Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season One Update Adds New Maps, Modes, and More

3 years 5 months ago

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War entered its first season of new content with an update adding more maps, modes, and weapons.

The Season One update added several new maps across its multiplayer modes. The 6v6 modes will receive 1980’s New Jersey mall The Pines, Raid from Black Ops II, and a holiday variant of Nuketown ’84.

Attack on Titan S4 Is off To an Unexpected Yet Brilliant Start

3 years 5 months ago

Warning! We will be diving into heavy spoilers for Attack on Titan. These spoilers include up to and through the current season.

If you haven’t seen up to Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 2 and want to avoid spoilers, come back when you catch up. If you have, or you simply don’t mind spoilers, then keep on reading.

It has been two weeks since the debut of the final season of Attack on Titan, and the protagonists have yet to see any screentime. Instead of characters like Eren and Levi, the action so far is devoted to their enemy: the Marleyans and the Eldian Warriors and Warrior candidates they control.

On the surface, this may seem like a bad idea. Not only have we been trained to hate the “bad guys” of the series as a whole, but fleshing out an entirely new area and multiple new POV characters in the last season could make things feel rushed.

When it comes down to it, though, the progression feels right. Ever since Marley was revealed near season 3’s climax, fans have been dying to know more about the world outside of Paradis Island.

Everything has been building to the mysteries outside the walls, so developing Marely and its Eldians makes sense. It also makes the coming conflict that much more tragic.

Instead of merely enemies that we want the “good guys” to destroy, we can see that the antagonists simply live their lives according to their society and its structure. It shows that there aren’t any clear-cut good or bad guys in this war, just varying perspectives.

Tales of Arise Aims For the World But Won’t Neglect Japanese Fans According to Producer

3 years 5 months ago

Today’s issue of Weekly Famitsu included an interview with Tales of Arise producer Yusuke Tomizawa, who offered more color on the game following the news from yesterday.

Tomizawa-san mentioned that the team is preparing to deliver more news in the near future and development is finally coming close to the final stage after recovering from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Quality is being improved at a steady pace and the aim is to have a game that can be appreciated worldwide. Yet, that doesn’t mean that Japanese fans will be neglected. As JRPG developers, Bandai Namco continues to develop games that they can be proud of both in Japan and worldwide.

He also mentioned that a lot is being organized to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, even if he can’t reveal more for now. Yet, the second half of the anniversary year will be very exciting for the fans. He intends to continue pushing to grow the brand and start looking ahead to the next five years toward the 30th anniversary.

Tales of Arise was originally slated for 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but it was delayed due to the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Among Us Has Already Hit the Top of the Switch eShop Charts After Just One Day of Being Released

3 years 5 months ago

During a Nintendo Indie World livestreamed presentation yesterday, there were several exciting announcements unveiled, but the final “one more thing” reveal definitely stole the show. Indie developer InnerSloth announced that its multiplayer social deduction title, Among Us, would be launching on the Nintendo Switch eShop, marking the first time that the game has come to a console.

And fans of the game didn’t even have to wait to play it, as Among Us launched shortly after the Indie World showcase, available for everyone to purchase for $5, the same price as its PC version on Steam.

It’s been about 24 hours since the game released digitally on Nintendo’s storefront and it has already hit the number one spot in the Best Sellers section, which is no surprise considering just how massively popular Among Us is right now.

Just this past September, the game managed to reach over 85 million downloads, and that was only for the mobile version of the game on iOS and Android devices, which is free of charge by the way.

Currently, at the time of writing, Among Us has over 80,000 viewers on Twitch, following Twitch juggernauts such as League of Legends and Dota 2.

Due to the Switch port supporting cross-play with PC and mobile players, there’s no doubt that Among Us will continue to grow and become an even more popular indie game.

Microsoft Flight Simulator – Seoul City Wow Add-On Review (SamScene3D)

3 years 5 months ago

Recently, Microsoft Flight Simulator add-on developer SamScene3D released the “Seoul City Wow” package featuring the capital of South Korea.

The Asian country is one of the major nations included Microsoft Flight Simulator that has received the least attention from add-on creators, including freeware.

On top of that, the default local scenery in the base simulator is far from stellar, making the Republic of Korea look a lot more boring than it actually is.

Funnily enough, I was able to find more (freeware) add-ons portraying secretive North Korea than the whopping zero I found enriching its southern counterpart.

One of the reasons behind this issue is that South Korea’s political situation dictates part of its legislation, including some really strict regulations about maps. This is the reason why no Google Maps 3D view exists of Seoul, despite the fact that it’s a massively-relevant capital city home to almost ten million people.

