Why Solo-Player Support Is an Important Part of the Modern GTA Online Experience

3 years 5 months ago

Seven years and 135 million copies later, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V simply refuses to slow down. The secret to its success? It’s no mystery at this point. Despite starting life back on the PS3 and Xbox 360, GTAV’s single-player experience is still largely unsurpassed in the open world space – and its juggernaut multiplayer component, GTA Online, has never stopped growing.

This week GTA Online expands yet again with the addition of a huge salvo of new content in what Rockstar has stated is GTA Online’s biggest update ever. The Cayo Perico Heist adds new vehicles, new missions, 240 new songs, and even a brand-new island to Rockstar’s monstrous multiplayer experience – an experience that, when it arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X│S, will have spanned three separate console generations.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/09/gta-online-the-cayo-perico-heist-trailer"]

But what about players who have been craving more solo GTA content, like the much-loved expansions to 2008’s GTAIV: The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony?

Well, the good news is that Rockstar has actually been spending the last few years weaving more and more opportunities for solo player fun into GTA Online, and that’s reached somewhat of a crescendo in The Cayo Perico Heist – the first GTA Online heist players can do entirely alone, if they choose.

Fortnite’s New LTM Is Basically Among Us

3 years 5 months ago
Epic Games has added a new limited-time mode to Fortnite and it's basically Among Us. This LTM is called The Spy Within and features 10 players working together to determine who the two spies are in the match. Sound familiar? These two spies must try to eliminate other players without revealing their identities and they must do so before the other eight players, the Agents, determine who is a spy. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/fortnite-ps5-trailer"] That's not where the Among Us similarities - itself a variation on the party game Werewolf - end. As you can probably guess by this point, the Agents are tasked with completing various objectives on the map to earn gold coins to win. None of the players can speak to each other during the game unless a meeting is called, at which point voice chat can be used to discuss who may or may not be a spy. During a meeting, players can vote someone out and that person will be eliminated. This LTM was made by several community creators including DolphinDom, KKSlider, Bunni_, Wert, Blanky, jstKamui, MackJack, Ritual, and Snownymous. Every few days, a new Spy Within game showcasing the work of these creators will be featured in the LTM playlist, according to Epic. To encourage players to take part in the LTM, Epic has created a Spy Within Challenge Pack that features a skate deck variant, glider, and more.

Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Promised Refunds It Couldn't Actually Guarantee

3 years 5 months ago
In the wake of performance woes for Cyberpunk 2077 on older generation consoles like the base PS4 and Xbox One, CD Projekt Red promised players that they are eligible for a refund if they’re not satisfied with the performance of the game. The only problem is actually getting the refund. On December 13, the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account posted a message for fans apologizing for the performance issues players are experiencing on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles, and that more patches are coming that will improve the stability and performance of Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles. The statement ends with a pledge that anyone who purchased a digital copy of Cyberpunk 2077 can refund the game if they want for a limited time through PSN, Xbox, or local retailers. “Should this not be possible, please contact us at helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com and we will do our best to help you,” reads the statement.

The Messy Messaging Behind Cyberpunk 2077's Messy Launch

3 years 5 months ago

You’d be forgiven for forgetting but, in eons past (well, June), as Cyberpunk received its second delay, CD Projekt led an explanatory letter to fans with the words:

“‘Ready when it’s done’ is not just a phrase we say because it sounds right, it's something we live by even when we know we'll take the heat for it."
Yesterday, in an emergency board meeting amid an increasingly disastrous launch, we got a statement that belied that approach, and even referenced it directly:
“After 3 delays, we as the Management Board were too focused on releasing the game. We underestimated the scale and complexity of the issues, we ignored the signals about the need for additional time to refine the game on the base last-gen consoles. It was the wrong approach and against our business philosophy.”
In the plainest possible terms, Cyberpunk 2077 was not ready, because it was not done – and, according to CD Projekt itself, likely won’t be truly done until February.

