Breath of the Wild’s Blood Moon Spells Disaster for One Player Following Lynel Fight

2 years 8 months ago

Anyone who has ever played Breath of the Wild knows how difficult fighting some of its enemies can be, especially when you’re still getting the hang of things at the start. Whether its simple Bokoblins or intimidating Guardians, just about everything is a challenge for newcomers.

This only gets more challenging once the Blood Moon is introduced in the game, as it resurrects all of the enemies you’ve defeated in order to repopulate the world. While this is always something to keep an eye out for, there has probably never been more unfortunate timing for this to occur than what happened to one player in the post below.

As you can see in their post to the Breath of the Wild subreddit, the user above had some pretty bad luck after just narrowly clearing an intense battle with a Lynel in the game. Right as the centaur-like mini-boss entered its death animation, the sky went red and the eerie song that accompanies the Blood Moon began to play.

Valorant Patch 3.04 Notes Mostly Comprise Bug Fixes & Quality of Life Improvements

2 years 8 months ago

Riot Games delayed the start of Episode 3’s second Act earlier this month to allow itself more time to deliver what it promises are a stack of big changes for its new Sept. 8 launch date. For that reason, it’s perhaps no surprise that today’s update isn’t particularly substantial. Patch 3.04 is mostly comprised of bug fixes, and quality of life improvements for esports and casual/ranked games alike.

The only Agent change is for Omen, whose Dark Cover now deploys more accurately in accordance with the targeted position as shown on the mini map.

Here are the full list of changes and additions:

Omen Change

Fixed an issue where Omen’s Dark Cover could travel in unintended ways
○ This Dark Cover bug caused the ability to settle slightly off from where it was aimed. You may notice a slight change in how the smoke behaves while travelling and settling, but it will now land exactly where the targeting preview shows.

New Valorant ‘Recon’ Skin Bundle Finally Adds the Butterfly Knife Fans Been Hoping For

2 years 8 months ago

The superb artistry of Valorant’s premium weapon skins is something fans of the game are understandably enamored with. Time and time again, Riot Games has delivered unique fantasy designs, unlike anything we’ve seen in a tactical shooter before. Today, though, the introduction of the new ‘Recon’ weapon skin bundle is likely to impress for different reasons: first, because they’re based on a grounded military design you would expect to see in a game like Call of Duty, and secondly because it finally adds the butterfly knife skin that fans have long been hoping for.

Recon is a 7,100 VP weapon skin bundle containing four firearms –the Ghost, Spectre, Phantom, and Guardian–, and one Balisong (butterfly knife). It is upgradable with Radianite points across different levels, which add various new weapon attachments. These are purely cosmetic and do not change gameplay. The bundle launches later today, Aug. 24.

The levels are as follows:

Gun Levels

  • Level 1 – Custom model and ADS reticle
  • Level 2 – Randomized Side Attachments (do not change gameplay or give any advantage; are purely cosmetics)
  • Level 3 – Randomized Bottom Attachments (do not change gameplay or give any advantage; are purely cosmetics)
  • Level 4 – Kill Banner (red, blue, and green variants)

Balisong (Butterfly Knife Melee) Levels

  • Level 1 – Custom Model
  • Level 2 – Custom Animations and Audio
  • Variant 1 – Red Camouflage
  • Variant 2 – Blue Camouflage
  • Variant 3 – Green Camouflage

Sean Marino, Riot Games’ lead artist, said of the Recon bundle’s design in a press release today:

6 Iconic Franchises that Debuted on the SNES

2 years 8 months ago

Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the Super Nintendo’s launch in North America. It was on Aug. 23, 1991 that the 16-bit wonder, AKA the SNES, took the continent by storm with an exciting series of launch games new and existing franchises including Super Mario World, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Gradius III, and last but not least, SimCity. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Super Nintendo saw a pantheon of amazing games in its 5+ years as Nintendo’s primary home console. Old standbys like the aforementioned Mario, as well as series like The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kirby, Metroid, and more saw stellar new entries.

Additionally, the SNES saw the debut of plenty of new franchises, many of which stand strong (relatively speaking) to this day. We have compiled a list of seven such franchises that saw their humble beginnings and starts on the Super Nintendo.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina New Character Announced; Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon Gameplay Revealed

2 years 8 months ago

Today Type-Moon had some interesting news to share about its upcoming games, Melty Blood: Type Lumina and Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon.

First of all, we get to see the announcement of a new character that will join the roster of Melty Blood: Type Lumina, and it’s Miyako Arima. She is the first to be announced of another five.

You can check her out in the trailer and screenshots below, alongside an official description.

