SEGA and Amplitude Studios have revealed that Humankind, their upcoming turn-based historical strategy game, will be released on April 22, 2021 on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Google Stadia. This news and a trailer were revealed at The Game Awards 2020 alongside a sneak peak at next week's Lucy OpenDev gameplay scenario. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=humankind-the-game-awards-2020-screenshots&captions=true"] From December 15-28, players who have pre-purchased Humankind on Steam will be able to play the Lucy OpenDev demo, which includes 40 cultures, land and sea battles, and diplomacy with up up to 7 AI opponents. The Lucy OpenDev will allow players to play through 4 full gameplay era or 150 turns, whichever comes first. Each era, one of 10 cultures can be chosen to play as, and each have their own unique gameplay attributes. Humankind will have players playing as a created avatar as opposed a famous world leader at launch, and the team has created special customized avatars for "some of our favorite Twitch streamers." Among Us Reveals New Map, The Airship

3 years 5 months ago
Among Us has fully revealed its new airship-themed map called...The Airship. Revealed at The Game Awards 2020, the map received a new trailer, which showed off not just the new location, but new activities for crewmates to try and complete without being horribly murdered. The new map is a massive new map with multiple floors, contraptions, jobs, and more. Oh also Geoff Keighley's face will be a mask for Among Us. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/among-us-toppat-airship-map-reveal-trailer"] The map is based on the Toppat Clan Airship, from developer Innersloth's Henry Stickmin series. It caps off an incredible year for Among Us, which launched in 2018 but achieved huge success during the 2020 pandemic, even causing Innersloth to cancel a sequel in favour of adding updates like this. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has streamed the game to huge audiences on several occasions, which we've said bodes well for video games and government. It Takes Two Could Take 15 Hours to Complete

3 years 5 months ago
It Takes Two should take 14 or 15 hours to complete, and its creator, Josef Fares, thinks it should win a world record for the number of mechanics included in a game. The co-op only platform adventure from Hazelight got a new trailer and release date at The Game Awards and, in an interview with IGN, Fares went into more detail about how the game balances its magic-tinged story of mending a relationship, and its large number of settings and activities. Fares and Hazelight's last game, A Way Out was notable for changing how players interacted with the game throughout the story, and It Takes Two builds on that idea: "I think it's going to go to the world record with a huge amount of variation we have in the mechanics. And there are reasons to it as well." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/it-takes-two-gameplay-reveal-trailer"] "We really need to look closer on how the mechanics are connected to the story," Fares continues, "and I really, truly believe that in [other] narrative games, sometimes designers and writers are [making] two different games. We need to drop the idea of the old thing where you learn your mechanic and blah, blah, blah, you get better. That's old design rules. I don't care about them. They could function and work in another game but, in story experiences, you have to have the [game] and the narrative meld together. This is what we're trying to do.

A Way Out Creator's It Takes Two Gets March Release Date

3 years 5 months ago
It Takes Two - the new game from Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and A Way Out creator Josef Fares - will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC on March 26, 2021. Announced at The Game Awards, the co-op only platformer will follow A Way Out's lead by offering a Friend's Pass system – only one player needs to own the game, and can invite a friend to play online for free. Friend's Passes will work within console families, but seemingly won't be cross-platform. The game can also be played in local co-op mode. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/it-takes-two-gameplay-reveal-trailer"] A gameplay trailer showed off the new Hazelight game, which will be published as an EA Original. While clearly taking cues from the narrative-led, splitscreen action of A Way Out, It Takes Two is a far more bizarre proposition, with married couple Cody and May turned into dolls, and told to fix their relationship to break the spell. Oh, and there's a talking book of love called Dr. Hakim. The gameplay shows off a variety of worlds, including fantasy, underwater, ice, cosmic, clockwork and even what seems to be the real world at miniature size. Within them, we see a huge variety of activities, from controlling retro video games, to controlling a pirate ship, bobsledding and what seem to be classic 3D platformer boss battles. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=it-takes-two-game-awards-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] It Takes Two was announced at EA Play Live earlier this year, with Fares saying that it would "blow your f**king mind away".