Viral Video of 6 Year-Old Being Banned from COD: Warzone Was Faked for a Competition

3 years 5 months ago
A new report has learned that a viral video of a 6 year-old child being banned from Call of Duty: Warzone was faked by the boy’s parents in an attempt to progress in a competition held by FaZe Clan. The extensive PC Gamer investigation reveals that a video clip from RowdyRogan, the young COD streamer with 95,000 followers on Twitch, in which Rogan is seen to have his Warzone account banned, was scripted by his parents. This was all part of an attempt to create a viral video of Rogan, one of the tasks set as part of FaZe Clan’s FaZe5 competition.

GTA's Cayo Perico Heist: Seven Years of Evolution

3 years 5 months ago
When GTA Online first launched shortly after Grand Theft Auto 5, it was an unstable, bug-riddled mess. Players lost progress, even entire characters, and that’s if you could actually log onto its oversubscribed servers. Seven years later and those launch woes are a distant memory. It still draws in hundreds of thousands of players and, despite its development stretching over two console generations - three if you count its imminent release on PS5 and Xbox Series X next year - it attempts to stay fresh with regular updates. The Cayo Perico Heist is the latest of these additions and according to Rockstar it’s GTA Online’s biggest, most ambitious heist to date. It’s also the first GTA content to be set outside of the US for over 20 years, and adds a first, much-requested new single-player experience since GTA 5 launched. Set on a paradise island owned by cartel drug lord El Rubio, Cayo Perico is built on the foundations of the heists that came before it and is the culmination of years of evolution. Heists were first added to GTA Online in 2015 and brought a taste of GTA 5’s much-loved multi-part missions to Los Santos’ ever expanding multiplayer mode. Since then, the addition of the Doomsday Heist in 2017 and the Diamond Casino Heist last year have iterated on the formula; Doomsday introduced free-mode prep missions, meaning the equipment runs made prior to the finale could be disrupted by other players in the world. The Diamond Casino Heist added more freedom still, by allowing teams to choose one of three ways to tackle the robbery - stealth, all guns blazing, and somewhere between the two. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/15/gta-online-cayo-perico-heist-gameplay"] However, Rockstar had bigger ambitions for heists, as Design Director Scott Butchard explains: “Casino was a great Heist, but we were still limited by the sort of choice, the approaches that we did.

Vin Diesel Is Now an Ark 2 Developer

3 years 5 months ago
Vin Diesel has joined developer Studio Wildcard as an Executive Producer on Ark 2, the game he also stars in. As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter, Diesel will act as the "President of Creative Convergence" at Studio Wildcard as well as playing the character Santiago, described as a "freedom fighter" who will appear in Ark 2 and Ark: The Animated Series, which was announced alongside the sequel during this year's Game Awards ceremony. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/ark-2-cinematic-trailer"] Diesel said in a statement that he is "excited to join the Studio Wildcard team to develop the story both in-game and in the new animated series." Studio Wildcard CEO Doug Kennedy also added that Diesel "has played 1000's of hours of Ark: Survival Evolved" and "understands the game intimately," which explains last week's surprise trailer appearance. It's worth noting that this is not Diesel's first foray into game development. The Hollywood actor founded Tigon Studios in 2002, which contributed to the development of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Wheelman, and Fast & Furious Crossroads. For more on Ark 2, check out our article covering the game's announcement, which digs into everything you need to know from the prehistoric cinematic trailer. CD Projekt Says It Didn't Feel Unusual Pressure to Release Cyberpunk 2077

