Apple is increasing its support for third-party controllers that can be used for gaming or navigation with Apple TV. The next tvOS update coming to Apple TV will bring support for Microsoft's newer Elite Series 2 controllers as well as the Xbox Adaptive Controller.

The Apple TV allows input from Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers as of last year, with the update bringing two of Microsoft's newer controllers into the fold. Notably, the Elite Series 2 controller adds a number of additional buttons that can be mapped, compared to the standard Xbox One controller.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller is one of the most accessible controllers out there, making it a welcome addition to any gaming platform. Microsoft has even said in the past that the accessible controller should be available on any platform, including their competitors', as part of "the democratization of accessibility."

Sky: Children Of The Light Reveals The Season Of Sanctuary For July

3 years 10 months ago

After Sky: Children of the Light's Season of Enchantment ended on Sunday, Thatgamecompany has announced that the next season will be the summery-themed Season of Sanctuary. The game's sixth season since release, the event will add a brand new area as Enchantment did with the Forgotten Ark.

The new season trailer shows a "hidden island", with a similar aesthetic to the Daylight Prairie world. With a season emblem resembling a manta, the trailer also prominently features a pair of white mantas.

While pre-orders for the new season opened on Monday, a bug caused both the season pendant and the bonus candles to appear as items for the previous season. The pre-order feature has now been disabled until a fix can be applied, but TGC has promised those who already made the purchase that the items will be updated to Season of Sanctuary items.

PSVR Horror Game Do Not Open Has A Legitimately Scary Debut Trailer

3 years 10 months ago

Do Not Open, an upcoming PlayStation VR horror game from Quasar Dynamics, has been revealed in a first-look trailer. The game, which was developed as part of the PlayStationTalents initiative and is exclusive to Sony's platform, is an escape room survival horror with permadeath.

The game casts players as Michael J. Goreng, a zoologist and epidemiologist who is trapped within a warped version of his own house. Each time you play, the layout of the house will change, as will the puzzles you'll need to solve to escape the supernatural being haunting the house. There are no save points, so each time you play, it'll be a complete experience from beginning to end, whether you finish without dying or not.

The game is described by the developers as being similar to an escape room, but with a terrifying supernatural bent. Check out the trailer below, which effectively ramps up the tension over its short run-time before...well, you'll see. It's not for the faint of heart, though, so proceed with caution.

Lego Developer Spent $1 Million On A Hobbit Game Pitch, See The Early Demos Here

3 years 10 months ago

The developers of Lego games, Traveller's Tales, spent $1 million on a pitch for a Hobbit video game that never came to be. Studio co-founder Jon Burton revealed this in a new video for his YouTube page, GameHut, and he speaks very freely and openly about the project and how it came to be (and not be).

In 2008, Warner Bros. announced plans to make two Hobbit movies, with Guillermo del Toro attached to direct. Burton wanted to make an Xbox 360/PS3 video game tie-in for the movie, but not a Lego game like his studio had become known for.

Burton and his team got the greenlight to pitch to del Toro and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, and the studio worked for six months to create a demo to pitch in February 2009. Burton said it is his belief that a video game tie-in for a movie should try to replicate the movie as closely as possible so it feels like you're "living" the film. With the movie not out yet, Burton's team used Jackson's The Lord of the Rings as a template, recreating key moments from the movies.

The iPad Is Getting Keyboard And Mouse Support For Gaming

3 years 10 months ago

Even though no one is allowed to attend in person, Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference for 2020 is going ahead this week as a virtual event. One of the new announcements to come out of it is that keyboard and mouse gaming will be possible on iPad from June 25, as well as increased support for new controller types.

The news from the conference was tweeted out by games personality Wario64, along with some info from a video mainly aimed at developers, announcing that keyboard, mouse and trackpad controls will now be supported through the Game Controller framework.

Unfortunately for gamers, the update doesn't mean you'll be able to immediately plug a keyboard and mouse mouse in and start playing your favorite iPad game. You'll have to keep an eye out for news from developers on when and whether support for different control schemes will be added.

Command And Conquer Remaster Adds Private Game Lobbies In Latest Patch

3 years 10 months ago

Command and Conquer Remastered Collection has received a new patch, and it's added a few key features and a whole heap of tweaks and improvements. The big change is the added ability to host private game lobbies, which should make it easier to arrange multiplayer matches with your friends.

The Remastered Collection, which brings together the original game and its sequel Red Alert plus all their DLC, has tailored this update based on "the continued feedback from the passionate Command & Conquer," according to a press release. They've detailed everything included in the patch in a post on the Command and Conquer Reddit page.

Bugs have been squashed in this update too, and a stuttering issue has been addressed, although this may have led to slightly longer load times. The post also warns that the update might have invalidated some mods, and modders will need to update their work to make sure it is still compatible.

