division of Skydance Media in 2019.

Here is what Hennig had to say about the Skydance collaboration with Marvel on this project:

The Marvel Universe epitomizes all the action, mystery and thrills of the pulp adventure genre that I adore and lends itself perfectly to an interactive experience. It’s an honor to be able to tell an original story with all the humanity, complexity, and humor that makes Marvel characters so enduring and to enable our players to embody these heroes that they love.

There’s no release date or even a release window for the game just yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop as more details get announced.

YouTube has unveiled new stats on its gaming content, as well as a plan for how it aims to grow that market on its platform in the near future. This year has seen some tremendous growth, with over 800 billion gaming-related views, over 90 million hours live-streamed, and over 250 million uploads being logged in just the first half of 2021.

According to YouTube's global head of gaming, Ryan Wyatt, the streaming platform's plan to expand will involve investing in more content creators such as Dr Lupo and TimTheTatMan, continued support for esports through events such as the Minecraft Championships Pride 2021, and continuing to promote short-form videos with the $100 million Shorts Fund.

YouTube also plans to work on creating new tools that will help viewers discover live content, add more monetization options, expand the available options for chat, and continue developing the Live Redirect for Gaming feature which will send viewers into other streams.

"YouTube Gaming recognizes that content creators will be more important than ever to game developers over the next 5 years," Wyatt explained in a blog post. "It's no longer about bringing games to creators when they want marketing support on launch. They'll be there as true partners--influencing creative direction, functionality, and formats."

Witcher Season 2 Official Trailer Features More Monsters & Ciri

2 years 5 months ago

Earlier today, the official Netflix YouTube channel released the official trailer for season two of The Witcher TV series. It has been about two years since season one was released on the streaming service and now the wait for the follow-up to the debut is just under two months away. This news is coming right after the announcement last month that season three is on the way as well.

At the beginning of the trailer, a shot from above shows Geralt wading through some shallow water thigh-high water. Then it cuts to a further shot and we can see a winged monster approaching the powerful witcher from a distance. We don’t get to see a close-up of the monster, but Geralt doesn’t look all that concerned by its presence.

As it cuts away from that first shot of The Witcher season two official trailer we see multiple shots of impressive set pieces like a scorched battlefield, a snow-covered courtyard, a treacherous ravine, and many more. All throughout these shots, Geralt is sharing a drink with and speaking to Nivellen.

When Nivellen brings up that people are talking about the end of days coming, Geralt reminds his friend that he has lived through three supposed end of days three times. Naturally, this means Geralt doesn’t buy the notion that the world is coming to an end.

As the trailer continues, there are a few shots of Ciri before her training with Geralt. There’s a shot that looks like it’s her first time putting her hands on a sword.

Near the end of the trailer, we see Geralt and Ciri taking on a giant enemy that resembles a Treant. This is likely a little while after Geralt has spent some time working with Ciri since it looks like she’s holding her own pretty well against the attacks of this large monster.

Amy Hennig and Skydance's Unannounced Game Is a New Marvel Project

2 years 5 months ago

Remember Amy Hennig's big AAA, story-driven project with Skydance Media announced back in 2019? Good news: it's a Marvel game.

Skydance announced the collaboration with Marvel Entertainment today, though it's not ready to reveal further details about which Marvel characters might be involved in their endeavor. All we know is that it is being marketed as a "narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game" and "a completely original story and take on the Marvel Universe."

“I can’t imagine a better partner than Marvel for our first game,” said Hennig. “The Marvel Universe epitomizes all the action, mystery and thrills of the pulp adventure genre that I adore and lends itself perfectly to an interactive experience. It’s an honor to be able to tell an original story with all the humanity, complexity, and humor that makes Marvel characters so enduring and to enable our players to embody these heroes that they love.”

Hennig's partnership with Skydance has been running for a few years now, working alongside EA veteran and executive producer Julian Beak to kick off a brand new interactive division for the company. Skydance has historically been a movie production company responsible for films such as the Mission: Impossible franchise, Star Trek, Top Gun: Maverick, and Terminator: Dark Fate. But it's also had one relatively successful video game launch with VR title The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners.

Mushrooms, mould and killer plants: the best horror isn't animal, it's vegetable

2 years 5 months ago

Ever since I witnessed a little red-and-blue plumber-man tumble into the gnashing jaws of a Piranha Plant, I knew vegetables weren’t to be trusted. I see my suspicion of all things green and floral as a natural, even instinctual thing. We ourselves aren’t vegetable, and differences so often motivate our deepest fears. The vegetal realm is entirely inaccessible to us, its behaviour strange and habitats dark. From the carnivorous Venus flytrap to the bleeding tooth fungus, from plants that smell like rotting corpses to one's that trap prey and dissolve them with digestive fluids, it’s an unknown, often dangerous world, and one that overlaps closely with our own. And it makes for a compelling game.

Halo Infinite’s Craig Meme Gave 343 ‘More Time’ To Perfect the Brutes

2 years 5 months ago

The developers of Halo Infinite have discussed their “love-hate relationship” with the Brute that started the Craig meme. While the subject of ridicule, the character model ultimately granted the team at 343 Industries more time to bring Halo Infinite up to a better level of quality.

“While it was fun to see the community gravitate towards Craig, he unfortunately represented some content and systems that were not ready for prime time in that demo,” said Steve Dyck, Character & Combat Director on Halo Infinite, in a new Halo Insider post. “The positive outcome of Craig was that he was one of the factors in gaining some more time to finish work and get Brutes to a place where the team is happy with them. This is one of the many positive examples of 343 working with and aligning with the Halo community around expectations. Players who look hard enough will still be able to find some evidence of Craig in Halo Infinite, his spirit lives on!”

'Craig' is the name given by the community to a Brute that featured in Halo Infinite's first campaign reveal, which was the subject of ridicule and blowback due to the quality of the graphics, among other things.

While discussing the character designs of Halo Infinite, Dyck also noted that the team is looking back to the Bungie Halo games to influence its art direction. “In terms of which part of the legacy we looked to for inspiration, we settled most around the Halo 3 / Halo: Reach timeframe,” he explained.

An ode to Kain from Blood Omen and his Legacy - including Untitled Goose Game

2 years 5 months ago

Steam user genre tags can be awful. Cyberpunk 2077 was, for example, tagged ‘masterpiece’ for months before the first gameplay trailer, while the much more reasonable and catchy ‘looks cool sure but too early to say anything definitive if we’re being adults about it’ tag was strangely absent. Happily, they are sometimes wonderful, like the tag alongside ‘comedy’ and ‘indie’ that categorises avian arsehole adventure Untitled Goose Game as having a ‘villain protagonist’.

I’ve been thinking about villain protagonists a fair amount this week because GOG just graced our collective thinking tellies with 1996 Zelda-like Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, in all its richly overwrought, gothic, inimitably voice-acted splendour. I would estimate this news finds you, reader, in one of two categories: those who give not a fig, and those who give so many figs they are currently scrabbling the world’s few remaining fig-bearing trees, searching vainly for an adequate quantity of figs.