3 years 5 months ago
CD Projekt has said that it didn't feel any unusual "external or internal pressure" to launch Cyberpunk 2077 on December 10, and explained that the decision not to delay the game was, at least in part, because it "definitely did not spend enough time looking" at compromised last-gen versions. The company also explains that, "in theory" it could have released the game on PC only. In an unscheduled investor call, senior members of CD Projekt were asked whether the company felt they had to release the game before 2021. SVP of business development, Michał Nowakowski replied: "I wouldn’t say that we felt any external or internal pressure to launch on the date – other than the normal pressure, which is typical for any release." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/15/cyberpunk-2077-for-xbox-one-and-playstation-4-review"] With major issues present in the base PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, not to mention persistent bugs in upgraded last-gen, next-gen, and PC versions, many have questioned why CD Projekt Red didn't delay the game further after three previous delays (the first two of which, in particular, were celebrated by many fans for showing a dedication to creating a polished product). In fact Nowakowski seems to imply that the company simply didn't realise how broken some versions of the game were: "It is more about us looking – as was previously stated – at the PC and next-gen performance rather than current-gen. We definitely did not spend enough time looking at that." As part of the same line of questioning, the board was asked how the game passed certification on Xbox and PlayStation, which appears to come down to trust from the console companies.

Fortnite Now Has a Performance Mode on PC

3 years 5 months ago
Epic Games has added a new Performance Mode to Fortnite on PC, which reduces the game’s visual quality and memory usage to provide significant performance gains, particularly on lower spec hardware. A prompt will be displayed for users of older hardware to encourage using performance mode. While those with very modern PCs will have no need for the mode, and those with modest rigs can simply scale settings down, this option will allow those with the very minimum specs for Fortnite to run the game at a much more competitive framerate. This will potentially open up the ability to play Fortnite to many more people. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/03/fortnite-chapter-2-season-5-zero-point-update-guide"] Epic provided two benchmarks as an example of the gains provided by performance mode. Using an i5-8265U laptop processor with integrated graphics and 8GB RAM, performance mode boosted frame rates from 24fps to 61fps at 720p. On an AMD A10-5745M-powered machine (another laptop CPU) with the mobile HD 8610G graphics chip and 6GB of RAM, performance increased from 18fps to 45fps at 720p. These are impressive improvements from such low-end hardware. In addition, players can now opt out of high-resolution textures, should you wish to improve performance or even just save hard drive space. This is done from the Epic Games Launcher, via the options menu on the Fortnite section in your game library. High-res textures take up 14.48GB of space, so it’s quite a saving if you’re in a pinch or don’t need them. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=master-chief-in-fortnite&captions=true"] Available from December 15, the mode will be available in the Advanced Graphics section of the video settings menu. It can be found under Rendering Mode, which now offers a choice between DirectX 11, DirectX12, and Performance.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Patch Fixes Many Quest Bugs, Improves Performance

3 years 5 months ago
Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Title Update 1.1.0 will arrive tomorrow, December 15, and includes fixes for a lot of quest bugs and improves performance of the game on all platforms. As revealed on Ubisoft.com, Title Update 1.1.0 will fix over 30 Quest, World Event, and Side Activity issues, many that would prevent players from proceeding due to glitches and problems. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/16/is-assassins-creed-valhalla-the-best-in-the-franchise-the-review-crew-ep-1"] Many of the issues being fixed are related to characters not appearing in the right places, allies not helping Eivor opening doors at certain points, bosses getting stuck underground or not progressing to their next phase, certain weapons not being able to perform heavy attacks, and so much more. In addition, Title Update 1.1.0 tweaks NPC power level behavior, addresses some specific actions that would cause freezes, fixed graphics and clipping issues, and, perhaps most importantly, will make sure NPCs will cut wheat instead of the air when farming. In addition to bug fixes, this new update will bring support for both the Settlement expansion and the Yule Festival. Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Review

3 years 5 months ago

While I had just as much fun playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PC as Tom did playing for his review, on the base PlayStation 4 or Xbox One it is a different game entirely. It fails to hit even the lowest bar of technical quality one should expect even when playing on lower-end hardware. It performs so poorly that it makes combat, driving, and what is otherwise a master craft of storytelling legitimately difficult to look at. It is not an exaggeration to say that I’ve felt nauseated after playing because of the terrible frame rate. It really is that bad, and it’s very suspicious that CD Projekt Red refused to provide console review copies ahead of launch.

