Paper Mario: The Origami King Trailer Shows Off New Features, Characters

3 years 11 months ago

Paper Mario: The Origami King is surprisingly close to release for a game we just recently learned exists. That condensed time frame means Nintendo has only a little while to detail the upcoming action RPG before its release on July 17, and so a new trailer gives us a broad overview of its systems and features.

The trailer shows off some of the new characters who will join Mario on his quest, like Bobby the amnesiac Bob-omb and Professor Toad. Those companions will help Mario on his way, along with Olivia, the sister of the villainous King Olly.

It also takes an extended look at the new combat system. It's mostly recognizable from other Paper Mario games, in that you take on a line of enemies with timing-based attacks that can strike multiple foes--like bouncing across them in signature Mario style. But this one also includes a twist on that formula with enemies appearing on a set of rings. You'll be able to arrange the rings before combat starts to strategically position the enemies. Boss battles against the "Legion of Stationary" will also use the ring system, as Mario navigates around the circles to make his way closer for a stronger attack.

Ubisoft's Gods & Monsters Demo Leaks On Google Stadia

3 years 11 months ago

An old demo of the Ubisoft game Gods & Monsters was briefly available on Google Stadia, giving players who noticed a chance to try it before the company corrected the error.

Eurogamer reports that the demo appeared in the Stadia store under the code-name Orpheus. Since Stadia is a streaming platform, users were able to instantly start playing it without waiting for a download.

Those who played the game compared it to both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. It used a stamina bar like BotW and borrowed user interface and menu elements directly from Odyssey. In a statement, Ubisoft confirmed that this demo was from E3 2019, and that both the game and title have changed.

Grab This Free PC Game For A Limited Time

3 years 11 months ago

IO Interactive's next entry in the Hitman franchise was announced during the PS5 reveal event this week. Hitman 3 arrives on current and next-gen consoles as well as PC in January 2021. If the trailer piqued your curiosity in the stealth series, you now have a chance to play an older Agent 47 adventure free of charge. GOG is giving away Hitman: Absolution for free until June 15 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET.

Hitman: Absolution originally released in 2012 and refined the gameplay from previous entries by introducing the intriguing contracts system. Players could create unique objectives within missions for their friends to run through, and then compare to see who executed the objectives with the most proficiency.

It earned a 7.5/10 in GameSpot's Hitman: Absolution review. "Even if you have no interest in contracts, however, Hitman: Absolution's campaign is fulfilling on its own," critic Kevin VanOrd wrote. "There are some stumbles here and there--in the AI, in the mission design, and elsewhere. The story, too, hobbles a bit at the end, leaving some narrative gaps that needed filling in. But one thing's for sure: it's good to have Agent 47 back, and he was clearly needed. The greasy world he inhabits was in sore need of cleansing, and it's a pleasure to have so many ways of scraping the human grime off its surface and discarding it like the trash it is."

Despite Confusion, PS5's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Is A Standalone Game

3 years 11 months ago

Update: The exact nature and scope of PS5's Spider-Man: Miles Morales remains unclear, but one thing has been straightened out--it is a standalone game, as confirmed by Insomniac's James Stevenson. This is despite the suggestion from a Sony exec that it would be an "expansion" of sorts to the existing Marvel's Spider-Man game. You can read those original comments below.

Sony introduced its new PS5 titles during its latest event with what looked like a sequel to Insomniac's Spider-Man, which launched in 2018. But in statements made after the stream, Sony has clarified that it's in fact an expansion to the original title.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Review Roundup: What Are The Critics Saying?

3 years 11 months ago

The Last of Us Part II is still a week away from launching, and the general consensus from reviews is that it's going to feel like a long wait. The latest from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Part II picks up a few years after the PS3 original, following Ellie on a bloody path of revenge. It's bleak, tragic and gut-wrenching, but a tale most reviews suggest you don't miss.