The eldest daughter of the Arima branch family, which took Shiki in as a child. Currently in the fifth grade, she sees herself as Shiki’s other sister.

Her feelings are easy to see as she always wears her heart on her sleeve. She unabashedly adores her kind, quiet older “brother”, but whenever he is near, she becomes so nervous she can barely speak. This continued for many years until Shiki was suddenly called back to the Tohno family, and Miyako did not take the news well.
She learned bajiquan by observing others in her family’s dojo, though it now sits unused.

Although she was nowhere near the skill of a true martial artist, her abilities quickly flourish in the ensuing battles. Her destructive powers make it hard to believe she is only 11 years old.

Spider-Man: No Way Home’s First Trailer Teases More of the Multiverse With a Surprise Reveal

2 years 8 months ago

Spider-Man is one of the most popular Marvel characters, so it’s no surprise that the third MCU Spider-Man movie would be met with such hype and excitement. And indeed, the first official teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has just dropped, and it promises to be every bit as exciting as fans have hyped it up to be.

You can check out the trailer for yourself down below:

After the events of Far From Home, Peter Parker (reprised by Tom Holland) is dealing with the aftermath of having his identity revealed to the entire world. The trailer also shows Doctor Strange’s involvement in the story as he casts a spell to help Peter out by making everyone forget that he’s Spider-Man.

This, of course, ends up with serious repercussions and brings back the theory of the multiverse, as introduced in Endgame and Loki. The trailer ends with a huge gut punch, as we see the return of Doc Ock, played by Alfred Molina, who made his first movie appearance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, all the way back in 2004 when Tobey Maguire still donned the mantle of Spidey himself.

This suggests that perhaps the MCU and Sony’s own Spiderverse could finally be merging, and it’ll be exciting to see how that all plays out.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to air on Dec. 17.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Gets 60 FPS Update on PS5 & Xbox Series X|S

2 years 8 months ago

Ubisoft has just announced that their open world action-RPG, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, will be receiving a brand new update that will double the game’s framerate from 30 to 60 frames-per-second on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S when playing the game via backwards compatibility.

The news comes by way of a post from Ubisoft’s official community site that went live earlier today. Specifically, the patch is entitled Update 1.6.0 and will be deployed tomorrow (24 August). The patch weighs in at just 370MB on Xbox consoles and 470MB on PlayStation 5.

Our very own Zhiqing Wan reviewed the PC version of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey when it launched in 2018 and was very impressed with the title awarding it 4.5/5, concluding:

It’s strange, because Odyssey barely even feels like an Assassin’s Creed game. Take away Layla Hassan and the “Assassin’s Creed” brand from the title, and I’d just look at this game as a really strong, standalone historical fiction video game. Despite that, or perhaps because of that, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey quickly becomes the best entry we’ve seen from the series in the last 10 years. Ubisoft has fully embraced the RPG formula with Odyssey, and they’ve created a game that feels refreshingly confident and self-assured. There are still a few missteps to work out, but for now, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is one of the most charming open world RPGs you’ll play this year.

Artist Reimagines Mario Defeating Bowser Using Japanese Mythology

2 years 8 months ago

Mario defeating Bowser is a tale as old as time, as the rivalry has taken place for decades in many different forms. Nothing beats the original way to take down the King Koopa, though, which sees everyone’s favorite plumber jump on an ax to send his enemy plummeting into the lava below.

To commemorate this classic battle, one artist has created some pretty amazing artwork of it, with one big difference. Instead of the usual pixelated version of their battle, Canadian Turt1e posted the following reimagining to the gaming subreddit.

As you can see in the image above, the Mario artist reimagined the epic battle using Japanese mythology. Everything about this piece of art is amazing, depicting Mario as a Samurai, Peach in a Japanese robe/gown, and Bowser as a demon.

A closer look into Canadian Turt1e’s Instagram shows that they’ve been creating these dope reimaginings for a while, which we’ve compiled for you below.

Bungie Hypes Upcoming Destiny 2: The Witch Queen Reveal With Cryptic Trailer Showing Savathun

2 years 8 months ago

The reveal of Destiny 2’s next expansion, The Witch Queen will finally debut tomorrow just hours ahead of the start of the next season. It’s likely that the upcoming season and The Witch Queen (which is due sometime in 2022) are closely connected narratively, hence the timing.

Even though the reveal stream is almost here, that doesn’t mean that Bungie can’t engage in a bit of last-minute hype building. And thus, this cryptic trailer, titled Truth, showing off the witch queen herself, Savathun, is born. Check it out in all its glory below.