Hamilton On Disney Plus Will Censor Two F-Bombs

3 years 10 months ago

Lin-Manuel Miranda has shared some new insight on the upcoming Disney Plus release of Hamilton coming up on July 3, including how it's censored for the family-friendly platform.

Hamilton on Disney Plus is a recording of a Broadway performance from 2016, featuring the original cast--and the original swears--minus two. The movie version is rated PG-13, so it is only allowed to have one use of the word "f**k." The actual play has three, so two "f**k"s were censored or changed.

In the Yorktown scene, the line "I get the f**k back up again" will be muted on the swear word. The other censor will be on the "Southern mother f**king Democratic Republicans" line.

How COVID-19 Is Impacting EA's Business

EA said in May that it expects to make $5.525 billion in revenue and a profit of $978 million for the period, which is a record for Q1, but Jorgensen said that the real numbers will be even bigger than that.

The full numbers will be announced during EA's earnings report on July 30, but Jorgensen said today, "What I will tell you is it has been much stronger than we anticipated."

Borderlands 3 Bounty Of Blood DLC Adds 4 Gameplay Objects To Encourage New Combat Strategies

3 years 10 months ago

On June 25, Borderlands 3 will get its third campaign expansion, Bounty of Blood. In a GameSpot Play For All interview (which is embedded below), Gearbox creative director Matt Cox talked about four new additions that the DLC will implement into Borderlands 3's combat loop.

"We wanted to take four gameplay objects and throw them into the combat mix," Cox said. "So while we still have that core loop going on, we have different avenues of different styles of combat and ways to negotiate all the craziness in Borderlands."

Each of these four new gameplay objects are designed to encourage the player to tackle combat a little bit differently in Bounty of Blood. "So there's something called a traitor weed where if you shoot it, it releases these bugs that turn enemies to your side for eight to nine seconds," Cox said. "And a core-sploder, if you melee it, it will shotgun out high-damage shrapnel. There's also a breezer, which acts sort of like a jump-pad but it soars you into the air by a puff of air. And then there's a telezapper, which is essentially a teleporter--it lets the player travel from point A to point B instantaneously."

EA Says It Will "Double Down" On Star Wars Games Going Forward

3 years 10 months ago

With Star Wars, EA has one of the most sought-after licenses in all of entertainment--and the company plans to take full advantage of it. In a "fireside chat," EA executives spoke about how the company plans to "double down" on Star Wars after the huge success of Star Wars: Battlefront 1 and 2, Galaxy of Heroes, and Jedi Fallen Order more recently.

"Up is my hope--up and to the right," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said about where he hopes the company will take Star Wars in the future. "We have a tremendous relationship with Disney. We have a tremendous relationship with Lucas. We have a longstanding relationship with them going all the way back to Star Wars The Old Republic that we launched in 2011."

Wilson called out Star Wars: Battlefront 1 and 2 as top-performers from EA's partnership with Disney on Star Wars. Those games have combined to sell around 35 million copies, he said. Wilson added that the mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes has enjoyed "extraordinary" success, and it continues to perform well. Additionally, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order sold 10 million copies to stand out as another big success.

Borderlands 3 Bounty Of Blood DLC Won't Reintroduce An Old Character Like Previous DLCs

3 years 10 months ago

The third campaign expansion for Borderlands 3, Bounty of Blood, is scheduled to release on June 25. In a GameSpot Play For All interview, Gearbox creative director Matt Cox revealed that this new DLC would break the pattern of seeing the return of a Borderlands character. You can watch the full interview in the video embedded below.

"We do have some freedom to try some new things with certain story moments," Cox said. "And we're keeping a lot of the story close to the chest because we built something that we think is pretty special--some surprises here and there. And I just want to say this: When I say surprises, I know a lot of people think, 'Ah, returning characters are coming back, who is it?' But I just want to be very clear that the only returning characters are the Vault Hunters themselves. The planet of Gehenna and all the characters we meet are all brand-new."

Both of Borderlands 3's first two campaign DLCs saw the return of fan-favorite Borderlands characters. In Mad Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jack, you teamed up with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's Timothy and the Lovecraft-themed Love, Guns, and Tentacles reintroduced Borderlands 2's Gaige. Based on the teaser image for the fourth and final DLC expansion, it's assumed DLC 4 will see us reunite with Borderlands 2's Krieg, which would mean that Bounty of Blood will be the only campaign expansion not focused around a returning character.

Dying Light, Waylanders, Vampire Bloodlines 2 Devs Issue Statements Amid Chris Avellone Allegations

3 years 10 months ago

Chris Avellone, a game designer who came to prominence in the '90s following his work on Fallout 2, has been accused of sexual assault and harassment by multiple women, according to Gamasutra. Avellone has worked as a freelance writer after leaving developer Obsidian Entertainment in 2015, 12 years after he co-founded the studio with fellow ex-Black Isle Studio employees. Multiple studios he has recently worked with have now spoken out about his involvement with their projects.

