The WD Black SN750 1TB NVMe SSD is £87 for 1TB: good deal

2 years 5 months ago

The WD Black SN750 is a super-fast PCIe 3.0 SSD - and the 1TB model is down to £87 at Amazon UK, a historic low price. That's a fantastic price for what was once among the fastest NVMe SSDs on the planet, with read speeds up to nearly 3500MB/s... before the advent of faster (and more expensive) PCIe 4.0 drives in the last couple of years.

Still, in terms of value for money, this TLC drive with a DRAM cache is going to be hard to beat - especially as the only real competitors tend to come with QLC NAND or without a DRAM cache, both of which sacrifice performance to hit lower price points!

Ubisoft Has Quietly Delayed Tom Clancy's The Division Heartland

2 years 5 months ago

You'd be forgiven if, glancing through Ubisoft's earnings announcements today, you didn't immediately catch onto yet another game delay stealthily snuck in: it's Tom Clancy's The Division Heartland.

When free-to-play Heartland was first announced back in May of this year, it was given a broad release window of sometime either this year or next year. Just a few days later, Ubisoft clarified that a bit to fiscal 2021 - 2022, meaning the period from April 2021 running up to March 2022.

Heartland skipped E3 earlier this year, and Ubisoft seemed quiet on it during its last quarterly earnings, leaving some wondering if it wasn't about time to start showing the game off a bit more if it was indeed coming this fiscal year. Turns out, it is not. Ubisoft's latest quarterly earnings report stated that Heartland would join Prince of Persia and Rocksmith+ in the following fiscal year running from April 2022 to March of 2023.

Notably, both Prince of Persia and Rocksmith have, at last report, been scheduled for sometime in calendar 2022. We haven't heard specific word on whether these will edge back further into 2023, but Ubisoft does appear to be giving itself some wiggle room there.

Riders Republic Stunts Guide - What To Know About The Various Control Options

2 years 5 months ago

Riders Republic, Ubisoft's new extreme sports game, is out now, welcoming players to its giant, national park-themed playground. With skis, snowboards, bikes, wingsuits, and snowmobiles to choose from, Riders Republic has no shortage of things to do.

When you first hop into the game, though, you may be overwhelmed by the various different options for controlling how bikes, skis, and boards control. Even veterans of the game's predecessor, Steep, might find themselves confused by the new control schemes. In addition, the control schemes affect how many points you earn during events, which can quickly add up and make the difference between finishing in the middle of the pack and winning it all.

With that in mind, we've put together some tips and explanations for what all of the different control options do so that you can be better prepared for getting your start in Riders Republic.

Controller Preset

One of the first screens you're presented with when starting up Riders Republic for the first time gives an option to choose between two preset control schemes: Racer and Trickster, which apply identically to skis, boards, and bikes. As the names suggest, the former emphasizes ease of use while in race events that deprioritize stunts, while the latter gives you more granular control over spins in order to rack up big points. What that screen doesn't tell you is that there's actually a third option, Steep, which is built specifically for fans of Ubisoft Annecy's previous game.

Racer

If you're a total newcomer to Ubisoft Annecy's games, extreme sports games in general, or are just more interested in going fast without bothering with all the fancy spins, Racer is for you. This scheme gives you full camera control on the right analogue stick, while spins and flips are moved to the face buttons.

Facebook ditching Oculus branding as part of company name change to Meta

2 years 5 months ago

Facebook is ditching the Oculus branding for its range of VR devices as part of the embattled company's newly announced name change to Meta. Additionally, it says it plans to remove requirements to have a Facebook account to use its hardware, starting "sometime next year".

The Oculus brand has been synonymous with VR for almost a decade now, and Facebook opted to keep the name when it purchased the Oculus company in 2014 - although it has been steadily phasing the name out for all but its VR hardware in recent years.

Darkest Dungeon 2 Enemies: The Profanity Count Leaders So Far

2 years 5 months ago

Darkest Dungeon has always been a game that could inspire some of our most colorful language with challenging enemies and creatively devious encounters. Its sequel was recently released in Early Access and is carrying that torch forward. Though the game has not been out long, we've already run across several enemies that have made our blood boil, muscles tense, and obscenities fly from our mouths - which makes defeating them all the sweeter. Here are the top contenders on this dubious, profanity-laden leaderboard so far.

Inscryption Cuckoo Clock Guide - How To Solve The Clock Puzzle

2 years 5 months ago

Fighting through a tough deck-building roguelike card game is central to Inscryption, but if you want to make real progress in the game, you'll need to uncover the many secrets hidden in the cabin in which the card game takes place. You're free to get up and explore, and doing so will give you hints as to the deeper story taking place and how you might escape the frightening, homicidal opponent who insists you keep playing.

