MechWarrior Coming to Xbox Consoles, DLC Delayed Into 2021

3 years 5 months ago
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries' 'Heroes of the Inner Sphere' DLC has been delayed until Spring 2021 to coincide with the launch of the game on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Steam and GoG. Piranha Games revealed the news as part of a blog post on the MechWarrior 5 website, noting that Cyberpunk 2077's release date shifting to December 10th influenced their decision to move the release date, as this was when the DLC was originally slated to launch. "Any developer wants their titles to get as much attention as possible, and obviously sharing a release date with Cyberpunk was less than optimal. Day one sales and marketing are so important to a successful product launch, and we believe that rescheduling our release date will allow MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries to have the opportunity and attention it deserves," the blog post reads. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/11/mechwarrior-5-mercenaries-review"] The good news is that this will allow for a simultaneous launch for MechWarrior 5 across multiple platforms in Spring 2021. It'll be the first time a MechWarrior game has been on a console since 2004, when MechAssault 2 landed on the original Xbox. According to Piranha Games, Mechwarrior 5 on Xbox is "the first true MechWarrior experience ever on a console." Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries launched on PC in December 2019 exclusively on the Epic Games Store. We reviewed the game at launch, scoring it an 8.1 and calling it a "modern revival of the series." Cuphead DLC 'The Delicious Last Course' Delayed Again

3 years 5 months ago
Studio MDHR has announced that the Delicious Last Course DLC for Cuphead has been delayed until sometime next year. In a statement published on Studio MDHR’s Twitter account,t hed developer shared that they aren’t “content for this final chapter to be anything less than our best work.” As such, the studio has made the difficult decision to delay the content. The studio cites the global pandemic as having an impact on the development of the final Cuphead DLC. “Rather than compromise on our vision in response to COVID,” the team ultimately decided on pushing it back. The Delicious Last Course is slated to be a conclusion to the story that began with Cuphead. The DLC was announced in 2018 and was originally scheduled for a 2019 release before getting delayed into 2020. Now it has been delayed once more, though the external factor of the pandemic played a part in the most recent delay. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/02/cuphead-the-delicious-last-course-new-gameplay-trailer"] There’s no release date for the Delicious Last Course, though the studio says it’s aiming for 2021. Watch Dogs: Legion Online Mode Delayed to Fix Single-Player Bugs

3 years 5 months ago
Ubisoft has announced that Watch Dogs: Legion's Online mode has been delayed to early 2021 to allow the team to focus on fixing the technical issues players have been experiencing since launch. Ubisoft shared the news in a patch update for Watch Dogs: Legion, and promised that "the dev team is committed to fixing these issues and will not stop until everyone can experience the game as intended." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/28/watch-dogs-legion-review"] Later this week, Ubisoft will be releasing Update 2.20 to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Stadia, and it will bring a manual Save Game button to PC, as well as "further stability improvements for Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and PlayStation 4." You can read the full patch notes here. As for the delay on Watch Dogs: Legion's Online mode, this decision was made to ensure the team's top priority was fixing the issues in single player, while also giving them more time to "test the Online experience to help ensure a smooth launch of the mode." Ubisoft also has many more improvements and quality of life features planned for Watch Dogs: Legion in the future, including "more stability improvements and further graphics optimizations for PC to reach our goal of consistent 60FPS for higher end GPUs." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/26/watch-dogs-legion-12-things-to-do-first"] Even though the PC version is getting the manual saving button in this new update, we are still waiting to hear when in December the Xbox Series X/S will get it, as a widespread issue has caused autosaving to simply stop, causi

PlayStation Plus Games for December 2020 Announced

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation Plus games for December 2020 are Worms Rumble, Just Cause 4, and Rocket Arena. Announced by PlayStation.Blog, all of these games will be part of PlayStation Plus from December 1 through January 4, and are playable on both PS4 and PS5. Worms Rumble is the latest entry in the long running series that offers "intense, real-time, arena-based 32 player cross-platform combat." Featuring both Deathmatch and Battle Royale game modes, seasonal events, daily challenges, and community collaborations, there is something for everyone here. In our review of Just Cause 4, we said it "has everything you expect from a Just Cause game, almost to a fault. Relative to Just Cause 3 the improvements are widespread across its beautiful open world, but generally minor. So while blowing up yet another dictator’s army is the same kind of mindless explosive fun and physics-based comedy the series is built on, it doesn’t do much to incorporate the new weather systems or grapple mods into combat." Marvel's Avengers Hasn't Recouped Its Development Costs Yet

