Activision Denies CoD Warzone Use In 100 Thieves BLM Charity Tournament

3 years 10 months ago

100 Thieves, the gaming organization known for running teams in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Fortnite esports competitions, has announced that its upcoming Black Lives Matter charity tournament has been delayed. The four-week competition, Gamers for Equality, will no longer start on June 18 because publisher Activision has allegedly denied the organization access to use Call of Duty: Warzone.

In a tweet by 100 Thieves, the organization said it hopes to "still host [the Gamers for Equality] tournament and are working to find alternative solutions." The competition--which was scheduled to happen on June 18, June 25, July 2, and July 9--was a Warzone tournament raising money to support organizations fighting racial injustice, with 100 Thieves donating $100,000 over the four-week period. A new start date for Gamers for Equality has yet to be announced.

Pokemon Developer's Other RPG Is Coming To Steam

3 years 10 months ago

The studio Game Freak is best-known for their work on the famed Pokemon franchise, but they recently came out with another RPG, titled Little Town Hero. Formerly a Nintendo Switch exclusive, that game is now coming to PC via Steam on June 30.

Both the new PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of the game are getting a retail release, dubbed the Big Idea Edition. It's unclear if this edition's new Easy Mode will come to this PC version as of yet.

Described as a turn-based RPG with a card-based combat system, Little Town Hero first came to the Nintendo Switch in October 2019. In GameSpot's Little Town Hero review, critic Suriel Vazquez gave the game a 5/10, praising its music--which was composed by Undertale creator Toby Fox--but faulting almost everything else about the game. "Little Town Hero finds some success in avoiding some of the complex systems and tedious menus that can bog down other card games and RPGs, but it ends up suffering for it," he wrote.

Fortnite Season 3 Adds Cars, But They Aren't Available To Drive Yet

3 years 10 months ago

Season 3 of Fortnite: Chapter 2 is officially live. This season introduces a ton of changes and new features to Epic's hit battle royale shooter, including an Aquaman skin and a new kind of vehicle: cars. However, despite what you may think after watching the Season 3 trailer, the cars aren't actually live yet. If you want to try out the latest wrinkle in the battle royale game, you're going to have to wait a bit longer.

Although the vehicles are featured prominently in the aforementioned video, you currently cannot find any cars around Fortnite's map. That's just as well; tying into Season 3's aquatic theme, much of the island has been flooded, so you wouldn't have much of a chance to make use of the cars anyway, but it appears they'll become available as the map changes during the season.

According to Epic's official website, the flood water will gradually recede as Season 3 progresses, opening up new areas and features. Beneath a screenshot of the new car, Epic writes, "As the water recedes, even more locations will be uncovered. And as roadways become more open, you'll discover new ways to get around..."

This led some to question whether or not the new PlayStation can sit on its side. Thanks to an image from Amazon, however, we now know that both versions of the PS5--the skew with a disk drive and the one without--can lay horizontally without any issue.

Pokemon Sword And Shield DLC Lets Your Fave Follow You Around

3 years 10 months ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield has gotten its first expansion, the Isle of Armor. The new content opens up a whole new area with new rivals, more Pokemon to catch, and more. And as fans have dug in, they've also found a neat little feature that calls back to some of the earliest days of the series.

According to Pokemon fansite Serebii, once you reach a certain point in the Isle of Armor, the first Pokemon in your party will follow you around. GameSpot hasn't verified with our own monsters, but Twitter has already started populating with people showing off their favorite pokemon walking around the overworld.

The feature is usually referred to by fans as "walking Pokemon," and it first appeared in Pokemon Yellow as Pikachu followed you around. This is as opposed to normal, when all of your Pokemon are stored in their PokeBalls. Walking Pokemon have appeared in a few different games, but weren't in Sword and Shield until now. That means this is your first chance to see the new Galar creatures acting as your personal escort.

Fortnite: Where To Use A Whirlpool At The Fortilla (Aquaman Challenge)

3 years 10 months ago

Fortnite: Chapter 2, Season 3 is officially live, which means a huge slate of changes for the game, as well as a new set of challenges to complete. Much like Deadpool last season, Aquaman is the big licensed tie-in character for this season, complete with a skin to unlock and challenges to complete. The first of these is available on launch day, and it's luckily pretty easy to complete: Use a whirlpool at The Fortilla. Here's what you need to do.