One big element of the winding chain of puzzles hidden in the cabin is the cuckoo clock hanging on one of the walls. You can adjust its hands with a few buttons, but without a sense of what time to set it to, you'll struggle to open the clock's two doors. Solving those puzzles is key--one isn't necessary to progress but can be very helpful, while the other is essential. To find the clues you need, however, you'll need to solve a lot of other things, too.

Here's everything you need to know to solve the cuckoo clock puzzle in Inscryption. For more about the game, check out our Inscryption beginner's guide, and our guides for opening the safe, solving the sliding puzzles, and freeing the caged wolf.

I Want To Like Riders Republic, But Can't Get Past Everything I Hate

2 years 5 months ago

Riders Republic

We were not given early access to review Riders Republic, Ubisoft's new open-world action sports game. So, while you wait for our full review, here are some thoughts on the game after nearly a dozen hours. We hope to release a formal review sometime next week.

I think the best way to describe Riders Republic is to tell you about its soundtrack. Specifically, two songs prominently featured and played ad nauseam over almost every single race and objective.

The first song is "All I Want" off The Offspring's 1997 album Ixnay on the Hombre. If the name doesn't immediately ring a bell, it's perhaps best known as the song in Crazy Taxi. You know, the "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" song. That one.

The second is a cover of Coolio's landmark 1996 song "Gangsta's Paradise," softly performed by Les Ukulélés Girls, featuring the artist Zita. Replacing the bass and drums of the original, and the almost icy and cold keyboard lead that rests over them, is the light strumming of a ukulele as a woman creates her own melodies, assuring you that she is, in fact, "a loc'd out gangsta, set trippin' banger." Actually, before we continue, I think you need to hear this one yourself. It is truly one of the worst things I have ever heard in my entire life.

November PS Plus Lineup Includes Knockout City And Kingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

2 years 5 months ago

PlayStation has announced the PlayStation Plus lineup for November and it’s one of the largest free games offerings for the service yet.

Six titles are up for grabs this month, three of which are exclusive to VR. Knockout City, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, and First Class Trouble are your "standard" games this month. The Persistence, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, and Until You Fall are what you can expect on PSVR. All of these will be available to add to your library on November 2.

Knockout City was released just this year and it’s coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for free as part of the PS Plus lineup next month. It’s an online multiplayer game where you play dodgeball across multiple maps while using a variety of abilities and powerups to stay alive and take your opponents out. Check out Game Informer’s Knockout City review to find out why we gave it an 8.5 out of 10.

Oculus Quest Being Renamed Meta Quest, Moving Away From Mandatory Facebook Logins

2 years 5 months ago

Despite being perhaps the name most associated with VR gaming, Facebook is retiring the Oculus branding. Alongside Facebook's plans to rename itself Meta, it has announced plans to rename the Oculus line of VR products to align them with the new name for the overall company.

The news was shared in a post by Facebook CTO Andrew Bosworth, who said the shift will begin in early 2022. Oculus Quest will become Meta Quest, while the Oculus App will be renamed the Meta Quest App.

"VR will be the most immersive way for people to access the metaverse and as we look toward our goal of bringing 1B people into VR, we want to make it clear that Quest is a Meta product," he wrote. "For this reason, we're simplifying our brand architecture and shifting away from the Oculus brand."

Bosworth described this as a "very difficult decision to make" given the "strong attachment" to the Oculus brand. "While we're retiring the name, I can assure you that the original Oculus vision remains deeply embedded in how Meta will continue to drive mass adoption for VR today," he said. "We'll also expand Meta Horizon as the brand that will encompass all of our first-party immersive social experiences. You've seen this already with Horizon Workrooms and Horizon Worlds. Soon you'll see us shift from Oculus to Horizon Home, Hori."

The news will come as a puzzling decision to some given the brand recognition of Oculus (not to mention that people will likely continue using the Oculus Quest name regardless). But Facebook/Meta is attempting to make a major pivot to refocus its efforts on establishing a metaverse, however maligned or ill-fated some may believe that concept to be. Dropping the Oculus branding is just one part of a wider initiative to embrace the new Meta name.

CoD: Vanguard Patch Notes Reveal Improvements From Beta And New Perk

2 years 5 months ago

Call of Duty: Vanguard launches on November 5, but developer Sledgehammer Games has already revealed patch notes with the latest changes from the beta. Players can expect the launch version of Vanguard to arrive with improved audio, smoother gameplay, and even a new perk.

Sledgehammer Games says the goal for Vanguard's beta "was to give players a faster and smoother gameplay experience at launch." To achieve this, the developer reduced weapon swap/pickup animation speeds and increased and re-balanced the sprint out times.

