2 years 1 month ago

Developer Witch Beam's "zen" puzzler Unpacking - which, you may recall, was named Eurogamer's Game of the Year in 2021 - will be making its way to PlayStation 4 and PS5 "soon".

Unpacking initially burst out of its box toward the end of last year, giving PC, Switch, and Xbox players the opportunity to experience significant moments in the life of its protagonist, as relayed entirely through the act of pulling her current possessions out of boxes and packing them away into a new living space each time.

PlayStation CEO Says First-Party Games Will Not Launch Day One On Revamped PS Plus

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan PlayStation Plus First Party Games

Developer: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Following Sony’s unveiling of its heavily-rumored PlayStation Plus revamp, which combines the features of Plus and those of PlayStation Now into three different tiers, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan revealed that players should not expect first-party games to launch on the service.

Seemingly alluding to the fact that Xbox Game Studios titles launch day-one on Xbox Game Pass, Ryan said if PlayStation were to do this, it would break the company’s “virtuous” release cycle. This news comes by way of a new interview with Ryan over at GamesIndustry.biz, who spoke to the CEO about today’s PS Plus news.

“We feel like we are in a good virtuous cycle with the studios where the investment delivers success, which enables yet more investment, which delivers yet more success,” Ryan told GamesIndustry.biz. “We like that cycle and we think our gamers like that cycle.

Bandai Namco Reveals New Gundam Metaverse Details

2 years 1 month ago

Gundam Metaverse

While the The Witch from Mercury anime appeared, another other major component of the 3rd Gundam Conference event was the Gundam Metaverse. As announced in February 2022, Bandai Namco is moving forward with its plans to create an IP metaverse, starting with the brand. Based on a presentation and press release, Bandai Namco intends for it to become a "platform of opportunities" for fans worldwide to connect with each other.

The first step in the making of the metaverse is the creation of "virtual communities" for each "category" of Gundam engagement. These include things like Gunpla (Gundam plastic model kits), video games, anime productions, and music. Each will be linked by the existing Bandai Namco ID system.

Gundam Metaverse

Then, virtual spaces will be constructed. These will be modeled after Gundam's signature space colonies. Each will link to the Gundam Metaverse hub. Collectively, this cluster of colonies will be called Side-G. How these virtual colonies will be accessed by users was not specified. Bandai Namco promised that the virtual spaces would be linked somehow to the real world.

What do you think of the new PlayStation Plus, and is it better than Xbox Game Pass?

2 years 1 month ago

After months of rumours, Sony have finally unveiled their answer to Xbox Game Pass today. Starting this June, their new subscription service will unite PlayStation Plus and their cloud streaming platform PlayStation Now under one roof, offering three different tiers of membership. Most of it isn't that relevant to us on PC, but the final, most expensive tier, PlayStation Plus Premium, will include that aforementioned cloud streaming to PC, letting us play hundreds of PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PSP games without having to own an actual PlayStation.

It's not yet clear how that library of games will differ from the current PlayStation Now library, but one thing is certain: this is a move that definitely benefits people with a PlayStation and a PC more than it does standalone PC peeps. And yet, even as someone who falls into the former camp of PlayStation and PC owners, I'm still not sure this new PS+ is something I actually want. Sure, there's that massive retro collection on offer, but no Day One games I can either play on my console or stream to PC? On your bike, Sony. Personally, I see this as more of a dip-in and dip-out kinda deal to indulge my occasional retro cravings, but I'm keen to know what you, RPS readers, think of this new PS Plus offering as well. Does it appeal in any shape or form? And how does it compare to Game Pass for you? Let's chat about it below.

April's Xbox Games With Gold include Hue, Another Sight, and MX vs ATV Alive

2 years 1 month ago

With April inching ever closer, Microsoft has hoisted its Games With Gold sack once more, upending it to reveal a fresh selection of titles being made available as part of Xbox Live Gold (and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) subscriptions next month, which this time look an awful lot like Hue, Another Sight, Outpost Kaloki X, and MX vs ATV Alive.

Hue, if you're unfamiliar, is puzzle adventure that sees players wandering a grey world and using their colour-based powers to push ever forward. Puzzles are largely built around the ability to change the background colour of the world, either causing previously invisible objects to be made visible or to colour-match obstacles so they disappear. Developer Fiddlesticks Games expands on that premise to deliver an experience that's as sweet as it is clever - and Xbox Live Gold subscribers can grab it as part of Games With Gold from 16th April to 15th May.