Where Is The Fortilla?

The Fortilla is the new base in the southwest corner of the map; it can be seen prominently in the opening cutscene for Season 3. Of course, when you first jump in to the game this season, none of the named locations will be listed for you, so we've included a map with The Fortilla's location below. It's located west of Rickety Rig and south of Holly Hedges.

Pokemon Sword And Shield: How To Get The Newly Added Pokemon Without Buying DLC

3 years 10 months ago

The first expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield, The Isle of Armor, is out now. The DLC arrives alongside a new update, which introduces an assortment of new and returning Pokemon to the Galar region. These monsters can only be caught in the new Isle of Armor area, but you don't need to own the expansion to add them to your collection.

You can obtain the newly added Pokemon in a couple of different ways, even if you haven't purchased the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass. If you're looking to get your hands on the monsters, we've broken down all the ways you can get the newly added Pokemon without owning the Isle of Armor DLC below.

Transfer From Pokemon Home

If you've caught any of the newly reintroduced Pokemon in previous games, you can transfer them into Sword or Shield via Pokemon Home. Newly added Gen 1 Pokemon such as Scyther and Kangaskhan can be brought over from Let's Go, Pikachu or Let's Go, Eevee if you have a copy of either title, but any monsters from later generations will need to be transferred from Pokemon Bank on the 3DS. That, however, can be a tricky process, so be sure to check out our guide on how to transfer Pokemon from Bank and other games.

Pokemon Sword And Shield DLC: How To Access The Isle Of Armor

3 years 10 months ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield's first expansion, The Isle of Armor, has arrived. The DLC introduces an entirely new area to games, the eponymous Isle of Armor, which is home to an assortment of new and returning Pokemon, and features a new cast of characters to meet and storyline to follow.

Although the Isle of Armor provides plenty of new things to do to after conquering the Pokemon League, you don't need to finish the main storyline to access it; you can venture to the island at any point in the game after you first reach the Wild Area Station, and the level of the foes and Pokemon you meet there will scale based on how many badges you've earned. Here's how to travel to the Isle of Armor.

How To Access Isle Of Armor

Since the island lies off the coast of Galar proper, it's inaccessible from the mainland, so you'll need to take a Flying Taxi from Wedgehurst Station to get there. After installing the expansion, you'll automatically receive the Armor Pass; show that to the attendant inside Wedgehurst Station and you'll be shuttled to the island at no charge.

New Pokemon Snap Is Coming To Nintendo Switch

3 years 10 months ago

During a special Pokemon Presents video presentation, The Pokemon Company has revealed a brand-new Pokemon game for Nintendo Switch: New Pokemon Snap. The spin-off, which is based on the cult classic Nintendo 64 game, involves taking photos of Pokemon in various locales.

New Pokemon Snap takes you to islands with a variety of locales, including jungles and beaches, where you can "research various Pokemon in their natural habitats." The photos you take in the game will build up a Photodex, which is undoubtedly similar to the Pokedex from the main series Pokemon games. The company also says you'll be able to discover "new, never-before-seen Pokemon expressions and behaviors" by doing so.

The original Pokemon Snap was released in 1999 and was well-received by critics and fans. We recently counted it among our favorite Pokemon spin-offs, and it's one that fans have been hoping to see make some kind of comeback on Switch for some time now. The new game is being developed by Bandai Namco Studios, which has also partnered with Nintendo on other exclusive series such as Super Smash Bros. Thus far, there is no release date.

Fortnite Season 3--Jason Momoa's Aquaman Joins The Battle Pass

3 years 10 months ago

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3 has arrived, and it's called Splash Down. While we're still piecing together what has changed and what's stayed the same, one major takeaway from the first trailer is that a member of the DC Universe has joined the fray as part of the new Battle Pass, and will be made available soon.

In the screenshot from the trailer below, you can distinctly see Jason Momoa's Aquaman makes an appearance. He's wearing the same costume that he did in James Wan's 2018 movie, and we can also see the distinctive scar over Momoa's left eyebrow.