How to Request a Refund for Cyberpunk 2077

3 years 5 months ago
It would seem there's a reason early review copies of Cyberpunk 2077 were only made available on PC. Turns out, even after the day-one patch, the game doesn't run so well on standard PS4 and Xbox One consoles. And while the developer says patches big and small are in the works, you might want to get your money back in the meantime. Whether you're regretting your Cyberpunk 2077 purchase or you want to return a different game, you may be wondering how to get a refund for digital PS4 or Xbox One games. We have you covered below. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/cyberpunk-2077-the-funniest-glitches-and-bugs-weve-seen-so-far"]

Request a Refund for a Digital PlayStation Game (Good Luck)

To request a refund for a digital purchase from the PlayStation Store, visit Sony's refund request page. There, you can connect to the Refund Chatbot, a digital assistant that will let you know if you're eligible for a refund on the purchase in question. Note that it may not be possible to get a refund if you've downloaded the game, so don't get your hopes up on this working for a buggy Cyberpunk 2077. Many people have reported being denied refunds because of this, including our own Mark Medina, who posted his chat transcript on Twitter.

Gears 5: Hivebusters DLC Review

3 years 5 months ago

Even some of my favorite games of the past generation can occasionally fall victim to the trap of adding unnecessary elements to pad out runtime, but Gears 5: Hivebusters does the opposite. This DLC expansion trims the fat and provides a laser-focused, linear experience, leaving me wanting more instead of overstaying its welcome. Although the characters (and their relationships to each other) can feel uneven, great new environments and a cool new avian creature add a new flavor to the Gears universe.

It’s billed as an origin story, but Hivebusters opens with its team of crack troops, who infiltrate Swarm hives and destroy them from the inside, already assembled. The three playable characters you and up to two co-op teammates inhabit are Scorpio Squad, made up of Keegan, Lahni, and Mac; it’s the same crew that was first introduced in Gears 5’s excellent Escape multiplayer mode. Actors Dave Fennoy, Sumalee Montano, Trevor Devall, and a good (and sometimes surprising) supporting cast turn in great voice performances.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond Launches with Major Issues, Developer Promises Updates

3 years 5 months ago
Respawn Entertainment's first virtual reality title, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond surprise-launched during The Game Awards last week, but has since been met with player complaints and negative reviews on Steam. The developer is now working on a series of patches to address the major problems. Players have reported gameplay and performance issues with the game, including egregious loading times and glitches relating to picking up weapons and reloading them. Some expected features are also missing, like detailed graphics settings and varied locomotion options. In particular, the Steam version of the game appears to perform worse than the Oculus version, as reported by Reddit users, and an IGN staff member who is testing the game. A post on the Oculus subreddit details a few of the fixes coming to the game as part of Patch 1. These include the addition of a smooth turning locomotion option and the removal of a victory screen that appears between levels. Each mission in Above and Beyond is split up into a series of vignettes - each one ends with a fade to black and a triumphant victory screen. This is going to be cut and replaced with a victory screen at the end of each mission instead. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/medal-of-honor-above-and-beyond-review"] Also, instead of earning the gallery content (documentaries with real World War 2 veterans) via the story mode, all gallery content will be unlocked from the start of the game when Patch 1 lands. The note doesn't address the game's enormous 180GB file size and high system requirements, which have been another point of contention for players. "We're trying to balance the scope of each patch vs our ability to release fixes and improvements quickly," the Reddit statement reads.