PS5 Exclusive Returnal Gets March Release Date

3 years 5 months ago
Returnal, the PS5 exclusive from Resogun and Nex Machina developer Housemarque, is set for a release date of March 19, 2021. The announcement was revealed during The Game Awards on Thursday. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/returnal-gameplay-reveal-trailer"] As Returnal explains, the game lets you go deep into an Astra space scout named Selene, who is trapped in a constant resurrection. Housemarque says the game will offer fast loading times, along with haptic feedback. They also said players will be able to, "feel the natural ambience of this alien planet as the controller mimics its environmental effects." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=returnal-game-awards-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] Sony previously announced Returnal during June's first PS5 showcase earlier this year. Housemarque made a name for itself among PlayStation fans for its shoot 'em up hits, like Resogun, which debuted at the launch of the PS4, Alienation, and Nex Machina. In 2017, however, the developer announced plans to shift away from the genre due to poor Matterfall and Nex Machina sales.

Ark 2 Announced With Vin Diesel

3 years 5 months ago
Okay. It's Vin Diesel in Ark 2 as revealed at The Game Awards. Seriously. Ark 2 is a sequel to Ark: Survival Evolved, an action-adventure survival game where players must survive a hostile, prehistoric world filled with sci-fi technology. The cinematic trailer for Ark 2 begins with a band of prehistoric travelers who are attacked by a giant dinosaur and then a hostile group of raiders. And Vin Diesel is in it, did I mention that? [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/ark-2-cinematic-trailer"] In an absolutely gonzo turn, actor Vin Diesel of Fast and Furious fame is in Ark 2. It's unclear if he will be the sole protagonist of Ark 2 or a character that players can interact with. Ark will also be getting an animated series with a voice cast that includes Karl Urban, David Tennant, Michelle Yeoh, and Elliot Page. IGN gave Ark: Survival Evolved a 7.7, praising its compelling survival gameplay but with a nice narrative frame. Season Announced for PS5, PC

3 years 5 months ago
Season, a gorgeous new adventure game for PS5 and PC, was announced at The Game Awards. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/season-announcement-trailer"] Developer Scavengers Studio (Darwin Project) describes Season as a "third-person atmospheric adventure bicycle road trip game." You play as a young woman exploring the world for the first time, after previously living in a secluded village. Players will record "the last moments of different cultures before they’re washed away" by a cataclysmic event. "You are not there to stop the change but to bear witness to it, to make recordings and attempt to understand what is being lost before it’s gone," creative director Kevin Sullivan wrote on the PlayStation Blog. Sullivan likened the overall mission to "making a time capsule, deciding what would capture the spirit of the time period and carry it onwards." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=season-game-awards-trailer-announcement&captions=true"] Most memorable about Season's debut trailer was its art direction, which Sullivan describes as a "minimalist approach to realism." The style is inspired by "early Japanese woodblock print artists, as well as mid-20th century poster artists" and was guided by the principle of "getting rid of rather than adding details." Scavengers Is a Battle Royale to Keep an Eye on in 2021

3 years 5 months ago
Scavengers is a team-based multiplayer battle royale hybrid that has quite a few unique and interesting mechanics that work really well together. The third-person survival shooter felt reminiscent of H1Z1 back in its prime battle royale days with a tiny hint of Borderlands’ art style. I only got to play a few matches but I’m already excited to go back and play more.

Scavengers has a fun backstory that really sets the atmosphere. In this world, humans left Earth for Sanctuary when an asteroid shattered the moon and froze Earth, spreading a virus that created mutants. Some humans chose to stay on Earth to take control of the planet, but the ones who left to seek refuge now work for Sanctuary’s AI protector, Mother, who wants us to go back to the surface. In return trips to earth we gather data to help create a cure for the virus. But in doing so, Mother pits teams of humans against each other to collect the most materials to help the future of humanity as a sort of sick competition. If you kill others or get killed in the wilderness, however, Mother can clone you to respawn back. So the actual fighters, or scavengers if you will, are all copies of the strongest explorers. Which is actually a fun way to explain how there are so many of the same Explorer characters out on the battlefield at once.