Among the studios now addressing his work status is Paradox Interactive, which stated that none of Avellone's contributions to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 will be included in the game, although it appears this does not stem from the allegations. According to a Paradox representative, Avellone's role in Vampire Bloodlines 2 was "brief" and whatever content he made for the game would not be used in any capacity. "Chris Avellone briefly worked with the Bloodlines 2 writing team early in the development of the game," Paradox said. "Through an iterative creative process, however, none of his contributions remain in the game that Hardsuit Labs is continuing to develop." Paradox didn't specifically comment on the allegations made against Avellone.

Apex Legends' Octane And Lifeline Are Buffed In New Update Ability Rework

3 years 10 months ago

The Lost Treasure Collection Event goes live in Apex Legends on June 23. The limited-time event will implement an update as well, which includes reworks for both Lifeline and Octane. Instead of buffing and nerfing both legends' abilities, Respawn is outright changing several aspects of their abilities--similarly to how Mirage was reworked at the start of Season 5: Fortune's Favor.

One of the original eight legends, Lifeline's abilities are being reworked to make her into a more effective combat medic. Since launch, Lifeline has been a character who can transition back and forth between a healer and a fighter. These new changes allow her to do both at once.

Lifeline's original passive ability, Combat Medic, is being replaced with Combat Revive. So Lifeline will no longer be able to revive and heal more quickly; instead, she can now use her D.O.C. drone to revive allies while she continues fighting or revives someone else. That's a pretty substantial adjustment for the character--it makes Lifeline the go-to healer again, as her original passive has become somewhat obsolete in the wake of buffs to Gibraltar.

Apex Legends Lost Treasure Patch Notes Revealed; Major Character Buffs And Nerfs Listed

3 years 10 months ago

Respawn has released the full patch notes for the Apex Legends Lost Treasure Collection Event, which will add Crypto's town takeover to Kings Canyon, see the return of the Armed & Dangerous limited-time mode, and offer several new rare, epic, and legendary cosmetics to unlock. The Apex Legends event begins Tuesday, June 23.

Lost Treasures also implements several notable balancing changes, as listed in the patch notes. Of note, Revenant, Crypto, Loba, and Mirage all receive buffs, Gibraltar and Caustic are nerfed, Wraith and Wattson get both buffs and nerfs to their abilities, and Lifeline and Octane are reworked--both of their changes are similar to Mirage's transformation at the start of Season 5: Fortune's Favor.

The Lost Treasures update makes a rather interesting change to ziplines as well, applying a cooldown to re-grabbing ziplines without touching the ground. Jumping off and back on ziplines while riding them has been a popular strategy for avoiding gunfire since Apex Legends launched. This new cooldown will make it more difficult to constantly implement this strategy--which should make it far easier to snipe someone off a zipline.

WWDC 2020: Apple Announces iOS 14 With The First Visual Redesign In Years

3 years 10 months ago

For the last few years, Apple's iOS updates have mostly happened behind your home screen. The display you see as soon as you unlock your phone as remained largely unchanged, but with iOS 14, announced at WWDC, it's getting a shake up.

In a way, it's the most radical redesign of iOS in years, but also not the most innovative one in the grander scheme of the industry. Front and center in iOS 14 are widgets--larger app icons that display more information at a glance, and change up the composition of your home screen drastically.

Apple also announced new features to automatically help group similar applications and sort them into folders, which will also be surfaced in groups when an app theme is searched for. Siri, Apple's own digital assistant, is also being reworked so that it doesn't take up the entire screen when dealing with a query. This lets you do more on your display at once than ever before, including new picture-in-picture support (which was introduced on the iPad a few years ago).

Microsoft Shutting Down Mixer; Ninja And Others Free To Return To Twitch

3 years 10 months ago

Microsoft has announced that it is shutting down Mixer, its streaming competitor to the likes of Twitch. The Xbox owners will be transitioning over to Facebook Gaming instead, partnered streamers having the option to be included with the move or return to Twitch. As of July 22, Mixer sites and apps will redirect users to Facebook Gaming.

Mixer, which was known as Beam.io before Microsoft purchased it, struggled to gain the viewership of its competitors since launch. Big streamer acquisitions such as deals with Ninja and Shroud might have initially drawn viewers in, but it's lacked the mass appeal Microsoft, and Xbox specifically, need leading up to the launch of the Xbox Series X and xCloud, Xbox's on-demand streaming service.

