In a busy not-E3 week, was Summer Game Fest worth watching?

1 year 10 months ago

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast - now also available in audio form! - we're digesting last night's big Summer Game Fest show, and the start of this year's not-E3 few weeks. How's it all been so far? Well, the PlayStation State of Play was pretty good, actually.

As for Geoff Keighley's show last night, well... there were plenty of announcements in last night's showcase, though few genuine surprises. Here we share our favourites, rate the night overall, and provide our best impressions of the Clickers from The Last of Us. Joining me, as ever, are Eurogamer news reporters Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy.

Of course, this year has seen the traditional E3 model splintered further - and we're still to see two platform holders take their turn in the spotlight. We'll be back next week to break down the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, plus perhaps even a Nintendo Direct. Thanks for watching, and have a lovely weekend!

How to Watch Dragon Ball in Order

1 year 10 months ago

Over the years, the Dragon Ball series has evolved from a supernatural martial arts anime to a show about multiversal aliens battling gods with the fate of the universe on the line. Due to this progression, it makes sense that things can get a little confusing when it comes to the series’ order of operations, even when we are just dealing with the first series. Don’t worry, though, as we’ve got everything you need to know about how to watch Dragon Ball in order right here.

All Dragon Ball Episodes & Seasons in Order

Son Goku’s Boyhood Group

  1. Emperor Pilaf Saga (Ep. 1-13)
    • Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies (alternate plot)
  2. Tournament Saga (Ep. 14-28)
    • Movie 2: Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle (extended plot)

Red Ribbon Army Group

  1. Red Ribbon Army Saga (Ep. 29-45)
    • Movie 4: The Path to Power (altered re-telling of the plot)
  2. General Blue Saga (Ep. 46-57)
  3. Commander Red Saga (Ep. 58-67)
  4. Fortuneteller Baba Saga (Ep. 68-83)

Piccolo Group

  1. Tien Shinhan Saga (Ep. 84-101)
    • Movie 3: Mystical Adventure (alternate plot)
  2. King Piccolo Saga (Ep. 102-122)
  3. Piccolo Jr. Saga (Ep. 123-153)

For the most part, Dragon Ball has a pretty straightforward watch order. The only thing that might confuse people is where the movies fall in line with everything. As you can see above, most of the films are either an alternate version of what happened within the saga it is listed under or an altered re-telling of the plot.

Steam Deck vs Xbox Series S - how future-proof is the Valve handheld?

1 year 10 months ago

Valve's Steam Deck is a seriously impressive piece of it, thanks in no small part to the power-efficient, highly capable AMD Van Gogh APU that runs the show. As we've already seen, this portable PC can match the PlayStation 4 experience at lower resolutions, while its support for ray tracing in combination with its built-in SSD stands it in good stead for future games. However, with demanding software on the horizon and last-gen systems finally starting to fall by the wayside, Microsoft's Xbox Series S is establishing itself as the baseline for modern gaming. So here's the question: can we push the Steam Deck to produce a viable portable alternative to the Series S experience - even on the most demanding games?

Looking at the specs, the two systems don't look quite as far apart as you may think. Both machines are based around the same AMD technologies - Zen 2 CPUs paired with RDNA 2 GPUs. The Steam Deck is substantially pared-back relative to its stronger console cousin, but critically it is targeting a much lower output resolution. The Series S is typically aiming for pixel counts in the 1080p to 1440p range, while the Steam Deck is limited to just 1280x800 on its internal display, or 720p with 40-pixel black bars top and bottom.

Summer Game Fest suggests it's monsters in space time, and I'm all for it

1 year 10 months ago

One time in the office (so, a hundred years ago) a hypothetical was posed: if you were given the chance to go to the moon, with a guarantee that nothing would go wrong, would you take it? "No," I said. "No way. Not a chance. I wouldn't like it." People were shocked at my refusal. "But nothing will go wrong!" they exclaimed. This misses the universal truth that even - and indeed, especially - when it is guaranteed nothing will go wrong, something will always go wrong in space.

Honestly, who can say that they've played a video game set on a space station and not encountered at least one deserted corridor plunged into darkness, but with one spotlight tipped over onto its side to cast ominous shadows? Raise your hands. Terror in space has never gone out of fashion, really, but the source of the terror does seem to go in cycles. In the 2010s a lot of the danger came from an AI gone a bit sinister and funny. As we saw at last night's Summer Game Fest, though, the monsters are back, baby.

Jean Pierre’s Stand is Silver Chariot. It wears armor and wields a rapier. Its specialty is close-range attacks, which people can see in the trailer. How To Do a Perfect Shot in Mario Strikers Battle League

1 year 10 months ago

In Mario Strikers Battle League, winning the game, much like in its real-life counterpart, is all about timing and precision. As such, making sure you get your timing down when shooting is a key part of dominating the pitch. Here is everything you need to know about how to do a perfect shot in Mario Strikers Battle League.

Perfect Shot in Mario Strikers Battle League

When you’re in possession of the ball, you’ll have two different ways of executing a perfect shot in Mario Strikers Battle League. The first requires you to have the ball at your feet already.