We got our best look at Crimson Desert tonight during The Game Awards. Pearl Abyss lifted the curtain on its upcoming action-adventure game scheduled to be released in 2021 for both consoles and PC. In a five-minute trailer, Pearl Abyss formally unveiled Crimson Desert, an open world action-adventure game that combines “elements of narrative driven single-player games with online multiplayer functionality.” Check out the trailer from The Game Awards below. Dragon Age 4 Teaser Trailer Hints at Returning Characters, Epic Scale

3 years 5 months ago
BioWare debuted a new trailer for the still-untitled Dragon Age 4 at The Game Awards, confirming the return of a few memorable characters, and offering fans a look at the next adventure in the RPG franchise. While not depicting actual gameplay, the trailer does give players a sense of the art style and look the team is working toward, as seen in the new trailer below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/dragon-age-4-cinematic-trailer"] The trailer ends with the return of Solas, who was of course hinted at in the original Dragon Age Game Awards trailer in 2018. But the voiceover this time is done by returning actor Brian Bloom, taking on the role of Varric yet again. The trailer ends with the Dragon Age logo but does not confirm a full, new title for the game just yet, and there is no mention of a release window, either. What we do know, however, is that longtime Dragon Age dev Matthew Goldman remains as creative director on the project, with Christian Dailey stepping into the executive producer role after Mark Darrah announced he was departing BioWare alongside Casey Hudson. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=dragon-age-4-game-awards-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] EA debuted the first Dragon Age 4 teaser at The Game Awards 2018, and most recently offered a behind-the-scenes look during Gamescom 2020. Nintendo Switch Is The Top-Selling Console in November

3 years 5 months ago
Nintendo's hot streak continues with its massively popular Nintendo Switch consoles. The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite combined for 1.35 million units sold in the month of November, making it the top-selling console of the month, according to a press release from Nintendo. While this is impressive in itself, it's also worth noting that two brand new consoles released during the same timeframe—the hotly anticipated PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. As of this time we do not have details on their sales. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-top-25-switch-games-fall-2020-update&captions=true"] Nintendo Switch has still been notoriously difficult to find going into its fourth year, largely due in part to the global pandemic this year and everyone looking for something to stay entertained while indoors. Not to mention the popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons that launched earlier this year just as everyone was advised to shelter-in-place. “We continue to see unprecedented demand for Nintendo Switch, and we are pleased that people of all ages and gaming skill levels will be experiencing Nintendo Switch this holiday and beyond,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America's senior VP of sales and marketing. Nintendo Switch saw a big surge in November due to a new Fortnite bundle that was released stateside for the first time, as well as an updated version of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle it has sold the past couple of years. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/24/the-best-nintendo-switch-games-fall-2020-update"] Another massive milestone was achieved last month, too, as Nintendo Switch is now the best-selling console in the U.S.

3 years 5 months ago
Mysterious Xbox super-studio The Initiative has revealed its first game: a brand new Perfect Dark. Revealed at The Game Awards 2020, The Initiative described it as a first-person shooter with an "eco sci-fi" theme. No gameplay was shown, but a cinematic trailer was revealed to set the stage of its world and conflict, and an official blogpost said it's "aiming to deliver a secret agent thriller set in a near-future world." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/perfect-dark-cinematic-trailer"] In an extended introductory video, Game Director Dan Neuburger described it as a reinvention of the franchise, saying "there really isn't a game out there that's hitting that sort of blockbuster secret agent vision." The trailer indicates that original protagonist Joanna Dark will be returning as the main character here. No date or release window was announced. A new Perfect Dark has been rumored for some time, with Xbox previously downplaying the creation of a Perfect Dark Twitter account that looked to have been created by a Microsoft email address.

