Pokemon Go Fest 2020 Event Detailed: New Mythical Pokemon, Rotating Habitats, And More

3 years 11 months ago

Pokemon Go Fest is returning on July 25 and 26, but this year's event will be very different from previous ones. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Niantic is making some big changes to the annual live event to turn it into a global experience, and the developer has now shared more details on what exactly that will entail.

Unlike previous Pokemon Go Fests, this year's event will be open to players around the world. Tickets are on sale now in Pokemon Go's in-game shop for $15 USD, and they grant holders access to both days of the event.

In place of the trainer lounges typically found at Pokemon Go events, Niantic will host a "virtual lounge" website where you'll be able to interact with other players from your team, as well as participate in giveaways, keep track of live updates, watch interviews with Pokemon Go developers, and more. Niantic says you won't be restricted to interacting with players on your own team, although the studio says there will be some "fun team-specific things" to do in your team's lounge.

Former Xbox Exec Says "No Way" PS5 Will Be More Than $500

3 years 11 months ago

After a huge livestreamed event revealed the PS5's design, controllers and many of the games that will be coming to the new console, one of the biggest questions remaining unanswered is the price. With both Microsoft and Sony promising huge technological leaps on their next-gen consoles, everyone is wondering how much the next-level tech will set them back.

One of the most recent figures to weigh in is former Xbox marketing head Albert Penello, who tweeted "no way this console is over $499" with some certainty.

Having overseen marketing on the Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, Penello certainly has the chops to comment on a situation like this. He also mused a little on how price would be the deciding factor on who 'wins' this generation of the console war.

Red Sails Looks Like Journey Crossed With Wind Waker In First Trailer

3 years 11 months ago

Plenty of interesting-looking games were shown off during the PC Gaming Show, but Red Sails stands out as one of the most exciting. The game is set in a world where sand has taken over, and your character, Sil, sets out to rescue people who are trapped in the sand.

Sil is looking for their lost clan, the titular Red Sails, which will mean sailing the sea of sand. The sailing mechanics are aiming for semi-realism, and it reminds us a bit of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker--although Journey is also a clear inspiration.

The desert is made to be explored, and you'll be able to find whole villages and numerous monuments out there. It also looks like you'll be able to use the stars to guide yourself. The trailer is below.

Call Of Duty: Warzone UI Update Will Show Modes More Clearly

3 years 11 months ago

Call of Duty's battle royale spin-off Warzone is always adding new and interesting game modes to keep its players engaged, but one of the problems with its variety is fitting all those modes in the game's menu. Infinity Ward developer Joe Cecot has tweeted that a UI update is coming that will fix this issue in "the next big update," in response to a fan's complaint that the quads battle royale mode had been pushed into the playlist menu, as picked up by Charlie Intel.

With game modes often being moved around for temporary events, the menu is cluttered and hard to navigate. The upcoming update teased by Cecot will focus on visibility and making more room for the different modes.

Players also had questions about Plunder, which has temporarily been taken out of rotation to make space for new game modes like Rumble, but Cecot promised that it would be back shortly--adding that Plunder is "one of [his] favorite modes."

3 years 11 months ago

Bomber Crew is getting a sequel--Space Crew has been announced as part of the Future Games Show, and it will, as the name suggests, take the action into space. The game will sport a similar pixel art-style to its predecessor, but now you'll be working on a spaceship instead of a WWII fighter.

Xbox Live Custom Gamerpics Are Back As Moderation Strain Eases

3 years 11 months ago

In March this year, Xbox Support warned of "small adjustments" to its services in a notice on the Support website, in response to a huge increase of users on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Live, and Mixer. Due to the overwhelming demand, the decision was made to temporarily turn off users' ability to submit their own photos for gamerpics, club pics, and club backgrounds.

With all user-submitted pics requiring approval by a moderator, the service has stayed offline to avoid overburdening Xbox's moderation team. Any attempt to upload a photo during this period was met with the error message: "Sorry, we can't upload your picture right now. Try again in a little while."

Other services were also impacted by the increase in demand, including outages to the Xbox Live service.

Hitman 3 Dubai Trailer--Everything We Know About The Game's First Location

3 years 11 months ago

Hitman III has unveiled the first of the six locations the game will launch with, and it's an area with a lot of potential. The first map, Dubai, will focus on a building that appears to be the Burj Khalifa. This is the tallest building in the world, standing at 2717ft (828 metres), with 163 floors.

