Cyberpunk 2077 Review

3 years 5 months ago

In my experience, great open-world RPGs like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim aren't defined by the strength of their main story, but that of the side missions around it. With Cyberpunk 2077, developer CD Projekt Red has taken that philosophy and built an entire game out of it. Apart from the surprisingly short but still utterly compelling central questline that draws you through its diverse near-future cityscape, the vast majority of what you can do in Night City is entirely optional but often still extremely impactful on your journey. This more freeform structure isn’t without its faults, including loads of distracting bugs, but the strength of the missions themselves – optional or not – and the choice you have within them make Cyberpunk 2077 one of the most exciting, emotional, and just plain fun RPGs I’ve played in recent years.

You’re thrust into the shoes of V, a mercenary in Night City who (avoiding spoilers as much as I can) ends up with the psyche of long-dead rockstar and anti-corporate terrorist Johnny Silverhand trapped in their head. Johnny, played by the instantly recognizable Keanu Reeves, is a wonderfully dislikable jackass – even if, to be blunt, Reeves’ stiff performance is easily the weakest of an otherwise extremely impressive cast. Even still, Johnny’s confrontational relationship with V and the eventual growth between them is the anchor of this story as they fight to find a solution to the shared mess they find themselves in.

Tunic: A Long-Awaited Update from the Developer of Xbox's Adorable Zelda-like

3 years 5 months ago
Tunic has captivated the IGN team since its reveal back at E3 2017. The adorable Zelda-like not only has a gorgeous art style, but it played really well too. The almost-one-developer project led by Andrew Shouldice has largely been quiet for the past couple of years, however. At least until now. Granted, this isn't the meatiest of updates. IGN spoke with Shouldice, who kindly sent over one new screenshot (see that just below), and answered a few of our questions about the status of Tunic. [caption id="attachment_2447903" align="aligncenter" width="720"]New screenshot of Tunic (taken December 2020). New screenshot of Tunic (taken December 2020).[/caption]

IGN: It's December and I believe this is the first update of any kind we've had on Tunic this year. That silence has only deepened my interest in Tunic. How is the game coming along?

ANDREW SHOULDICE, LEAD DEVELOPER ON TUNIC: Really really well. TUNIC has evolved a lot since I first started on it, but in the past couple years things have really hit their stride. The game started as a look and a feel, but the larger overarching structure was kind of nebulous. Now that the game "knows what it is," making new content and adding polish mostly just sort of clicks into place.

Johnny Silverhand Tells You to Go Away If You Try to Play Cyberpunk 2077 Early With a Preload

Cyberpunk 2077 is available to preload now, and players have discovered a cute Keanu Reeves Easter egg if they try to launch the game early through GOG Galaxy. Posted to Reddit by user jmendo02, once you boot up the game after preloading it via the GOG Galaxy service, you'll see a landfill vista. You'll then get a very cheeky line from Reeves' Johnny Silverhand, who says "Go back to sleep, Samurai!

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid - Scorpina Revealed to Close Out Season 3

Cyberpunk 2077 Gets 43GB Pre-Launch Patch - and There's Seemingly Another Update Coming

3 years 5 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 has seemingly received a 43 GB pre-launch patch on Xbox, and may well receive another update at launch, according to a tweet from a CD Projekt Red employee. YouTuber DreamcastGuy - who received an Xbox version of the game early due to an apparent retailer error - posted a tweet showing a supposed 43.5 GB patch for Cyberpunk 2077, a sizable pre-launch update. However, it may not be the only patch the game receives. CD Projekt Red's Fabian replied to DreamcastGuy, saying that it's "not the update we'll have for launch", presumably pointing to the 43GB patch being a 'Day Zero' update, with a Day One update to come around launch on December 10.

UK Gangs Stealing PS5s From Delivery Trucks - While They're Driving

3 years 5 months ago
We've reported a few theories about how PS5s have been going missing in the UK, but we never expected to hear that gangs have stolen them from the back of delivery trucks while they're driving. The Times reports that PS5s - as well as TVs, cosmetics, mobile phones and cigarettes - have been stolen from trucks in movement on at least 27 occasions in the UK this year, with the figure apparently rising ahead of the Christmas period. Police have apparently contacted delivery firms about the tactic. The technique, called a "rollover", involves multiple cars boxing in a moving truck, with a thief (wearing a rope) leaving a car travelling behind to climb close, gain access to the back door, and throw the stolen goods back into the car they left, before climbing back in. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/ebay-condemns-ps5-photo-scammers-is-taking-action-against-sellers"] As we reported in our investigation into the UK's missing PS5s, supply chains such as Amazon's have high security for warehouses and delivery drivers are closely monitored to make sure they complete journeys. However, a career criminal told The Times that rollovers have become a popular tactic specifcially because of the comparable lack of security while deliveries are in motion.