For comparison, here's Momoa as he appears in the film. He's looking a bit more chilled out in the game.

Splatoon 2 Update 5.2.1--The Latest Patch Has Fixed Some Multiplayer Problems

3 years 10 months ago

Splatoon 2 players aren't used to receiving new updates, and aside from the bonus one-off Splatfest back in May, the game's online offering is pretty set. On June 15, though, the game received its third patch of 2020, and players might be wondering what has changed.

Turns out, it's not a whole lot--but if you've been hit with issues and glitches, they might have been addressed. Splatoon 2 Update 5.2.1 introduces two bug fixes, according to the patch notes. Here's what it does:

Changes to Multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue where if the player had Dualie-type weapons equipped, they could travel farther in the air than intended when dodge-rolling, as the result of a certain combination of movements.
  • Fixed an issue where the player could land in a different location than intended if they activated a Booyah Bomb and then quickly ended the effect.

And that's it. It's good to know that the Splatoon development team is still paying attention, even if the game is no longer receiving massive updates with new maps or weapons.

Madden NFL 21's Cover Is Very Different This Year, And There Is A Good Reason Why

3 years 10 months ago

Madden NFL 21's cover is striking and unique. In fact, it's perhaps the biggest departure from the norm in the history of the franchise. As it turns out, there is a good reason for that.

Under normal circumstances, EA Sports would conduct an in-person photo shoot with the year's cover athlete--this year's it's Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. A physical photo shoot wasn't possible this year due to COVID-19. So EA Sports contacted the Baltimore Ravens and asked if they could use some of team photographer Shawn Hubbard's photos. Hubbard said on the Ravens website that it was a "huge honor" to work with EA on this, even if he doesn't have much familiarity with the game series.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is celebrating a sales milestone--it's sold 3 million units since launching in 2018, with its accompanying DLC clocking in at 1.5 million units sold.

Warhorse Studios, the Czech team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, announced a new logo this week on Twitter alongside the these sales figures. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the medieval action-RPG had also previously sold around two million units in its first year.

It was met with controversy upon release and suffered from a variety of bugs that may have marred first impressions of the game. A conversation was also sparked around representation in video games and whether titles keen to be billed as "historically accurate" could feature inclusivity. However, Kingdom Come: Deliverance appeared to pick up steam when the From The Ashes DLC launched in late 2018.

New Zealand Video Game Industry Sales Drop For The First Time Since 2012

3 years 10 months ago

New Zealand's video game industry had a difficult 2019, but one local trade group believes the future is bright for the region thanks in part to the upcoming launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA) released its report for New Zealand's game industry on Wednesday, showing that the total industry value in 2019 reached $501.4 million. This was down by 9 percent compared to last year, and it marks the first year-over-year decline since 2012. Note that this number covers total sales, not just for video games developed in New Zealand. For comparison, the IGEA also represents Australia, where 2019 industry sales reached $3.6 billion.

No Caption Provided

There is a good reason for the downturn, however. 2018's results in New Zealand--as well as Australia, the US, and other parts of the world--were very positively impacted by the huge success of Fortnite. That game is now moderating in results, and as such, 2019 was always going to have a tough time comparing.

Fortnite Season 3: The Device Event Opens Up Wild Fan Theories

3 years 10 months ago

Fortnite: Battle Royale's special in-game event, The Device, has finally happened. Midas activated his special weapon causing a storm that destroyed The Agency and submerged most of the map under a giant wall of water. That's all we know until Season 3 kicks off on June 17.

Those moments in Fortnite's latest live event were great, but they aren't as important as what happened in between them. As the map was getting decimated by the huge wall of water, players were given quick glimpses of an office somewhere else in the game. These short bits gave us more info about the world of Fortnite than any previous event.

No Caption Provided

Players got to walk around the office, which appears to belong to Fortnite's trademark blonde guy Jonesy, with the camera in first person (if you looked down you could see whichever skin you have equipped). The walls were decorated with pictures of Jonesy and what appear to be other characters from Fortnite: Save the World's cast, although it's not exactly clear who they are. Files labeled "top secret" with images of Midas and other characters were laying on the desk.