It's not clear whether we'll get a real reenactment of the building or a fictional building inspired by it, as the term "Burj Khalifa" does not appear as part of IO's announcement or in the trailer, but the building Agent 47 is shown scaling in this trailer is clearly meant to evoke it.

In some shots of the trailer below you can also see the Cayan Tower, which is famous for the way its architecture twists. This stands at 1005ft. Based on photographic references, we believe that the game is potentially taking some liberties with building placements for the sake of creating beautiful views.

Rock Of Ages Devs Reveal The Eternal Cylinder, A Survival Game With Several Weird Twists

3 years 11 months ago

Rock of Ages developer Ace Team has unveiled their new game, The Eternal Cylinder, as part of The Guerrilla Collective showcase. It's a open-world survival game set on an alien planet, and you'll play as a herd of creatures (called Trebhums) that need to survive not only the other creatures you'll encounter, but also a giant rolling cylinder that pops up and rolls right through the game world.

There are shades of Maxis' Spore here, as you have to grow and evolve over the course of the game to deal with the harsh procedurally-generated environments you encounter. While you'll be weak to begin with, the creatures you're controlling will gain new abilities and ways to adapt as you play, and will mutate in a way that grants them new skills. The game will feature real-time environmental destruction, so when the Cylinder rolls over a tree, for instance, it will stay broken.

The game is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store later this year, and it's designed so that if you play through more than once you'll have a different experience each time. The debut trailer is below.

New Ghostrunner Gameplay Reveals New Powers, VR Missions

3 years 11 months ago

Revealed at GamesCom 2019, Ghostrunner made a big splash with its vibrant, slick cyberpunk aesthetic and fast gameplay. Blending the style and tone of games like Cyberpunk 2077, Hotline Miami, and Mirror's Edge, it puts you in the role of a resurrected warrior known as the Ghostrunner. The protagonist must navigate a dystopian far-future city to learn more about his past and gain the strength to fight the ruler, known only as The Keymaster.

Coming from developers One More Level Games, 3D Realms, and Slipgate Ironworks, Ghostrunner is an incredibly stylish action game set in a cyberpunk dystopia. In the newly revealed gameplay trailer, we saw the reveal of gameplay set in cyberspace, along with some new foes who can use tactics to get the jump on the Ghostrunner. Before the reveal, I got the chance to dive into a new preview build of the game, which showed off the increased scope of the game.

With the means to travel between the real world and cyberspace, the protagonist also possesses some fast moves and killer attacks. He's incredibly skilled in the ways of combat, yet the trade-off is that he's also incredibly vulnerable. In a similar vein to Hotline Miami, you can die in one hit, which will send you back to previous checkpoints in each stage. To play Ghostrunner is to always stay on guard while maneuvering throughout the levels. Yet, there's a certain grace in how you're able to dodge enemy bullets, wall-run to your target, and pull of chain attacks against groups of enemies. Blending platforming and fast hack-and-slash gameplay, Ghostrunner presents each battle as a combat puzzle, where you'll need to figure out the most efficient and quick way to dispatch the enemies in the arena.

Cygni Is A Retro-Inspired Shooter With A Modern Sheen

3 years 11 months ago

Shoot-'em-up games aren't as prolific now as they were in the '90s, but developer KeelWorks' new game Cygni: All Guns Blazing looks extremely impressive. Featured in a gameplay trailer during the Future Games Show, the bullet hell game mixes Pixar-style visuals--from a former Pixar artist, no less--with fast movement and dangerous enemies.

Cygni is technically a vertical shooter, but you have freedom of movement and can quickly run circles around enemies as you blast away at their shields and avoid projectiles. The trailer featured a bug-like robot enemy that fired both lasers and projectiles at the same time, and it will take extreme coordination to avoid getting hit. For fans of older retro shooters, it looks like it will be second nature, but it will make use of a twin-stick control scheme like the similarly-futuristic Nex Machina.

Right now, Cygni is planning to release on PC and Mac. However, the game's developers are also hoping to release it on next-generation systems. You can wishlist the game now on its Steam page.

Escape From Tarkov's New Map Revealed, 12.7 Patch Will Revamp The Skill System

3 years 11 months ago

Escape From Tarkov had a ton of new content detailed during the PC Gaming Show, and players of the military sim shooter can look forward to the next map, the revamped skill system, and a new boss. These features are part of Tarkov's upcoming 12.7 patch, which was said to be more of a technical update.

The major reveal was the new map and it looks to be a highly detailed rundown city full of buildings to explore, and Battlestate's head of PR Nikita Buyanov said that this will be the "biggest and most detailed location" for Tarkov. Sound design will be very important as the trailer showcased the different audio cues of walking on different surfaces. You can see the preview of the map in the video below.