"Ultimately, the success of Partners and streamers on Mixer is dependent on our ability to scale the service for them as quickly and broadly as possible," Xbox boss Phil Spencer explained in a post on Xbox Wire. "It became clear that the time needed to grow our own livestreaming community to scale was out of measure with the vision and experiences we want to deliver to gamers now, so we’ve decided to close the operations side of Mixer and help the community transition to a new platform. To better serve our community’s needs, we’re teaming up with Facebook to enable the Mixer community to transition to Facebook Gaming."

New Warface Update Lets You Play As The Baddies

3 years 10 months ago

The PC version of multiplayer shooter Warface has received a new update, and it adds a new PvE operation to the game. Titled Operation Blackwood, the mission marks the first time that players have controlled soldiers from the rival Blackwood corporation.

It's also the game's first non-linear co-op mission, giving players the option of which boss fight they want to try to tackle first. The rewards players receive will vary based on the order they choose, and each boss will become more powerful as their allies fall. In order to receive all the loot on offer, players will have to complete the operation a minimum of three times. The update adds a new map to the game's PvP mode, titled Blackwood Base, as well as an exclusive series of new weapons.

Risk Of Rain 2 Refines Artefacts In New Content Update This Week

3 years 10 months ago

Risk of Rain 2 recently had its 1.0 release pushed back until August, but that doesn't mean you'll have to wait longer for more content to be added. The second iteration of the game's Artefact system heads to all platforms tomorrow, June 23, along with numerous other changes.

Artefacts 2.0 doesn't fundamentally rework the artefact system already in Risk of Rain 2, but it does add more treasures for you to work towards. New artefacts are unlocked by completing challenges, and then available to equip on your next run. Developer Hopoo Games doesn't spoil what some of these might be, but does say to expect a range of treasures that are both fun and challenging to work with.

The latest update will also introduce Risk of Rain 2's fifth stage, with Sky Meadow hosting new monsters and a hidden boss for you to uncover. You will also experience new loot and item drops, as well as new unlockable skill variants for various classes.

Over 3,000 Steam Deals, Free Game Available In New PC Games Sale

3 years 10 months ago

PC game keys retailer Fanatical has offered some pretty fantastic sales as of late, and another blowout sale is back with over 3,000 deals on PC games, bundles, and DLC. Fanatical offers licensed Steam keys, and the vast majority of games featured in the latest sale must be redeemed on Steam. The timing for Fanatical's Red Hot Sale is certainly interesting, as it comes just days before the rumored launch date of Steam's annual summer sale, but Fanatical's prices tend to be just as good (and usually better) than Steam's, so it's still worth checking out the numerous discounts in this latest deals bonanza. Spend over $10 in the sale, and you'll also get a free Steam game with your purchase. Right now, the free game is Skyhill, an apocalyptic roguelike RPG set in a hotel taken over by mutants.

The sale notably includes Persona 4 Golden, which launched on Steam last week. The Steam release means the beloved JRPG is now available to a much wider audience (it was previously available only on PlayStation Vita), and you can currently grab it for a few bucks off at Fanatical. The base game is available for $17, while the Digital Deluxe edition is down to $21.24. Check out our impressions of the Persona 4 Golden PC port for more information on how the game holds up in 2020.

Ghost Of Tsushima Has Gone Gold And Is Ready For Its July Release

3 years 10 months ago

Developer Sucker Punch Productions has announced that its open-world samurai game, Ghost of Tsushima, has gone gold. This means the game is ready for production and won't miss its scheduled July 17 launch for PlayStation 4.

The studio shared the announcement on Twitter, with a collage of the many developers working on Ghost of Tsushima while stuck at home in quarantine due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The team said it's "thrilled' to make the announcement and "can't wait to get it into your hands" next month.

This news comes just a month after Sucker Punch talked more about Ghost of Tsushima. During a May State of Play livestream, the studio shared tons of details about Ghost of Tsushima, including the lethality of swords, how foxes are pettable, the two distinct playstyles, and more. We also learned that two very key points about the game: protagonist Jin Sakai is the only playable character and his horse is invincible.

Pokemon Isle Of Armor: How To Teach Pokemon To Gigantamax

3 years 10 months ago

One of the most touted new features in Pokemon Sword and Shield's first DLC expansion, The Isle of Armor, is the ability to teach a Pokemon to Gigantamax. Up until now, the only way to get a Gigantamax Pokemon has been to catch one in a Max Raid battle, but thanks to a special dish called Max Soup, you can now teach any compatible Pokemon the ability to Gigantamax.

However, Max Soup requires an ingredient called Max Mushrooms, and they can be a bit of a pain to find. To help you out, we've broken down everything you need to know about teaching a Pokemon to Gigantamax below.

The Gigantamax Factor

The Gigantamax Factor is what determines if a Pokemon is capable of Gigantamaxing. Only certain species of Pokemon have Gigantamax forms, but not every individual monster within that species is able to Gigantamax; it needs to have the Gigantamax Factor to take on its Gigantamax form when it Dynamaxes.