Developers Are Pulling Games From Steam Due To Silence Over Black Lives Matter

3 years 10 months ago

Following the murder of George Floyd in the US, many companies--including game publishers and storefronts--have expressed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement, and have delayed events such as the PlayStation 5 reveal, EA Play, and the start of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 4.

There's been a notable exception, though--Valve, the owner of the Steam storefront, has not said a thing. Although a "Black Voices in Gaming" list was visible on Steam during the Guerrilla Collective streams, which were also postponed, Valve is yet to comment officially in any capacity.

In the wake of Valve's silence, gamesindustry.biz is reporting that several indie developers have pulled their games from the storefront. Julian Glander, the developer of Art Sqool, says that his game is no longer available on the storefront, and that he is unlikely to every publish on Steam again. In the tweet below, he posts his full reasoning.

Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart's New Female Lombax Will Be Playable In The PS5 Game

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is coming to PlayStation 5, and its reveal at the PS5 streaming event raised a few questions. One thing we came away curious about was the new female Lombax character who pops up at the end--who is she, and how much of a part will she play in the final game?

The World's First Prescription Video Game Has Been Approved

3 years 10 months ago

While EndeavorRX, a game by therapy-focused studio Akili Interactive may not be groundbreaking for its graphics or its gameplay, it just broke new ground by becoming the first video game that can legally be marketed and prescribed as medication in the USA.

EndeavorRX--with RX being the medical notation for prescription--is a game for iPhone and iPad that can now legally be prescribed by doctors. Designed for children between the ages of eight and 12 who have inattentive or combined-type ADHD, the game went through six years of clinical trials before finally receiving FDA approval.

The most favorable study showed that one in three of the children studied in clinical trials "no longer had a measurable attention deficit on at least one measure of objective attention," after they played Endeavor for 25 minutes a day, five days a week for four weeks straight.

Operation: Tango Will Let You And A Friend Save The World Together Next Year

3 years 10 months ago

Operation: Tango has been announced, and a gameplay trailer has been released to show how it works. It's a two-player asymmetrical game in which one player is an agent and the other is a hacker, and the two must work together to progress.

The trailer, below, shows how the agent will be out getting their hands dirty, dodging turrets and sneaking through levels. The hacker needs to assist them, unlocking doors, taking control of cameras, and making sure that things go smoothly.

It looks like the two styles of gameplay on offer here will be very different from one another, and that both players will need to communicate to succeed. On the game's Steam page, it says that you won't be able to play without a microphone.

Nintendo Surprise Launches Free Switch Game About Jump Rope

3 years 10 months ago

Nintendo has released a new, free game on the Switch Eshop without any prior warning. It's called Jump Rope Challenge, and you play it by using two Joy-Con controllers, which you hold as though they were the handles of a jump rope (or "skipping rope" for those of us in Australia).

Two players can play together, each using just one Joy-Con, and the game is aiming to be as simple as possible, challenging you to jump 100 times a day. There are no tutorials and the menus are very simple, so don't expect a fitness regime on par with Ring Fit Challenge--but it's also totally free.

The game was developed internally at Nintendo Japan by a small team of developers working from home. It's designed to give players a quick, easy form of exercise without needing to leave the house.

Tony Hawk Says New Pro Skater Remasters Will "Turn The Tide" After Some Disappointing Releases

3 years 10 months ago

Tony Hawk himself has spoken about the origins of the upcoming Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remasters and why he thinks the new games will help "turn the tide" of public opinion after the most recent games in the series were poorly received.

Speaking to IGN, Hawk said it was Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was pitched the idea of the remasters. "We've been having talks over the years of the potential of it, and finally, I literally sat down with Bobby Kotick. We were actually talking about other things in regards to my charity, and he just casually threw out, 'Why don't we remake THPS?'" Hawk recalled. "And I said, 'You don't understand how many people ask me that.' And he said, 'Well, you know, we've had success with a couple of other remasters, so why don't we think about it.'"

In 2017, Activision Blizzard management said more Activision game remasters would likely happen after the gigantic success of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. After that game, Activision released the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-fueled remaster packages. Additionally, Activision recently launched Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. On the Blizzard side, the company released a remastered version of Warcraft III, but it was a disappointment.