Buyanov also stated the the Customs map size will increase by 30 to 40 percent. Although 12.7 will overhaul the skill system and include the new Senator boss, we didn't get further details on those features. For more on the game, be sure to check out our Escape From Tarkov coverage.

Surgeon Simulator 2 Gets Even Sillier With Co-Op Gameplay

3 years 11 months ago

Surgeon Simulator 2 is expanding upon the comical, QWOP-like surgery from the first title by introducing both co-operative play and a puzzle-ridden hospital for you to explore.

The sequel, from developer Bossa Studios, doesn't confine you to the operating table like the first game. Instead, you now have to rummage through the entire hospital for items that might be crucial to the operation at hand. There's still the same silly surgery antics as before, centered around the complexity of having to control each of your fingers and appendages with individual button presses, but it's a gag that's seemingly got more depth to it now.

The other big addition is co-op play, with Surgeon Simulator 2 supporting up to four players. Although the game can be played solo, Bossa Studios says it was designed with co-op in mind. During surgeries, players will have to balance checking vital signs and administering medicine to keep patients alive, as you hack away at their internal organs to at least try and save their lives.

No Man Sky Dev's The Last Campfire Gets New Trailer Ahead of Summer Release

3 years 11 months ago

No Man's Sky developer Hello Games' new title, The Last Campfire, is almost here, and at the PC Gaming Show, the developer dropped another new trailer ahead of its release sometime this summer. The trailer gives a sense of the more intimate single-player adventure game, as well as the strange mysteries it hides.

You play as an ember, a blue-clad character exploring a strange, seemingly dead world. Expect The Last Campfire to be a shorter and possibly more melancholy game than Hello's previous work--the developer describes it as "a story of a lost ember trapped in a puzzling place, searching for meaning and a way home."

We previously got a look at The Last Campfire's gameplay, and you can see the newest trailer above. It looks like you'll be solving puzzles and interacting with characters to find your way, some of whom appear to be dead--but the ember might have the power to revive them, at least briefly. Other than solving puzzles as you explore The Last Campfire's vibrant world, Hello Games has kept details pretty locked up so far, so we'll likely have to wait for the game's release to learn more.

Amazon's New World Releases Releases In August, Beta Coming Next Month

3 years 11 months ago

Amazon Games' PC MMO New World is set to be one of the biggest projects ever produced by the company, and brand-new gameplay and details were revealed during the June 13 PC Gaming Show--including the release date.

It hasn't been available to the public yet, but New World enters closed beta on July 23 for anyone who pre-orders. These players will also receive special digital items, including a fist bump emote, "Isabella's amulet," a guild crest set, and a unique title.

New World will then release just a month later on August 25, and the simultaneous global launch should ensure there are plenty of players right off the bat. The game will feature enormous 100-player fortress sieges, skill-based combat, and the ability to form Companies with each other to operate out of strongholds. The game also does not include character classes, allowing you to customize your hero as you see fit without fitting into a set archetype.

Weird West, An Upcoming Game From Dishonored And Prey Co-Creators, Gets New Trailer

3 years 11 months ago

During the PC Gamer show, a new trailer for Weird West was released. The upcoming immersive simulator comes from a studio headed by the co-creators of Dishonored and Prey.

As seen in the trailer, included at the start of the PC Gamer segment that's embedded below, Weird West takes place in a Wild West-like setting but also features supernatural elements. The game will feature permadeath on its hardest difficulty.

Unlike Dishonored and Prey, Weird West plays in third-person and features multiple protagonists. You'll play as five different people in Weird West and your decisions with each character can have impacts on the story. If you manage to keep protagonists alive, you can come back and recruit them to your party when the game transitions you to the next character.

Rogue Lords Makes You The Devil, And Dracula Is Your Minion

3 years 11 months ago

If you've ever wanted to become the devil and control an army of classic storybook villains, Rogue Lords is exactly what you need. Developed by Cyanide, the rogue-like turn-based game puts you in control of the prince of darkness, and classic villains from literature--including Dracula--are available to use in combat.

Each run in Rogue Lords will end when your own health bar goes to zero. If one of your minions is damaged, you will become vulnerable, but you can use a special "souls" system to manipulate the game's own interface. By doing this, you can access little tricks, such as lowering the enemy's health bar before delivering an attack.

The turn-based combat makes use of cards, and every skill costs action points. If you're good enough, you can create combo attacks, delivering even more damage.