Additionally, a new perk is being added to Vanguard at launch, with the classic Ninja perk that provides players with silent footsteps at all times. Ninja wouldn't have been a popular perk in the beta, as the footstep audio was very faint, but Sledgehammer Games describes "big changes" have been made to Vanguard's audio mix, including increased footstep sounds, reduced announcer frequency, and more.

The patch notes also address some of the visual concerns from the beta, including the distortion effects being removed from the muzzle flash, and a reduction of smoke that's emitted when firing a weapon. The overly bright lens flare was also reduced.

Players can also expect improvements to the performance of Vanguard across all platforms. Vanguard's alpha and betas were a rough experience for some players on older consoles like the PlayStation 4. These performance improvements include fixed glitches resulting in pixelation, lighting issues, and graphical corruption during the beta.

The Mandalorian Director Is Teaming With Fortnite To Produce Shorts Featuring Universal Classic Monsters

2 years 5 months ago

Universal Pictures and Epic Games are partnering up together to create an original short-form miniseries called "We Will Be Monsters." The first episode will drop on October 28 inside Fortnite as part of the game's Shortnitemares Festival. It will reimagine the Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula.

"We Will Be Monsters" takes Universal's iconic characters from works like the Bride of Frankenstein and The Mummy and adapts them to modern times. The original Universal monster movies were focused on European origins, but now this new miniseries will go global and feature locations such as Hong Kong, Morocco, Los Angeles, and Lagos.

“This is another manifestation of our monsters, and they have never been depicted this diverse,” says Abhijay Parkash, the president of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

Furthermore, Rick Famuyiwa will direct the Universal Monsters x Fortnite miniseries. Famuyiwa has directed several episodes of The Mandalorian and was chosen because of his involvement with working within high-tech, virtual sets as well as his own unique interpretations of the Universal Monsters characters.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, after the drop of the initial episode, Fortnite players will be able to buy the skins of these characters and use them in the game. The first skin available will be the Bride of Frankenstein one, with episodes two through four planned to be released sometime early in 2022.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas In Development For Oculus Quest 2

2 years 5 months ago

Oculus, the virtual reality company owned by Facebook, has revealed that it is currently working on bringing the classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to its Quest 2 device.

This news comes by way of Facebook’s identity-changing livestream today, where the company is expected to announce its new name. During the stream, it was revealed that Oculus is working on a “built-for-VR version” of the famed GTA.

“Today at Connect, we announced that the Rockstar Games classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is in development for Quest 2,” an Oculus blog post reads. “Get a new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas as you experience (again or for the first time) one of gaming’s most iconic open worlds.”

Oculus says this project has been “many years” in the making and that it’s excited to reveal more, but more was not revealed today. There weren’t any screenshots of what the VR perspective in San Andreas might look like, nor were any details shared about whether or not this would be a port of the classic game to VR, a port of the upcoming remaster, or a complete remake.

Age of Empires 4 Is Off To a Strong Start on Steam

2 years 5 months ago

Age of Empires 4 was released to strong critical praise today and it's led to a strong player count on Steam which is certainly off to a great start.

Age of Empires 4 reached a concurrent player count of 54,239 people on Steam as of 10:36 AM PT on Thursday, according to SteamDB. That places it comfortably above Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition's all-time peak player count of 38,725 people.

That of course doesn't count the number of players playing it on Game Pass for PC or through the Microsoft Store, which Microsoft hasn't released info on as of yet.

Compared to other popular Steam titles and Age of Empire 4's 54,000 players are still pretty impressive. Relic's new strategy game is currently beating Rainbow Six Siege's current player count of 46,000 and Rocket League's 45,000. Next highest on SteamDB's player count chart is Korean MMO MIR4, Rust, Dead by Daylight, and Grand Theft Auto 5.

As of 10:45 AM PT, Age of Empires 4 is the 12th most-played game on Steam. Not bad for one of the best RTS franchises on PC, and one that only just released today. Microsoft certainly laid the groundwork by releasing "Definitive Edition" HD remasters of all three Age of Empires games over the past three years.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Is Already Ubisoft’s Second Biggest Game Of All Time

2 years 5 months ago

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has made Ubisoft a lot of money.

That’s because it’s the publisher’s “[second] largest profit-generating game” in its entire history, and it achieved that title in less than 12 months. Curious as to what Ubisoft’s biggest game of all time is? So are we, but Ubisoft doesn’t mention who wears that crown in its First-Half 2021-22 Fiscal Earnings Report released today.

“Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has been outperforming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey across the board since its release,” the fiscal report reads. “This quarter, the Siege of Paris expansion, whose creation was led by the amazing team at Ubisoft Singapore, delivered record engagement.
