Top 15 Best Video Game Prequels

The gaming industry is full of sequels, and while that’s not a bad thing, sometimes the story keeps on rolling without any time to sit down and explain what just happened or how we even got to this point in the first place. That being said, some games have taken the term sequel very lightly and flipped it around instead of opting to focus on the past rather than the future. This developer choice has brought us some of the best games in gaming history while confusing a ton of us as the next entry is marked with a sequential number rather than labeled as a prequel. Here are 15 of the best video game prequels that gave new life to the franchises they came from.

How to Get Shield Bubble in Fortnite (& What It Does)

The Fortnite Shield Bubble has just been unvaulted in-game following the 20.30 hotfix earlier this week, and so chances are you’re wondering how to get it, or maybe just what it does. Well, you’re in the right place, as in this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know about this handy new item.

How to Get Shield Bubble in Fortnite

This new item can be found in chests in Fortnite from today, May 13 until May 16 at 11:59 p.m. This is a ‘Trial Period’ that’s currently running for the protective Bubbles and Balloons before they go up in a head-to-head vote on Funding Stations.

If you’re wanting to back the Shield Bubble to stay in the game permanently, you’ll have to spend your Gold Bars at a Funding Station and vote for it. Whichever item is fully funded first, will enter the loot pool until the end of the season.

When Does Voting Begin?

The vote between the Shield Bubble and the Balloons items will start on Funding Boards following the end of the trial period. At the time of writing, Epic Games hasn’t announced an official time, but we’d suspect it could be once the next update (likely to drop on Tuesday, May 17) lands next week.

What Does it Do?

Throwing down one of these will create a temporary dome which is invulnerable to all damage including explosive, Air Strike missile, and standard gunfire.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore by Vanillaware for PS4 & Switch Gets New Trailer Showing its Characters

Nippon Ichi Software released another trailer of the upcoming real-time strategy JRPG remaster GrimGrimoire OnceMore.

The trailer showcases the rich and beautifully drawn cast of characters that appear in the game, highlighting Vanillaware’s fantastic artwork and providing a hint at the story.

You can check it out below.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore will release in Japan on July 28, for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. If you’d like to see more, you can check out the original trailer and another one.

If you’re not familiar with the original GrimGrimoire, it was originally released in 2007 for PlayStation 2. This new remaster includes plenty of new elements, on top of higher-resolution visuals and wide-screen format.

At the moment, NIS America (which also published the original game in North America) hasn’t announced a western release, so we’ll have to wait and see whether this game is brought over, but I would be surprised if it isn’t.

Yakuza’s Goro Majima Gets His Own Perfume Line in Japan Just in Time for His Birthday

Who doesn’t love the Yakuza series’ craziest character Goro Majima? Today (it’s already May 14 in Japan) is his birthday, and Japan is celebrating.

To be specific, a brand new pair of perfumes has been made available at the popular Don Quijote retail stores, inspired by Majima himself.

They’re named “Calm Musk” and “Mad Floral” and they’re obviously inspired by the two contrasting sides of Majima’s personality. They’re also based on the character’s image from Yakuza 0 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Each 50 ml bottle of perfume costs 3,300 yen (approximately $25) and they come decorated with Majima’s tattoos.

You can also purchase them both together in a “Luxury Limited Edition” costing 6,600 yen (approximately $50) that comes with a bonus aroma stone carved with the Majima family crest.

Below you can see pictures of all the items and likely bemoan the fact that you don’t live in Japan, given that there’s no word of a release in the west, which is most unlikely.

On the other hand, if you do lie in Japan, you’re likely already running to the closest Don Quijote, so I should probably end this article here.

Square Enix Announces Record Financial Results; Talks Blockchain/NFT, Potential New Studios & Acquisitions, & More

Today Square Enix announced its financial results for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2022.

Looking at the whole company, both net sales and operating income grew year-on-year. Both revenue and profits established new full-year records.

Looking at the Digital Entertainment segment, which includes games, revenue for HD games dropped slightly year-on-year despite launching multiple new titles. On the other hand, the performance of the MMO business grew sharply thanks to the launch of expansions for Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X, on top of a “sharp rise in monthly subscribers” for FFXIV.

The performance of existing smartphone games is defined as “somewhat weak” but sales still increased year-on-year due to the application of new revenue recognition standards.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Gets War of the Visions Collab; Adds King Mont, Sterne, & Vinera as New Units

Despite being about eight years old at this point, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is still doing pretty well as one of Square Enix and Gumi’s many mobile gacha games on the market. The game is still in the midst of its Final Fantasy VIII collaboration event, and a new one has just been announced with War of the Visions, which is meant to be a prequel to FFBE story-wise.

The collaboration starts today, and will run till May 25. Players who keep their daily login streak going throughout the event will also be rewarded with Sterne, who can eventually be upgraded to his NV version just by collecting the login bonuses. The bonuses also include summon tickets, so it’s definitely worth it to keep that streak going even if you’re not planning on checking out the event quests.

In addition to that, King Mont and Vinera will have a featured summon banner, where players can try their luck by using Lapis to try to pull them. These characters do have a step-up banner as well, so you can potentially save on some Lapis by pulling on this one.

Finally, the event quests can be farmed for event points, which can be exchanged for various rewards like resources and more summon tickets.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is now available on mobile devices.

If you can’t get enough of Kirby since the launch of Kirby and the Forgotten Land earlier this year, you’ll be glad to know that Nintendo has just announced the next Nintendo 64 title that will be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service this month, and this time it will be Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, which was originally released in 2000, was the first Kirby game to feature 3D graphics. In this platforming game, which takes on a 2.5D side-scrolling perspective, you play as Kirby as he ventures beyond Dream Land to reassemble a sacred crystal that has been shattered by dark matter.

Of course, in traditional Kirby fashion, you can inhale enemies to capture their unique abilities during the quest. In this game, the copy abilities can be combined into all sorts of special powers.
