Epic Games Bought an Abandoned Mall to Turn Into Its Next HQ

3 years 4 months ago
Epic Games has bought an entire mall with plans to turn the unused location into its new headquarters in Cary, North Carolina. In a press release, Epic Games announced that it has purchased a 980,000 square-foot and 87-acre Cary Towne Center mall which will become the new Epic Games campus by 2024. This includes plans to create both office buildings and recreational spaces for long-term use. Development on the new HQ will begin later this year and in the meantime, Epic Games will remain at its current Crossroad Boulevard location in Cary, the city Epic Games has been based for over 20 years. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/02/fortnite-season-5-the-mandalorian-skin-gameplay"] “We’re extremely proud that Epic has chosen to call Cary home for their new global headquarters, and we greatly appreciate the company’s recognition of Cary’s existing assets as well as the unlimited potential of the area for their growing business,” Cary mayor Harold Weinbrecht said in a statement. Epic maintains over 50 offices worldwide, running local and global aspects of its business. But the HQ in Cary will serve as the company’s base of operations. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/04/fortnite-kratos-skin-reveal-trailer"] Unused malls have actually become a popular target for companies looking to create new office space and headquarters. Companies like Google and WeWork have converted abandoned malls across the country for office use. So if you happen to live in Cary and wondered what happened to that old town mall, Epic owns it. Check out IGN’s Fortnite guide for the latest tips and walkthroughs on the latest season. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt T.M. Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Several Persona Soundtracks Are Coming to Spotify Soon

3 years 4 months ago
A bunch of Persona soundtracks is coming to Spotify, including music from the mainline games such as Persona 5 and Persona 4, as well as spinoffs like Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. The news that the Persona soundtracks are on their way to Spotify comes courtesy of the Twitter account @AniPlaylist, which notifies followers when anime songs come to the music streaming platform. The albums won’t go live until midnight on January 5, but Spotify has already created an official playlist with music from various Persona soundtracks. The tracks are unavailable currently, but will likely go live at the same time the soundtracks do on Spotify. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-modern-ign-1010-and-where-to-play-them&captions=true"] According to AniPlaylist, the Persona albums coming to Spotify include Persona 5, Persona 4 and Golden, Persona 3 and FES, Persona 2 Sound Collections; as well as P4 Dancing All Night, P4 Arena Ultimax, and several remixes and live albums as well. The Persona soundtracks are widely beloved and are often cited as highlights in any given Persona game. A popular meme even jokes that Persona single-handedly created new jazz fans.

Cyberpunk 2077 Fans Think They've Found a Hidden Reference to The Witcher's Ciri

3 years 4 months ago
Cyberpunk 2077 players have been searching for The Witcher's Ciri in the game from day one, and some think they've now spotted a fairly sneaky reference to the character in one of the game's endings. Mild spoilers for one Cyberpunk 2077 ending follow - proceed at your own risk! [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=cyberpunk-2077-portraits-photo-mode-gallery&captions=true"] As pointed out on Nintendo Smash, the endgame quest All Along the Watchtower (check out our Cyberpunk 2077 guide for how to reach it) begins with V waking up on top of the Badlands Dam, and seeing a bird perch on the open car window. That bird looks and sounds like a barn swallow - in the world of the Witcher, 'Swallow' is the Elvish-English translation of 'Zireael', from which Ciri's name derives (and is the name of the silver sword given to her by Geralt in The Witcher 3). That might seem to be a coincidence, but Cyberpunk 2077 makes very clear that there are no birds in or around Night City. A shard (the game's name for text logs) titled "Avian Extermination Act" makes clear why:
"In the face of increasingly frequent and deadly zoonotic disease outbreaks, the City Council has decided that the most effective method for reducing the risk of infection among residents is via the extermination of all avian life within 18 miles of city limits."
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/cyberpunk-2077-panam-romance-guide"] That makes the appearance of a living bird in the game particularly notable, and one with such close association to Ciri feels like a deliberate choice to some fans.

Phil Spencer: Xbox Is Working As Hard As It Can To Meet Demand For Series X/S

3 years 4 months ago
In an interview with Major Nelson, Phil Spencer has said that Xbox is "working as hard as we can" to get more Xbox Series X and S consoles to players, as shortages continue. Recapping the year, Spencer said, "we got the consoles launched and we wished we had more of them, we're selling out too quickly". He continued, "I get some people [saying], 'Why didn't you build more, why didn't you start earlier, why didn't you ship them earlier?' I mean all of those things, and it is really just down to physics and engineering,". "We're not holding them back, we're building them as fast as we can, we have all of the assembly lines going", Spencer added. Spencer notes that he's been on the phone recently with AMD's Lisa Su (who manufacture the CPU and GPU of Xbox's next-gen consoles) asking "how do we get more?". It's clear that the team is working hard to get more consoles into the hands of players.