When you have it, hold A to charge a shot, then release the button once the red circle under the player is full. You’ll know it’s full once you see a blue circle flash around the player. If you wait too long after the circle fills, then it’ll just do a regular charged shot.

The second occurs when you receive the ball from a pass. This is a one-touch combo shot.

How to Execute a Combo Shot

For a combo shot in Mario Strikers Battle League, you’ll need to time your shot perfectly. When the ball arrives at your player’s feet after the pass, press A to shoot as soon as it touches their foot. This will take some time to get used to but will make for a deadly one-timed shot when done in the right scenarios.

And that just about does it for everything you need to know about how to do a perfect shot in Mario Strikers Battle League. If you’re still on the hunt for more info about the game, be sure to check out the rest of Twinfinite to see the rest of our guides, which have plenty of tips, tricks, and FAQs.

God of War: Ragnarok Seemingly Planned for Release in November

1 year 10 months ago

God of War: Ragnarok is seemingly planned for a November release, after rumors of a delay to 2023.

Bloomberg reports that the long-awaited sequel will see a formal release date announcement this month, with a planned November date. IGN has also heard about a planned November release from sources with inside knowledge.

The Bloomberg report also says that the game was originally planned for release in September but subsequently pushed to November – and IGN has also heard this information. That original September slot is seemingly now filled by the Last of Us Part 1 remake announced yesterday.

After being announced for a 2021 release, the return of Kratos and Atreus was eventually delayed into 2022 (apparently because of surgery undergone by lead voice actor Christopher Judge). However, a long period of silence around the game led to rumors that it had been delayed once more – despite the game receiving a South Korean rating, which often signals a game due for release soon.

Riot’s Valorant Chamber Nerf Is Effective at the Pro Level But Useless in Ranked

1 year 10 months ago

Chamber has proven incredibly popular since joining Valorant’s roster last year. Unlike many other Agents in the game, his utility is unique in that it is almost exclusively designed around pure gunplay. This is especially unusual given that he’s actually intended to fill the defensive, sentinel role. Where other trap-heavy Agents such as Killjoy and Cypher use utility to lock down sites, Chamber is envisioned as a sentinel who holds space by out-aiming his opponents.

It’s actually a very interesting concept and one that certainly works well in practice. So much so, in fact, that Chamber’s pick rate has been through the roof across both professional and ranked play.

In pro esports games, his utility is considered highly valuable not just because of its offensive firepower but its passive econ boost — when everyone else is saving, Chamber can prove a difference-maker with his Headhunter and Tour de Force, and then he has access to a huge pool of money for the next round given that he spent virtually nothing in the previous.

In ranked, well… players love tapping heads, which is Chamber’s specialty — especially when they’re free of any obligation to use utility to help their teammates as other Agents are.

The net result is that every other sentinel in the game had up until recently seen less use in professional play, while in ranked Chamber had (and still is) become a sort of go-to pick for ego-peeking ranked demons.

XCOM Director Says the Series Will Return

1 year 10 months ago

XCOM director Jake Solomon has confirmed the turn-based tactical series will definitely make a return.

Speaking to VGC, Solomon said that XCOM will continue as long as he and the studio are around to make it. "As long as I live, as long as [developer] Firaxis lives, XCOM is... I won't even say sleeping," he said. "I will say XCOM is definitely not dead."

The latest game in the series, XCOM: Chimera Squad, was released in 2020, but the studio has since switched to working on Marvel's Midnight Suns. This new game was announced in August last year and follows a similar formula to the XCOM games, though obviously set in the Marvel universe and featuring the likes of Iron Man, Wolverine, and Spider-Man.

XCOM games have otherwise been released fairly regular since the series was relaunched in 2012 with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but Solomon's confirmation is a good confirmation that this will continue even as the studio explores these other projects.

In our 7/10 review of the previous game, IGN said: "XCOM: Chimera Squad plays with some interesting new ideas, but doesn't bring them together into a particularly graceful whole."

How to Use Essence Transfer in Diablo Immortal

1 year 10 months ago

One of the many cool things you can do in Diablo Immortal is Essence Transfer, which basically lets players transfer or inherit essence between your legendary gear. The game features some great gear, equipment and weapons and not everything you find might go with your class. This is where Essence Transfer in Diablo Immortal comes into play. If you aren’t sure how this works or if you’re looking for tips, here’s how to use essence transfer in Diablo Immortal.

What Is Essence Transfer in Diablo Immortal?

You will come across normal (white), magic (blue), rare (yellow), and legendary (orange) gear in Diablo Immortal, with legendary items being the most powerful. Every legendary item in the game has a unique attribute or ability known as an essence. With essence transfer, you can transfer the essence of weapon A to weapon B.

There’s a great possibility that legendary items you find in the game might not match your class or build. Every weapon has certain stats or abilities that you might want and essence transfer lets you do just that.

How to Unlock Essence Transfer

To unlock essence transfer, you will first need to get two pieces of legendary gear of the same type. You can obtain legendaries either by grinding mobs, running dungeons, rifts, etc. Most players will get legendaries by simply playing through the main game.