Smash Bros, Splatoon and Other Fan Communities Clash With Nintendo

3 years 5 months ago
Over the last weekend, multiple fan communities have vocally criticised Nintendo's approach to cancelling events and serving cease-and-desist orders. The cancellation of an official Splatoon tournament livestream, and the blocking of sale for unofficial, charity-focused Joy-Con designs have become the latest flashpoints in the company's increasingly fractious relationship with sections of its own fans. To understand this weekend's reactions, we need to go back to last month, when Nintendo served a cease-and-desist to the Smash Bros. Melee 'Big House' tournament – one of the biggest events on the Smash Bros. competitive scene's calendar. The cease-and-desist – which centred around the tournament's use of the unofficial Slippi mod to make the game playable online – caused Big House to cancel the event outright. In a statement to Polygon, Nintendo explained that the tournament "requires use of illegally copied versions of the game in conjunction with a mod called “Slippi” during their online event. Nintendo therefore contacted the tournament organizers to ask them to stop. They refused, leaving Nintendo no choice but to step in to protect its intellectual property and brands. Nintendo cannot condone or allow piracy of its intellectual property." The wider Smash Bros.

Great Gate will see Crash attempting to scale a massive wooden grate, running across raised wooden platforms while using iron jump crates, returning from mainstay Crash games, to reach new heights. Venus Fly trap enemies are among the foes players will encounter. The official description reads:
"Deep in native villages and high amongst the treetops, the Great Gate is a sight to behold, even though Uka Ukahas scared all the villagers away. But if you start feeling above it all, there are plenty of thorny traps –and a couple Bandicoot eating plants –all too happy to bring you back down to earth."

Sewer or Later

Sewer or later brings the underground level from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back... well, back into the spotlight, as Crash scours the sewer tunnels for collectibles, fights scrubbers and spiders, and avoids barrels.

Metal Gear Solid Movie Reportedly Casts Oscar Isaac As Solid Snake

3 years 5 months ago
Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ long in the works Metal Gear Solid movie is pushing forward and Oscar Isaac is reportedly attached to star as Solid Snake. According to Deadline Isaac, a popular fan choice for the role is slated to play Solid Snake in Vogt-Roberts' (Kong: Skull Island) live-action adaptation of the 1998 Konami video game. A script has been written by Derek Connoly, with Avi Arad producing. Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond - The Final Preview

3 years 5 months ago
It’s been over a year since I last – and first – played Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, the VR revival of the classic World War II first-person shooter franchise. It’s in very capable hands at Respawn Entertainment, a renowned development studio which includes some members of the original Medal of Honor team from the late ‘90s. I played the first two missions with an Oculus Rift S and largely came to the same conclusion I did in my initial impression: that the supplemental Gallery and its emotionally powerful and historically crucial documentary-style videos with surviving WWII veterans is somewhat at odds with the arcade-y tone and fictional narrative of the video game. Once you’ve completed the clever preferences configuration disguised as a doctor’s-office visit and run through the firing range to get a feel for how combat works, Medal of Honor’s first mission puts you in the thick of trouble in 1940s Nazi Germany. You’ll mostly do a lot of walking and shooting in the warm-up, which has an interesting feel to it. While the AI isn’t that bright, being able to physically close one of your eyes and look down the iron sights to pick off your targets from medium range is a pretty cool trick that a traditional FPS on a TV screen can’t replicate. You can also use your “teeth” to pull the pin out of a grenade before chucking it by moving your hand up near your mouth. Lighting the fuse on a bundle of dynamite to blow open a safe was another highlight. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/09/medal-of-honor-above-and-beyond-gallery-trailer"] The second mission, though, is where Above and Beyond starts to better find its identity. You begin by mowing down other planes from an airplane gunner chair, then jumping out and drifting down from the sky via parachute and landing in a tree before your CO tosses you a knife (careful!) so you can cut yourself down.

PlayStation Boss Insists Sony Is Not Ignoring Japan

3 years 5 months ago
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, has insisted that a recent report that suggested PlayStation has “sidelined” Japanese developers and markets is “inaccurate”. Talking with Edge magazine issue #353, Ryan said: “The Sony stance is that the Japanese market remains incredibly important to us. We have not been as excited about the engagement of the Japanese game development community as we are now for many years.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-playstation-5-games&captions=true"] The stance is in opposition to a report from Bloomberg, published in early November. The report stated that PlayStation staff in Japan suggested Sony’s home country had been sidelined in promotional planning for PS5, and that Japanese development support teams had been reduced by as much as a third. But Ryan’s stance is that PS5 continues to strengthen PlayStation’s relationship with Japan.