Cyberpunk 2077 Gets a Third-Person PC Mod

3 years 4 months ago
PC players can now enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 in third-person, thanks to a savvy modder. As reported by PC Gamer, a third-person perspective mod for Cyberpunk 2077 was uploaded to Nexus Mods over the weekend. The JB - TPP MOD WIP Third Person mod is very much a work in progress - in our own brief test, the player model looks... odd in motion, with legs and arms moving unnaturally to account for the intended first-person view. You can probably expect some more general bugs, too. NieR: Automata's 'Final Secret' Has Been Found After Almost Four Years

3 years 4 months ago
NieR: Automata's "final secret" has been discovered after nearly four years, and it allows you to skip the entire game. As reported by Kotaku, modder and dataminer Lance McDonald discovered this cheat code that allows players to go straight to the end of NieR: Automata after only defeating the first boss. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/03/06/nier-automata-review"] NieR: Automata, which was released in 2017, has multiple endings that require players to replay the game numerous times to truly complete the story. While the game may already have its fair share of cheats and secrets, this newly found cheat code is on a whole different level, as it allows you to simply go right to the last ending. Spoilers ahead for NieR: Automata. Once you have unlocked Ending E, players must make it through a challenging arcade shooter that has you attempting to destroy the game's credits. Once finished, you are given the option to sacrifice you save data to assist others in that task. If accepted, you will actually lose your save file. This cheat code, however, lets you get to that ending to help others without completing the game and having to give up your hard earned save data. McDonald discovered that this is not a glitch, but an actual cheat code that is programmed into NieR: Automata.

100 Billion Hours Were Spent Watching Gaming Content on YouTube in 2020

3 years 4 months ago
Over 100 billion hours were spent watching gaming content on YouTube this year, with Minecraft leading as the most-watched game. YouTube Culture and Trends has released an annual gaming report, and the company revealed that viewers watched over 100 billion hours of gaming content on the site, which is the equivalent of traveling to Neptune and back 475,000 times. This makes 2020 YouTube Gaming's biggest year yet. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/15/2020-game-of-the-year-igns-nominees"] "YouTube Gaming has its biggest year, ever, in 2020 with 100B watch time hours and 40M+ active gaming channels," YouTube Head of Global Gaming, Ryan Watt, said. Of those 100 billion hours, Minecraft was the single most-watched game, with over 201 billion views. That's more than the double the amount of views the second most-watched game of 2020 received, which was Roblox at 75 billion views. Garena Free Fire, Grand Theft Auto V, and Fortnite came in third, fourth, and fifth place at 72, 70, and 67 billion respectively. YouTube also revealed the top ten creators in terms of gaming views for the year: FGTeeV, Jelly, Flamingo, Robin Hood Gamer, ItsFunnneh, LazarBeam, Slogo, Mikecrack, Arab Games Network, and Vegetta777. Over 80,000 content creators hit 100,000 subscribers, more than 1000 creators reached 5 million subscribers, and over 350 creators crossed the 10 million subscriber mark, according to YouTube. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=best-video-game-story-of-2020&captions=true"] "We've also seen gaming creators give back in incredible ways this year," Watt said. "The gaming community has always been willing to lend a helping hand when needed.

Podcast Beyond Plays Bloodborne... Finally

3 years 4 months ago
BEYOND! On this week's episode of Podcast Beyond!... well, the cast took the holiday off, but as an end-of-year treat, we'd like to present the first (and currently only filmed) episode of our long-awaited Bloodborne let's play series. Watch the episode above or check it out on YouTube. Host Jonathon Dornbush had never attempted to really beat a Soulsborne before recording this, and his cohosts Brian Altano, Lucy O'Brien, and Max Scoville wouldn't stop talking about Bloodborne. So, the trio helps Jonathon begin his adventure into Yharnam in the first episode of our Bloodborne let's play. This was recorded way back in March before shelter-in-place protocols had been established and before we began working remotely. While we're working to continue the show in 2021, we wanted to put out the initial episode to thank all the Beyond! fans for your patience, and so you can enjoy watching as Jonathon either plays terribly or maybe does OK in his first journey into the beloved Soulsborne. Podcast Beyond! will be back next week with our regular episodes, but we hope you enjoy this in the meantime! Someone Added Realtime Ray Tracing to SNES Games

3 years 4 months ago
Ray tracing is one of the biggest advancements in gaming technology and is utilized by high-end PCs, the PlayStation 5, and both the Xbox Series X and S. Oh, and also some Super Nintendo games thanks to one incredible modder. Ray tracing is a rendering technique the simulates the way light bounces off objects, which can create much more realistic shadows, reflections, and lighting effects, and game developer and software engineer Ben Carter of Shironeko Labs took on the challenge on making it work on the SNES with his SuperRT chip.

PlayStation Plus Games for January 2021 Announced

3 years 4 months ago
Sony has announced that the PlayStation Plus games for January 2021 are the PS5 version of Maneater and the PS4 versions of both Shadow of the Tomb Raider and GreedFall. Revealed on PlayStation.Blog, all of these games will be available from Tuesday, January 5 through Monday, February 1, and its important to note that the PS4 version of Maneater is not available in this round of games and Maneater is not available in Saudi Arabia. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/22/maneater-review"] Furthermore, GreedFall is not available in the Middle East (replaced with Assetto Corsa), Japan, or South Korea (replaced with Mistover). In our review of Maneater, we said "It’s absolutely fun to play as mutant Jaws on steroids! Maneater chews the metaphorical scenery as often as it has you devouring humans and the diverse aquatic inhabitants of the Gulf of Mexico, and that’s some good dumb entertainment – for a while." In our review of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we said "With a story that manages to satisfactorily tread the line between high-concept fun and grounded character exploration, Shadow of the Tomb Raider meaningfully wraps up the journey Lara began in 2013 and convincingly leaves her in a place resembling where she was when we were first introduced to her more than 20 years ago." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/10/shadow-of-the-tomb-raider-review"] In our review of GreedFall, we said "I enjoyed myself just about every step of the way through GreedFall’s epic, morally complex tale of exploration and swashbuckling.