As for Another Sight, it's a "surreal fantasy adventure" with another distinctive mechanic at its core. Here, players take on the role of a partially sighted girl named Kit and her cat Hodge, flipping between the two and using their respective abilities to solve puzzles and progress - Hodge being smaller, more agile and able to view much more of the environment on-screen, and Kit being more attuned to noises around her and able to manipulate larger objects. It's available on Games With Gold from 1st-30th April.

Xbox Games With Gold for April 2022 Revealed

2 years 1 month ago

Microsoft has announced that March 2022's Games with Gold are Another Sight, Hue, Outpost Kaloki X, and MX vs ATV Alive.

As revealed on Xbox Wire, the four Games with Gold will be available to anyone with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with Another Sight and Outpost Kaloki X available on April 1.

Another Sight is a side-scrolling fantasy adventure where players take control of a girl and her cat in a journey beyond reality. It was released in 2019 and takes around five or six hours to complete.

Also available on April 1, but only until April 15, is Outpost Kaloki X, a light-hearted space-station tycoon game with ridiculous characters and stories that released almost two decades ago in 2004.

In our 7/10 review, IGN said it's "an entertaining and surprisingly deep experience. For anyone looking for a quirky, unique experience, it's worth it to shell out to drop this onto your hard drive."

Available later in the month on April 16 is Hue, another game which concludes after around six hours. This 2016 platformer has players change the colour of the environment to solve puzzles, reveal hidden objects, and phase out obstructions.

Capcom Showed Off 2 Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Armor Sets

New monsters means new armor sets and weapons in Monster Hunter games, and Capcom offered a look at two new ones that will appear in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak. The suits involve items gathered from the Garangolm and Lunagaron. In each case, every character’s set appears.

First, here is the Garangolm Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak armor set. It begins with a look at the male hunter outfit, before moving on to the female hunter. The Palamute armor makes one look like a horse. As for the Palico, its set of armor resembles a golem.

Next is the Lunagaron sets. Once again, it starts with the hunters before moving on to the Palamute and Palico. These armor sets tend to have parts on the head that resemble ears and tails.

Playing Crusader Kings 3 on console: a bit unwieldy but it works

2 years 1 month ago

I'm trying to unite Ireland. It's 1066. Harold is about to get shot in the eye over in England - I know that because of history - so I've snuck in early and befriended him, and arranged for my daughter to marry one of his sons when she comes of age. Icky, I know, but when the French later decide to help my Irish neighbour in a war against me, and turn up in their thousands, I'm able to call on the English to fight them off. Step by step, I'm getting there.

This is Crusader Kings 3, and I've wanted to play Crusader Kings 3 for a long time. I've tried playing on PC before but bounced off it. Why it's taken until the console release to try again, I don't know, but here I am. And now the question is whether, on console, it works. The answer? Sort of.

It's a port with some adaptation; it's not a complete rethink for consoles. The game you might already know has been squeezed onto a gamepad and slightly enlarged for TV, and though it never quite feels natural, it works well enough to play.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Fans Already Have Theories About That Broken Master Sword

2 years 1 month ago

Nintendo announced today that it would be delaying the long-awaited Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel to Spring 2023, but a brief bit of footage included in the announcement has led to fans across the internet coming together with a common question – what's going on with the Master Sword? Some of them already have intriguing theories.

Today's footage shows Link holding what appears to be a destroyed (melted? Corrupted?) Master Sword near an orb of light, leading many fans to wonder if his quest (or part of it) could end up revolving around reforging the series' classic weapon.

Reddit users Zeldatroid and Capable_Afternoon687 even speculate that a journey to reforge the sword could ultimately be leading up to a final showdown with Ganon to see him defeated once and for all, opening the way for future games to include fresh villains.

More concerning is the question of what could've possibly caused such damage to the series’ all-powerful sword. Malice – a corrupted sentient goo found around Hyrule in Breath of the Wild – reaches out and grabs Link's arm in a previous trailer, which could explain why the character appears to feature an arm cover or prosthesis of sorts in the new footage. It's possible, then, that this attack on Link led to the destruction of the Master Sword as well.

Sega of America & General Mills Celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie with Cereal & Fruit Snacks

2 years 1 month ago

Earlier today in a press release from Sega of America, it was announced that the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog will be teaming up with Minneapolis-based food producer, General Mills. The deal will see special-edition lines of fruit snacks and breakfast cereal hitting store shelves just in time for the release of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie.