Star Wars Fans Are Using Baby Yoda as a Christmas Tree Topper

3 years 5 months ago

Happy holidays, everyone! Can you actually believe that Christmas is already next week? And that 2021 is right around the corner? I sure don’t. But many people have started decorating their homes with their Christmas trees, and it turns out that Grogu, aka The Child, aka Baby Yoda, has been replacing angels and stars as the number one choice for tree toppers and it’s quite wonderful and wholesome.

Thanks to the ever-growing popularity of the character from Star Wars: The Mandalorian series on Disney+, Baby Yoda is taking the world by storm in a way that we could not even imagine.

Nick Taylor on Twitter has even gone out of the way to somehow place a floating ornament in this image below to make it seem like Grogu is using his force powers to lift it. Is it a string? Is it magic? Who knows!

Bethesda Announces Doom Zero; Add-on for Doom (1993) and Doom II

3 years 5 months ago

The recent re-releases of Doom (1993) and Doom II are receiving a new add-on today in the form of Doom Zero, Bethesda announced today. Doom Zero adds a bulk of new content to the game including new paths, enemies, bosses, sounds and more across 32 levels.

Bethesda provided a brief rundown of the add-on on their official blog post.

“Don’t let the name fool you: This ain’t no ‘lite,’ low-calorie version of DOOM. Made in celebration of DOOM II’s 25th anniversary, DOOM Zero contains a whopping 32 levels filled with new enemies, new bosses, new sounds, new music and new sprites.

Despite being faithful to ‘vanilla’ DOOM’s classic gameplay, DOOM Zero still brings its own original ideas to the old-school formula, from branching paths to challenges that’ll get even seasoned Slayers putting on their thinking caps.”

Doom has seen a slew of new re-releases over the past year since the classic trilogy was released on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch last summer. This past March, to coincide with the release of Doom Eternal, Bethesda brought out the long neglected Doom 64.

Doom Zero is available now for owners of Doom (1993) and Doom II. The download can be accessed right from the main menu.

EA Play on Xbox Game Pass for PC Delayed to 2021

3 years 5 months ago

Microsoft announced today that Electronic Arts’ EA Play service will now be coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC and Ultimate subscribers in 2021.

Microsoft did not give a specific reason for the delay, only that the addition needs “more time.” It was originally scheduled to launch today, Dec. 15 and has now been delayed “until 2021.”

Microsoft and Electronic Arts announced that the EA Play service (formerly EA Access and Origin Access) would be coming to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at no additional cost last September. The catalog appeared for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on consoles with a few titles available for Android last month alongside the launch of the Xbox Series X|S.

While those on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S can simply access and download EA Play games from the consoles’ store, Games Pass for PC and Ultimate subscribers on PC will have to access the games through the EA Desktop app currently in open beta.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate contains Xbox Live Gold, Game Pass for consoles, and Game Pass for PC for $14.99 per month. Microsoft is currently running a discount on the service at $1 for the first three months for new subscribers only.

Latest Diablo 4 Quarterly Update Covers Item Rarity, Stats, Weapon Types, & Respeccing

3 years 5 months ago

Blizzard continues to truck along with development on Diablo 4 and has once again come back with a quarterly update that shares how the work has been going and what they are currently mulling on. This month, the team wanted to discuss their latest thoughts on respeccing, stats, weapon types, and how item rarity will work in Diablo 4 and what changes players should expect.

The post, written by lead game designer of Diablo 4 Joe Shely, first builds on something they spoke about last time: skill trees. While this update isn’t about skill trees again, they did want to share a development on respeccing.

Respeccing

While they do not want to remove the ability to respec in Diablo 4, they don’t want to make it so easy that you can so quickly undo everything you’ve decided on to copy someone else out there. As a result, Diablo 4 will have respeccing but it will have a cost associated with it that will match the effort put into the original effort to build it up to where it is currently.

In other words, a character that is still leveling up will be able to more easily respec than one that has their tree complete.

Primary Stats

Primary stats will be somewhat similar to previous games but with a more nuanced approach as compared to Diablo 3. Players, as they level up, will gain skill points to spend in their primary stats.

Primary stats will work differently for each class. Here’s the example that Shely gave compared Barbarian to the Sorceress.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Can Simulate Even a Solar Eclipse

3 years 5 months ago

Yesterday, part of South America was treated to a solar eclipse, so I decided to try out an experiment in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The game is known for a rather astonishing precision in simulating the world, including the specific dance of the sun, moon, and stars in the sky. Could it actually manage to simulate a solar eclipse?