3 years 5 months ago
Three Sony Japan developers, Junya Okura, Kazunobu Sato, and Keiichiro Toyama, have left the company to create Bokeh Game Studio. Toyama, who is best known as the director of Silent Hill and the Gravity Rush series, will serve as the studio's creative director alongside lead Gravity Rush designer, Okura, and Sato, who was the lead designer of The Last Guardian. The three will lead Bokeh as an independent game studio with the goal of rediscovering the joy in making games. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-ps1-games-ever&captions=true"] "First I want to fulfill our fans' expectations, but at the same time, I want to go back and enjoy how fun it is to make games," Toyama said in the studio's announcement video released on December 2. "I want to share that feeling to the players. This is what I'll aim for from now on." The announcement video features the three developers sitting at a bar talking about their shared excitement for Bokeh. Okura, who will work as the studio's game director, mentioned that until the formation of this studio, there was always a company providing them with a work environment. Now that they're independent, they'll have to prepare everything themselves, he said. "It is hard," Okura said. "There are responsibilities, but we have our freedom. That is the most important. I want to enjoy creating from now on." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/11/first-person-silent-hill-fan-remake-gameplay"] Sato, who will serve as the studio's producer, said founding a company came with many challenges but that advice from those around them helped bring this idea to life. He said the team can now just focus on making games. "I look forward to it," Sato said. "Many people we've worked with in the past are joining us too.

The Lord of the Rings community is coming together to fundraise enough money to purchase the home where J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. According to the project's website, the goal is to turn the North Oxford house into "not a dry museum, but a homely house of continuing creativity" and will have "an engaging online presence to bring into the house's programme those who cannot travel to Oxford." Middle-earth actors Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, and John Rhys-Davies, as well as songwriter Annie Lennox, took part in filming a video detailing the fundraiser.

BioWare: Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah Depart Company

3 years 5 months ago
EA has announced that Casey Hudson, the general manager of BioWare, and Mark Darrah, the executive producer on the upcoming Dragon Age, will be departing the company. All currently ongoing projects, including Anthem Next, the next Dragon Age, and the Mass Effect: The Legendary Edition remasters among them, will continue as planned despite the leadership shifts. Samantha Ryan will continue to oversee the studio, while Christian Dailey, who joined BioWare from Blizzard, will now be leading the Dragon Age project as executive producer, with Matthew Goldman remaining as creative director on the project. And the Mass Effect collection will continue to be led by Mike Gamble as that team also remains "hard at work on the future of that franchise." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/dragon-age-4-behind-the-scenes-teaser"] This marks Hudson's second departure from Bioware, after he first left the studio in 2014 and announced a new position at Microsoft in 2015. Hudson rejoined BioWare in 2017 when then-GM Aaryn Flynn stepped down. While the company searches for a new GM, Gary McKay, the senior director of development operations, will act as interim Studio GM. "They will always be an important part of the studio’s history, we appreciate their many contributions, and we look forward to seeing what they’ll each do next," Laura Miele, Chief Studios Officer.

If you own an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 version of Madden NFL 21, you can upgrade to the next-gen versions right now with a new update. This update arrives just a day before next-gen versions are available for purchase, which means those that opted in for the current-gen versions will be able to play the Xbox Series X and Series S and PlayStation 5 versions early. There are some caveats though, namely that the PS5 version of the game can only be played offline at the moment. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="legacyId=20108153&captions=true"] "The PlayStation 5 version of the game is not yet connected to the servers as we're doing final testing on a problem for which we've submitted a solution," a post on the EA Madden forums from EA reads.

Fortnite: How to Find Razor Crest and The Mandalorian

3 years 5 months ago
Fortnite fans, rejoice. Chapter 2, Season 5 has been ushered in by the fall of Galactus. With his demise came some new goodies – bounties, boss battles, a dope Mandalorian skin, and several changes to the map. Your basic running and gunning will afford you a few new opportunities. But most of the best content is locked behind Season 5’s Battle Pass. Even then, there are extra goodies just waiting to be found. One of which is a piece of the Mandalorian’s Beskar armor. To help you find this first piece (and possibly battle Mando) we’ve compiled some viable information below.

How to Get Your First Beskar Armor Piece?

Purchasing the Season 5 Battle Pass will unlock the Mandalorian skin. But like the Disney + show, fans will need to complete quests if they hope to obtain a full Beskar’Kandar – a type of armor comprised of Beskar pieces. The first piece of Beskar armor (to be placed on the right shoulder) can be found by completing the Razor quest. Fortnite gives you a hint by letting on that Mando’s ship, the Razor Crest, crash-landed somewhere on the battle royale map. It’s up to you to find it or you can check out the map we include below with the location marked.

Fortnite Razor Crest Location

The Mandalorian's ship can be found in a sand-covered area north of Lazy Lake. It’s right below a new area labeled as “???”. The best way to find it is to pull up the map while on the battle bus and mark its location; you don’t have to be exact considering the ship’s size. Once you dive out of the bus, head towards the marker. You’ll start to see the Razor Crest come into view as you get closer to that section of the map.