Overall critic reception has been incredibly positive, with a few caveats. In GameSpot's own 8/10 spoiler-free review for The Last of Us Part II, editor Kallie Plagge commends the game's strong characters and tense combat, but feels it suffers from pacing issues and uneven analysis of its themes. "In the second half of the game, these exploration issues persist, as do the horrors of combat and violence. But for reasons I can't explain due to spoiler restrictions, the narrative shifts significantly at a certain point, and the context of everything you've done up until then changes along with it. There's a lot I want to say that I'm not allowed to until the game is out, but this half of the game is the reason anything in it works at all. It examines a lot of the violence that happens early on, though not all the violence in general, and it's where the story finds its meaning." Take note that we'll be publishing another review (with the same score) that further explores the story and other spoiler-y elements once the embargo permits us to do so.

How Long Is The Last Of Us Part 2: Game Length Explained

3 years 11 months ago

Like its predecessor, your playtime to complete The Last of Us Part 2 can vary pretty wildly. You can choose to play Naughty Dog's stealth horror game in a fairly slow, methodical way if you're careful enough to sneak past the humans and infected who stand in your way. And compared to its predecessor, The Last of Us 2 is quite a bit bigger, with the larger areas to explore and scavenge for supplies.

Though your mileage may literally vary, here's how long it takes to beat The Last of Us Part 2, no matter how you choose to survive the post-apocalypse. Be sure to also check out our full The Last of Us 2 review, which is spoiler-free.

How Long Is The Last Of Us Part 2?

  • Critical Path: 23-27 hours, depending on playstyle
  • Completionist: 30-35 hours

Several members of the GameSpot team have made it through The Last of Us Part 2 on different difficulties and utilizing a variety of playstyles. In general, we've found the game will take you around 25 hours to complete, depending on how you approach it. Stealthier players and those on higher difficulties can expect longer playtimes; those of us who've taken on the game on Hard or Survivor difficulty have seen it take between 27 and 30 hours for a run. On Moderate, you can expect it to be closer to 22-25 hours, depending on how methodical and sneaky you are.

Fallout 76 Pushes Back Some PTS Features For Update 20 And Will Let You Trade Legendary Scrips This Weekend

3 years 11 months ago

Fallout 76 players who have access to the PTS on PC have been testing Update 20, and after looking over feedback Bethesda will hold back some of the features these players have had access to. When Update 20 hits, Bethesda has announced, the A Colossal Problem event quest won't come with it--that'll be added in a later update.

A Colossal Problem, which is designed for a team of 8 and opens with players dropping a nuke on Monongah mine, needs additional testing, Bethesda says, despite receiving "mostly positive" feedback from players.

Legendary Perks are also being held back. "We’ve decided to shift this feature so that we have more time to review the current Legendary Perk system, make changes, perform testing, and ask you for additional feedback in a future iteration of the PTS," Bethesda writes. The plan is to allow players to "swap Legendary Perks in and out at any time in exchange for a few Perk Coins," and introduce a few other tweaks and changes.

Riot Games Executive Resigns After Sharing Controversial George Floyd Image

3 years 11 months ago

The Riot Games executive who was under internal investigation after sharing a controversial image of George Floyd has resigned, according to a company spokesperson. The news came on the evening of June 11, a day after Vice Games originally uncovered the news.

Riot Games emphasized the same sentiment they shared when Vice Games originally published their report, calling the image that Johnson shared "abhorrent" and that it "runs directly counter to our values and our belief that addressing systemic racism requires immediate societal change."

"We’re also striving to change the face of our industry and create opportunities, including by investing $10 million in founders underrepresented in the games industry and helping create a future pipeline of underrepresented talent for the gaming and tech world," a Riot Games spokesperson said.

More PS5 Game Reveals Are Coming, PlayStation Boss Says

3 years 11 months ago

As part of the PlayStation 5 reveal event, Sony announced or showed off more than two-dozen new games for the next-generation console. This is just the beginning of what to expect in terms of games, according to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan.

Ryan told the BBC that Sony chose to spotlight games big and small during its briefing to let people know there will be a wide variety of gameplay options on the console. But if you didn't see anything you like, Ryan stressed that more game reveals are coming.

"We wanted AAA games that would fully demonstrate the horsepower of the machine. But some of these smaller games are making very cool and innovative use of the new features of the console," he said. "So we allowed the show to give a sense of the sheer range of gameplay experience that will be available on PlayStation 5. And this is just the start. There are so many more games that we have in development."