Telltale Confirms No Reveals at Game Awards, So Don't Expect The Wolf Among Us 2

3 years 5 months ago

Bad news for fans of The Wolf Among Us. Telltale Games has confirmed it will not be showing any new look at the sequel to its cult hit adaptation of the Fable series at 2020’s Game Awards.

Telltale posted a message on Twitter to let fans know the company plans on taking more time on the series, saying they are developing the entire season at once.

“We know you’re excited to hear more about TWUA2 [sic],” Telltale wrote. “And we look forward to telling you more when the time is right. What we can say is that we are developing the entire season at once and there is more to do before we’re ready to share what’s next for the Fabletown gang. It’s just not time yet.

Telltale also reiterated that the rights to some of the properties they previously developed games for have reverted back to their original owners, and “their fate is not currently in our hands.”

“For now, think of us as fans -- just like you!” Telltale’s statement continued. “We are a team dedicated to the Telltale legacy for narrative games, here to celebrate the classics with an eye on what’s to come. And trust us, when the time is right, we’re going to have a LOT to talk about.”

Nintendo has announced that the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter will be revealed at The Game Awards 2020. In a tweet from the company's European Twitter account, a message simply stated that "A new #SmashBrosUltimate fighter will be revealed at #TheGameAwards tonight." It was accompanied by an envelope with a Smash Bros. seal and a gold backdrop that does little to hint at who the fighter could be.

3 years 5 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has issued an apology and notification that the game’s streaming mode - designed to prevent DMCA strikes - still contains a copyrighted music track. In a tweet from the Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account, the developer said “We just noticed there's a song in the game which might put a DMCA strike on your channel even when playing with “Disable Copyrighted Music” option on.” The track plays during the first two Braindance sequences of the game, which occur early on during the story’s first string of quests.

Cyberpunk 2077 Smashes Steam's Record for Concurrent Players in a Single Player Game

3 years 5 months ago
Cyberpunk has set a new record for the highest number of concurrent players in a single player game, dominating the previous high by more than double. As tracked by Steam Database, Cyberpunk 2077 saw a record high of 1,003,262 players within hours of it launching at midnight GMT on December 10. The previous peak players for a single player video game on Steam was held by Fallout 4, which back at its launch in 2015 achieved 472,962 players. As you can see, Cyberpunk 2077 has more than doubled that record. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/09/cyberpunk-2077-the-first-20-minutes-of-corporate-path-gameplay-4k-60fps-ultra-rtx"] It’s worth noting that this will not account for every PC player; Cyberpunk 2077 is also available across GOG and Epic Games Store, too, and so the true concurrent peak for PC is likely to be higher. Factoring in consoles and Stadia, too, and there were certainly a lot of people playing Cyberpunk within hours of its release. If you’re starting out on your Cyberpunk 2077 journey, don’t forget that we’ve got all the help you could need; check out our Night City map to plan your missions and visit our Cyberpunk 2077 walkthrough if you need a guide for the quests. Cyberpunk 2077 on Base PS4 and Xbox One Units Has Major Issues

3 years 5 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 has sold extremely well already, but those playing the game on their original PS4s and Xbox Ones have been reporting major issues with resolution, frame rate, texture pop-in, and more. Many users across Twitch and social media are documenting the game's performance on their older machines, and the results are very often not pretty. Perhaps the most notable comparison is the meme below (taken from a stream by GamekultLive, at around the 1:01:00 mark): Cyberpunk 2077 is currently a last-gen game on console (although does benefit from new-gen hardware improvements), and has been advertised as such, but was never shown running pre-release on original PS4 and Xbox One units. While it's not unexpected that Cyberpunk would make graphical compromises in order to run on older console models, the level to which fidelity drops has surprised and disappointed many.