Turns out that it can. I went to Los Pehuenches Airport in Lebu, Chile, which was one of the best places to see the eclipse yesterday (December 14) at around 4:00 pm GMT.

Clouds actually help block the glare of the sun, providing a nice view of the eclipse, as you can see in the video below. It’s very hard to see with a completely clear sky.

The best thing is that you can see it yourself even if the eclipse is already in the past. All you need to do is to go to the right location, set the correct date and time, and you can see eclipses both in the past and in the future.

That’s certainly a pretty neat and (at least for me) unexpected feature of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Spelunky 1 and 2 Coming to Nintendo Switch Next Summer

3 years 5 months ago

The final Nintendo Indie Showcase of 2020 has just come and gone. Mossmouth’s subterranean platformers Spelunky and Spelunky 2 were the first two games shown off during the live stream, and they’ll both be coming to Nintendo Switch summer 2021.

Spelunky will support local multiplayer, and Spelunky 2 will feature both local and online multiplayer options.

For the unaware, Spelunky 1 and 2 are roguelike platformers that’ll be bringing worlds full of randomized challenges and plenty of treasure hunting to the Switch. And all of it can be done either alone or with friends.

For Spelunky veterans, here are a few of the changes that Mossmouth introduced in the sequel:

  • A Bigger World with all new areas, monsters, traps, and items!
  • An Extra Dimension is added by allowing players to access a second layer behind the normal playfield. The second layer might contain treasure rooms, hidden passages, and other special places.
  • Multiple Routes Through the Game will add variety and give players more ways to personalize a run.
  • Find and Ride Mounts (like turkeys!) that have special abilities. Enemies may ride mounts, as well!
  • New NPCs that you can help, hurt, or ignore… to make each run feel even more like a unique story.
  • Variations and Changes to Classic Spelunky Concepts like shops and ghosts that will make veteran players rethink their strategies.

You can check out this trailer from the Indie World Showcase to see the Nintendo Switch announcement for Spelunky and Spelunky 2:

CDPR Addresses Cyberpunk 2077 Situation; Vows to Earn Back Trust, But Won’t Crunch “Tired” Staff

3 years 5 months ago

Developer CD Projekt Red held a conference call late yesterday to address the shaky launch of its open-world RPG Cyberpunk 2077 on previous console generation hardware. Key members of the studio’s leadership answered pressing questions about why its performance is so dire and what plans are in place to deal with issues moving forward.

The call began with a statement from joint-CEO Adam Kiciński that essentially repeats the same information outlined in CDPR’s apology message to fans earlier this week, but there are two snippets worth highlighting.

First, an admission from the team that it made a critical errors in its launch strategy:

After 3 delays, we as the Management Board were too focused on releasing the game. We underestimated the scale and complexity of the issues, we ignored the signals about the need for additional time to refine the game on the base last-gen consoles. It was the wrong approach and against our business philosophy. On top of that, during the campaign, we showed the game mostly on PCs.

Second, the recognition that CD Projekt Red’s reputation has taken a huge hit from the fallout of Cyberpunk 2077’s launch:

This caused the loss of gamers’ trust and the reputation that we’ve been building through a big part of our lives. That’s why our first steps are solely focused on regaining those two things. We are concentrated on fixing Cyberpunk on last-gen consoles. The first substantial set of fixes was released over the weekend.

10 Classic Cars That Need to Come to Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City

3 years 5 months ago

There are a ton of cars in Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City, a lot of them made by the fictional manufacturers in the game. There’s one car that stands out, though, and that’s Johnny Silverhand’s Porsche 911. That’s right, a real-life car managed to make it into the game, as the former rock star’s beloved pride and joy. But that got us thinking just what other real-life cars would fit right into Night City’s aesthetic and style.

The list takes a number of things into account, but it’s primarily all about that retro-futuristic design, or the ability to finetune and modify the car with plenty of futuristic tech to keep it ticking in 2077. So, without further ado, let’s dive right on in.

Microsoft Flight Simulator – Dublin Airport Add-On Review (MK-Studios)

3 years 5 months ago

Veteran developer MK-Studios just released its rendition of Dublin Airport (EIDW) for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Dublin is the gateway to Ireland, and it’s the perfect base for those who like to fly airliners across almost every continent. We still don’t know if the upcoming World Update dedicated to the UK will actually involve Ireland as well, but this airport is still a good starting point to enjoy the new scenery regardless.

The add-on, priced at $19.51 on Orbx Central, can take advantage of the publisher’s client for ease of installation comparable with Microsoft Flight Simulator’s internal market.

It focuses exclusively on the airport, without additional landmarks or buildings outside of its perimeter. That being said, this is a large international airport, so it brings a lot to the table.