PS5's Impressive Load Times Are Coming Into Focus With Resident Evil 8, NBA 2K21, And More

Among the advancements that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will offer is dramatically improved loading times. Back in 2019, Sony showed off the improved load times with Marvel's Spider-Man, and now the company and its partners have shared more insight on the subject.

As part of Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event, new information about load times on PS5--and Xbox Series X for that matter--came into focus.

NBA 2K21

2K Sports is promising that NBA 2K21 will feature "drastically improved load speeds" on PS5. In a video, the developer showed that the game will load in about two seconds. It's not exactly clear what's loading here, but it's an impressive showcase all the same.

Mortal Shell: New Gameplay Trailer Still Looks Like Dark Souls, But With More Bondage Gear

3 years 11 months ago

Mortal Shell, in the first trailer we saw and in follow-up analysis, looks a lot like a From Software game--specifically Dark Souls and Sekiro, depending on whether you're focusing on the aesthetic or the nuances of combat. Now a new gameplay trailer has been released, and while it still looks very similar to the works of From Software, we can see some of the elements that might differentiate it.

In the trailer below, we see how Mortal Shell features multiple "shells" that change your fight style. We also get a good look at the enemy designs, which are a mix of humans, monsters, and things in-between.

We can also see that the game is skewing in a different direction with some of these designs--note the bondage gear worn by some enemies, and the rags worn by others.

PS5 Reveal Gives Us A Strong Taste Of Next-Gen, But It's A Familiar Flavor

3 years 11 months ago

It happened, folks. Sony finally lifted the curtain on the PlayStation 5 in an online presentation this week, revealing a curvy two-toned console that looks like it came from some parallel dimension where our inevitable cyberpunk reality is more bright and optimistic than it actually is. 2020 is the year video games move into the next generation. The way we play games is going to change irrevocably. I definitely heard the phrase 'paradigm shift' dropped like a cannonball in the ocean.

The future of gaming is here, again. We are witness to it, right now.

Anyway, the whole thing opened with Grand Theft Auto V, a game from 2013 that you'll also be able to play on the new PlayStation. Cool.

The Resident Evil series debuted in 1996 with Resident Evil, though it's grown in size and scope over the years. The Resident Evil 3 (remake) is the most recent entry in the franchise, though that will soon be dethroned by Village which is projected to launch in 2021.

Call Of Duty: Mobile Season 7 Is Live Now, And The Battle Royale Map Is Much Bigger

3 years 11 months ago

Season 7 of Call of Duty: Mobile has begun with the latest update, and as promised it's brought with it a new Battle Pass and some significant changes. This season of Call of Duty: Mobile is called Radioactive Agent, and it not only adds some new maps and modes, but also significantly expands the game's Battle Royale map.

Tunisia and the Gulag have been added as new maps in this update, meaning that players can now fight in the post-death arena from Call of Duty: Warzone. Gulag is playable in the 2v2 Gunfight mode (previously known as Showdown), so you'll be dropped in with a random loadout that changes every two rounds and forced to fight in close quarters. Tunisia is a more traditional map, with a pleasant seaside setting.

A new scorestreak, Cluster Strike, has been added too--it's an air-to-ground strike that can do major damage. Zombies are also making a bit of a comeback in the new Attack of the Undead mode, which takes ten players and casts one as a member of the undead, who them has to start infecting the others. The aim is to survive until the end--but once you turn, the objective changes and you'll want to try and kill your former teammates.

Why Sony Is Releasing A PS5 Without A Disc Drive

3 years 11 months ago

Sony is releasing two PlayStation 5 consoles this year. One has a disc drive and the other doesn't. In a new interview with GameSpot sister site CNET, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan explained why Sony is releasing the disc-free console.

He explained that it's a reflection of what many consumers want these days. Basically, people are consuming more and more digital content as opposed to physical media, and Sony is releasing a new PlayStation console for those who align more with this vision for the future. "We're just acknowledging here that as time passes our community is becoming more digitally orientated," Ryan said.