3 years 5 months ago
Marvel's Avengers sales have been lower than expected, and the game hasn't yet recouped its development costs, leading to an estimated ¥7 billion (approximately $67 million USD) operating loss in Square Enix's HD Games segment during the last financial quarter. Company president Yosuke Matsude explained in a newly translated results briefing, "Sales of Marvel’s Avengers were lower than we had expected and unable to completely offset the amortization of the game’s development costs." Game analyst David Gibson previously explained that the company sold 60% of its planned units, and that the numbers implied the game cost around $100 million to make. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/10/marvels-avengers-review"] Responding to an investor's question on the subject, Matsuda clarified that - had Avengers not been released in that quarter - the company would have made a profit. That comes down to both development and marketing costs: "In addition to the amortization of that game’s development costs," explained Matsuda, "another significant factor associated with the title was the fact that we undertook a major advertising campaign at the time of its launch to make up for delays in our marketing efforts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fallout 76 Accidentally Releases New Update on Xbox

3 years 5 months ago
Bethesda has launched the Fallout 76 Steel Dawn update early, after a glitch allowed Xbox players to download the update ahead of schedule. In a post on the Fallout blog. Bethesda explained that the Steel Dawn update was originally scheduled to go live on December 1 across all platforms, but the Brotherhood of Steel-themed expansion is available now for all platforms following the mistake. Essentially, players on Xbox platforms could download Steel Dawn, but it meant that this prevented them from playing the rest of the game. Bethesda was actively investigating the issue before making the decision. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/11/20/final-fallout-76-review"] According to the blog post, "the entire BGS team felt confident that Steel Dawn is ready to go," so instead of fixing the early access Xbox issue, they have now launched the update for everyone, a week ahead of schedule. The new update brings with it a questline that introduces The Brotherhood of Steel to Appalachia, as well as C.A.M.P Shelters, which are customizable underground bases. You can check the full update notes for more details, and see the file size required for the platform you plan to download Steel Dawn on. PS5 Gets a Second Performance-Improving System Update

3 years 5 months ago
For the second week running, Sony has dropped a PS5 system update designed to improve system performance - but it's still unclear what the patch specifically changes. The 20.02-02.26.00 system update weighs in at 886MB and, like last week's update, its details read simply: "This system software update improves system performance." If you want to download the update manually, head to: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/20/sony-shares-solution-for-ps5-downloading-queue-bug-ign-news"] Sony traditionally doesn't comment on the contents of its system updates, and hasn't responded to requests for comment on the recent patches either. Last week's patch did appear to help solve the download queue bug that had affected PS5 players since launch. It may be that we now see new fixes for the other PS5 issues that have been reported in recent weeks, although nothing has been confirmed at time of writing. If you're in the market for a PS5, or games and accessories for your new console, Black Friday could be the right time to find them.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light Final Review

3 years 5 months ago

Were it not for Bungie’s split with Activision last year, it feels like Destiny 2’s latest expansion, Beyond Light, might have just been called Destiny 3 instead. As the first installment in a trio of announced expansions, Beyond Light takes some bold steps in a new direction for the series – whether it’s the story’s darker, morally grey tone, the removal of legacy content from Destiny 2’s sandbox, or our formerly-exemplar Guardians giving in and using the corrosive power of The Darkness. In many ways, this is not the same Destiny 2 we’ve been playing for the past three years.

But where Beyond Light deviates from its legacy in some important ways, it also finds itself making some of the same mistakes all over again. With a campaign that’s too short, an endgame that has you grinding the same activities ad nauseum, and a sandbox that seems perpetually imbalanced, my Guardian’s adventures on the snow-covered moon of Europa sometimes had me feeling left out in the cold in a very familiar way.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure Review

3 years 5 months ago

The adorable Astro’s Playroom may have stolen people’s hearts at the launch of the PlayStation 5 (no doubt in part thanks to it coming along for free), but any 3D platformer fan would do well to not leave Sackboy: A Big Adventure locked in the toybox. This spin-off (which is available on PS4 as well) is relentlessly charming, bringing creative level ideas to a familiar format with a focus on co-op play, even if it lacks the same precision and depth of the most-loved games in the genre.

While Sackboy may have been cut from the cloth of the LittleBigPlanet games before it, A Big Adventure feels far closer to the likes of Super Mario 3D World, both in structure and design. Levels are generally wide-pathed, isometric dioramas for you and up to three friends to run all over, grabbing point bubbles, beating up baddies, and hunting for collectibles as you do. It also drops the level editor or community sharing that have been iconic to the LittleBigPlanet series, instead focusing on telling a simple story about Sackboy trying to save Craftworld from the evil Vex.