If you want to see what it looks like in extreme detail, you can find a large gallery of screenshots here and enjoy a full flyover video below.

Scarlet Nexus for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, & PC Reveals New Characters with Screenshots

3 years 5 months ago

Today Bandai Namco revealed a new gallery of screenshots and details about the upcoming JRPG Scarlet Nexus.

We get to take another look at the eerie world of the game and at the enemies named Others.

We also take a look at newly revealed characters.

Arashi Spring is a public relations officer and basically the face of the Other Suppression Force. She is a pretty and cheerful girl enthusiastic about her work, and as such she has many fans regardless of gender and age.

That being said, that’s how she acts exclusively in front of a camera. When she’s not on air, she’s lazy and always tries to skip work.

However, her actual abilities are said to be Septentrion-level and she’s also a genius engineer. As long as she can be motivated, her skills are very reliable.

She’s actually the real sister of Fubuki, commander of the 1st team of the Force. Due to a disparity in the growth control process, she looks younger, but she’s actually the older of the sibling.

Siden Ritter is a powerful soldier with a venomous tongue. He has a strong pride and a negative personality, being very strict both with himself and others, which causes relational problems.

In his previous unit he did not get along with the captain, so he has been transferred. That being said, his abilities are excellent, allowing him to achieve results during operations.

Despite his attitude, he tends to admit it when he meets someone stronger than him, and he admires the Septentrion. He looks up to Seto Narukami, who has the same kind of powers.

Kyoka Eden is known as both talented and beautiful. While she has many fans in the Force, she doesn’t appear to care about her appearance. She is very caring and is often placed in organizational roles. While her aura is usually gentle and calm, she becomes very serious and determined in battle, suddenly changing her personality.

The first trailer is dedicated to the lance, while the second takes on the sharp and technical challenge of the long sword.

You can watch both below.

“Stoic, poised and precise. The Lance is a weapon with excellent defensive and evasive capabilities. Guard or step-dodge enemy attacks to stay in the offensive as much as possible.”

“Cool, calm, and collected. The Long Sword relies on consecutive slashes to charge up the Spirit Gauge, then unleash powerful Spirit Blade attacks, calculated dodges and counterattacks.”

5 More Classic Titles Are Coming To Nintendo Switch Online, and None of Them Are Earthbound

3 years 5 months ago

Fans of obscure SNES and NES games, get excited. Nintendo has announced a December games update for Switch Online, revealing that five more classic titles are coming to the service this week.

Just when we thought they couldn’t scrape the bottom of the barrel any more, they somehow found a way. It brings me pain to report that Earthbound is not among the games being added.

The games coming to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System libraries are as follows:

  • Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!
  • The Ignition Factor
  • SUPER VALID IV
  • Tuff E Nuff

As for the Nintendo Entertainment System library, we get a single new game:

  • Nightshade

The additions aren’t that bad; Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! is the third game in the beloved Donkey Kong Country series, so it’s nice to see there are still first-party classic titles being added to the service, even if it’s at a slow pace.

The Ignition Factor is an adventure game in which you play as a firefighter and navigate through emergency situations to extinguish fires and rescue people.

SUPER VALID IV is a side-scrolling platformer, while Tuff E Nuff is a fighting game.

Nightshade for the NES is an action-adventure game that was supposed to have two sequels, but they were canceled because the first game was so poorly received. Nice.

It’s hard to complain about new games being added to the service because Nintendo doesn’t have to keep adding them. It would be nice, though, to get some of the bigger titles that are missing.

Fortnite Adds New ‘Performance Mode’ for PC Version

3 years 5 months ago

Fortnite studio Epic Games is adding a new Performance Mode feature to the PC version of the game for older computers to run it better.

According to the announcement, the new setting will decrease the visual quality to lower the amount of memory used with less strain on the CPU and GPU during gameplay. The mode is more suited for older hardware or systems that are already running low-end graphics settings to further improve framerate.

The experimental alpha Performance Mode can be toggled on and off in the video settings menu, while users with older hardware will be prompted to turn the feature on after logging into Battle Royale or Creative modes where it is supported.

Fortnite players will also be able to shrink the size of the game by opting out of high-resolution textures by disabling the option within the Epic Games Launcher’s Fortnite installation options page.

Epic Games said the high-resolution textures account for around 14 GB, and disabling it would decrease the game size as low as 17 GB. The company pushed an update last October that reduced the game size of the PC version by 60 GB smaller.

The Performance Mode and the high-resolution textures option will be coming to the PC version tomorrow, Dec. 15.