No Caption Provided

The executive pointed out that, in the first quarter of 2020, a whopping 66 percent of PlayStation games sold were digital. This uptick in digital game sales was no doubt driven by the fact that people are staying home during the COVID-19 crisis, but in any case, the percentage of digital game sales at Sony--and other game companies--is growing.

No, the PS5 Presenters Weren't Renders

3 years 11 months ago

Worried that the hosts at today's PS5 reveal event looked a little uncanny valley? Sony has now confirmed that the presenters were taped at home and that they were not pre-rendered.

Following Sony's reveal of their latest console, site The Gamer erroneously reported that the hosts of the event were renders, and not real people. However, while that would have been a cool way to show off the PS5, the truth is that the hosts were actually just filmed at home. Instead of relying on some fancy digital technology to bring Jim Ryan and co. to everyone's screens this morning, it was just good, old-fashioned camerawork.

Regardless, there were plenty of opportunities during the PS5 reveal event to show off the impressive graphical prowess that Sony's next-gen console was going to have.

PS5 Still Requires PS Plus For Online Play, Apparently

3 years 11 months ago

The PlayStation 5 reveal event has been and gone, and as we scour over each piece of information and re-watch trailers, new pieces of information are coming to light. The first game shown was a next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto V, which will launch alongside a standalone iteration of GTA Online, made available for free during its first three months. PlayStation users will get various perks, and the GTA reveal also showed that PS Plus will continue into next-gen.

During Sony's presentation, a title card announcing the GTA Online free launch period also included the PlayStation Plus logo, and the phrase "PS Plus required to play." This means that the PS5 will, like the PS4 before it, embrace an annual subscription service for online play.

PS Plus will be required to jump into the PS5 version of GTA Online.

What's less clear is whether PS Plus subscribers will receive free PS5 titles at launch, as was the case with the PS4. However, it seems likely that GTA Online can be claimed by non-subscribers, and then potentially played later if they subscribe.

GTA 5 Coming To PS5 And Xbox Series X In 2021, Will Be "Expanded And Enhanced"

3 years 11 months ago

Sony debuted the PlayStation 5 today, and one of the first announcements was that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V is coming to the next-gen console in 2021. It's launching in the "second half" of 2021, Rockstar said in a post on the PlayStation blog. A post on the Rockstar Newswire confirms that Grand Theft Auto V is coming to "new generation consoles" plural, so you can expect it on Xbox Series X, too.

GTA 5 was originally released on the PlayStation 3, before coming to PlayStation 4, so PS5 will be the third platform that Rockstar's open-world action game is released on. It hasn't been confirmed yet, but it seems very unlikely that GTA V would be exclusive to PS5 on next-gen, so you should expect an announcement for Xbox Series X in due course.

Sony did not provide any details on any potential new content or features for the PS5 and Xbox Series X editions of GTA 5. However, a trailer confirmed that the game will be "expanded and enhanced" on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

PS5 Discless "Digital Edition" Announced

3 years 11 months ago

Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event showed off lots of games and our first glimpse at the console design. But it also packed an extra surprise: the PS5 will launch as two consoles--one with a disc drive and a "Digital Edition" without.

The console design largely matches the controller, with a sleek white and black finish with blue highlights. The two versions appear largely identical, other than a small curve in the disc version to accommodate the drive. The debut of the two console versions appeared alongside other hardware, including an HD camera, headset, and media remote.

Sony did not detail how the two models will be priced, or any differences in drive space. We know that the PlayStation 5 uses an SSD, and that PlayStation 5 discs will support a capacity of up to 100 GB. If games do take that much space, the drive would have to be sufficiently big to let you load a good number onto your Digital Edition PS5 at once.

New PS5 Game From The Octodad Devs Starring Talking Food Will Release This Year

3 years 11 months ago

Debuting at Sony's PlayStation 5 livestream, Bugsnax is the next game from Octodad developers Young Horses. Keeping up with the quirkiness of their last game, Bugsnax is set on an island known as Snaktooth Island, where stray fruit and bits of fast food are scattered about. In the trailer, it was revealed that the island is filled with bug-food hybrid creatures that can grow eyes and began walking upright, talking and interacting with one another. A talking walrus explains that you'll be helping each of the talking creatures. Bugsnax is set to release this year on PS5 and PC via the Epic Games Store this holiday season.