Console Tribalism 'One of the Worst Things in the Industry' Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Says

3 years 5 months ago
In a new interview, Xbox boss Phil Spencer shared how toxicity can harm the video game industry, calling console tribalism “one of the worst things about” the video game industry. Speaking with The Verge, Spencer spoke out against what he calls “tribalism in the industry,” though more popularly referred to as the “console wars.” Spencer, who heads up Microsoft’s Xbox operation, goes as far as to say that tribalism may be the only thing that could force him out of the games industry. “The tribalism in the industry, if there was anything that would ever drive me out of the industry, it’s actually that,” Spencer says on The Verge’s Decoder podcast. When he talks about the vocal core “that just really hates the other consumer product,” Spencer says “that’s just so off-putting to me… To me, it’s one of the worst things about our industry.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-xbox-series-x-games&captions=true"] And even beyond that, Spencer says Microsoft’s competition isn’t actually Sony or Nintendo. “We’re in the entertainment business. The biggest competitor we have s apathy over the products and services, games that we build.” This isn’t the first time Spencer has spoken out against toxicity in the games industry.

How Sneaker Culture Predicted PS5 and Xbox Series X Scalpers

3 years 5 months ago
“All major retailers and Sony, [they] had so many bugs and issues where the PS5 would get taken out of my cart,” Ace, a Twitter user who shared their experience buying a PlayStation 5 with IGN. So, after failing to secure a PS5 through the usual digital stores and even directly from Sony, Ace did what anyone does after missing a sale, and started shopping the gray market. Ace ended up paying $900 for a PS5 on Craigslist – and they weren't the only ones going to such extreme measures. The PS5 and Xbox Series X are this season’s hottest items, and their popularity is wildly driving up prices among unofficial retailers. It’s a trend we’ve seen in another industry, on a far more regular basis — the second-hand market reacts similarly when there’s a limited sneaker release from brands like Nike or Air Jordan. It’s an apt comparison, says Dr. Jemayne Lavar King, an Assistant Professor of English at Johnson C. Smith University and author of Sole Food: Digestible Sneaker Culture. Dr.

Xbox Has Built More Series X Units Than Series S - For Now

3 years 5 months ago
Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has explained that more Xbox Series X units were built for launch than Xbox Series S, but that the ratio of units made of each console will likely be more even by next holiday season. In an interview with The Verge's Decoder podcast, Spencer explained the logic, saying that the company expected to see more demand for Series X at launch, something he says has proven to be true. "We figured that our first holiday, and probably our second holiday, you would see more of the higher end SKU, the Series X sold. We built more Series Xs than we did Series Ss." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/fixing-ps5-xbox-series-x-launch-issues-next-gen-console-watch"] It seemingly won't be too long until those numbers balance out a little more: "I think when we go into spring and summer, we’ll probably moderate that a bit." Spencer continued. "Over the long run, in most cases, price wins out.

Rainbow Six Siege’s 4K 120FPS Next-Gen Update Coming This December

3 years 5 months ago

Rainbow Six Siege’s next-generation update will arrive on December 1, and brings with it a variety of improvements and quality of life features that should help Siege feel at home on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Chief among the upgrades, Siege on next-gen will support resolutions of up to 4K and frame rates of up to 120FPS. The update will, akin to many games, provide two modes for this. Talking to IGN, Mazen Elbawab, Software Project Lead on Rainbow Six Siege, said: “You can either favour the resolution of the game or the frame rate. If you favour frame rate we guarantee you playing at 120FPS at the highest resolution possible, versus if you favour resolution then the game renders at 4K with the highest frame rate possible.”

Elbawab noted that these options will be added to the menus if the game recognises that you have a 4K TV capable of 120Hz. If your TV is not capable of high refresh rates, then the console defaults to 4K 60FPS.

While the higher resolution and frame rate will make Siege look crisper and smoother, the game won’t technically look ‘better’. “There is a certain increase to some of the textures but I wouldn’t qualify it as highly noticeable,” said Elbawab. “The focus was really on the performance side.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/24/rainbow-six-siege-ps5-and-xbox-series-x-official-trailer"]

That means no high-resolution texture pack, and definitely no ray tracing. “The idea was to get as close as possible to the competitiveness of PC hardware, which is why we focused on getting up to 120FPS,” Elbawab explained. “There’s a balance to strike, and we thought for now using ray tracing would not benefit that competitiveness, which is why we focused on 120FPS.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/24/hitman-3-under-the-hood-chongqing-location-reveal-trailer"] The video mentions that the rendering, animation and AI upgrades coming to Hitman 3 will also be available retroactively in the missions of Hitman 1 + 2, as the entire trilogy of missions will be available to players who purchase the third game. In a separate blog post detailing IO Interactive's partnership with Intel, it was revealed that PC players will receive special enhancements at launch and Ray Tracing as a post-launch update, "later in 2021."