Apex Legends Mobile review - battle royale sticks the landing on phones

1 year 10 months ago

You know the feeling, right? It's like when the US makes a facsimile of your favourite UK show, or your most cherished childhood book gets the Hollywood treatment. You're excited, because getting more of something you love can never be a bad thing. But you're nervous, too, because the reason why you love it may be different to the reason others do. I get that same sense of uneasy delight each time I find out a game I love gets a port or a remaster. I'm at once both giddy and a touch apprehensive, and I've learned - mostly the hard way - to hold my giddiness firmly in check when a favourite franchise gets the mobile treatment.

In Respawn's defence, Apex Legends Mobile isn't a port. Built from the ground up for mobile, Respawn takes all I love about its irrepressible battle royale - its striking style, excellent sound design, fabulous cast, and delightful gunplay - and wraps it up in flashy new threads designed specifically for mobile devices. Not all of it lands - particularly its cluttered UI and complex progression and currency systems; more on those later - but there's a lot to enjoy here, even if you're new to playing shooters on mobile.

For those unfamiliar with Apex Legends, it's an enjoyable twist on the team-based battle royale formula, offering the usual scramble for weapons, a shrinking ring, and battle to the death, albeit with a charming roster of characters - Legends - that each sport their own special abilities. The majority of them are well-balanced and bring something different to the battlefield, depending upon your comfort zone and gunplay preferences.

Mario Strikers Battle League: How to Aim Shots

1 year 10 months ago

Wondering how to aim shots in Mario Strikers Battle League? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’ll clue you in on how to aim your shots at goal to help give you a leg over the competition. So, without further ado, let’s dive in, shall we?

How to Aim Shots in Mario Strikers Battle League

To aim your shots in Nintendo’s latest 5v5 arcade soccer title, you’ll need to use the left control stick while shooting (A button). When charging up the shot with the A button, the ball will automatically shoot when you release the button.

Here’s the kicker, though: Aiming towards the goal will keep shots lower to the ground, while aiming away from the goal will make your shot go higher up.

Of course, make sure that when you shoot, you’re not on your side of the pitch, as it’ll pretty much always end up in the opposition’s possession. On the other hand, if you shoot in your opponent’s half, your character will automatically shoot at your opponent’s goal no matter which way they were facing before the shot.

It’s worth noting that some characters naturally have higher Technique, so they’ll usually have better accuracy as a result.

So, there you have it. We hope this helped to clue you in on how to aim shots in Mario Strikers Battle League. If you’re on the lookout for more tips for the game, we have plenty of guides, including how to nail a hyper shot, as well as how to unlock Galactic Mode.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink Delayed to 2023

1 year 10 months ago

granblue fantasy relink delay

The Twitter account for Granblue Fantasy: Relink announced that the game will be delayed until 2023. Developer Yuito Kimura posted an apology notice, as well as an explanation for the delay, on the game’s official website.  Additionally, Cygames was to release new information on the game in June 2022, but it will now do so in December 2022 instead.

According to the notice, the reason behind the Granblue Fantasy: Relink delay is to polish up the gameplay. Kimura also states that the novel coronavirus pushed back the schedule and is the main reason behind the delay. In terms of how much progress there is, the game’s primary assets (such as audio, music, and main story set pieces) are complete. The team’s remaining tasks include debugging and improving the graphics and gameplay experience.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink will be a console action-RPG spin-off of Granblue Fantasy. In late 2021, Cygames released a teaser trailer for it, which showed off how the gameplay and cutscenes will look. You will be able to play as main characters such as Rackam and Katalina. In addition, since the game shows both Gran and Djeeta, it is likely that you will be able to choose the gender of the player avatar.

June's Pokémon Go Community Day features a way to extend the day if players work together

This month's Pokémon Go Community Day is going to be an interesting one - and not least due to its choice of featured creature, the pseudo-Legendary Deino.

As well as the monthly event's typical in-game bonuses and good chances at catching a Deino's Shiny version, developer Niantic is also using the event to roll-out a couple of brand new features.

In a twist, players will be able to extend the event's three-hour runtime in their local area by raiding at gyms after the 11am-2pm window concludes. The raids will feature Deino's evolved form Zweilous, and hatch from a new type of raid egg that can only be tackled by players in person (so, no remote raid passes!).

Final Fantasy 7 Is Getting a 25th Anniversary Stream Next Week

1 year 10 months ago

Square Enix is hosting Final Fantasy 7 stream next week in celebration of the game's 25th anniversary – and many fans will be hoping to see a glimpse of Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Part 2.

Streaming on the publisher's YouTube and Twitch channels, the stream will take place on June 16 at 3pm Pacific / 6pm Eastern / 11pm UK (so June 17 at 9am AEDT).

It's unclear what Square Enix will announce during the ten minute stream but it promised fans "a first look at all the information surrounding the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7".

While fans' may be hoping for some news regarding the long-awaited Remake: Part 2, it's worth noting that Square Enix has several ongoing spin-offs of the classic PlayStation RPG, and could just be announcing new information regarding those. Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura said last month that Square Enix would be announcing "various things" during an anniversary event but, again, didn't go into further details.