In a press release, the developers describe it as a "whimsical, narrative-driven adventure game." In the game, you'll explore the island filled with 100 different species of creatures, and you'll be able to capture and collect each one. The island also features different biomes, where unique creatures inhabit. You'll also be able to customize your favorite ones. Over the course of the game, you'll learn more about the origins of the island and the creatures that live there.

"We just love making weird stuff. It's been tough staying silent all these years, and it brings us joy and relief and dread to finally show off Bugsnax," said Young Horses creative director Kevin Zuhn in the press release for Bugsnax. "It's so much bigger and weirder than we ever could have imagined when we started. It surprises and delights us constantly and we hope it has the same effect on all of you."

There's much more to see from Bugsnax and other games shown off during the PS5 reveal livestream. Check back with GameSpot as more details come in.

PS5 Reveal Event: Arkane Studios' FPS Deathloop Looks A Lot Like Dishonored

3 years 11 months ago

We haven't heard much about Arkane Studio's Deathloop since its announcement at E3 2019, but a new trailer during Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event confirms the first-person shooter is headed to next-gen consoles. The new trailer gives a sense of the story, in which you play as an assassin locked in a timeloop so they can be hunted down and murdered over and over again. The game is due in Holiday 2020 and will be a PS5 exclusive on consoles at launch, according to the PlayStation Blog.

Deathloop is about "rival assassins locked in a timeloop," and the trailer gives a better sense of Deathloop's gameplay than we've had in the past. The game looks a lot like another Arkane franchise, Dishonored--as Colt, you're trying to stay alive on the island of Black Reef while everyone is out to kill you. To kill them first, you'll wield a number of weapons, like various firearms and blades, while also utilizing special powers that can lift enemies into the air or toss them. There's also a Blink-like teleport that looks very similar to that ability in the Dishonored games.

Every time you're killed, you restart the timeloop, and it sounds like your goal is to take down eight assassination targets before midnight, without being killed, in order to break free. Stealth also looks like a big component of gameplay, allowing you to kill enemies silently with suppressed weapons or with up-close lethal takedowns.

In addition to Resident Evil 8, Capcom announced a brand-new game called "Pragmata" during the Sony PS5 reveal event on Thursday. Coming in 2022, the sci-fi game largely remains a mystery.

But the reveal trailer, which we'll post here ASAP, showed a future soldier who was firing some kind of weapon into the air to bring back echoes of people--and cats!--or something of the like.

Goodbye Volcano High Is A Dose Of Teenage Angst For The PS5

3 years 11 months ago

During Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal event, indie developer KO_OP (creators of GNOG) announced its next project called Goodbye Volcano High. It's a narrative-focused game with a 2D-cartoon visual style that tells a coming-of-age story with anthropomorphic animals.

The brief glimpse introduced what appears to be the main cast of characters, who seem to be gathering together to burn a mysterious journal. All the while, high school drama ensues.

Goodbye Volcano High is scheduled to release sometime in 2021 for PS5. Currently, it's unclear if the game will be coming to other platforms.

Journey Out Now On Steam, Includes Free Bonus Game

3 years 11 months ago

It's been eight years since the critically acclaimed indie game Journey first released, and now players on Steam can begin their own silent journeys through the game's desert landscape. Journey is available to own on Steam starting today, June 11, and it even has a launch discount and free game included to sweeten the deal (as if getting to experience Journey for the first time wasn't enticing enough).

From now until July 9, you can buy Journey on sale for $11.24 on Steam, down from its usual $15 list price. Journey is also included in the phenomenal Annapurna Interactive Collection bundle on Steam, which gets you a truly stellar group of games like Florence, If Found, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Telling Lies for $142.33, 10% off its $158.12 list price. That's not a huge savings, but if you haven't played any of these games, do yourself a favor and add them to your library.

Anyone who buys Journey on Steam within its first two weeks on the platform will also receive a free copy of Flower, created by the same studio, Thatgamecompany. Flower normally sells for $7 on its own, so it's a pretty sweet deal to get Journey on sale and snag Flower for free while you're at it. The game was well-received, earning an 8/10 in our Flower review.