Xbox Could Be an App on Your TV Within a Year, Says Phil Spencer

3 years 5 months ago
Head of Xbox Phil Spencer says he thinks Xbox will release a smart TV app used to play games, with no console required, "in the next 12 months". In an interview with The Verge's Decoder podcast, Spencer was asked what was stopping Microsoft from releasing Xbox as an app for smart TVs that meet a minimum hardware specification. The answer, it seems, is nothing: "I think you’re going to see that in the next 12 months," replied Spencer, "I don’t think anything is going to stop us from doing that." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/fixing-ps5-xbox-series-x-launch-issues-next-gen-console-watch"] Spencer doesn't go into any specifics on the mooted app, but we've previous heard the Xbox exec discuss the idea of Xbox 'Streaming Sticks' that could be used to stream games through xCloud after being plugged into the TV.

FIFA 21: 6 Differences on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

3 years 5 months ago
On December 4th, FIFA 21 makes its way to the new generation of consoles with its release on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Players who already own the game will be getting a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Series X/S respectively, but what’s actually different about these new versions? Here are the headline features of what to expect when FIFA 21 hits next-gen:

1 . Enhanced Matchday Atmosphere

Before you even step onto the pitch a new sense of occasion is created as the team buses pull up, players walk through into the changing rooms and fans are seen and heard as they enter the stadium. While not occurring for every match, it looks set to really build up the atmosphere ahead of big knockout ties or derby encounters. Once the game kicks off the action takes over and has never looked more realistic due to brand new lighting systems in place. Extra details can clearly be seen from the texture of the grass to the sunlight cannoning off the metal structures shadowing the pitch. 2. New Camera Angle

In order to showcase the more realistic action EA have introduced a new camera angle called GameCam. Heavily influenced by real-life broadcasts it aims to both show off the new and improved atmospheres created in the stadiums, but also help you build better passages of play and spot danger quickly due to its wide angle nature.

3. Updated Player Visuals

When the camera is tight in on a player though you’ll be able to see just how much more detailed their models are on PS5 and Series X/S. Detail is the watchword as well as sweat drips from brows, individual stitches on shirts can be seen and leg muscles flex and contract when making contact with the ball. Newly implemented hair strand technology also allows for all manner of hairstyle to flop and flow as players dart around the pitch.

How Spellbreak Chapter 1's Innovative Quest System Could Change Battle Royales For The Better

3 years 5 months ago
As popular as battle royale games have proven to be over the last five years, their biggest and most glaring flaws as a genre in general are usually a poor narrative with bad world building or overly static and bland content. The gameplay is always solid and the unique competitive “last man standing” premise elevates the concept, but on paper they’re typically pretty bare bones from a storytelling perspective. It’s not enough to just make an amazing map with great weapons and characters these days. That’s been done a thousand times. Nowadays, it’s all about differentiation. Spellbreak aimed to set the market on fire when it blasted onto the scene earlier this year with its unique blend of magical fireballs and enchanted arrows and it did make a splash, but it still had plenty left up its sleeve. Focusing on elemental-based spells instead of modern firearms is already a major departure from the norm, but the big new change coming with the debut of Chapter 1 on December 15th is something every developer in the battle royale space should pay attention to: quests. Plus it’s launching on Steam the same time that Chapters release with full crossplay between PC via Steam, PC via Epic Games Store, and all consoles with cross-progression too. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=spellbreak-7-screenshots&captions=true"] With Chapters, developer Proletariat is aiming to offer something that’s fresh and new on a recurring basis other than simply expanding the number of existing challenges or dailies. New chapters will debut every 12 weeks and they’ll offer three free quests per chapter and three paid quests within the paid Chapter Pass content.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands Is Live Now

3 years 5 months ago
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is officially live. Players queuing up for server access early should hopefully be in already and playing. The newest WoW expansion will take place in, where else, the Shadowlands with five new zones. The biggest quality of life change is a level squish that brings the max level back down to 60. Another big gameplay addition are the four “covenants” players can join in the afterlife. Each Covenant, whether it’s the Kyrian, Venthyr, Necrolord, or Night Fae, are associated with a different zone. Players will choose which one to join after hitting max level, and each of them comes with unique rewards and a Covenant-specific ability, transmogs, and more. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/29/world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-story-trailer"] WoW: Shadowlands was originally set to be released on October 27, but following feedback from players, Blizzard announced it would delay the expansion until today for additional polish. Players will have two weeks to familiarize themselves with the new content as the first Shadowlands raid, Castle Nathria, will be released on December 8. The 10 bosses comprising the raid will take “players into the heart of Sire Denathrius’ lair in Revendreth — along with the start of Shadowlands Season 1.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-gameplay-reveal-images&captions=true"] As players explore the Shadowlands and spend time with all the new features and additions, expect more news at a free, fully digital BlizzCon slated for early next year.