Well, that’s Savathun alright. She thinks “truth is a funny thing” and that’s pretty much all we can glean on the surface at least from this trailer. It’s widely believed that Savathun is possessing or pretending to be someone in the Tower right now in Destiny 2, and the leader in the clubhouse as to who that might be is Osiris. It’s possible he’s a red herring, though, so keep your mind open to a twist.

We may finally learn the “truth” on that and much more tomorrow when the reveal stream kicks off 9AM PT on the official Destiny 2 Twitch channel.

Monster Train: First Class Is the Switch’s Indie Rogue-lite Flavor of the Month

2 years 8 months ago

Monster Train is a deck-building rogue-lite game that was originally released on PC last year but has since made its way to the Nintendo Switch. Dubbed Monster Train: First Class, the Switch version comes with The Last Divinity DLC, which adds a new boss, clan, and several other variables that help mix up your runs. Being able to take a strategic deck-building rogue-lite game with you on the Switch sounds like a recipe for success, and yeah, Monster Train totally fits the bill.

While I was initially tempted to dismiss it as a Slay the Spire clone –why play any other deck-building rogue-lite when you already have Slay the Spire?– Monster Train: First Class quickly made me eat my words by introducing two core mechanics that separate it from Mega Crit’s excellent game.

Instead of playing as a single character with established perks and drawbacks, you get to pick cards from various different Clans in the game. You’ll pick one Clan to start with at the beginning of each run, but you’ll be able to build your deck with cards from the other Clans to help round everything out. Different Clans specialize in different areas; the Hellhorne Clan is much more focused on damage output, while Awoken cards are more oriented towards defense. The new Wurmik Clan includes a new currency for players to experiment with, and helps to augment cards, so it’s up to you to figure out the best synergies within a deck.

The second core mechanic that helps Monster Train stand out is the battle arena itself.

Psychonauts 2 Review – Doubly Fine

2 years 8 months ago

Psychonauts 2 on Xbox Series X

Psychonauts 2 is a game that in many other alternate universes likely doesn’t exist. The chances that an indie developer (at least up until recently) survives over two decades and has the opportunity to follow up on a game they made fifteen years ago in a genre that is no longer in vogue, is very low in this day and age, to say the least. But fortunately for all of us in this universe, we are blessed to be living in the same time and space where Double Fine is given the chance to make Psychonauts 2 because it is just absolutely fantastic.

Psychonauts 2 picks up right where the original game left off. There’s a quick recap for newcomers that quickly explains what happens in the first game, but it’s not long before you’re off and running.

I’ll admit, it was a bit tough for me to fully grasp what was going on at first. I played the original game at launch as a kid and never finished it, so it was a bit overwhelming, but it shouldn’t be an issue for newcomers.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite Review – Short, Controlled Bursts of Fun

2 years 8 months ago

Aliens: Fireteam Elite on PS5

You’d think adapting one of cinema’s most iconic and fearsome monsters to video games would be an absolute cake walk, but in truth, Ridley Scott’s beloved beasties have mostly had a hard time morphing their DNA with the interactive medium… well, mostly. From the heady highs of Creative Assembly’s excellent Alien: Isolation to the dreary doldrums of 2013’s disappointing Aliens: Colonial Marines, finding a fun experience centered around everyone’s favorite parasitic extraterrestrial has been a bit of a crapshoot. Whether that hit-and-miss trend will continue after Aliens: Fireteam Elite is anyone’s guess, but what I can say is this: Cold Iron Studios’ debut is an effortlessly entertaining co-op shooter that leverages the sci-fi horror licence in plenty of smart and engaging ways. Phew!

Taking place 23 years after the original film trilogy, Aliens: Fireteam Elite throws you into the planet-hopping military boots of a newly recruited United States Colonial Marine who’s been sent to investigate a mysterious distress call from LV-895. While not the most creative way to frame the overall narrative, it’s a familiar enough setup that feels respectful to the source material while simultaneously getting players into the thick of the action sharpish.

Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon Gets New TV Commercial Focusing on Ciel

2 years 8 months ago

Today Type-Moon released a new TV commercial of the remake of the legendary visual novel Tsukihime, titled Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon.

The trailer introduces the game’s characters, but unlike yesterday’s it focuses primarily on Ciel instead of Arcueid Brunestud.

You can enjoy the video below.

If you’re unfamiliar with Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon, it was originally an eroge released for Windows in December 2000 by Type-Moon, the creators of the Fate series. It was then adapted in 2003 into an anime series titled Shingetsutan Tsukihime.

It also inspired the Melty Blood fighting game series, and that’s also getting a new game, Melty Blood: Type Lumina.

Written by the extremely prolific Kinoko Nasu, it’s considered the predecessor of that Fate/stay night that spawned the super-popular Fate franchise. The similarities are certainly quite visible.