Google Services Go Down: Gmail, YouTube, Pokemon Go and More Offline [Update: Seemingly Fixed]

3 years 5 months ago
Update: Google services appear to be coming back online. Currently, IGN's able to access Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, and Pokemon Go. Google reports that all services are back online. Google has not yet commented on what caused the issue. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Google appears to be suffering a major outage right now, with YouTube, Gmail, Stadia, Google Play and more all offline. Connected services, such as Pokemon Go also appear to be down. Google search appears to remain unaffected at time of writing. All Google services IGN has tested are currently returning non-specific 500 errors. IGN sister site DownDetector is showing spikes in outage reports across YouTube, Gmail, Google Drive, Stadia, and more. Those reports come both from the US and UK, indicating that this is seemingly a global problem. The issue may be connected to Google accounts in particular, as YouTube will work when no user is signed in. It can still be accessed by using an incognito window. Google-connected services also seem to be suffering. Pokemon Go appears to be a casualty of the outage, with a spike in reports. Attempting to log into the game currently returns an error - although this may be tied solely to account issues. Multiple users - including IGN staff - are also reporting that Discord is also failing to connect. EA to Acquire Codemasters for $1.2 Billion

3 years 5 months ago
Update 12/14: An agreement has been struck that will see Electronic Arts acquire Codemasters for an approximate cost of $1.2 billion. The acquisition is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2021. At a price of $7.98 per share, EA outbid competitor Take-Two Interactive, which had previously submitted a near-billion dollar offer. "We feel this union would provide an exciting and prosperous future for Codemasters, allowing our teams to create, launch and service bigger and better games to an extremely passionate audience," said Gerhard Florin, Chairman of Codemasters, in a statement. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Original story: Electronic Arts is allegedly attempting to outbid Take-Two Interactive's nearly $1 billion offer to acquire Codemasters, the developers behind the Dirt, F1, and Project Cars racing franchises. As reported by Sky News, EA has "tabled a potentially knockout bid for Codemasters, trumping an offer agreed last month with Take-Two Interactive Software, maker of the Red Dead franchise." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/19/dirt-5-review"] Take-Two's attempt to acquire Codemasters was announced in November, and EA is said to be looking to outbid the £725 million (~$969 Million USD) offer that was placed. While EA's offer has not been revealed, Sky News notes that it is working with bankers at UBS on its offer and that it will likely to be disclosed to the stock market on Monday, December 14, and will be a "substantial premium to Codemasters' closing share price on Friday of 534p." Take-Two's offer is a cash-and-shares deal, which means that the value of the proposal fluctuates depending on the stock market.

PSA: Resident Evil Village Spoilers Have Seemingly Leaked

3 years 5 months ago
It appears that major story details have leaked for Resident Evil Village, with posts on gaming message boards, image hosts, and other social platforms spreading the news. The leak follows a recent ransomware attack on developer Capcom, although it’s currently unclear if the release of these details is directly linked to the attack. What does appear clear is that someone has acquired a development build of the game, and posted a variety of screenshots and story details. These details include the game’s ending, as well as plot threads for returning characters. The screenshots additionally reveal a variety of previously unknown enemy types. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/resident-evil-8-village-gameplay-trailer"] IGN will not be publishing any of these details, but we want to give you all a heads up to be careful what sites and threads you open, especially when searching for Resident Evil Village or browsing Resi communities. At this stage it’s unclear how legitimate these leaks are - the internet sure does love a hoax - but from a limited look at the assets, there is a reasonably good chance that this is indeed a genuine leak. It’s certainly something to take efforts to avoid should you wish to experience Resident Evil Village with no knowledge of the story or its surprises. For non-spoiler news, learn about how exploration will be a major focus in Resident Evil Village, and see the latest gameplay reveal from… tennis star Naomi Osaka. CD Projekt Red has apologised for not showing the base PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077 before launch, promised more patches, and offered refunds to those unsatisfied. In a statement on Twitter signed by senior members of the studio, the developer addressed player concerns about major issues when Cyberpunk is run on original PS4 and Xbox One consoles. "First of all," reads the statement, "we would like to start by apologizing to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase.