The cereal appears to have golden-colored rings that are made to look like the rings that you collect in the many Sonic the Hedgehog games. And sprinkled throughout are marshmallows that resemble Chaos Emeralds as well as a featureless front outline of Sonic’s head which Sega of America has dubbed “Spin Dash” marshmallows.

As for the fruit snacks, much less information was revealed. All we know is that they will come, “…in a variety of shapes and flavors.”

Katie Wong, head of Ideas & Partnerships for General Mills talked about these products bringing together Sonic the Hedgehog fans of all ages together:

Our goal is to create holistic brand experiences for our consumers, and we’re so excited to be able to join SEGA to extend the ways that families can engage with the beloved Sonic the Hedgehog this spring. By bringing Sonic into the cereal and fruit snacks aisles, we’re able to bring together favorites of both kids and parents, alike.

Additionally, Senior Manager of Licensing at SEGA of America, Michael Cisneros, commented on his excitement for the partnership:

General Mills is one of the foremost brands in the food industry — especially when it comes to youth-focused products, so we’re thrilled to partner up with them. This partnership is a really fun and creative way to integrate some iconic aspects of the Sonic games into a whole new product line, and we’re excited to introduce it to Sonic fans.

Sony's response to Game Pass is both confident and conservative

2 years 1 month ago

The good news, for those who like their games industry a little less homogenous, is that Sony continues to tread its own line with the much-anticipated makeover of its PlayStation subscription service. The new PlayStation Plus might look broadly similar to Game Pass, and at its top tier it costs broadly the same too, but with Sony's first-party games not hitting the service on day one this is quite pointedly not a direct competitor. It is instead simply a consolidation of what's gone before.

All of which makes the reveal, heavily rumoured and highly billed by some insiders for months beforehand, feel somewhat underwhelming. The new PlayStation Plus is not a game changer. It's not about lowering the barrier of entry, aggressive user acquisition or expanding the market beyond its current boundaries; it's merely a bundle, and further affirmation that Sony firmly believes in its time-honoured model of big-ticket, triple-A games with a £70 price tag for its fancy £500 machine.

Over 8,000 Genshin Impact Players Decided to Walk to Inazuma

Over 8,000 Genshin Impact Players Decided to Walk to Inazuma

MiHoYo used to regularly release Teyvat Times updates that shared data collected on various feats players completed in Genshin Impact. On March 29, 2022, it decided to bring the newsletter back. Its first entry went over details about the Serenitea Pot and its furnishings, unorthodox ways to get to Inazuma, and drawing fortunes at the Grand Narukami Shrine. Most notably, it revealed that 8,793 Genshin Impact players ended up deciding to walk from Liyue Harbor to Inazuma City, rather than teleport or take a boat.

When talking about the accomplishment, miHoYo clarified how these people managed the feat. It noted that the Genshin Impact players who made the walk to Inazuma did so after getting there via Beidou’s boat. This is because otherwise, the Raiden Shogun’s thunderstorm barrier could electrocute people attempting unorthodox travel methods.

The announcement also offered details about sneaking into Inazuma in Genshin Impact in February and March 2022. In February 2022, 45,961 people tried to sneak in. Of those, it noted 31,399 failed. 17,998 were electrocuted and 13,401 drowned. In March 2022, 12,420 people drowned trying to swim to Inazuma so far.

Eastward Is Getting a Vinyl Release & Physical Collector’s Edition for Switch, Comes With a Beautiful Tabletop Game

2 years 1 month ago

Developed by Pixpil and published by Chucklefish, Eastward was one of the most charming indie hits we got to play last year. The game features a really beautiful retro 2D pixel aesthetic, Zelda-like action gameplay, and a moving story about a girl who wants to know the truth about the surface world and what really happened to Earth that drove humanity to live underground.

It was definitely a success at launch, and iam8bit and Skybound are working to release a physical retail version of the game this year.

The game will be getting a Collector’s Edition for Switch, which comes with an original tabletop game and a lovely cover sheet. Here’s how the game works:

“The cooperative tabletop game has 2-4 players working together to rescue villagers and defeat enemies, racing against a sinister miasma that threatens to engulf the world — complete with a foldout game board, 15 food cards, 10 item cards, eight Miasma cards, and four unique playable character standees.”
